  • 700 take oath at agric college

The Provost, Federal College of Agriculture (FECA) Akure, Dr Samson Odedina, has blamed the prevalence of vices in the society on socialisation.

Odedina expressed concern that the youth, particularly undegraduates, were largely partakers in social vices, including robbery, assassination, thuggery, cultism, murder, organised cybercrimes and advanced free fraud.

Speaking at the 2016/2017 matriculation of the college, Odedina noted that the agencies of socialisation such as home/family, the church, the media and schools have not lived up to their roles as character moulders for younger ones.

Odedina said aside drawing students’ attention to punishment arising from anti-social tendencies, management was determined to improve on infrastructure, teaching and learning facilities in the face of economic recession.

He said: “Our watchword is: ‘Agriculture with results’. Our goal is to always produce graduates that will be self-reliant and we have been succeeding in that.”

According to him, emphasis of the college on value chain training was rewarded when the National Board for Technical Education(NBTE), its regulatory agency, approved the curriculum, which FECA jointly facilitate with six other Nigerian Institutions under its partnership with Switzerland Government Capacity Building for Agriculture Education (CBAEN). “This curriculum, developed based on FECA experience, would now be used in all colleges of agriculture as well as polytechnic nationwide,” Odedina added.

The Registrar, Dr Pius Adebisi, who administered the oath of allegiance on the new students, urged them to face their studies squarely in order to succeed.

In a similar development, Plateau State University (PLASU) Bokkos, administered oath of matriculation for the 2017/208 academic session on 996 newly admitted students.

The vice chancellor, Prof. Doknan Shenni, who spoke to at the event, noted that of the 10,000 applicants, only 996 scaled the admission hurdle.

Two faculties are coming on board-Health Science and Law, Shenni announced.

He said: “The successful staging of the 1st and 2nd combined convocation ceremony has proved that the university has come to stay. Plateau State University will from now compete with similar institutions of learning not only in academic excellence, but in scientific innovation, research and above all in governance in line with global best practices.”

Charging the new students to shun social vices, Shenni equally appealed to prospective investors to put their money into the institution in view of its increased enrolment, and environmental-friendliness.

THE Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan (UI), Prof Isaac Adewole, yesterday said the institution would admit 3,700 of the 8,992 candidates who wrote the post-University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) last weekend.

The five best candidates will be given scholarships.

Adewole, who was represented by the Deputy-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emilolorun Ayelari, said the result is now available on the institution’s website.

The candidates are: Adetunji AbdulRaham (55328333ED, 86, Law); Amaji Obinna Charles (55110959DE, 86, Medicine and Surgery); Adebiyi Tijesunimi (55361970BC, 85, Electrical and Electronics Engineering);  Oke Dorcas (55974720AJ, 83, Medicine and Surgery) and Olowosulu Cassandra Olawumi (56630251JB, 83, Medicine and Surgery).

The VC said: “23,200 candidates scored above 200 in UTME, 20,800 applied for the post UTME in our institution and only 19,268 took the screening and examination.

“Our new method of admitting students with the O’ Level and UTME result has really reduced students from withdrawing in their first year due to poor performances.

“The performances of the five best candidates will be monitored and they may be retained after their studies here.

“The public is hereby warned not to influence the admission officials.”

Sterling Bank targets 700 ATMs by year-end

Sterling Bank is planning to increase its Auto-mated Teller Machines (ATMs) from 585 units to 700 by year-end.

In a statement, the bank said it is taking the decision to ensure ease of transaction by customers in the coming year, and also cushion the effect of the perceived reintroduction of the ATM charge of N65 on Remote-on-Us Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transactions on its customers.

Besides, the bank said that it would start the 2015 financial year with 5,000 Point of Sales (POS) terminals.

The bank said it is increasing the ATMs galleries in response to its customers requests nationwide.  It said the ATMs will be located in strategic places, while a robust infrastructure to support the expansion has also been put in place.

Remote-on-Us transaction occurs when a cardholder goes to the ATM of a bank other than his or her own bank to make a withdrawal. The cardholder will be charged N65 after making three withdrawals from such ATMs within a given month. The bank where his or her account is domiciled will be responsible for the payment of the charge of N65 for the first three withdrawals from another bank’s ATM.

The Group Head, Strategy & Communications, Shina Atilola, said that Sterling Bank has commenced aggressive roll out of ATMs nationwide.

“We have almost doubled our ATM count between December last year and September 2014. We started the year with 300 ATMs, but aimed to close the year with about 700. This would involve additional deployments at existing locations, partner locations and ATM galleries.”

He noted that beyond cash withdrawals, customers could confirm their account balances, do transfers (inter and intra bank), pay bills such as electricity and DSTV and buy airtime at the Bank’s ATMs.

“As a financial institution poised to enrich lives, Sterling Bank will continue to maintain high quality ATM services by supporting the inter-operability of the payment system in the country. We will continue to deploy more ATMs to promote the cashless policy of the CBN and ensure that our customers are provided with enough platforms to transact their financial transactions,” he stressed.

Fans to pay N1,700 to watch Eagles

Soccer fans wishing to watch this year’s annual Nelson Mandela Challenge billed for Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban will pay N1, 700 and N850 respectively to do so come August 14.

Tickets for the challenge in honour of the former South African President went on sale Wednesday in the former Apartheid enclave for R50 and R100. Bafana Bafana will host Eagles who early this year proved they are the best team in the continent when they edged out hard fighting Burkina Fasso to lift the continental diadem in South Africa.

Shoprite and Computicket across the country have been designated as outlets for ticket sales. As a build up to the Challenge, South Africa Football Association (SAFA) confirmed a that number of activities have been lined up as part of the Mandela International Day.

Already, local advertisements have been intensified ahead of the challenge with a view to creating awareness and ensuring full capacity turnout. Lovers of the now popular vuvuzela are sure to have a full dose of it as Bafana Bafana fans have began preparation for the D Day, with many insisting nothing can be more befitting than ensuring a grand show for the Mandela, popularly called Madiba in South Africa.
