    Security guards arraigned for N3m goods theft

    Four security guards, who allegedly broke into a plaza in Lagos and stole goods valued at N3 million, were on Wednesday brought before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court.

    The men were, however, released on N400, 000 with four sureties in like sum after pleading not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Paul, who gave the ruling, said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also provide evidence of tax payments to the government.

    The accused — Abolarinwa Azeez, 34; Ogbole Okatipu, 26; Ferdinand Muolokwu, 34; and Okorie Ifeanyi, 32 — are facing a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

    Police Prosecutor Anthonia Osayande told the court that the accused with others still at large committed the offences on June 11 at Mio Plaza at No. 1, Alhaji Masha Road, Surulere.

    ‎According to him, the four guards conspired and broke into the plaza and stole 14 units of Ipod touch (phones) valued at N3 million, property of Lords Ltd.

    He alleged that they also stole three Dell laptops, 80 hard drive and a DVD player valued at N250,000 belonging to Hyperlink Ltd.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 287, 309 (1-2), 410 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The case was adjourned until July 18 for mention.

    Police arraign man over theft of phone, N476,000

    A 30-year-old man, Chimezie Dickson, who allegedly stole a cell phone valued at N8,000 and N476,000 cash, was on Friday arraigned in Lagos.

    Dickson whose address was not given, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and breach of peace before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on June 9, 2017, between 6.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. at Ojuelegba in Surulere area of Lagos.‎

    ‎Okoliko said that the accused and the others conspired and stole a phone valued N8,000 and N18,000 cash and additional N450,000, totalling N476,000 from a truck driven by Mr Olanrewaju Isreal.

    He alleged that Israel kept some valuables in the truck, and that the accused, who borrowed the vehicle, stole the valuables.

    Okoliko said that the accused later unlawfully towed the truck with registration number KTU 77 XJ to an unknown destination without Israel’s consent, claiming that the vehicle developed a fault.

    “The accused and others conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by unlawfully towing the truck without the consent of the driver,” he said.

    He told the court that the offences contravened Sections 168(d), 280(a) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A.A. Paul, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Paul ordered that the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused while the other must be gainfully employed, adding that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.‎

    The case was adjourned until July 27 for mention.‎

    Man in court for alleged N400,000 fraud

    A 34-year-old man, Francis Nwala, who allegedly collected N400,000 from one Nwankwo Afamuefula, under false pretences, was on Thursday docked in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Nwala, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and fraud.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.‎

    ‎ The prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the accused with others at large committed the offences on March 23 at Agbara area. ‎

    According to him, the accused conspired with others and obtained N400,000 from Afamuefula, by showing him one Toyota Sienna car that does not belong to him.‎‎‎

    ‎The offences contravened the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).‎

    ‎The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Paul granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until July 21 for mention.

    Man docked for assault

    A Surulere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on Thursday granted bail in the sum of N50,000 to one Chigemeze Okorie, 22, over the alleged assault of one Chibuike Udemba, during a fight.

    The presiding Magistrate, Mr A.A. Paul, who gave the ruling, asked Okorie to also provide one surety, as part of the bail conditions.

    The magistrate said the surety must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Okorie, whose address was not provided at the court, is facing a two count charge of assault and grievous harm.‎

    ‎The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 31, at Popo St., Yaba Market, in Surulere, Lagos.‎

    He said the accused did unlawfully assault Udemba by pushing him and also doing him a grievous harm by biting off his third finger on his right hand, during a fight in the market.‎‎

    Okoliko said the offences contravened Sections 172 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The magistrate adjourned the case till July 21, for mention.

    Apprentice bags two months imprisonment for stealing motor batteries

    A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced a 29-year-old apprentice, Sodiq Oloko, to two months imprisonment for stealing two motor batteries valued at N116, 000.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A.A Paul, who pronounced the verdict, however, ordered that the two months’ imprisonment was without any option of fine.

    Oloko faced a two-count charge of stealing and malicious damage.
    ‎
    The accused, whose address was not provided, pleaded guilty to the charge.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 30 at No. 14, Sologun St., Aguda, Surulere, Lagos, at about 03.00 a.m.

    He alleged that the accused went to the store room of the workshop where he was an apprentice and stole two motor batteries valued at N116,000, property of Ben Adeniyi

    The prosecutor said the accused maliciously damaged two padlocks to the store room, valued N1, 500‎ making it to seem as if someone broke into the store room. ‎
    ‎
    He noted that the offence contravened Sections 285(1) and 348 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Saleswoman arraigned for stealing baby accessories

    A 25-year-old saleswoman, Bola Lawal, who allegedly stole baby accessories valued at N176,500 from one Oyeyemi Odebunmi, was on Wednesday arraigned in Lagos.

    The accused was brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court on a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 24, at about 2.00.p.m., at Akerele Street, Surulere, Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole the goods from the shop of the complainant.

    Okoliko said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A.A. Paul, granted the accused a bail of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

    He said that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the other should be a community leader or a cleric.‎

    The magistrate said the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment, while their addresses should be verified.‎‎

    He adjourned the case until June 21, for mention.

  • Two men arraigned over generator theft

    Two men- Ebuka Ede and Buma Whyte – who allegedly broke into a house and stole a Thermocool generator valued at N140, 000, were on Thursday charged before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused – Ede, 25, and Whyte, 22 – whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.‎

    The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The accused and others now at large committed the offences at No. 94, Adetola St., Aguda in Surulere at about 5.00 a.m. on May 8, according to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko.

    ‎ Okoliko said the accused was caught by policemen on patrol while trying to cart away the generator but others escaped.

    He told the court that the complainant, Hillary Nwazomoh, who had reported the incident at the police station, was later invited to identify the recovered generator if it was his own.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 (1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A.A. Paul, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

    Paul said the surety, who must be a blood relation of the accused, should also provide evidence of tax payment.

    He ordered ‎the accused to deposit N25, 000 each into the account of the court’s registrar.

    The case was adjourned until June 6 for mention.‎

  • Man charged with N850,000 visa fraud

    A 34-year-old man, Oluwaseyi Adefin, who allegedly defrauded a woman of N850,000 on pretext of securing a Schengen visa for her, on Wednesday appeared in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.‎

    ‎Adefin, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

    The accused committed the offences sometime in August 2016 at No. 24, Adisa Bashau St., Off Adelabu, Surulere, at about 1.00 p.m., Police Prosecutor Christopher Okokliko told the court.

    ‎He said the accused obtained N850,000  from the complainant, Fibiana Ikechion, with a promise to get a Schengen visa for her.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Schengen 26-member-states include Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain.

    Okoliko said the accused failed to procure the visa for the complainant or refund the money.

    ‎The offences contravened Sections 285(1) and 321 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).‎

    NAN also reports that Section 285 (1) stipulates three years for stealing, while Section 321 provides two years for obtaining by false pretences.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.‎

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Chief Magistrate, Mr. A.A. Paul, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two  sureties in like sum.

    Paul said one of the sureties must be gainfully employed, while the other surety should be a landed property owner in Lagos State.

    In addition, the sureties ‎should provide evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    ‎The case was adjourned until May 31 for mention.

  • Man arraigned for robbing at ATM point

    A 30-year-old, Yemi Solomon, who allegedly robbed a man of phone worth N38, 000 and N7, 000 at ATM point, on Thursday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Solomon, 30, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and threat to life.

    According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, the accused committed the offences at the premises of Zenith Bank on Ogunlanna Drive, Surulere,  on April 14 at about 2.30.p.m.

    Okoliko said the accused stole N7,000 ‎and a Techo phone valued at N38,000, totaling N45,000 from the complainant, Chinma Ugochukwu.

    He alleged that Solomon trailed the complainant to the premises of the bank, where he compelled him to use his ATM card to withdraw money.

    “The accused ordered Ugochukwu to hand over the money and the phone to him.

    “Immediately the accused stepped out of the bank premises, the complainant quickly informed the security guards on duty and they trailed the accused and arrested him,” he said.‎

    The offences contravened Sections 280(1) (a) and 301 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr.A.A. Paul, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum.‎

    Paul said the surety must be gainfully employed and should also provide evidence of tax payment to the government.

  • Theft of N2.4m goods: suspects get bail

    A Surulere Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday in Lagos, granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 to three suspects, standing trial for allegedly breaking into a shop to steal property valued N2.4 million.

    The suspects are Linda Ekpo (female), 22; Chinwe Chukwu (female), 26 and Aliu Ibrahim, (male) 28.

    The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, said the accused and others now at large, committed the offences at 90,Adeniran Ogunsanya street,Surulere area of Lagos on April 18.

    He alleged that the accused broke into a shop belonging to Sophia Anwuli and stole valuable items including 40 pieces of Jeans trousers valued N640,000 and 30 pieces of male T-shirts worth N260,000,.

    Other stolen items the prosecutor listed were: 50 male casual T-shirts valued N400,000 and six pieces of female purses worth N480,000.

    Okoliko told the court that the police apprehended the accused people while running away with the stolen property.‎

    According to him, the offences contravened Sections 285(7), 308 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

    The three accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. ‎

    In granting bail to the accused persons, Chief Magistrate A. A. Paul, directed them to provide a surety each in like sum, who must be a community leader with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned till May 10 for mention.
