•Women empowerment will end GBV – dRPC

Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani, on Friday launched the Women Economic Empowerment Policy at the ongoing Women Economic Empowerment Summit, stating that 65,848 women have so far benefitted from Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme under his administration.

Launching the policy at the event held at Umaru Musa Yar’adua Hall, Murtala Mohammed Square, Kaduna, Governor Sani disclosed that his administration has ‘ramped up the implementation of the Kaduna State Women Economic Empowerment Funds (KADSWEF).

He said his government has also recorded notable achievements in its Social Investment Programmes, adding that, “65,848 women, out of the total 70,051, benefitted from our Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme.”

According to him, KADSWEF is a unique annual support initiative that provides access to financial resources for women.

“We provided the sum of N200 million in the 2024 Budget for this Fund. So far, 10,786 women have benefitted from this Fund. Government is set to flag-off the 4.0 tranche distribution to more beneficiaries with women drawn from across women cooperative groups and associations,” he added.

The Governor said his administration has “trained over 5,000 rural/semi urban women on large scale rice shelling, using modern agricultural techniques in order to increase productivity, high input processing and profit, in addition to reducing labour cost and improving quality of products.”

He also said over 120 women and adolescent girls have been equipped with various vocational and entrepreneurship development skills.

In the area of agriculture, the Governor said the State made history by carrying out the largest free fertilizer distribution in Nigeria, and women farmers were key beneficiaries of the exercise, saying that he “approved the distribution of 500 trucks of fertilizer, out of which 240,000 bags have been distributed free to 120,000 smallholder farmers.”

He explained that his administration is investing in women because doing so is investing in not just the economy but the future of Kaduna State, adding that the government is set to intensify efforts in strategic areas towards improving the state’s economic landscape.

Speaking at the event, one of the partners in the Women Empowerment Policy, development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) noted that there is a critical link between women economic empowerment and the prevention of gender-based violence.

He, however, urged the state governments across the country to domesticate the National Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy as a key strategy.

Speaking through its Director of Partnerships and Communications, Hassan Aliyu Karofi, dRPC highlighted that empowering women economically strengthens their resilience, reduces vulnerability, and addresses root causes of violence against women.

Karofi commended Kaduna State for becoming the first to domesticate the WEE policy under Governor Uba Sani’s leadership, describing it as a significant step toward improving the lives of women and fostering safer communities. “The intersectionality between WEE policy implementation and the prevention of gender-based violence is key to protecting women and girls while improving their economic status,” he stated.

The dRPC is supporting eight states in the policy’s domestication, with 11 more states set to begin the process next month, making the initiative a nationwide movement aimed at transforming the lives of Nigerian women.

“He is a mentor to many, even those that have not met him; many people are following him and they believe in his vision. He is a man of no race, religion and tribe, but he is a man of the world. “To some, he is Jagaban, to others he is of the different chieftaincy titles that he had received. He has received so many awards.

“When he was born, he was not known, but when he started making impact and touching lives, he became known. He believes in everybody’s vision, he is a dogged fighter; he is committed and he is a success. • Man, 65, arrested for allegedly stealing petroleum products

Man, 65, arrested for allegedly stealing petroleum products

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism have arrested a 65-year-old man for stealing petroleum products belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) at Idimagboro in Sagamu.

The suspect, Salami Amodu, who claimed that he thought the stolen products were holy water, was arrested with Bruce Ekonen, Joseph Ofoeyeno, Francis Ode, Kola Ifatoye and Adeniyi Badebo.

The operatives also recovered about 100 gallons of Premium motor spirit (PMS) allegedly pilfered.

Speaking with The Nation at the police station, Amodu said: “I was on my way home when a man popularly known as Alfa stopped me. He promised to pay me N5,000 per trip if I could help him to carry 10 gallons of liquid. I thought it was water so I did not bother to ask since it was good business. It is possible that the water could be anointed since he was ready to pay as much as N5,000.

“It was while we were on our way that I started to perceive the smell of fuel. I asked him and he told me that it was fuel. I was so annoyed and I shouted at him for not telling me in the first place what was in the gallons.

“Initially, I wanted to stop the car and ask him to offload the fuel, but when I realised that we were almost close to his destination, I decided to continue.

“I am aware that vandals normally pass through that route. That was why I was very angry with him.

“In that area, people go for prayers. Clerics come to that area to buy holy water to perform miracle.

“Most of the time when I am done with the day’s job, especially if I did not make much money, I would go down to the bush area to see if there is anyone who needs a lift.

“I also ensure that I do not carry vandals because on one of those days when I used to help them, it landed me into trouble with security men.

“Although there is money to make in the illegal business, the risk is much. This was why I stopped until Alfa deceived me into carrying fuel for him. I am very sorry.”

Another suspect, Ofoeyeno, claimed that his duty was just to transport the stolen products from the bush to the buyers.

He said: “Initially, I was buying directly from the NNPC staff close to the depot. Normally, NNPC staff would overload their trucks and sell the excess to us before preceding to offload the rest for the buyer. The place was however shut down when there was a fire outbreak.

“I had no choice but to patronise these vandals. I am sorry and I wish NNPC will be allowing their truck drivers to carry excess.”

Confirming the arrest, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of the Task Force, Friday Ibadin, said: “Detectives led by Lagos Sector Commander, Onaghise Osayande, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), laid an ambush and nabbed the suspected vandals.

“It is worthy to remind Nigerians that ignorance is not an excuse. Both the seller and buyer of stolen products are liable.

“The suspects will be arraigned in court at the end of investigation.”
