Gani Adams honours Segun Ajiboye with Aare ona kakanfo title

Aare ona kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams has honoured Chief Olusegun Ajiboye, as Otun- Barooyin Aare ona kakanfo of Yorubaland.

The event was held at the Omole Phase 2, Ikeja, Lagos home of the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land.

Ajiboye, a journalist and former Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to two successive governors of Ondo the late Olusegun Agagu in July 2007 and the late Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu also in 2017.

Speaking on the reason for the title, Iba Gani Adams, said the former CPS got the new chieftaincy title as a reward for his honesty, hard work, and belief in Yoruba culture and tradition.

“Chief Segun Ajiboye is a product of God’s grace. He was supposed to be honoured with the title in January alongside other members of the new council, but his coronation was postponed till May, to fulfil all the traditional arrangements.

“It must be stated also that the title was a well-deserved honour for him because he has played important roles at different times as a member of this great institution for the past two decades now, using his media experiences to promote the cause of Yoruba race.

“As far as I am concerned, the Irun Akoko, in present-day, Akoko North West Local Government of Ondo state, is a man of truth and honesty.

Speaking further, Iba Adams said the revered stool of the Aare Onakakanfo had a profound historical background that had been in existence since 1530, adding that no amount of misinformation could change the history of the title.

He later presented the Staff of the Office, a certificate of honour, and other paraphernalia of the stool to the Otun-Barooyin Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland.

  • Aare Ona Kakanfo installs 21 chiefs across Yorubaland

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, on Saturday said the restructuring of Nigeria was important for the country to rise above its challenges and stay on the path of progress.

Adams made the statement in Lagos at the installation of 21 Aare Onakakanfo chiefs –in-council.

Adams said that restructuring to strengthen all the federating units would accelerate development of Nigeria.

‘’Solution to the problems bedeviling Nigeria is for the country to adopt restructuring.

“We are living with these problems because we are reluctant to retrace our steps and adopt the system that suits us,” he said.

Adams added that strengthening the federation units would help the country to realise its development goals.

He said that the appointment and installation of the 21 chiefs was to assist him in his assignment as the Aare Onakakanfo, for success.

He said that Yorubaland was vast and that he needed to delegate responsibilities to people across all the Yoruba speaking states since he could not be everywhere at the same time.

Adams said that appointment of chiefs by Aare Ona Kakanfo had precedence and that his action was sanctioned by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.

‘’I appointed these 21 chiefs to help me to succeed. As the Aare Ona Kakanfo, my job covers the entire Yorubaland, but I cannot be everywhere at the same time.

‘’The people I am installing today as chiefs from everywhere we have indigenous Yoruba people, including Kogi and Kwara, will act for me in their respective domains and handle issues.

‘’They will interface with their local Obas and traditional chiefs to ensure peace and development in Yorubaland.

‘’I am not the first Aare to have appointed chiefs. In fact, I am the 13th Aare to have done that.

“The only two who did not appoint chiefs were Aare Abiola and Akintola and that was because they were seriously engaged in politics and had limited time,” he said

Adams that the appointment was to ensure effective service  in the interest of the Yoruba race.

He said he would soon appoint a 70-member advisory council to advise him and his chiefs on ways to further move the Yoruba race forward.

He urged the 21 chiefs who, he said, were selected based on their pedigrees, to justify the confidence reposed on them, by serving the people diligently.

Some of the installed chiefs are a Labour Party chieftain, Dr Kayode Ajulo (Maiyegun Aare); Mr Ademola Ige (Baameto Aare); Mr Shola Oshunkeye (Baaroyin Aare) and Prof. Taofeek Raheem (Parakoyi Aare). (NAN)

  • Kayode Ajulo: Celebrating a courageous Mayegun Aare Ona Kakanfo

Some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.  Comrade Kayode Ajulo, like some of us are often more comfortable in addressing, no doubt belongs to both categories of that aphorism.
A Man of strong antecedent in the tourtous journey, for the eventual enthronement of democracy in our country, Nigeria, Ajulo is known as a fighter, an inspiring leader, defender of justice and friend of many.
From his very young age as an undergraduate of the University of Jos, through the now still counting many years of activism as a Civil Society leader and legal authority,  Kayode Ajulo has dedicated his entire life for the down trodden masses of this country. Fearless but yet God fearing, Ajulo has strived without limitations, to take  upon himself the neglected responsibilities of our  leaders, both politically, socially and otherwise. He has continued to  trod the path where other men dreaded. In defiance to personal comforts and numerous  threats to his precious life, he has gallantly, and in most cases solely fought against human rights violations, Injustice, bad leadership, corruption as well as demand for the respect for the rule of law in Nigeria. Kayode Ajulo consistently maintained the frontline position as one of the few loud voices for the oppressed Nigerians.
Without minding whose ox is gored, Ajulo has continued to demonstrate the love of God for mankind by placing his life on the line. It may be an understatement to say that the magnitude of Kayode Ajulo’s sacrificial service for Nigerians is incomparable to that of many other Nigerians of his age, social background and profession.
Comrade Kayode Ajulo’s struggles cut across ethnic, religious and gender boundary. He is selfless, dedicated and relentless in his struggle to see a better Nigeria nation where the rule of law can be upheld, welfare of the people prioritise and corruption eradicated.
Do I need to say, that the Yoruba Generalisimo, Iba Gani Adams the Aare Ona Kakanfo is meticulous in his choice of Kayode Ajulo, as the Mayegun Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba race.
The New Mayegun Aare Ona Kakanfo is a man whose life is characterized with  love, wisdom and courage. Generations of yet to be born Nigerians will learn about the courage and consistency of this young and vibrant Generational Ambassador, for the sacrifices he has continued to make,  to see a better Nigeria whose endowed resources can be used to provide excellent leadership, affordable health care services, sound  educational, modern infrastructure which is the least that can be offered to Nigerians. They will learn about his clamor for the rule of law and respect for human dignity.

Till date, Ajulo has remained a reference point in the battle against stagnation, He is a man who many see as a courageous and fearless fighter. He is a patriot, motivator, strategic thinker and risk taker.
Brave and bold, Ajulo is never intimidated by whatever circumstances encountered in the course of fighting for the oppressed people of our society. Endowed with a rare organisational ability, mobilisation prowess, uncommon acumen, masterful logic, and foresight, Ajulo’s pastime is strategic thinking.
Interestingly, despite sometimes been at loggerheads, both Iba Gani Adams, the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land and Late Dr. Frederick Fasehun, the founding fathers of Oodua Progressive Congress, (OPC), have a common ally in Kayode Ajulo and constantly share testimony Ajulo competence and legal dexterity as well as the free legal assistance render to them by Kayode Ajulo during their struggling days.
Ajulo is well know for his unparalleled philanthropic gestures in kind and cash to low and mighty in the society as testimonies abounds on this rare quality of the Ondo State born lawyer.
No doubt before now, reward for Activism, Legal Successes and service to humanity  have come for Ajulo in torrents in various dimensions. He has received many honorary chieftaincy titles, local and International Awards and special recognition. But this historic conferment of the Mayegun Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba is significant and brings to the fore, the strategic position that Kayode Ajulo now occupies within the context of the Yoruba nation, and her history.
Lovers of Democracy and Justice all over the World can’t but celebrate this courageous and dogged fighter, a General of many battles and we can only pray, that God grants him the wisdom and long life, as he continues the journey, for an egalitarian society.

  • Adams holds thanksgiving at Ijo Orunmila

Adams holds thanksgiving at Ijo Orunmila

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Otunba Gani Adams has held a thanksgiving service at the Ijo Orunmila Ato (Indigene Faith of Orunmila) in Ebute Metta, Lagos. Amid celebration and prayers, Adams, who is also Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) National Coordinator, said he was fulfilling the instructions given him during his rite of installation, to respect all, especially traditional religion.

The Aare Ona Kakanfo (Generalissimo) of Yoruba land, Otunba Gani Adams, is said to have been told by Ifa, the Yoruba god of divination, to constantly put Eledumare, (God Almighty) first in everything he does as his faith in God has brought him this far, even as it was said to have added that Adams’ grass-to-grace story has been attributed to his tenacity, determination and humility in taking advice from elders.

The instruction was given to Adams during the thanksgiving service he held at the Ijo Orunmila Ato (Indigene Faith of Orunmila) in Ebute Metta, Lagos.

The event held at the Ifa’s temple had in attendance many Ifa adherents, including friends and guests of the OPC leader.

Amid singing, wining and dining, a prayer session for Adams was led by the Akoda (chief priest) of Ijo Orunmila Chief Demola Fabunmi and his Aseda (assistant chief priest) Chief Awodiran Agboola.

Barely two weeks ago, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi conferred on Adams the title of Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, in a historic event at the Durbar Stadium Oyo town, Oyo State.

Incidentally, Adams emerged 20 years after the death of former holder of the title and acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO).

In his brief sermon, Fabunmi noted that Adams deserve to be grateful to Eledumare and nature that have been kind to him.

Drawing extensively from Ifa oracle- Ogbe Otura, Fabunmi went into the myth of the oracle which conferred special blessing of Ope (palm tree) on the third child of Orunmila for keeping his father’s secrets.

“According to Ogbe Otura, Gani Adams represents Ope (palm) tree which is the third child of Orunmila. Ope had two elder siblings- agbon (coconut) and Okun (thread). Three of them had been warned to always keep their father’s secret.

“However, on a certain day, Orunmila broke the two key taboos -taking palm wine and eating dog meat, actions which were against Eledumare’s instructions.

“While coconut and thread exposed and made jest of their father that he was a drunk, the palm tree only whispered into his father’s ear that he had broken his instructions. He covered his father’s nakedness as a result of his drunkenness.  He chose not to share the information with anyone.

“When Orunmila woke up, and saw what happened, he called Ope aside and prayed that he would be a father of many generations. At the same time, he cursed his two other siblings. Gani Adams is that Ope Orunmila specially blessed,” Fabunmi said.

Chief Agboola said the sermon emphasised the myth of ori (destiny), in Ifa mythology, adding that it is Adams’ destiny that has propelled him to greatness.

“The secret of Yoruba is now in his (Adams) hands because of his new title as the Aare Ona Kakanfo,” Agboola added.

“Gani has been omo odo agba (a child that learned wise counsel from elders). Aside, he has always been in the right place at the right time. His ori has worked well for him; therefore anybody that antagonises him will be dealt with by Eledumare.”

One of Adams’ well-wishers at the event, the Eze Ndigbo of Mushin, Dr George Chukwudi, told Southwest Report that his presence was to identify with Adams.

According to him, Adams’ choice as the Aare Ona Kakanfo could not have come at a better time than now when Nigeria suffers insecurity and needless deaths.

He said: “His (Adams) choice is very appropriate and timely so that he can use his good offices to unite Yoruba leaders and extend olive branch to other parts of the country.

“I am sure he (Adams) did not push for this title. It is destiny that bestows it on him. So, I will advise him to continue to exercise that humility he was known for before becoming the Aare Ona Kakanfo.”

Chief Chukwudi, who is also the Mayor of Ladipo Market in Lagos, advised the Federal Government to do more in securing lives and property, adding that the unity of Nigeria lies in her ability to co-exist peacefully.

In his thanksgiving message, Adams said he was complying with instructions given to him during his rites of installation as Aare.

“Remember that I went into seclusion ahead of my installation. I was briefed (during the seclusion) by leaders of the three religions to honour and respect Christianity, Islam and traditional religions.

“I will continue to express my gratitude to God and my coming here is one of it. About 80,000 people across all walks of life came for my installation. It was a big success for me. Just yesterday, (Friday) I had a thanksgiving service at the FESTAC Central Mosque and tomorrow, (Sunday) I shall also be attending another thanksgiving service in church so that I can complete the cycle of the three religions,” he said.

Adams reiterated his desire to use his new office to unite Yoruba leaders regardless of individual’s religion and political leanings.

Adeboye salutes Adams on installation as Aare Ona Kakanfo

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has congratulated Dr. Gani Adams on his installation as the Aare Ona Kakanfo of the Yoruba.

In a letter to Adams, who is also the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU), the cleric regretted his inability to attend the installation on January 13 at Durbar Stadium in Oyo town of Oyo State.

He said it was because of his evangelism duties within and outside Nigeria.

The letter, dated January 17, reads: “Grace be unto you and peace from God, our Father. We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

“We congratulate you on your installation as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land.

“We regret our inability to attend. Constraints include scheduled annual commitments year in year out at home and abroad.

“Be assured of our continuous love and prayers.”

Adams: 25 people contested for Aare Ona Kakanfo title

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of the Yoruba, Gani Adams, has said 25 influential Yoruba indigenes contested for the position.

He said a top pastor of Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) predicted his victory as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo.

Adams spoke at a special thanksgiving service marking his successful installation at the Genesis parish of the church at Alakuko in Lagos.

The Aare reiterated his commitment to the development of Yoruba cultural values and identity.

He said he was the least richest among those who contested for the title.

According to him, his victory is “an imposition on all of them by the Almighty God”.

Adams said: “Genesis Pastor Israel Ogundipe predicted my emergence as the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land. That is one of the reasons I respect him as a man of God.

“He was at my former office at Palm Groove and he made three predictions, all of which came to pass in less than two weeks. I saw humility and the holiness of God in him. He is one of the few pastors I respect.

“When we started jostling for the post, I told him to pray along with me and promised him that I would do my thanksgiving in his church, if the Lord answered my prayers.”

Also, Adams worshipped yesterday at Ijo Orunmila Adulawo in Ebute Meta, Lagos, for his successful installation as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of the Yoruba.

He arrived the church at 11:15 a.m with his wife, children, family and members of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) in a convoy of about 20 vehicles.

  • The thrills, frills of Aare Ona Kakanfo installation

The thrills, frills of Aare Ona Kakanfo installation

On Saturday, January 13, the Yoruba race witnessed the installation of the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo 20 years after the death of the last holder of the title, the late Chief MKO Abiola. OSEHEYE OKWUOFU and YINKA ADENIRAN report that the event was a platform to demonstrate Yoruba unity and rich cultural heritage of the people.

Aare Ona Kakanfo as a title

Historically, the title of Are Ona Kakanfo was created to check the excesses and frequent incursions of Ibaribas into Yoruba territories.

In the 16th Century, the Ibaribas used to terrorise the Yoruba nation and, when the then Alaafin realised the enormous nature of the problem, he created the title of the Aare Ona Kakanfo, with the sole duty of watching over the homeland with the help of assistant commanders who had a special army.

    History behind the title

Tracing the history of the Aare Ona Kakanfo, a retired Archbishop of Methodist Church Nigeria, Most Rev. Ayo Ladigbolu explained that the position of the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land by “antecedent is not for the highest bidder because it is a position which comes with sound mind and spiritual profundity reserved only for a person of substance who has fought for the interest of Yoruba race.

“The title can be traced back to the Old Oyo Empire. Oyo Empire was a Yoruba Empire of what is today Western and North-central Nigeria. Established in the 15th Century, the Oyo Empire grew to become one of the largest West African states. It rose through the outstanding organisational and administrative skills of the Yoruba people and wealth gained from trade.

“By structure, Oyo Empire has the Aare Ona Kankanfo in charge of the security of the empire. He is the generalissimo of all armies in Yoruba land, who was charged with the responsibility of protecting the empire against external attacks.

“Specifically, the creation of the title of Aare Ona Kakanfo was the direct consequence of the ideas of a former ruler of Old Oyo Empire, Alaafin Ajagbo, who reigned in the 1600s. His predecessors; from Ajaka, who succeeded Sango (the god of thunder), to Aganju, Kori, Oluaso, Onigbogi, Eguguojo, and Orompoto to Abipa and Obalokun, all suffered incessant attacks by neighbouring states.

“Aare Ona Kakanfo Ajagbo had a twin brother, Ajampati, and like the Biblical Jacob and Esau, Ajagbo was an outdoorsman, while Ajampati preferred the comforts of the royal court. As a result, Ajagbo, as a prince, was part of many military expeditions to keep invaders at bay, and grew up a warrior. He nurtured ideas on how best to deal with military aggression against his kingdom-state.

“One of the direct results of his ideas, when he became Alaafin, was the creation of the office and title of Aare Ona Kakanfo, meaning Field Marshal, or Generalissimo of the Alaafin’s armies. He then appointed one of his close friends, Kokoro Gangan from Iwoye as the first Kakanfo. He was described as a skilled tactician.”

The choice of Otunba Gani Adams

It was discovered that not a few people applied for the position against the belief that the office of the Yoruba warlord was anything enticing. But the leader of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) beat other aspirants and applicants to clinch the office.

According to Archbishop Ladigbolu, various applicants from different parts of the Yoruba race worldwide showed interest but there could not have been a better candidate than Gani Adams.

The retired cleric noted that Oba Lamidi Adeyemi made the right choice by pronouncing Adams as the new Aare, 20 years after the death of the last holder of the title, the late Chief MKO Abiola, who died on July 7, 1998.

He pointed out that the intelligence and wisdom of the forefathers gave the prerogative, right and power to the Alaafin of Oyo to appoint and choose an Aare Ona Kakanfo out of the many people who might be desirous of the position.

He said: “There were many people who wanted the position. People from different parts of Yoruba land applied for the position, mostly men from the high, low and middle-class of the society. But when  the Alaafin was ready, he made a choice which everyone agreed was a right choice.”

Alaafin proclaimed Gani Adams the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo-designate on October 15, last year. Many also believed that, despite his unknown background, Gani, who was seemingly nobody, developed himself and became what he is today.

Justifying his decision, the Alaafin who explained the qualities he considered before making the choice said: “Gani Adams is very courageous and he has the interest of Yoruba race at heart. Gani Adams was a very young man when some Yoruba leaders decided to establish the OPC. As a result of his courage, he was chosen as the leader of the group and he has held the position creditably well.

Gani Adams deserves the title of the Are Ona Kakanfo that I as the Alaafin conferred on him.”

    Seclusion and Investiture

The procedures and conventions instituted by Ajagbo and nurtured by succeeding Alaafins were probably responsible for the mystiques surrounding the office and title. At installation, the major rite that must be performed is the administering of 201 incisions on the Kakanfo-designate. The incision is called gbere in Yoruba. They are chiefly tiny cuts made with a razor, from the forehead backwards to the waist.

Each of the 201 incisions is rubbed with 201 different herbal preparations expected to take the courage and bravery of the Kakanfo to super-human levels. After the incisions, the Kakanfo is “crowned” with a specially-made headdress, that only him wears. It is  called the Ojijiko in Yoruba.

    Ceremonial Installation

After being held in seclusion for three days, the new Generalissimo was, at a well-attended event, presented with the insignia and apparatus of of fice in full public glare at the Durbar Stadium in the ancient town of Oyo.

Observers believe the event held up to its expectation as a celebration of Yoruba diverse cultural heritage. Yoruba from both far and near were in full attendance at the history-making event. Many traditional troupes, dancers, drummers were on hand with musical instruments and outfits to thrill the audience. Different masquerades, performers and varieties of entertainers were not in short supply.

Sealing the investiture process, 14 different calabashes, representing each of the past holders of the title, were arranged at the centre of the expansive field where the incumbent was led to appease and pray before stepping into their shoes.

The glamorous event got another surprise when the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and the new Aare Ona Kakanfo stormed the venue on a four-wheeled horse chariot at exactly 12.55 p.m.  Their arrival threw the crowd into ecstasy, as many left their seats to have a glimpse of the chariot.

Decked in white flowing agbada and a traditional white cap to match, Chief Adams sat in front while the Alaafin took the back seat of the chariot. The chariot was followed by a convoy of vehicles amid chanting of Iku Baba Yeye from the crowd who followed them.

The week-long programme, which commenced on Wednesday expectedly, was witnessed by a large crowd of enthusiast and lovers of culture with thick vehicular movement into the ancient town.

As early as 7:00 a.m., most of the major roads in the town had become difficult to access due to heavy traffic of guests trooping into town to witness the making and installation of the 15th Generalissimo of Yoruba land.

Security and safety operatives were also on hand in their good numbers. Men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Directorate of State Security (DSS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Nigeria Peace Corps, some in uniform and others in plain clothes, had taxing day controlling traffic and working to ensure peace within and around the event venue. There were scores of security operatives screening guests at the entrance of the venue of the event.

Some guests experienced exhaustion at the narrow entrance gate to the stadium as they struggled to gain entry, while others were stampeded, losing some of their valuables in the process.

As a mark of honour and respect, major shops, business areas and markets in the ancient town were shut, while residents trooped out in large numbers to witness the installation ceremony.

    Dignitaries advise the new Generalissimo

Some dignitaries spoke in their separate remarks while addressing reporters on the task before Adams.

Alao-Akala said Adams has been performing the role of Aare Ona Kakanfo before his installation as the 15th Aara Ona Kakanfo and that the Alaafin has made the right choice.

In his remarks, Mimiko noted that Adams has always displayed quintessential patriotism, which distinguished him from the pack.

Also, Senator Summonu congratulated the Alaafin on the occasion and his choice of Adams expressed optimism that the new Generalissimo would use his position to support Federal Government’s efforts on enthronement of national peace and unity.

The spokesperson of Afenifere Socio-Cultural Group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin said Adams deserved the choice as the 15th Kakanfo. He described him as a quintessential leader, who displayed a high-level commitment to the promotion and protection of Yoruba cultural heritage.

The challenges and task before Gani Adams

Just like many people had advised him before his installation, the newly installed 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo, vowed to use his new office to foster the unity and peace of the entire Yoruba race, even as he solicited the support of all Yoruba worldwide with particular request to the governors from all Yoruba states to see him as a partner in progress.

He spoke while giving his acceptance speech shortly after he was presented with the staff and insignia of office as the Generalissimo of Yoruba land.

Noting that the title bestowed on him is a big challenge, Adams promised to live up to the call by working with all traditional rulers and leaders to project the Yoruba culture to the world positively.  also added that the race is already losing many of its values and cultures to other foreign cultures.

Considering himself lucky not to have come at a time of many wars like his predecessors, Adams said the challenge will be more of a bridge builder.

  • Alaafin: Adams courage, commitment earned him Aare Ona Kakanfo title

Alaafin: Adams courage, commitment earned him Aare Ona Kakanfo title

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, has said the title of Aare Ona Kakanfo was bestowed on Gani Adams because of his commitment to the protection of the cultural and territorial integrity of the Yoruba.

The frontline monarch spoke during a thanksgiving service at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Oyo on his 47th anniversary on the throne.

He said out of 25 candidates who were shortlisted for the title, Adams was found to have paid dearly and earnestly for the interest of the Yoruba.

Oba Adeyemi said: “The benchmark of selection was not hung at the sentinel of political engagement or solidity, in terms of gold, wealth or fortune; neither was it on the number of properties acquired on global pedestal but on agrarian and blind engagement of those who have abused and are abusing; those who have infringed and are infringing on the territorial and cultural territory of the Yoruba.

“Whatever methods employed by him and his association, the fact still remains that there was a counter-balance check valve, which sent jitters down to the spines of the irrational irredentists who hitherto thought they could make mincemeat of Yoruba land.”

He added: “And for his bold steps at ensuring that Yoruba land was not desecrated or lorded over by blue collar miscreants’ ethnic irredentists, he paid dearly for it.”

Oba Adeyemi noted that Adams “has been poignantly consistent in fighting for the protection of the Yoruba”.

The monarch added: “He was, many times humiliated, disgraced, manacled and jailed. It is natural for you either to hate, love and dislike him. However, the truth must not only be told that he was there when the Yoruba needed a person who is bold, strong and ready to lay his life for the defence of the heritage.

“After he came first at the examination and scrutinisation by men and earthly beings, his appointment as the 15th Are Ona Kakanfo was also subjected for approval and subsequently sanctioned by the gods and all the elemental forces in the firmament.”

Oba Adeyemi also said: “We also ensured that the three religions being fervently practised by the Yoruba prayed and endorsed his appointment. Thus, we find it expedient to be here, not only to give and pray to God through Mother Mary, the Holy Virgin for my 47th years on the throne but also for successful installation ceremony of the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of the Yoruba.

“The role of an Aare Ona Kakanfo in peace and war periods is not a deal for the Lilly-livered or for a spineless fellow; it is the consignment of a man with a lion’s heart and an eagle spirit, which we have found in Aare Gani Adams.”
