About nine years after it was abandoned, the Federal Government has said the completion of the Middle Ogun Irrigation Project will generate substantial employment opportunities with approximately 8,000 women and youth to benefit from direct jobs and millions more potentially created indirectly.
Additionally, the government said, aside job creations, the project will enhance the economy of the country by ensuring maximum food production to serve Nigerians.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsve spoke during an on- the-spot assessment of facilities at the project site.
He reaffirmed the FG’s commitment to the completion of the irrigation project, located at Iseyin local government area of Oyo state to enhance food production in the country.
President Tinubu led Federal Government is revisiting the project about nine years after it was abandoned.
The project, which was awarded in 1990, aims to provide irrigation to approximately 12,000 hectares of farmlands, with its water sourced from the Ikere-Gorge Dam.

The project was designed in three phases, each covering 4,000 hectares. However, progress has been hindered by financial constraints, leading to a standstill since 2015.
The Minister said the project was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda
adding that when revitalized, will boost food production, create jobs, and strengthen the nation’s economy.
In a significant shift from the initial plans, the Minister announced a change from diesel-powered irrigation systems to a combination of solar energy and the national grid.
This transition, he said, is both a response to economic realities and an adaptation to the pressing challenges of climate change.
“We have procured the equipment for installation to the national grid, and as of now, we are almost at 95 percent completion for the grid connection, while the solarization is nearing 80 percent completion,” Professor Utsve stated.
He emphasised the aim is to finalise the remaining procurement soon to enhance the project’s efficiency and potential.
“The completion of the Middle Ogun Irrigation Project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities. Approximately 8,000 women and youth will benefit from direct jobs, with millions more potentially created indirectly.
“By doing this, we can create jobs and enhance the economy of this country, ensuring maximum food production to serve Nigerians,” the Minister added.
When asked about the timeline for completion, Professor Utsve assured that by the end of this year, the installation of solar panels will be complete, followed by the rehabilitation of irrigation facilities.
He projected that within two to three years, all 12,000 hectares of land envisioned for agricultural purposes would be fully operational.
