The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has urged new students to make positive impact in society through knowledge and skills.

Ige spoke  at the AAUA matriculation ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session held at the school’s Olusegun Obasanjo Multi-Purpose Hall.

He emphasised  that through discipline, hard work, and courage, students can achieve quality education, maximising limitless opportunities around them.

“As you are formally admitted into this university today, seize the opportunity offered by this institution and make positive impact in society as you set your eyes and mind on receiving the knowledge and skills that will get you a place in a world full of limitless opportunities.

“I urge you to be builders of this academic edifice built on the blocks of discipline, hard work, diligence, determination, and courage,” he said.

The VC encouraged the fresh students to uphold academic diligence and  desist from examination misconduct, indecent dressing, cult activities, rape, and other social vice.

“I appeal to our fresh students to join the train of novelty on which the university is boarded. This university has zero tolerance for all forms of social vice, including but not limited to examination misconduct, indecent dressing, cult activities, rape, and robbery, as any student caught engaging in any of these, will be  expelled,” he said.

The VC, however, congratulated the 6,670 candidates admitted out of 12,500 candidates who applied for admission, urging them to complete their registration.

  • AAUA VC tasks matriculating students on good conduct, positive impact

New students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, have been urged to take advantage of their admission to become leaders, problem solvers, innovators and entrepreneurs that will positively impact their society.

The Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, stated this at the Matriculation Ceremony for the 5, 305 new students admitted for the 2017/2018 session on Thursday.

Prof. Ajibefun told the matriculating students to consider themselves lucky to be among the 18.10 percent chosen from the over 29, 307 candidates who picked AAUA as first choice, pointing out that only a negligible percentage of students seeking admission to universities in the country get admitted at the end of every year.

He said: “A university is a destination for knowledge seekers, potential leaders, thinkers, problem solvers, innovators and entrepreneurs who are intent on gaining knowledge with a view to turning their societies around, impacting humanity and making the world a better place.

“A matriculation ceremony is, therefore, an occasion for making these potential leaders to swear to an Oath and to formally admit them into this enviable class. Membership of this class is for a privileged few who the society looks up to for impact, direction and leadership. This is because the university, like leadership, is composed of a few who give direction for the teeming population to follow.

“It is not therefore a surprise that, every year, the number of candidates given university admission worldwide is small in comparison to admission seekers. Of the over 20, 000 candidates  that applied to Adekunle Ajasin University this year for instance, only 5, 305, representing about 18.10 per cent were admitted.

“Belonging to this privileged few is an opportunity that you should guard jealously by concentrating on your studies and avoiding acts that can rob you of your dream.”

The Vice Chancellor assured the new students of the quality and track records of the Institution. He listed the distinguishing factors of the University to include its merit-driven admission policy, quality and award-winning staff, relevant infrastructures and a conducive environment that drives research and learning.

He also itemised the feats and milestones achieved by the university’s products in national and international exams and competitions in various walks of life, including the Nigerian Law School, the Commonwealth and the Olympic Games.

  • ASUU strike’ll end soon, says AAUA VC

The Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, (AAUA) Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, has assured that the on-going industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the institution will soon end.

Ajibefun gave the assurance while speaking with reporters in his office at the weekend.

The VC said, “Our academic calendar has been very smooth until recently when the university began to face some challenges in terms of payment of salaries, which is not unconnected with the economic recession in the country.

“Very soon, all the issues will be resolved. We are in a progressive talk with the leadership of ASUU. Efforts are in the top gear to ensure that ASUU members go back to class. Very soon, our students will be asked to return to campus.”

Reacting to speculations that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at AAUA has been proscribed, following a protest by some members of the association, which led to the disengagement of its executives in 2012, Ajibefun said the union was never banned in the university.

“There is no record whatsoever that says SSANU has been banned. The Management is not against its resuscitation. Everybody has the right to freedom of association and such a right has not been taken away from SSANU,” he said.

  • AAUA VC seeks to improve ranking

The Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, has expressed readiness to enhance the status of the university to improve its ranking.

Ajibefun who clocked one year in office yesterday, said he would seek greater partnership with foreign institutions.

The Vice Chancellor said: “We will enhance the status of the university to ensure that it gets better ranking. We are going to explore new areas, including partnering with more foreign universities, developing our academic programmes.

“We are going to enhance the University’s Centre for Research and Bio-Computing to enable it to deliver better outputs. We are going to improve on our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) as the university is presently working on new ways of doing this. We will sustain the staff and student discipline. Our academic calendar will now run from September to July.”

Ajibefun described his first year in office as fruitful despite financial challenges.

“The past one year has been good. I came with the mind-set to build on my predecessor’s achievements. Although finance is a serious challenge at all levels of governance, God has been so helpful and faithful. Having been here for the past one year, the University has experienced stability, peace and progress even when other institutions around are struggling to achieve same.

“Our University has been quite peaceful; the students are disciplined and responsible. Staff members are committed and are regularly paid.”

    RUGIPO, Owo honour AAUA VC

As Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun settles down to his new role as the Vice Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), he has good wishes from his former school, the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, RUGIPO, where he served as rector, urging him on.

The polytechnic and the Owo Kingdom gave him a befitting send-off for the role he played in the development of the institution and the town recently.

The elaborate programme started with the conferment of double chieftaincy titles on him by the Olowo of Owo, Oba David Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi III.  The conferment was said to be unprecedented in the history of the ancient Yoruba town.

The Monarch credited Ajibefun for turning around the fortune and image of the Polytechnic.

At RUGIPO campus, dignitaries from within and outside Ondo State, including his predecessor at AAUA, Prof. Femi Mimiko, the Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Bisi Daramola, graced the occasion.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr Laoye Adegoke, praised the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for having the courage to appoint Prof. Ajibefun as Rector five years ago.

Adegoke, who is the immediate past Chairman of the RUGIPO Governing Council also congratulated the Ajibefun for justifying the confidence reposed in him by turning the polytechnic around.

Giving an account of Ajibefun’s achievements, the Acting Rector of the institution, Mr I.B. Ologunagba, an engineer, said in a speech, entitled, Celebrating a Man of Courage: “When Prof.  Ajibefun assumed duty as Rector in November 2010, he inherited a polytechnic which had practically been brought to its knees by a protracted crisis… and a polytechnic whose academic image was heavily battered.

“By the time he was leaving in January 2015, he handed over a polytechnic with an academic image that was already looming larger-than-life; a polytechnic that has been elevated to the position of best state polytechnic in Nigeria.”

The Acting Rector, who described Ajibefun as a symbol of excellence who radiates integrity, discipline and fair play, promised to improve on his legacy.

Responding, Ajibefun thanked the polytechnic community for the honour done on him and attributed all the feats recorded under his administration to the grace of God.

He appreciated the entire Owo Kingdom, particularly the Olowo, for the support he enjoyed as rector.

Ajibefun noted that the entrenchment of academic ethics and culture in the polytechnic was made possible by the cooperation of all workers, students and the Owo community.

He charged the workers and students to support the present Management in order to sustain the peace and academic stability in the Institution.

Ajibefun left with party with gifts from the Council, and various departments and units of the institution.
