JUST IN: Edo moves to release remanded AAU students

The Edo State Government has initiated steps to secure the release of bona fide students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) who were remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre following a protest against recurring kidnappings in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

The students were among 52 individuals arrested and subsequently remanded in connection with the unrest.

Governor Monday Okpebholo dispatched the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, to oversee the process and ensure the students’ release.

Speaking with journalists at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre, Dr Iyamu assured that genuine AAU students would regain their freedom once all required procedures were completed.

He stated that last week’s violent protest in Ekpoma was instigated by a group known as the Comrade Association, which he described as comprising former students who seize any opportunity to foment disorder.

He said, “There is a lot of misinformation going around, especially on social media. I wonder how a protest will occur without the authorisation of the Student Union Government. The school is not in sessions and the students were not involved.

“We have a group tagged the Comrade Association that co-opts students to carry out the dastardly act. There was no letter written to the security about any protest.

“These are ex-students of the university looking for an opportunity to latch onto any problem and cause mayhem. They went to the House of the traditional ruler, took Indomie and other things. That character does not depict students. His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has said that any bona fide students should be released and walk home free.”

President of the AAU SUG, Osadebamwen Ehizojie, commended the Governor for ensuring the release of the students.

He said AAU students did not start the protest, adding that it was hijacked by hoodlums.

AAU postpones resumption over rising abductions

The management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, has postponed resumption and commencement of academic activities.

Sources said the management took the decision due to incessant kidnappings in the area.

The source said the move was to prevent students from participating in protest against kidnapping.

Besides the commencement of academic activities that ws postponed, the institution also postponed the 140th Inaugural Lecture scheduled for Thursday, 15th January 2026, as well as all ongoing examinations.

Spokesman for the institution, Mike Aladenika, in a statement, said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Eunice Eboiserehimen Omonzejie, approved the postponement to enable the University complete ongoing renovation works on student structures and facilities.

Aladenika said the projects were at enhancing overall teaching and learning experience.

He said the institution remained committed to providing a conducive environment for academic excellence, saying, “this temporary adjustment will ultimately benefit our students.”

Aladenika asked any student(s) still in the school hostels to vacate with immediate effect to allow for effective ongoing renovation works

The statement added: “A new date for the lecture and the completion of the examinations will be communicated to all stakeholders in due course.

“The University appreciates the understanding and cooperation of students, parents, and guardians on this matter. We urge all students to adhere to the new resumption date and prepare for a productive academic session.

“Parents and guardians are kindly requested to ensure their children/wards are aware of and comply with the revised resumption schedule.”

AAU, ASUU differ on salary arrears

Management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have disagreed over payment of all arrears owed to the institution’s staff.

The spokesman of the institution, Otunba Mike Aladenika, said the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Olowo Samuel, never claimed to have cleared all staff arrears.

Aladenika was reacting to comments by AAU ASUU Chairman, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, that it was insensitive, untrue and misleading for the university administration to say it had cleared all backlogs of salaries of staff from the N500m monthly subvention.

Onogbosele said some staff were still owed up to 29 months and above, 13th month salary, staff promotion arrears, N70,000 and 25-35% minimum wage increase arrears.

But Aladenika said the VC only emphasised the administration’s commitment to the gradual liquidation of the arrears.

He stated that Professor Samuel highlighted prompt payment of salaries and pensions as a hallmark of his administration, and wondered where ASUU got their information from.

According to him, “It’s worth noting that when the current administration took over, ASUU members were owed over 35 months in arrears. However, the debt has since been reduced as those owed 35 months and above were paid 10 months’ salary arrears in the 1st tranch, while in the 2nd tranch, those owed 20 months and above were also paid 10months’ salary arrears, emblock.

“On the issue of the 13th-month salary, it’s essential to clarify that this has never been a right, but rather a subject of tripartite negotiations between workers, management, and the state government. There has been no prior agreement or understanding on this matter, and it has always been a point of negotiation for our unions.

“It’s worth noting that the university has never paid 13 months’ salary in a 12-month financial year. However, this doesn’t mean that the management is opposed to negotiations on the matter. Rather, we believe that it’s essential to approach such discussions constructively, rather than using it as a bargaining chip for blackmail.

“The management is open to negotiations, but we urge all parties to engage in good faith and avoid misrepresentations.”

He said construction work on the project would soon commence.

According to him, “Edo State Government will build a 500 hostel space accommodation for the medical school in AAU, Ekpoma. In the coming weeks, we will mobilise work to start. Have we not constituted the governing council for the school?”

AAU, Fujian Jiangxia universities to begin exchange programme

Edo State-owned university, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and the Fujian Jiangxia University, China, have entered into a partnership for institutional collaboration aimed at deepening the exchange of knowledge across education, culture, and technology.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, who received the delegation from Fujian Jiangxia University, China, led by its President, Mr. Ling Qzdan, expressed delight at the partnership.

Okpebholo noted that the meaningful partnerships with nations like China were critical for sustainable knowledge transfer and capacity development.

“We are delighted to welcome you to Benin City, one of the oldest cities in Africa and the world, rich in cultural heritage and history,” the governor stated.

Mr. Ling said the visit was to formalise cooperation as well as strengthen institutional ties in the domains of education, culture, technology, and scientific research.

He said both the Fujian Jiangxia University and the Ambrose Alli University share similar facilities and academic disciplines, which provide a strong foundation for long-term collaboration.

  • Why Edo govt-owned varsity, AAU, is in intense crisis, by ASUU Chairperson

Why Edo govt-owned varsity, AAU, is in intense crisis, by ASUU Chairperson

The Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State chapter, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, has disclosed that no fewer than 25 members of academic staff of AAU have lost their lives since he came on board on August 3, 2021, over the crisis in the university, caused by aberrations, impunities, oddities and misnomers.

He declared that the prevailing development in the Edo State government-owned university was strange, baffling and alien, in contrast to how best to administer and manage a modern and contemporary university.

ASUU chairperson of AAU noted that within the period of focus, the state university witnessed the eclipse of the universally-cherished university autonomy, administrative misnomer, highhandedness, pauperisation and victimisation of staff, erosion of pristine university ethos of due process, rule of law and academic freedom – all in the name of repositioning.

Onogbosele, who was accompanied by some members of his executive, and the Benin Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Prof. Monday Igbafen, who is a former chairman of the union at AAU, in a seven-page text during a news conference at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), urged the Visitor to AAU, Governor Godwin Obaseki, to quickly do the needful, to ensure peace.

ASUU chairperson of AAU, in his text, titled “Systemic Decimation of AAU, Ekpoma,” maintained that the university had been experiencing the worst form of maladministration, as evident in the absence of a governing council and substantive principal officers since 2021.

He said: “Ours is a university that is presently facing the darkest period of zero funding, staff victimisation, intimidation, imposition, and dispensation of hardship on staff.

, as evident in selective payment of salaries, outright denial of salaries to many staff up to twenty six months, deliberate non-remittance of deductions from staff salaries in favour of staff unions, and welfare/cooperative societies, delay in staff appraisal and promotion, bias in, and politicisation of staff disciplinary matters, and anti-workers policies in the university.

“To sustain the vices against the university and its workers, the Edo State government, in concert with its Special Intervention Team (SIT) in the university, has unleashed different forms of blackmail, propaganda and misinformation on the university.

“Currently, contrary to the so-called ‘repositioning agenda’ in the university, which the Godwin Obaseki-led administration kick-started since 2021, AAU is in comatose, with the consequences of workers facing hardship and leaving in droves, while the number of prospective students to the university/enrolment through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dropped from more than fourteen thousand in the previous years to barely three thousand in 2024.”

Onogbosele also accused the “de facto” SIT Chairman, Mr. Austin Osakue, of desperation, particularly beguiling Obaseki and members of the public, in order to remain in the university and continue to foist arbitrary administration on AAU.

He said: “AAU, Ekpoma is presently bleeding, and at its lowest and darkest period in its historical trajectory, as a result of a continuing systemic decimation of the university by the actions and inactions of Edo State government, in concert with its SIT in the university.

“The SIT has become the albatross of AAU, Ekpoma, and the Obaseki-led administration in Edo State has deliberately made it so. AAU, Ekpoma is the only known public university in Nigeria that is been managed since May 2021 by a body called SIT, in total deviation from the universally-accepted norms, laws and best global practice.

“On March 16, 2023, at a stakeholders’ meeting on how to resolve the crisis rocking AAU, Governor Obaseki publicly gave ninety days ultimatum to the SIT to wind up its activities, to pave way for the constitution of a governing council, after serious public outcry against the activities of SIT in the university. Till date, the governor’s pronouncement has been observed in total breach, as SIT continues its reign of impunities in AAU.

“Some members of the SIT are by educational qualification not qualified to teach in a university, let alone administer a university. The highest academic qualification of one of them, Mr. Austin Osakue, is NCE.

“As a union, we have consistently condemned the charade called SIT and all it represents. In order to cow staff unions and the entire university into complete submission to its whims and caprices, the SIT resorted to the use of hunger as a weapon against union leaders and many other staff of the university, through deliberate denial of salaries and promotion, pay-cut, witch-hunt and intimidation.

“Other unfriendly/pernicious workers’ policies include the fraudulent implementation of Edo Health Insurance Scheme (EDOHIS), Contributory Pension Scheme (CPC) and payment of access fees to enter our place of work in the university.

“For no just cause, many academic staff have been denied payment of salaries for twenty six months, since January 2022. The affected staff in the university have been working in pains without pay. They were not tried for, or found wanting in violation of the university’s law or rules and regulations to warrant denial of their salaries. Slave trade was abolished hundreds of years ago, but the SIT and AAU’s administration have re-packaged slavery and foisted it on workers of the university. It is slavery to make a human being work without pay.”

AAU’s chairperson of ASUU also declared that enough was enough of the inhuman situation in the university, which he said members of the union would no longer tolerate.

He reiterated that the universal practice for government-owned universities was that the government would set aside funds for the running of the higher institutions, with funds disbursed periodically to the government-owned universities, but Obaseki decided to abolish the release of subvention to AAU, after the initial drastic reduction of the university’s monthly subvention from N270 million to N41.3 million.

Onogbosele pointed out that since the inception of Obaseki’s policy of self-funding in AAU, Ekpoma, the university had been in serious financial crisis, while declaring that the continuing assault on the autonomy of AAU by Edo state government/SIT was of grave concern to ASUU.

He said AAU was being run on directives from Government House, Benin, through the SIT, resulting in the university’s statutory organs, including the Senate, functionally non-existent, as all its functions had either been usurped or taken over by the SIT, which had taken over academic matters in the university, to the extent that SIT was now examining courses and fixing scores for continuous assessment in the university, by arbitrarily raising it from 30 to 50 marks, in a desperate bid to compel students to pay fees.

ASUU’s chairperson in AAU stated that the SIT had completely taken over the administration of the university, while declaring that with SIT, the AAU’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sonnie Adagbonyin, was not better than a secondary school prefect, while operating at the mercy of the SIT, to the extent that he could not give order for the electricity generator in the university’s administrative complex to be switched on.

Osakue and the Spokesman of AAU, Otunba Mike Aladenika, were contacted for their reactions, but they declined to respond.

‘We will continue to protest outrageous fees’

The President of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma students’ union, Ibrahim Abdulfatai, said yesterday that the protesting students did not prevent the late Prof. Moses Aliemen’s honour.

In a statement signed and issued to The Nation, Abdulfatai said: “We want to emphasise that the protesting students have never harboured any intention to damage the university property. We all share ownership of this institution. Our protest serves to voice our demands.

“The protest will continue tomorrow (today) at the university main gate. Any AAU worker present at the protest site will be required to contribute an amount equivalent to the tuition fees of at least 10 students, since the management has insisted that the university must run amid outrageous fees.”

  • PDP, AAU disagree over funding status

The Peoples Democratic Party and management of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, have disagreed over funding of the institution.

State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, had accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of deliberately abandoning the AAU through poor funding while providing adequate funding for the Edo University, Iyamho

Speaking in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area, Orbih said it was wrong for the APC government to spend N18.5bn in the new Edo University without allocating same amount for AAU.

He said, “After spending N18.5bn on Iyamho University, an average Edo man cannot send his children to that school.

“Iyamho University was by the rich, for the rich and for children of the rich. But the AAU has been neglected by the APC in the last nine years.

“There is a conscious policy to deny the poor access to quality education. Without proper funding of AAU, you are denying people access to education. This government has starved the AAU of fund.

“They have not given half of the money given to Iyamho University to AAU. Government has a responsibility to provide quality education for everybody.”

However, spokesman for AAU, Mr Edward Aihevba, said the university and the state government had a “very cordial” relationship.

He said the government had been apt in the sending of its monthly subvention to the school adding the institution is waiting for Obaseki to set up its Governing Council.

He said lots of infrastructural projects have been executed and are being executed.

“More than 25 others projects have been done in the past one year. The Federal Government TETFUND and others are properly utilized. The Governor has a lot of plans for the institution. Things are not as bad as the PDP are painting it. We are providing the highest quality education.

“Academic activities have stepped up. The tempo of academic activities is on. There is no such thing as academic decay. We are the only university running electronic voting. People should have the right information. It is not in the interest of everybody to use the university to pay politics. We are the best in law school. In French village we are the best, we are winning prizes on all fronts. In architecture, we are the best. On all fronts, we are doing very well,” he said.
