  • Police arraign pastor who defrauded members of N1. 5m contribution

    Michael Udom, a 52-year-old pastor at Pinnacle of Praise Church, Lagos, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding his church members of N1.5 million on the pretext of coordinating a monthly contribution,

    Udom, whose lives on No. 76 Ikorodu Rd., Fadeyi, Lagos, is charged with three counts of conspiracy, fraud and stealing.

    The prosecution alleged the accused obtained a sum of N1.5 million from one Sylvia Nnamdi and Alfred Olugbenga, under the pretences of being a pastor and coordinator of one Ajor Thrift Association, a representation he knew to be false.

    Police Sgt. Michael Unah told the court that the accused committed the offences with other two still at large sometimes in May at Fadeyi in Lagos.

    He said the accused, which portrayed himself as a pastor and the coordinator of the Ajor Thrift Association to the complainants, convinced them to join the contribution but converted the sum of N1.5 million to his own personal use.

    Unah said that the accused refused to give the complainants the money when it was their turn to collect.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, admitted the accused  to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Fashola ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.

    He also ordered that the sureties must be blood relations of the accused and also reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 314 prescribes a 15-year jail term for false pretenses while section 287 provides seven years for stealing.

    The Magistrate adjourned the case until Jan. 22 for mention.

  • Man, 57, in court for assaulting police officer

    A 57-year-old man, Mark Ijesha, who allegedly assaulted a police officer on lawful duty, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Ijesha, whose address was not provided, is being tried on a four-count charge of assault, obstruction of official duty, conspiracy and breach of public peace.

    Ijesha who pleaded not guilty, was said to have thrown a stone which hit the policeman on the neck.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that Ijesha and others still at large, committed the offences on Sept. 10, at No 82, Giwa St., Aboru Oke-Odo, Lagos.

    He said that the accused assaulted Insp. Idowu David while performing his lawful duty.

    “Ijesha deliberately threw a stone at the officer and hit him on his neck and caused breach of public peace by his conduct,” Unah told the court.

    The offences contravened Sections 174 (a) 246 (a) (b), 411, 350 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mr A.A Fashola, granted Ijesha bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He adjourned the case till Nov. 28, for trial.

  • Five security guards docked over theft of cables

    …gets N1.2m bail

    For allegedly stealing company’s cable worth N2.24 million, five security guards working at Cet Power Projects Nigeria Ltd, are facing trial at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    They were, however, released on bail in the sum of N1.25 million.

    The accused allegedly conspired with one of the store officers of the company to steal the cables, according to the prosecution.

    The accused, who are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, are Oluwaseye Oladokun, 41; Chukwuka Peters, 55; Austin Omoh, 39; Tony Oruamen, 28; and Timothy Chuckwudi, 42.

    The men allegedly committed the offences with five others still at large between February and May at Ogba in Ikeja area of Lagos.

    Sgt. Michael Unah told the court that the guards, who are staff members of Hitech Professional Securities, were hired by Cet Power Projects Nigeria Ltd.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

    The News men report that Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for stealing by employees while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the offences and were granted N250, 000 bail each with two sureties each in like sum.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, who gave the ruling, said the sureties should be gainfully with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case until July 11 for hearing.

  • Driver docked for allegedly bolting with employer’s N170, 000

    A 25-year-old driver, Seun Olowokeere, who allegedly stole his employer’s N170, 000, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Olowokeere, who resides at Oun Adio Market area of Ibadan, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, told the court that the accused committed the offences with some other persons still at large on March 18 at 4:00 p.m., along Tegna Road, Niger State.

    Unah said the accused stole the money from the complainant, Mr Victor Agwu, after their truck developed a mechanical fault on their way from Kano to Lagos.

    “The complainant asked the accused to look after the truck while he went in search of a mechanic.

    “Before the complainant got back, the accused had broken into the pigeon-hole of the truck, stolen the N170, 000 and ran away to Ibadan,” he said.

    Unah said the accused was later arrested at Ebute-Ero market in Lagos Island.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Fashola said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case until May 28, for mention.
