  • Gunmen abduct Agip workers in Bayelsa

    Gunmen have kidnapped two Nigerian Agip Oil Company’s (NAOC’s) workers.

    They also abducted two persons.

    The incident occurred along the creeks of Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State.

    The Nation learnt the victims were in the area last weekend to carry out a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV), usually done by stakeholders after an oil spill, when the gunmen kidnapped them.

    The hoodlums reportedly accosted the officials, seized four of them and took them to an unknown place.

    A source, who spoke in confidence, said the victims included an employee of the Ministry of Environment and an official of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

    He said the kidnappers had contacted the Agip management, demanding ransom.

    The source said following the development, the company sent a letter to the director, Petroleum and Pollution Department, Ministry of Environment.

    NAOC and Ministry of Environment could not be reached last night for comments.

    It was gathered soldiers had been deployed in the area to rescue the victims.

    Spokesman for the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe (ODS), Maj. Ibrahim Abdullahi, said he was not aware of the abduction.

  • Herdsmen abduct, kill pastor in Edo

    Suspected herdsmen have killed a Pastor of the Church of God Mission in Benin City, pastor Pius Eromosele.

    Eromosele was killed at his farm at Odighi in Ovia North East local government area after they allegedly demanded a ransom of N4m.

    Another killed farmer, whose identity could not be ascertained, was buried inside the bush because he was already decomposed.

    The unidentified farmer was found by a search party comprising of hunters and local vigilante who went into the bush to look for Pastor Eromosele.

    Eldest son of late Eromosele, Dr. Richard Eromosele, said his father was abducted on Thursday March 29 and found already decomposing in the bush on April 3rd.

    Dr. Richard said he almost passed out when he saw the way his father was brutally murdered.

    Richard told newsmen that the killers cut through his father’s skull after they shot him at close range.

    He stated that he reported the incident to the police which referred him to the anti-kidnapping unit but nothing was done to rescue his father.

    Richard said two of his father’s workers, Kingsley and Akpan, who managed to escape from the herdsmen, narrated what happened before his father was killed.

    He said: “Last Thursday, my mother called that he had been calling my father and that he was not picking.

    “She later called that my father later picked and told her that he has been kidnapped by herdsmen at his farm.

    “The herdsmen did not use their phones. They were using my father’s phone and a phone of one of his workers.

    “They demanded for N4m but we begged them that it was a holiday and could not raise such money.

    “I went to the police and they told me that I should call them whenever the herdsmen called for ransom payment. I did that but there was no response from the police.

    “The two workers that escaped told us that the herdsmen told my father that he was one of those killing their cows.

    “It was on Tuesday after the police failed to find my father that I begged hunters and vigilante to help me.

    “It was during the search that we found my father. His skull was cut out with a cutlass while his hands were also cut.

    “We want security agencies to protect farmers in Odighi. My father has farmed in that place for many years.

    “How could I go into farming when my father was killed like a pig?”

    Edo Police Commissioner, Babatunde Kokumo, could not be reached for comment.

  • Suspected kidnappers abduct MFM pastor’s daughter

    A 13-year-old secondary school pupil in Akure, Ondo State capital, Belove Olatunde, has been abducted by suspected kidnappers.

    Belove, said to be a daughter of the Regional Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries (MFM), in Akure, was reportedly kidnapped after leaving school last Monday.

    The Nation learnt that the girl lived with her mother in Ologede, Akure.

    It was gathered that detectives have begun investigation into the incident to rescue the girl.

    The Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, urged residents to ensure that the girl is found.

    The monarch, who decried the incident, implored security agents to rescue the girl.

    The victim’s mother, Mrs. Christiana Olatunde, said her daughter, who attended Ileriayo Private School, Akure left home last Monday but had not returned.

    Olatunde, a pastor in the church, said the police and other security agents were aware of the kidnap.

    She said: Our house is not too far from the school. The pupils close at 4pm. We went to the school and it was confirmed that she attended school that day.

    ‘’She was said to have collected a vest distributed for the inter-house sports.”

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph, who confirmed the abduction, said the police have begun investigation.

    He said: “Our operatives will rescue her.”

  • Gunmen abduct two council workers in Ondo again

    Two workers of Akoko South East local government in Ondo state were yesterday  seized by gunmen.

    Their abduction came as an abducted lawyer Wale Ilenusi regained his freedom.

    The LG workers on their way to work in Isua from Ikare when  theri abductors swooped on them between Ise and Isua .

    The release of the lawyer was sequel to the intervention of the  Oloba of Oba Akoko,Oba Nurudeen Adegoroye, the  community and the  police .

    Efforts to speak to the freed lawyer failed as he was said to have gone for medical treatment in an undisclosed private hospital while his father,a retired soldier, Mr Olu Ilenusi was full of praises to God .

    Hon Rafiu Eniayewu, chairman, Akoko North East local government called for more presence of security personnel in the area which shares boundaries with Ekiti Edo and Kogi states.

    The National Organizing Secretary, Ansar ud Deen society of Nigeria(AUD),Alhaji Ibrahim Kilani pleaded for increased vigilance and security.

    Gunmen abduct APC stalwart in Bayelsa

    Gunmen have kidnapped a stalwart of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Mr. Robert Desmond.

    The victim, a supporter of ex-Governor Timipre Sylva in Brass Local Government, is said to be the leader of an APC campaign group, called the New Face.

    He was reportedly taken to an unknown place last Saturday after a social gathering at Nembe Local Government.

    The Nation learnt that the incident caused confusion, as APC members expressed fears over the life of the victim.

    Police spokesman Asinim Butswat confirmed the abduction.

    He said: “We are investigating the incident.”

    The Caretaker Chairman of Brass Local Government, Mr. Victor Isaiah, condemned the kidnap.

    He implored security agencies to ensure the release of the victim.

    Driver in court over abduction of neighbour’s wife

    A 36-year-old man, Emmanuel Peter, has appeared before a Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly abducting his neighbour’s wife, Felicia Akpeku.

    The defendant, a driver, is facing a charge of abduction, which contravened the provisions of Section 27 of the Penal Code.

    Peter denied committing the offence, while the judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, admitted him to bail in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until Feb.9.

    The prosecutor, Mr Mahmud Ismail ’la, had earlier told the court that one Akpeku Godwin, who resides in Area A, Nyanyan, Abuja,  reported the matter  at  Nyanyan Police Station on Jan. 12.

    According to Ismail’la, “in the early hours of that day, the complainant had a misunderstanding with his wife and she moved out of their home into the apartment of the defendant who was their neighbour.’’

    The prosecutor alleged that the defendant accommodated the complainant’s wife till the following day and even gave her some money to travel out of town to an unknown location.

    He stated that the defendant accommodated and aided the escape of the complainant’s wife without his consent.

  • Gunmen abduct groom, best man in Ondo

    Suspected gunmen have reportedly abducted a groom, Moses Yakubu, his bride, best man and two other friends at Akunnu in Akoko Northeast Local Government Area of Ondo State few hours to their engagement.

    It was learnt that the couple and three others were returning from Okene in Kogi State, to Akure, the state capital, for their engagement ceremony scheduled for yesterday when their vehicle was seized at gun point at Akunnu.

    The father of the bride, Ahmed Amodu, who confirmed the incident, said the bride and her younger sister were later set free by the suspected kidnappers.

    The hoodlums reportedly held the groom and the other two male and female friends hostage.

    It was learnt that the engagement was scheduled to hold yesterday afternoon at Aule Quarters on Agagu Road in Akure.

    The engagement venue was said to be in pensive mood as guests and the two families called for the assistance of security agents to rescue the bride, the groom and others held in captivity.

    The bride was said to have been in distress since the incident happened.

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said policemen had been deployed in the area to comb the forest and rescue the victims.

    Joseph said the command would end incessant kidnapping in Akoko, especially with its Kogi and Edo states’ neighbouring towns and villages.

    According to him, the Police Commissioner Gbenga Adeyanju was meeting top officers of the command on strategies to tackle kidnappingsin Akoko area.

    Penultimate Sunday, four Akure-bound passengers from Ikare-Akoko were kidnapped on the Owo-Oba-Ikare-Akunnu Road, while a Pastor, who resisted being abducted by the gunmen, was killed on the spot.

    Gunmen have adducted a former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the immediate past governor of Benue State Gabriel Suswam, John Manger, a Superintendent of Police.
    Manger is serving at the Police Headquarters in Abuja and was said to be on his way to Benue before gunmen waylaid him.
    A family source who confirmed the incident to The Nation but pleaded anonymity said he was abducted along Abuja – Keffi road.
    There was no further information on weather his adductors have contacted the family.
    Manger worked with Suswam for eight years.
    When the news of his abduction filtered into Markudi, many who know him expressed concern over his safety.

    Gunmen kidnap Abia Poly medical director 

    Unknown gunmen have reportedly kidnapped the Medical Director (MD) of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, identified as Dr. Eze Nwokocha at the commercial nerve of the state.

    The incident, Nation gathered took place on Sunday evening at about 7pm around Allwell Crescent near Aba Fire Service.

    Though information on his kidnap were sketchy, sources said that the medical doctor was going back from a village meeting in the city when the hoodlums believed to be trailing him struck and whisked away to an unknown destination.

    Family members were yet to be reached as at the time of filing this report, but it was however gathered that efforts were being intensified by Police and other security agencies to ensure that Nwokocha, an indigene of Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area was rescued unharmed and without any payment of ransom.

    In another development, a crack team of police detectives from Ogbor Hill Police Division, Aba are currently investigating a reported case of homicide which was committed in Aba based lawyer’s apartment.

    Unconfirmed reports have it that the child of the lawyer said to be between six to eight years old erroneously killed a female house help in their house with his father’s pistol.

    The lawyer’s child was said to have picked the father’s gun from his bedroom thinking that it was a toy gun not knowing that the gun was loaded.

    According to a source who pleaded anonymity, “the child pointed the gun at the maid and playfully said, ‘I will kill you’ and on pulling the trigger, the gun went off and shot at the house help.”

    The matter was said to have been transferred to the state CID for further investigation on the matter.

    But when contacted on his mobile phone, the state PPRO (Police Public Relations Officer), ASP Ogbonnaya Nta said that the kidnap matter was yet to be reported at the police station even as he confirmed the case of homicide even though he said that the report available to him has it that the made committed suicide.

  • Gunmen abduct Rep’s sister in Bayelsa

    Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped Mrs. Seighe Dike, the younger sister to Mr. Henry Ofongo, the member representing Bayelsa State’s Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

    It was gathered that the bandits stormed her Igbomotoru community in Southern Ijaw at about 11pm and whisked her away to an unknown place.

    The gunmen, who were said to have operated on speedboats, broke into her house and met and her husband.

    The kidnappers reportedly gave the victim and her husband the beating of their lives before forcing her to the waterside where they pushed her into their speedboat and zoomed off.

    Sources in the community said the gunmen shot sporadically into the air to scare the villagers before running away with their victim.

    Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bayelsa State command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, said the police arrested three persons in connection with the incident.

    Butswat said police were on the trail of other fleeing suspects and assured that they would be captured.
