  • Schoolgirls relive abduction ordeal

One of the students, who was in the school during the abduction, Hafsat Lawal, recounted how she narrowly escaped the abduction.

She said: “I was around when the students were kidnapped. I just came out of the bathroom when I heard gunshots. Initially, I thought it was an electricity transformer that exploded.

“Nevertheless, I started running and I saw my sister too running. When I asked her why she was running, she said I should shut up and let’s run for our lives. So, I followed her and we ran towards the main gate.

“We asked the gateman to open the gate for us. But he refused and told us that it was not safe outside. So we jumped over the fence and started running. We then saw some men in military uniform covering their heads with scarf. They asked us to come so that they would  rescue us.

“But when we came close to them, we discovered that they were not real military men. Some of them were wearing slippers. So we changed direction and one of them started following us.

“We jumped the school fence and came inside the school premises again. We then started running towards the staff quarters. The guy who was following us started shouting that we should stop or he would shoot us.

“I disobeyed him and kept running. He then started shooting sporadically in the air. I am very sad that my sisters were kidnapped. In fact, I became sick because of the trauma of the incident.”

Asked if she was ready to continue her education, she said: “I want to further my education, but not in this school.”

Another student, Talatu Abubakar, said: “I feel very bad that they kidnapped my sisters. At first, I thought they ran into the bush the way we did. But after the incident, we could not find them.

“There is nothing that will make me come back to this school because of what I saw. But, if the government can provide enough security in the school, I may come back.”.

  • ‘Govt to punish negligent officials in Dapchi schoolgirls’ abduction’

President Mohammadu Buhari yesterday assured parents of the abducted girls that he won’t rest until the last girl is freed from captivity. He also promised to punish “any agency”, person or group found to have been negligent or culpable in the girls’ abduction.

The President spoke in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, at a meeting with stakeholders to commiserate with them over the abduction of the 110 girls from GGSTC, Dapchi.

He reiterated his commitment to negotiations with the terrorists to release all the girls whether they are from Dapchi or Chibok.

The presidential jet landed at the Maiduguri International Airport at about 11.01 am.

The President was received by Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Abayomi Olonishakin, National Security Adviser (NSA) Babagana Monguno and the Service Chiefs.

Others were the ministers of Education; Youth and Sports, Interior, and Information and Culture, Mr Adamu Adamu, Solomon Dalung, Abdulrahman Dambazau and Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

The President, accompanied by top government functionaries, boarded a chopper to Damaturu.

He said at the meeting: “There will be no rest until the last girl, whether from Chibok or Dapchi, is released. The girls and all our students must enjoy unhindered freedom and pursue their legitimate aspirations. The Dapchi and Chibok students are our girls and must enjoy our protection. They must live to achieve their individual ambition to be great women of tomorrow. It is our duty to protect them and we are determined to restore peace to all parts of the country from the west to the east, north to the south.”

The President, who described the abduction as “careless”, stressed:  ”It is my hope that any agency, person or group  found to have been negligent or culpable in the abduction of the girls will be punished according to the law”.

President Buhari noted the renewed commitment of the Federal Government to exterminate terror and restore peace in all parts of the country, saying his administration had equipped the armed forces enough. “The outcomes have been good,” he added.

He said: “Since the inception of this administration, we have remained resolute in our fight against terrorism and Boko Haram insurgents.  Nigerians will readily recall that prior to our coming in 2015, the situation was chaotic, with violent terrorist attacks being the order of the day.

“Terrorists had made life very unbearable for the people in Yobe, Kano, Kaduna, Borno, Niger, and even the FCT, Abuja.  Our mosques and churches witnessed daily suicide bomb attacks.  Parts of Adamawa and Borno states were helplessly ceded to the terrorists.

“But today, we have so far shown clear determination in tackling terrorism, which is a world -wide phenomenon. We have not only degraded the power and dominance of the criminal elements, our security forces have patriotically exhibited an uncommon zeal in executing their assignment.”

“We explored various strategies including regional and international collaborations, to exterminate terror.  We have re-equipped our armed forces, security and intelligence Services.  They are empowered with improved welfare and better equipment.  The outcomes have been good.  Our achievement in maintaining security is such that the international community and even our critics commend our modest efforts in this regard,” the President  said.

President Buhari said he had demanded daily briefing from the security agencies on the success and challenges of the rescue team, adding that with the recent release of University of Maiduguri lecturers and others, there was no doubt that the Dapchi girls would be released.

He added: “You may recall that recently, our negotiation efforts led to the release of abducted University of Maiduguri lecturers, some women police personnel, students and even an NYSC member.  We, therefore, have no doubt that the Dapchi girls will be rescued or released. I can reassure parents, Nigerians and the International Community that we will do all that is within our power to make sure that the girls are brought back safely to their families.

“I have ordered a 24-hour brief to me by security agencies on their successes or challenges.  While expecting the report of the committee set up to investigate the abduction for implementation, I have asked that appropriate Federal Government authorities be in constant touch with the Yobe State Government and other neighbouring states to ensure a common strategy and line of action.”

He said his administration’s commitment to the rescue of the Dapchi girls “is a clear departure from the insensitivity of the past administration which looked the other way while the Chibok girls were taken away in 2014 and held in captivity for over three years”.

“Due to our commitment, over 100 Chibok girls have been rescued and reunited with their families, sent back to school and empowered with requisite skills,” Buhari said.

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam praised the efforts of the Federal Government so far in trying to rescue the girls, saying he was pleased with the swift deployment of troops to Dapchi and the realignment of security check points at schools to respond to any threat.

He called for intelligence gathering and better synergy among security operatives to rout out the remnants of Boko Haram insurgents.

The meeting was attended by stakeholders, including traditional rulers. No parent or any other person spoke at the parley, except the Emir of Fika who welcomed the President in his capacity as the Chairman Yobe State Council of Chiefs.

  • Boko Haram and the Dapchi school girls’ abduction

It is becoming clearer by the day that there is no end in sight in to the nefarious activities of the Boko Haram with the abduction of one hundred and ten girls of Dapchi Government Girls Science Technical College, Yobe State, recently.

During the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, nearly three hundred girls of Chibok Government Girls Secondary School were abducted and it took almost three years to negotiate with the Boko Haram insurgents to release about one hundred of the girls with the additional that were either rescued or ran away from the insurgents.

Not yet done, the Boko Haram insurgents late last year abducted some lecturers of the University of Maiduguri who were on oil exploration and some police officers’ wives.

They were released after the government entered into negotiation with the Boko Haram insurgents, and like Oliver Twist after they were released another set of girls were abducted.

It is so sad that the insurgents still have the guts to show that they are unbeatable and can abduct more school girls. In fact, it seems that abduction of school girls by the Boko Haram insurgents has become a source of getting financial reward through negotiation. Even the government is not helping matters seeing how porous the school was and less than a kilometre to the town’s police outpost.

Lessons ought to have been learnt with the Buni Yadi killings by the insurgents in the same Yobe State, yet the government failed by not putting proactive measures in place.

The army cannot be everywhere combing the whole country. Therefore, it is a collective responsibility for the people to share intelligence report.

It is imperative for the army to go all out to crush the Boko Haram insurgents so that it would come to end. The issue is beyond politics.

It is important for the government to give good listening ears to what Ahmed Salkida says because he knows the mindset of the insurgents.

What is happening in the theatre of war between the Nigerian state and Boko Haram is one step forward two steps backward as the claims that they were completely defeated is false because the group is waxing stronger by the day.

The war against the rag tag Boko Haram by the Nigeria military speak volume of so many things in spite of claims by the military that they have finished with the insurgents and less than a month, the insurgents struck in Dapchi.

The war with the insurgents is getting to nine years now and we are still grappling with it. What is needed is a total war in full gear and force and nothing more than that.

The army should not leave any stone unturned in the fight. The method of abduction is a strategy by the elements of Boko Haram to get finance to continue executing their nefarious activities.

We have a long way to go if by now, our intelligence cannot get where the insurgents are, and also cannot detect the attack on the girls of Dapchi. If need be, let us invite other super powers to assist in defeating Boko Haram completely as the fight is getting messy.

  • CAN: abduction a national disgrace

    CAN: abduction a national disgrace

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed dismay on the security lapses in Nigeria, which it said led to the abduction of 110 Dapchi schoolgirls, stating that the incident in Dapchi has exposed the dark sides of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The CAN condemned the abduction of the schoolgirls by Boko Haram terrorists, describing it a national disgrace with the international attention it has rapidly generated.

In a statement issued on the abduction of Dapchi schoolgirls and signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the Special Assistant to the CAN President, His Eminence, Rev Dr Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, yesterday, the CAN said it was consternated and disappointed that despite repeated claims of victory by the Federal Government over Boko Haram, the insurgents have continued to muster strength with effrontery to dare the same government in different ways, including the latest Dapchi  incident.

It said the Dapchi incident has put Nigeria in deeper mourning about the unsecured future of Nigerian school children, most especially the females, given the failure of the government to ensure the rescue of all the Chibok girls who had earlier been kidnapped.

The CAN added that the abduction of Dapchi schoolgirls by Boko Haram almost unchallenged has offered the Federal Government a window of opportunity to look inward and to probing the incident to unravel the myth and invincibility around the Boko Haram terrorists.

It also called on the Federal government to interrogate the entire security apparatus in Nigeria with intent to detect moles and possible collaborators among the officers who, it stressed, must face severe sanctions if found wanting.

The CAN said: “We found it incongruous and reprehensible that there is no unanimity of purpose among security agencies in Nigeria, given the discordant tunes by the agencies. This has not been auguring well for the battle to contain terrorism in the country.

“We urge President Buhari to rise to the occasion as a leader and ensure harmony and enhanced professionalism among security agencies as a way of positioning them for the task of wrestling insurgency to standstill in Nigeria”

The CAN also called on the government to immediately deploy security operatives to other girls’ schools in the north eastern part of Nigeria in view of the Dapchi incident, wondering why the government, in the first instance, failed to take a cue from the abduction of Chibok Girls, almost three years ago by protecting the remaining girls more glaring. ”

Dapchi: Muslim groups condemn abduction of girls

    •Seek investigation into troops’ withdrawal

Prominent Islamic organisations – The Muslim Congress (TMC) and Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) yesterday condemned the abduction of 110 girls of Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State last Monday.

In a separate statement, the groups described the incident as unfortunate.

MURIC Director Prof Ishaq Akintola said the attack has exposed Boko Haram terrorists as a despicable bunch of cowards who turn their guns on unarmed innocent girls and the most vulnerable members of society.

Akintola said: “Once again, Boko Haram terrorists have proved that they have nothing in common with Nigerian Muslims. The abduction of Dapchi school girls is a flagrant violation of Islamic rules of engagement which forbid attacks on women, children and old people during hostilities. Islamic rules concerning wars are so humane that even trees and livestock belonging to the enemy must be spared.

“But as usual, Boko Haram manifested ignorance of Islamic etiquette by attacking an educational institution where young girls are concentrated. The forceful kidnap of 276 Chibok girls on April 14, 2014 readily comes to mind and the various acts of forceful conversion and marriage of some of the girls remain objectionable, and alien to the tenets of Islam.

“Nonetheless, MURIC is worried by the similarity in coincidental circumstances in the Chibok and Dapchi abductions. Both attacks occurred a week after troops was withdrawn from the towns. Even the 2013 massacre of 29 students in a secondary school in Buni Yadi by Boko Haram a week after the withdrawal of troops arouses our curiousity…

“We call for an urgent investigation into the withdrawal of troops from Dapchi barely a week before the attack. We charge the Nigerian military to put other soft spots in the North East under close watch. We implore Nigerians from all walks of life to pray for the safe and early return of all the missing girls.”

TMC President Dr Lukman AbdurRaheem said it is disheartening when those abducted in Chibok have not been fully released.

AbdurRaheem said: “A thousand and one questions beg for answers! Are politicians playing politics with our lives?  Where is the Governor as the Chief Security Officer of Yobe with huge security vote? Is the Police Commissioner sleeping? Where were the military men seconded to that axis?  Is this a case of the fifth columnist in action?

It is our considered opinion that those in the positions of power should learn from history and be alive to their responsibilities. To whom much is given, much is expected. We have surrendered our liberty to government and we pay taxes for running the state. It is therefore important for our lives and property to be protected.”

He blamed the military for abandoning that spot.

“The incident calls for urgent investigation. TMC advises Federal Government to be courageous by using a 15-day ultimatum to the military and other security agencies to return all the missing girls,” he said.

Abduction: Rescued woman dies after giving birth

    •FRSC boss hails ‘gallant’ men

An expectant mother, who was rescued from suspected kidnappers by some road safety officials,  died yesterday after giving birth to a baby boy.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officials rushed her  to hospital after rescuing her around a  filling station in Badagry.

She was being driven away by two men in a car marked KTU 356 CE, which was coming from Cotonou, when the FRSC officials came to her rescue.

It was gathered that the deceased might have thought that the car was being used as a cab.

But on realising her mistake,   she raised the alarm. Her shouts of Ole! Ole!! Ole!!! were said to have attracted other road users.

The Nation gathered that other motorists pursued the car, which was forced to stop around the filling station.

The  FRSC team led by  P. Danboyi pounced on the car and its occupants and became suspicious on sighting the injured  woman.

While they were interrogating the men, those chasing the car arrived and reported  that the woman was screaming for help.

She was rushed to the hospital where she was delivered of the baby through caesarean section (CS) after going into emergency labour.  But she died a few hours later around 3pm. Her body has been deposited at the Badagry General Hospital mortuary.

A mob descended on the suspects and set them ablaze. But soldiers put out the fire, dispersed the mob and handed over the suspects to the police.

FRSC’s Unit Commander in Badagry, Fatai Bakare, said the baby was in good health.

Bakare said: “There were three persons in the vehicle, two suspected kidnappers (men) and an expectant woman who was their victim. The woman has sustained body injuries and was rushed to Ola-Oki Hospital, Ibereko for medical attention, where she immediately gave birth to a baby boy’’.

FRSC Corps Marshal Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer,  Bisi Kazeem, hailed the “gallant officers and commended them for their bravery’’.

Boboye said his men were on the road to control    traffic and guarantee public safety by collaborating with   other law enforcement agencies.

Police spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP), said it was not a case of kidnapping but that of ‘one-chance’ robbers, adding : ‘’She had some goods, boarded a vehicle to convey her to her location but along the line, they wanted to rob her.

“She raised the alarm and the robbers afraid that they might run into trouble with security operatives, pushed her off the vehicle.

“Unknown to them, people heard the woman’s screams and saw when she fell from the vehicle. They pursued the vehicle, caught up with the robbers and attacked them.

“The woman was picked up and rushed to hospital by FRSC officials and she was delivered of her baby through surgery.

“Soldiers intervened and stopped the mob from killing the suspects. The soldiers contacted the police and handed over the suspects to the police. They are currently at an undisclosed hospital.”

Also freed by the terror sect were 10 women kidnapped during a raid by the militant group on a military/police convoy on Damboa road, near Maiduguri.

The lecturers were part of a team of consultants engaged by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for oil prospecting in Kukawa area of Lake Chad, northern Borno.

They unexpectedly ran into a Boko Haram ambush while returning to Maiduguri with security escorts including Civilian JTF at Magumeri road and were subsequently overpowered and abducted.

Some of their colleagues were killed during the abduction.

Presidential Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the release last night.

He said: “Their release followed a series of negotiations as directed by President Buhari and was facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC.

“In expectation of their being brought to the DSS headquarters, a team of doctors and psychologists has been placed on standby. The rescued persons may be presented to the President and thereafter released to their families, if there are no issues of security or medical concerns.

“The President, who got step by step progress reports on the lengthy negotiations while they took place, received the good news with a lot of happiness. He commended all those who in one way or the other helped in making the release possible.

“He then urged the DSS and the Nigerian Army to intensify efforts to bring home the remaining Chibok Girls still in the custody of the terrorists.

The Director-General, Malam Lawal Daura, assured the President that they were working hard to bring home the remaining girls and, as soon as possible, bring the Chibok Girls saga to an end.

Ekiti 2018: Cleric seeks action against abduction

A popular preacher and pastor-in-charge of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Mountain of Mercy at Erio-Ekiti in Ekiti State, Prophet Sam Olu Alo, has called for tight security to forestall renewed kidnapping in the state before, during and after the July governorship election.

He said: “It was shown to me in a vision that some people – young and old – will be kidnapped. But in the end, the kidnappers would be arrested.”

He called for love, saying this is what Nigerians lack, and it has contributed to the nation’s setback.

Over 200 youths benefited from the gesture, which the cleric said was part of his contribution to the health and wellness of society.

Lawmaker’s abduction: Police call for calm

The Police in Taraba State yesterday called for calm following the abduction of Mr Hosea Ibi, a member of the House of Assembly by gunmen four days ago.

Command spokesman Mr David Misal, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP), told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo that the police would  ensure that the lawmaker was released unhurt.

Misal said the police was making progress in their search for the lawmaker and his captors.

He said giving more information to the public would jeopardise the investigation.

“The update we have is not for public consumption in the interest of the security and the safety of the lawmaker.

“I am sure you are aware that all the ears of the kidnappers are open to hear what we will say so that they can re-strategise and sabotage our efforts.

“Whenever we secure his release, we will inform the public,” Misal said.

Ibi was abducted by gunmen in Takum, headquarters of Takum Local Government Area.

The lawmaker, who represents Takum 1, was abducted from his mother’ house on December 30.
