  • Election petitions: We’re being threatened, Akinlade tells tribunal

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, was told on Wednesday by Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade that himself and his witnesses have been subjects of sundry threats by unknown persons in the last couple of days.

Sebastian Hon, counsel to Akinlade told the tribunal, chaired by Justice Halilu Yusuf, that his client and his witnesses – over a dozen of them – were being threatened in connection with the pending petition challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Prince Adedapo Abiodun, as the winner of the governorship election conducted on March 9, 2019.

The petition was filed by Akinlade – hitherto an APC lawmaker representing Yewa South and Ipokia Federal Constituency in the Eighth Legislative Assembly before moving to the APM to contest the governorship poll against Abiodun (APC ) and other candidates.

Hon raised the alarm immediately after the court proceeding, saying a witness was practically dragged out of the court by his father over an alleged threat to life.

He later told reporters about the threats to his client and the witnesses.

According to him, the policeman protecting the petitioner (Akinlade) was withdrawn last week.

But, Dapo Abiodun’s counsel; Dele Adesina, SAN, debunked the allegation, arguing that he could not imagine a more peaceful atmosphere than what was being enjoyed by the court since it started sitting.

Also, counsel to APC, Habib Ajayi, said if withdrawing the security of the petitioner was a threat, the petitioner should better address that with the security.

Hon, however, requested that the hearing of the petition be put on hold until they review their security situation as well as lodge complaints to the right authorities.

Sebastian said: “The police security for the petitioner, who was the governorship candidate of APM, has been withdrawn. The witnesses, who are to come and testify, have been threatened. Just yesterday, one of them, the father came here. He said his life is under threat and that his son wanted to kill him. The rest have been under threat as well.

“So, we told the tribunal that we can’t proceed today after we managed to secure the attendance of three witnesses. So, we are going back to look at the security situation and appeal to the authorities. I personally would be making this appeal as well because we counsel, fellow petitioners and the petitioners themselves need security.

“We have every right to be here and we ask the Inspector General of Police, the Directorate of State Security and all concerned to offer security to us.”

But, Abiodun’s counsel said: “On the issue of threat to life, you have been here since the beginning of this hearing and what you see is important than what anyone tells you. I don’t see or imagine a more peaceful atmosphere than what we are seeing here.

“It is evident for everybody to see and beyond that, the person who is the governor of the state today, my client, is a man of peace just like I described him as a dove inside the tribunal room. I know him intimately. But, you know we lawyers can make a mountain out of a mould hill; we can describe a no petition as a petition .

“This allegation is like talking about a man, who is not a man, trying to kill a bird, which is not a bird, on a tree that is not a tree.

“I was the one that even said if they need to be assured to assemble their witnesses, no problems; we would help them, we would go to the Commissioner of Police to assure them.

“But if they can call 28 witnesses without any molestation, then, I don’t know what he is talking about”.

Also, counsel to APC argued that it was an administrative issue between who provided the security and for whom the security is being provided.

He said: “If there is a threat because the police attached to the petitioner was allegedly withdrawn, that is an issue the petitioner should take up with the security because that is not a threat as far as we are concerned. It is an administrative issue between whoever request for police protection and who gave police protection.

However, Justice Halilu said he was not afraid of anyone, except God, who he would give an account of his stewardship to after death.

But he stressed that the security of everyone is of utmost paramount.

“On the threat, I will want the counsels to meet with the Commissioner of Police for better security architecture,” Justice Halilu said.

The court was however adjourned till June 24 for the petitioner to present more witnesses.

  • APC’s victory must stand, says Ogun ex-commissioner

Former Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Muyiwa Oladipo has said that the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), governorship candidate in the just-concluded governorship and houses of assembly elections, Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade, should have accepted defeat.

He said Akinlade should have “accepted defeat in good faith and submit to the will of the people as the election of governor-elect Prince Dapo Abiodun by the people stands and nobody will upturn the election by any means, whether legal or illegal.”

Oladipo explained that the election of Abiodun as governor-elect was the freest and most rancour-free in the history of the state as adjudged by various national and international observers who witnessed the election and gave the appraisal to the electoral body who conducted the election.

In a statement signed by the former Commissioner in reaction to an interview granted a media outfit in Abeokuta, challenging the result of the election at the tribunal by the APM, Oladipo said Akinlade’s reactions on the election indicated that he was still suffering from defeat.

He added that the APM and its candidate were yet to advance any concrete argument to discredit the election rated as most peaceful, saying that “their attempt to heat up the polity and create unnecessary tension through their unguarded utterances days before, during and after the election failed and were now blaming the APC for their failure.”

In his reaction to the petition of Labour Party (LP) candidate, Mrs Modupeolu Sanyaolu, he said it was a tip of iceberg as the party has two factions in the state, saying that the two factional leaders have congratulated the governor-elect, including their governorship candidate.

He added that he was surprised to hear that LP has headed to the tribunal to challenge the omission of its party logo on the ballot paper, noting that the party led by Comrade Abayomi Arabambi who double as Chairman of Intra-party Advisory Council (IPAC), has congratulated the leader of the party in the state, Olusegun Osoba and the governor-elect.

He said the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. AbdulGaniy Raji, also expressed his surprise in the petition of Labour Party at the tribunal, adding that it’s supposed to have pre-empted the process before going to polls, which would have been addressed before the election.

“There is no moral standing for LP to now file petition before the tribunal. As it is now, it is very clear that LP has no locus standi in initiating any petition before the tribunal and all efforts to truncate the election that produced Prince Dapo Abiodun will not stand,” Oladipo quoted.

Oladipo said the party has once congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governor-elect, Prince Dapo Abiodun on their victory at the election. But it was a surprise when the same party filed application at the tribunal, challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its logo’s omission at the polls.

  • Akinwande to Amosun: Leave Akinlade, back Isiaka if you mean well for Ogun West

An Ogun West leader and philanthropist, Gbenga Akinwande, has advised Governor Ibikunle Amosun to leave his anointed man and candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement(APM), Hon. Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade, and back Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka(GNI) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to actualize his 2019 governorship ambition if he has the interest of Yewa people at heart.

Akinwande who is the President of Gbenga Akinwande Foundation, said Isiaka is more popular, has the experience and exposure, stressing that  if the appeal is heeded by the Governor, it would ensure the formation of Yewa/Awori united force for the 2019 gubernatorial polls.

The Philanthropist gave the advice during the 2018 edition of Yewa Awori nations cup at the weekend which the Foundation sponsors annually to foster unity in Ogun West, engender development of soccer talents among the zone’s youth and also stimulate activities that could boost the socioeconomic life of the people.

Akinwande  described the inability of the Yewa/ Awori to produce a governor since the creation of the state, as a total political injustice and an explanation for the backwardness of the area.

The indigene of Aiyetoro in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, however, lauded Amosun for publicly declaring his decision  to work for the governorship aspiration of the zone but said the decision could  be well served If the governor backs Isiaka.

He said: “If the governor truly wants a Yewa/Awori person to become the next governor, he should then look in the direction of Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka considering his popularity and intelligence. This is a first graduate and a chartered accountant who has contested twice.

“He is imbued with everything one could be looking out for in a governor. If the governor agreed to work for him that will give Yewa a united force at the polls come 2019.

“I don’t know him personally but I am an Ogun west man and all I want is an Ogun west governor.

“I am not even soliciting for any financial support from the government but talking about moral support, I think the government has lost it.

” You couldn’t imagine that we had to pay for this pitch before using it. If everyone must now pay for the pitch before giving back to their community for football match then for what purpose was the field built?

“So, I am calling on the governor most especially to please look into this and invest in our young persons and as well make conducive environment for events like this.”

  • ACO to Amosun: Imbibe spirit of sportsmanship, embrace Abiodun

The media team of prince Abiodun Campaign Organisation (ACO) has urged Governor Ibikunle Amosun to allow the supremacy of the party to prevail regarding the candidature of Prince Dapo Abiodun as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Ogun state as declared by the Muhammed Indabawa – led primary Committee for the state.
ACO also advised Amosun to face the reality that his preferred man, Hon. Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade, has  lost the party’s ticket and thus imbibes the spirit of sportsmanship and party politics demands that losers accept their losses and join hands with Abiodun to serve the larger interest of the party and the good people of Ogun state.
The media team  in a statement by Olamide Lawal,  he claimed  that the national leaders of APC, including President Muhammadu Buhari, have convened series of meetings to appease Amosun to move on and accept the rightful winner of the party’s ticket, alleging however,  that the governor in his own volition refuses to yield to the party’s directives to accept the decision of the National Working Committee(NWC) in line with the constitution of APC.
The statement reads: “We have again received a news credited to the governor of Ogun state, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun where he vows that he has not accepted Prince Dapo Abiodun as the winner of the APC gubernatorial primary.
“It is no more news to the good people of Ogun state that Prince Dapo Abiodun is the APC gubernatorial candidate in the State having polled the highest number of votes in a freely and fairly contested direct primary election as announced by the Electoral Panel sent in by the National Working Committee of the party.
“The committee was led by Mr Muhammed Indabawa, a retired commissioner of Police with a distinguished record of service. With the general elections fast approaching, the governor has failed to unite the party in preparation for the huge task ahead.
“This is because his preferred successor lost the party’s ticket. The spirit of sportsmanship and party politics demands that losers accept their losses and join hands with the winner to serve the larger interest of the party and the society.

“There have been efforts on the part of state and national leaders of the party to forge a common front in preparation for the victory of the party at the general elections but the governor has consistently made attempts to frustrate the reconciliatory efforts of the party leaders because he wants to install his successor by all means.
“It is on record that national leaders of the party including President Muhammadu Buhari, have convened series of meetings to appease the governor to move on and accept the rightful winner of the party’s ticket.
“The governor in his own volition and wishes, refuses to yield to the party’s directives to accept the decision of the NWC in line with the constitution of the party, APC.
We cannot turn down the people’s will having elected Dapo Abiodun as their flag bearer and it is time we move on in preaching the gospel of Dapo Abiodun to the good people of Ogun state who have all been yearning to see him in the exalted seat.
“Abiodun as an entrepreneur who has provided over 10,000 direct and 250,000 indirect jobs to the people has become the toast of many residents of Ogun state and they can’t wait to have him as their next governor.
“The acumen of Abiodun in building and maintaining businesses for over  three decades has become a selling point which many citizens of the state have seen as a means that can move the state forward and increase its IGR for more infrastructural development, human capital development and better living conditions of the people.
“It is in this view that we call on all stakeholders in Ogun state to join hands and let’s move our dear state forward so as to secure a better future for the coming generations.”
