Mass Communication students at Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic(AAPOLY), have held  a presentation tailored towards promoting the practice of public relations among students of the department.

The event which was themed : “Exploring the corporate world”, had students grouped into different teams with the task of making public presentations on assigned topics. It was  held at the annex campus of the Polytechnic, Abusi Edumare, Ogun State.

Students were assigned various presentations ranging from planning an annual company event to organising a networking breakfast, a fashion-themed pop event, and hosting an appreciation dinner, effectively utilising all public relations and copywriting techniques.

The presentation which is a practical part of a course, Public Relations Copy Writing, is being offered by the Higher National Diploma (HND) 1 students in the polytechnic. The course teaches people to communicate with a target public and helps amplify messages about a product, service, or organisation.

The lecturer in charge, Saidat Adeoye, a public relations professional and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), emphasised the need for practical presentations in this course.

“I told the students that we need to explore the corporate world. If I did not give them the theme that they needed to unlock and some of the PR events, majority of them wouldn’t have gone far to research what exactly their assigned tasks are all about, you know, in the course of making research about it, they could get exposed to certain things,” she   said.

She posited that the course is bridging the gap between the town and gown of public relations practice in Nigeria, while also noting that participation in this course will help make students employable in the future.

“When they understand it and they start working in various organisations or as a PR expert or PR officer, they will be able to balance the relationship between the town and the gown, because it is one thing to learn about PR, it is another thing to know how to implement some of these practices, it is one thing to learn about it and it is another thing to make the two sides balanced, so there is a way to go about it, to ensure that, the things that were learned in school are discharged accordingly, then there will be a balance between the town and the gown” she said.

Journalists must therefore, pay attention to safety issues that may lead to their untimely demise. As early as possible, Journalists must know basic safety issues if they are going to stay long in the profession.

“ Knowing this, AFYMP has taken it upon itself to expose early and young media professionals to these basic truths hence the need to organise this for UCJAAPOLY.  We hope the knowledge gained will help participants to be safety conscious,” he said.
