    Security guard in court for theft of phones, laptops

    A 31-year old security man, Jimmy Ushie, who allegedly stole laptops, mobile phones and money from his company, on Friday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is being tried for burglary, stealing and causing damages.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that the offences were committed on Oct. 19 at 7, Seinde Calisto St., Oshodi, a suburb of Lagos.

    Unah alleged that the accused burgled Tee By Link Security Company, where he worked.

    ‘‘The accused stole two laptops valued at N350,000, three mobile phones valued at N27,000, an MTN modem and N21,500 cash.

    ‘‘The accused also damaged keys valued at N29,500, CCTV cameras valued at N178,000 and POP ceiling valued at N25,500, property of Tee By Link Security company,’’ he told the court.

    Unah also said that the accused was captured on the CCTV camera and handed over to the police.

    The offences contravened the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Gbajumo, admitted him to bail for N200,000 with two sureties.

    Gbajumo adjourned the case until Dec. 4 for mention.

    Bricklayer in court for allegedly raping food vendor

    A bricklayer, Emmanuel John, was on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping a 38-year-old food vendor.

    John, 34, however, denied the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Gbajumo, who gave the ruling, also told the accused to provide two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

    According to Gbajumo, the sureties should be gainfully employed and also show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, said the accused, who pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and rape, committed the offences on June 20 at Addo in Ajah, near Lagos.

    Unah alleged that the accused, who resides at Mashy Hill Estate in Ajah, conspired with another person now at large, to forcefully have carnal knowledge of the complainant.

    Unah said that the complainant she was hawking cooked beans and yam when the accused called her and told her he wanted to buy beans.

    The prosecutor said the accused convinced the victim to follow him to an uncompleted building where he claimed he was working, to collect money for the beans he bought.

    He said the complainant, who had no idea that the accused was planning to rape her, followed him.

    “The food vendor said that immediately she entered the building, John’s accomplice removed her wrapper and when she tried to scream, the man pushed her on the floor and held her hands, while John raped her.

    “She also claimed that John’s accomplice also forcefully had carnal knowledge of her without her consent.

    “The complainant said that they pushed her out of the building half-naked, after taking advantage of her.

    “The food vendor said she was helped by a man, who saw her crying outside the uncompleted building.

    “She said the man stormed into the building and caught John after she narrated her ordeal to the man.

    “The complainant reported the case to the police and John was arrested while his accomplice is still at large,’’ Unah said.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 260 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 260 prescribes 14-year jail term upon conviction for rape.

    The case was adjourned until Sept. 9 for mention.

    Two in court for stealing 170 cartons of soap

    A truck driver and a motor boy who allegedly stole 170 cartons of soap valued at N1.35 million from Tropical Nature Company, were on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, Lawrence Afolayan,43, and Benjamin Peter,29, were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The accused persons are both residents of Ogba Area of Ikeja, Lagos.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 2 at Tropical Nature Company Ltd. located at Ogba Area of Ikeja, Lagos.

    Unah said that the accused conspired to steal 170 cartons of soap valued at N1.35 million property of Tropical Nature Company Ltd.

    He alleged that the accused were directed to deliver 3000 cartons of Dudu Osun soap to a customer in Kano.

    However, Afolayan and Peter claimed that they were robbed of 170 cartons by armed robbers on their way to Kano while sleeping, the prosecutor said.

    Unah said that when the accused told the management about the incident, the company suspected that they must have sold the cartons of soap and converted the proceeds for their personal use.

    The management reported the case to the police and the accused were arrested for further questioning.

    However, the duo pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Gbajumo , granted them bail in the sum of N250,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    She, however, adjourned the case till July 12, for trial.

  • Ex-banker in court over N6.8m theft

    A 38-year-old ex-banker, Chidi Idems, who allegedly obtained N6.8 million from a customer under false pretences, on Wednesday appeared before an IkejaMagistrates’ Court.

    Idems, a resident of Abule-Egba area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a five -count charge of conspiracy, stealing, obtaining under false pretences, forgery and presumption as to false pretences under certain circumstances.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 2, 2016 at Agidingbi area of Ikeja.

    Unah alleged that the accused, with others now at large, fraudulently obtained N6.8 million from one Olabisi Shittu on the pretext of assisting her to transfer the money to her customer in China.

    He said that the complainant, who had no idea that Idems had been sacked at the bank, transferred N6.8 million to him.

    Unah said that the accused converted the money to his own personal use and forged a telex transfer form showing that he had paid the money to the complainant’s customer.

    The prosecutor said that Idems gave the forged document to Shittu, who had no idea it was fake.

    Unah said that Shittu did not know she had been duped until she received a call from her customer in China, who claimed he had not received the money.

    “Shittu quickly rushed to the bank to report the accused to the head of operations, only to discover that Idems had been sacked from the bank months ago for another offence.

    “The complainant said that when she called the accused on phone to demand for her money, he started making up flimsy excuses.

    “She said that after so much persistence on her part, Idems gave her a Zenith bank cheque of N6.8 million.

    “Shittu said that when she presented the cheque at the bank it was dishonoured due to insufficient funds in the accused’s account.

    “The complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was apprehended and taken to the police station for further questioning, ”Unah said.

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 312, 319, 363 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused risks a 15-year jail term on conviction for obtaining by false pretences, according to the provisions of the Criminal Law.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Gbajumo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum. She adjourned the case until July 12 for mention.

  • Saleswoman faces N3.7m theft charge

    For allegedly stealing N 3.7 million from her employer, a 28-year-old saleswoman Feyikemi Olatunji , was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Olatunji , a resident of Agege area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing preferred against her.

    The accused, according to the prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, committed the offence between year 2016 and March 17, 2017, at 1, Sharwama Outlet, situated at Ogba area of Lagos.

    Unah alleged that the accused, who works as a saleswoman at 01 Sharwama Outlet, stole N3.7 million from her employer, Ebunoluwa Adeyemi.

    He said that the accused was in charge of depositing the money made from sales at the bank.

    The prosecutor said that the accused, instead of depositing the whole money made from sales in the company’s account, deposited half of it into her own personal account.

    “When Adeyemi eventually discovered that the accused was stealing from her, she decided to confront Olatunji, who denied stealing any money from her.

    “Adeyemi reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested for further questioning,” Unah said.

    He noted that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Gbajumo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

  • Salesman arraigned for allegedly knocking down pedestrian

    A 34-year-old salesman, Dotun Ayodele, who allegedly knocked down a 31-year-old pedestrian, Jesinta Nduba, on Wednesday, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Ayodele, who resides at Alakuko, a suburb of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of dangerous driving and manslaughter brought against him.

    Prosecutor Mike Unah insisted that the accused committed the offences by driving his car recklessly and knocking down a pedestrian, Justina.

    He alleged that the accused, who drove a car with registration no. BDG 250 CB committed the offences on March 3 along Segun Akindele Street, Akinde in Alakuko.

    “A team of traffic management officials rushed to the scene of the accident and took the lifeless body of the victim to the hospital,” Unah told the court.

    The offences contravened Sections 19 and 20 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Gbajumo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Gbajumo said the surety must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until May 2 for mention.

     

  • Bread seller docked for assaulting baker

    An 18-year-old bread seller, Kharimot Adeniyi, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly assaulting a bakery owner, Mr Mojeed Adedeji over some loaves of bread.

    Kharimot, who lives at Egbatedo St. Oko-Oba, Agege, a surb of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of assault, breach of peace and damage preferred against her.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Unah Mike, told the court that the accused on March 19 at Egbatedo St. Oko-oba, Agege, Lagos assaulted Adedeji.

    The prosecutor also said Kharimot collected 5 loaves of bread and later denied that it was 4 she collected, which led to an argument.

    According to the prosecutor, during the argument, the accused slapped and held Adedeji on the neck.

    “She also damaged the T-shirt of the complainant, valued at N2, 000”.
    “The accused also assaulted a Senior Police Officer; SP Regina Achom by dipping her finger into her eyes and tore her blouse valued N10, 000,’’ he said.

    According to her, the accused also committed the crime while Achom was trying to calm her at the police station.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 171, 166 and 348 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State, 2011.

  • NURTW official arraigned for hitting conductor with sharp object

    A 22-year-old union worker, Sunday Olaopa, who allegedly assaulted a conductor by hitting him with a sharp object on his manhood, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Olaopa, an official of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers (NURTW), is standing trial on a one-count charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that the accused, who entered a “not guilty plea, committed the offence on Feb. 23 at Iju Ishaga Garage, Lagos.

    Unah alleged that Olaopa, who resides at Olayinka Street, Ajuwon, Lagos, assaulted the complainant, Ubong Bassey, by using a sharp object to hit him on his manhood.

    He said the accused hit the complainant because he refused to drop his ticket money on time.

    Unah said that Bassey sustained injuries on his manhood, as a result of the sharp object Olaopa used to hit him.

    He said that Bassey reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.

    The offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for assault occasioning harm.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. A.O Gbajumo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing till March 20.
