  • False accusation: Ganduje sues medium for defamation

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has filed a defamation suit against online medium Daily Nigerian for portraying him in an inappropriate conduct.

A statement yesterday by Information Commisionser Muhammad Garba said the publication dwelt a doctored video “with no material facts or evidance to prove the allegations, other than a callous attempt to tarnish the hard-earned image of the office and the person of the governor.”

The statement added that “the governor wishes to once again emphatically debunk the allegation of receiving gratification of $5million or any amount whatsoever from any person or body.”

The statement alleged that the fellow making the allegation “is a serial blackmailer and extorter.

“We are also aware that the hidden motive is to reduce the popularity of the governor and consequently affect the anticipated quantum of APC votes from Kano in the 2019 general election.

“While the state government is taking the legal action, we wish to assure the good people of Kano that His Excellency will remain focused and continue with laudable programmes that will add value to the lives of the people of Kano State.

“We also call on the general public, especially members of the APC to remain calm and always be law abiding.” ano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has filed a defamation suit against online medium Daily Nigerian for portraying him in an inappropriate conduct.

  • I’m under pressure to leave APC – Yari

    *Insists primaries held in Zamfara

*Says it’s a huge joke to nominate Zamfara Gov candidate from Abuja

Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, on Friday said that he has been under intense pressure to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with his supporters.

Yari, who is the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) spoke with State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

He also handed over the results of the primaries conducted in the state to the President after the Jumaat prayer.

He promised that despite the pressure from his people to dump the APC, he will remain with the party and fight against any injustice.

According to him, his supporters were aggrieved over the turn out of events following the party leadership’s refusal to acknowledge the primaries conducted last week in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had also barred the APC from fielding any candidates for the 2019 poll in Zamfara for not conducting primary elections in the state.

He explained that the development has caused frustration among his supporters.

The governor also warned the national leadership of the party not to present any list that did not emanate from the primaries conducted before the expiration of the deadline for the primaries in the state.

Reacting to reports of his purported romance with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party on the social media, Yari, who was flanked by the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, said, “I don’t know whether that is a joke or otherwise.

“But for me, if you check my history since 1998, APP, and 2002 when Buhari joined ANPP, and 2015 APC, no time that I shifted from one party to another. That is not in my culture. So, the issue of leaving the party is not true.

“But some other people are sending rumour through the social media. I have seen my picture with the PDP and other parties. Yes, I cannot deny pressure from the people that we should leave APC but what I told them is that what we are looking for is just justice.

“We conducted election and we want to see what the result is going to look. But I think for any body to come under the national secretariat and say he is going to nominate a candidate, I think, it is a very huge joke.” he said

The Zamfara State Governor wondered why the INEC could claim that there were no primaries in the state when the government agencies including the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the electoral umpire was at hand to monitor the process in the state.

He said though there were some hitches in some places in the state that made the committee to postpone primary elections in the affected areas, the process he said was concluded the next day.

He said, “There were hitches somewhere but we decided to suspend the area there were problems until the following day. So, the following day, we continued and we concluded the election by the people nominated by that committee to conduct election but the committee ran away and refused to collate the results.

“So, what we did was that we filed the results and kept it under the watch of those people and waited to see what was going to happen. The second committee waited 32 hours to the closing, we thought the committee will hasten and come up with modalities for the election.

“But committee wasted about 18 hours discussing about how the modalities were going to be. So, when we realised that, we were actually advised by the supervisory agency that is INEC and other agencies there that the best thing to do as the people had voted and since it was 7am was to start counting.

“When they finished, they released the materials and we adopted the numbers. Already, we had produced our own set of forms for the national Assembly which we have done and then, when we concluded, I didn’t see members of the committee until one and half hours to the time.

“Then, when they came I asked them what they came for, they said they came for reconciliation and I said which reconciliation? People can not reconcile over a month and you are trying to reconcile in an hour. Then, I realised that there was a game that was being played so that we can run out of time.” he said

According to him, the national body of APC had other crude ways to produce candidates contrary to section 87 of the Electoral Act that the party must follow a process before producing any candidate.

“Therefore, the most important is that we conducted election on the 3rd and 4th of October and all agencies, INEC, Civil Defence, Police, and DSS were there and they signed for us and the report was written by the REC that elections were conducted.

“Unfortunately, for the INEC to say that there was no election, we don’t know where they got their information but we believe they have a report directly from their representative there that election was held in Zamfara state, so, it depends on what they want to do.

“But, in any way, we were advised when the chairman of the committee came out and said there was no election in Zamfara state, we realised it was going to be a litigation issue. We quickly rushed to court, we filed a case and the case is coming up next week.

“So, I think that is the only saving grace for the party and INEC for court of competent jurisdiction to give judgement on Zamfara matter that there was election.” he stated.

  • Oshiomhole to Shekarau: progressives like you are needed in APC

It is now all over between ex Kano State governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and the Peoples Democratic party (PDP).

Shekarau yesterday hosted the   National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State in his Kano residence to wrap up talks on his switch to the APC.

The former minister is said to be upset by his alleged ill-treatment by the PDP after what was perceived as too much concession to Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso following his recent defection from the APC.

Oshiomohole described Shekarau as one of the progressives much needed in the party.

He said: “For me, it is a rare opportunity to be in your home and reunite with you. I know from your lifestyle, your background, from what you did as the governor of Kano State, nobody can claim to be more progressive than you.

“I am also fully aware that you are one of the founding fathers of the APC. You may not have expected the amount of efforts you invested in the formation of the All Progressive Congress which you did not enjoy.

“I have always said that we should be going forward. This meeting has offered us the opportunity to reunite once again as progressives.

“I have come to pay my respect to His Excellency (Shekarau). I have spoken to my brother, the executive governor of Kano State, on the need for all of us to work together for the development of Kano State and the development of our nation, Nigeria.

“I want to believe that this is a happy reunion and we shall continue to play progressive politics for the good of the Nigerian people.”

Governor Ganduje, who was part of the APC delegation, recalled his relationship with Shekarau and how Kwankwaso had treated him in the past.

His words: “I and Malam Ibrahim Shekarau belong to the same constituency even though we were never in the same political party.

“The reason why I said we are from the same constituency is that Malam Ibrahim Shekarau is a bureaucrat and I am a bureaucrat. When I was Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, some 20 years ago, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau was Permanent Secretary.

“When we came in 1999, myself as Deputy Governor, the former Governor of Kano State, Kwankwaso, was the governor and Malam Ibrahim Shekarau was permanent secretary in the Cabinet Office.

“I could recall that because of a statement by sycophants of former Governor Kwankwaso, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau was given a query. He came to my house at 7 am to tell me that he was given a query. I said go and make a photocopy of that query. He made a photocopy and brought it to me.

“I met with Governor Kwankwaso and asked him what is happening? The Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office said he was given a query. What is the problem?

“He (Kwankwaso) said he learnt Malam Shekarau was holding meetings with some Ulamas in order to contest election.

“I said, ‘What is wrong in holding meetings with Ulamas? Even myself, through my Ganduje Foundation, I hold meetings with Ulamas. What is the problem? Please withdraw that query.’

“But the Governor refused to withdraw the query, and he had the right to do that.

“What later happened was that Malam Shekarau was posted out to the Ministry of Education. I called the Commissioner of Education at that time and said Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has been posted to your ministry. I asked him to discuss with Malam Shekarau what type of job he would want to do in the Ministry of Education.

“Then the Honourable Commissioner asked Malam Shekarau what he would want to be, and Malam Shekarau said he wanted to be a classroom teacher, and Malam Ibrahim Shekarau was posted out as a classroom teacher.

“As God would have it, in less than two months, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau became the Governor of Kano State. He defeated the incumbent governor. He defeated Kwankwaso and myself. He sent us out of Government House.

“One important thing is that Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and myself have always been good associates. We have always been good friends. In fact, we are like minds; and for him to be in APC, I am the happiest person in this state today.

“Before, a friend, a brother in different political party, now our dreams have come true; now we are together in the same political party.

“We understand ourselves. We believe in the same ideology. We believe in commitment—the development of our people, the development of our state.

“I think there is no better time to have a brother, to come together and serve the people of Kano State.

“I tell you today that all other things would be sorted out between Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and myself; between Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and our government; between the followers of Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and our government, everything will be sorted out peacefully.

“So, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, we welcome you to this very important party, the APC. You are one of the founding fathers of APC. The hyena that drove you out of APC is the same hyena that drove you out of PDP. We are happy that you will soon make your pronouncement. Let us come together and fight that lion.”

Malam Shekarau who said his position for membership of APC would be made known in a few hours, said: “I am happy today for you (Oshiomhole) and His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, to pay me this special visit. I feel highly honoured; I feel highly respected.

“I am not totally surprised because the National Chairman has been a long-standing friend, a long-standing colleague and a long-standing comrade.

“I am not surprised also when he emerged the chairman of the APC. I want to assure you that those of us here in Kano are aware of all that has been happening because history is repeating itself.

“All along, I have been beating my chest with pride that anybody writing the history of APC and the name of Ibrahim Shekarau is not there, that history is incomplete. I had the singular honour of being the chief midwife of APC.

“For me and Governor Ganduje, regardless of any political party we find ourselves, our mission is always one—sincerity of purpose to move Kano and Nigeria forward. Our consultations are in full gear, in the next couple of hours, we will make it known to the world our stand as far as membership of APC is concerned.”

Other dignitaries in the APC delegation were Senator Kabiru Gaya (Kano South), Senator Barau Jubrin (Kano North), Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum; Chief Whip of Kano State House of Assembly, Bappa Babba Dan Agundi; Senator Mohammed Bello; Senior Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, Abdulraman Kawu Sumaila; Private Secretary to Ganduje, Ibrahim Kankorofi; members of Kano State executive council, among others.

A grand rally has been scheduled for today in Kano to formally receive Shekarau.

  • Ganduje signs Executive Order of Open Government Partnership

The Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has signed an Executive Order of Open Government Partnership (OGP) as part of effort toward the fight against corruption, improve transparency and accountability in governance.

Abba Anwar, the Chief Press Secretary to Ganduje stated this in statement he signed and made available to newsmen in Kano on Tuesday.

He quoted the governor as saying that the signing of OGP was also part of the government renewed effort to improve citizens’ participation and access to public information.

“Kano State has joined the Open Government Partnership to deepen institutional reforms, fight corruption, and grant citizens’ right of access to public records and information and to enable citizens to effectively participate in governance.

“On the premise of answering the call of President Muhammadu Buhari, that Nigeria must fight corruption to standstill, Ganduje becomes very committed in the OGP project.

“He believes that states also should copy from Buhari’s abhorrence to corrupt practices, “Ganduje said.

The governor said with strong anti-corruption institutions in the state, the Executive Order would help in strengthening optimal performance within the enclave of global best practices fiscal discipline and transparency.

“Kano state shall fully implement the Open Government Partnership (OGP) principles in its reform agenda. Every Ministry Department or Agency (MDA).

“Every public institution in Kano state shall establish an office and appoint suitably trained officials as Open Government and Access to Information Officers to ensure effective implementation of this Order.”

He said the state government would inaugurate State Steering Committee and Action Plan, within the next few days to ensure effective implementation of the order.

  • Ganduje versus Kwankwaso: Who will laugh last in Kano?

Since former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the battle for Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s seat in 2019 has gathered more steam as supporters of the two top politicians in Kano get set for a royal combat, reports Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu

BEFORE Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last month, Kano was one of the states in the Northwest where observers had considered an easy win for the ruling APC in 2019 governorship election. This was notwithstanding the prolonged face-off between Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and former Governor Kwankwaso.

But with Kwankwaso’s recent defection to the main opposition party, PDP, coupled with the intrigues that have trailed the defection barely a month after, it has become clear that the 2019 governorship race in Kano would be a royal battle.

It would be recalled that Ganduje served as Kwankwaso’s deputy before he eventually emerged governor but the two fell apart shortly after the 2015 election.

    Their face-off and future elections

Although the face-off between Ganduje and his predecessor, Kwankwaso, had been noted earlier, the governor told newsmen in February what he considered to be the genesis of their parting of way. He alleged that the problem resulted from his resistance of “the attempt by somebody who had left office to decide what happened in the state.”

Their relationship, which was very intimate, had gone sour so much that the state police command once prevented Kwankwaso from traveling from Abuja, where he is serving as a senator, to Kano. Also, while the state APC became factionalised between Gunduje and Kwankwaso’s supporters, the senator’s faction of the party boycotted local council elections.

Explaining further, why he fell out with his former boss, Ganduje said: “Well, as you know, we were very good friends. In fact, my politics cannot be complete without Kwankwaso and the history of Kwankwaso politics cannot be complete without me.

“But somewhere, somehow, things went wrong. But we believe in politics, you will get to a point you cannot rule and manage a state and then you are being controlled from outside, you know that one is very difficult to happen if you look at the psychology of leaders.”

As the battle for 2019 election peaked, especially after the mass defection of many top politicians, including Senator Kwankwaso, from APC to PDP, observers noted that the battle for the governor’s seat in Kano would be narrowed to a show of power between Ganduje and Kwankwaso. This became even more pronounced following reports of a pact between Kwankwaso and his erstwhile political rival, Ibrahim Shekarau, also a former governor, to bury their past misunderstandings and work together in order to unseat Ganduje.

It was said that a major highlight of their agreement was that Kwankwaso will nominate a governorship candidate while Shekarau will nominate the deputy.

The situation in government circles in Kano, The Nation gathered, became more tensed in the last two weeks, when it was learnt that Kwankwaso, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, is not only poised to battle his former deputy head-on but is determined to nominate for the governorship ticket of PDP, Ganduje’s deputy, Hafiz Abubakar, a former Professor of Nutrition, at Bayero University, Kano.

According to a source, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman; “the report that it was the deputy governor that Senator Kwankwaso would nominate to fly PDP’s ticket caused a lot of tension in the Government House here in Kano. Before the current development, insiders here knew there was a carefully hidden secret about the deteriorating relationship between the governor and his deputy. Because the two were known associates of former Governor Kwankwaso, no one knew what to believe or what to say publicly.”

But with last week’s defection of the immediate past Deputy Governor, Abubakar, and six state lawmakers from the ruling APC to join Kwankwaso in PDP, the battle line, which was originally drawn the day Kwankwaso left APC, has become more emboldened.

Announcing his resignation and decision to join PDP, Abubakar said, “I have endured immeasurable and unjustifiable humiliation for over two and a half years without any reason other than my principled position on the issues of governance and the desire to keep the government on track.

“Under the circumstances and given the deteriorating state of affairs and your continued disrespect for the office of the Deputy Governor as well as your expression of several injustices on my person; I regret to say that I have no option than to succumb to my inner calling.”

Although this action confirms the gathering political storm in Kano, the Ganduje-led state government said Abubakar’s exit and decision to join Kwankwaso was long expected.

A statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture, Muhammad Garba, said:

“We are aware of the event at Mambayya House on Tuesday when the former Deputy Governor finally revealed to the world his political betrayal in about three years in office as the Deputy Governor of Kano State and the Commissioner for Education.

“To discernable minds, there is no doubt that the ‘contentment’s’ of the nine-page text of press conference, painstakingly read out by Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, is not only laughable, but filled with ambiguity and confusion.

“For Prof. Hafiz to dissociate himself from his chairmanship of the 2015 Kano Gubernatorial Transition Committee, the findings and pronouncements he made, is a clear indication that he no longer has a mind of his own.

“Going by his acclaimed political pedigree, one would have expected that Prof. Hafiz resigned his position long ago for what he described as, ‘political persecution and humiliation’.”

“It is kind enough of Prof. Hafiz to confirm that he was paid his entitlements even when he chose to abandon his service to the good people of Kano State and humanity.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that Prof. Hafiz hurriedly left office in anticipation of a constitutional sledgehammer from Kano State House of Assembly, over his strong antagonism to policies of the State Government that have direct impact on the standard of living of the good people of Kano. We wish Prof. Hafiz well in the voyage of his godfather, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, as we welcome his final exit from our great party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), as a good omen.”

It was an official response that confirmed the determination of the Ganduje-led APC to make the election a battle royale.

    2019 fears

The Nation learnt during the week that in spite of the counter claims by the two leading parties in Kano today, there is palpable fear over who would eventually claim the Government House.

APC however is confident to retain the seat because of what an insider described as Ganduje’s excellent performance and President Muhammadu Buhari’s cult-like followership in the state. “Yes, Kwankwaso is popular and influential but he, even with the cooperation of Shekarau, cannot beat the combined influence of Buhari and Ganduje. The combination is much more than mere power of incumbency. It is a fact that anyone here in Kano can attest to,” Mallam Isa Kano said.

Ironically, there is almost equal degree of hope in the camp of PDP. This, according to Alhaji Umar Yakubu, is based on “the reality about the near larger-than-life image of Kwankwaso amongst Kwankwasiya faithful and others.  You must know that following his defection, there was a gale of defections on the floor of the House of Representatives, where 37 lawmakers, 10 of whom are from Kano State, immediately announced their exit from APC. That show of support was followed by six loyalists of the former governor in the Kano State House of Assembly who also defected to PDP last week. So, it is something we can all see without making much effort,” he said.

From the reactions of most respondents, it could be seen that the Kano 2019 governorship race can no longer be taken for granted by any political party or interest. The current intrigues have revealed growing strength in both APC and PDP. It only remains to be seen, who, amongst the two, would eventually laugh last.

  • Kano State Govt. committed to empowering the youth—Ganduje

Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to empower youths in the state through training on various vocational skills.
Ganduje made the remark at the National Youth Week celebration on Saturday in Kano.
“The government attaches so much importance to empowerment programme because at the end, the beneficiaries will be self-reliant, thereby improving the economic capacity of the state.
“We have confidence in our youths and they are our hope and leaders of tomorrow, if well educated,” he said.

He said that his administration had empowered no fewer than 50,000 youths on various skills acquisition programmes across the 44 local government areas of the state.
According to him, the programme was to expose youths to various skills such as carpentry, plumbing, panel beating, car repairs and vulcanising, among others.
He said that the training would go a long way in complementing the efforts of the Federal Government toward addressing unemployment among youths in the country.
The governor said that the State Government had built ultra-modern skill acquisition centre worth more than N4 billion.
Ganduje said that 72 youths were sponsored by the state government for training in various fields of automobile engineering at the Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Learning Centre in Kaduna.
He said that the beneficiaries had since completed the training and were now training other youths in the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba, commended the governor for his efforts in empowering women and youths.
He said that the empowerment programmes were designed to improve living standard of the youths in the state.

Garba also commended the governor for his foresight in building multi-billion Naira skill acquisition centre and his efforts in paying scholarships for students studying both at home and abroad.
Malam Kabiru Lakwaya, the Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Kano State Chapter, commended both Federal and State Governments for their efforts in creating jobs for the youths in the state and the country at large.
He advised youths to be dedicated, hard working and to stay away from drugs and other social vices.

  • Kano has over Three Million out of school Children – Ganduje

Governor of Kano state Abdullahi Ganduje said three million children are out of school in his state alone, stressing the need to curb Africa’s population explosion.

Speaking at Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, UK, Ganduje noted that, population explosion in Africa is a reality and education is not matching up with population growth.

“One important factor that divides the population of the world into two is education, whether the population will be an asset, depends on education, whether it will be a liability also depends on education,” Ganduje said.

“It seems we are comfortable with the population of Africa; that Africa will be highly populated and that would be an asset, and therefore we would conquer the world.

“The 10 most literate countries in Africa; Seychelles, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Sao Tome, Libya, Namibia, Mauritius, Cape Verde, Botswana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe — we all know that these are small countries.”The governor, a University of Ibadan alumnus, who gave his thoughts on the theme of the event “Higher Education and Demographic Growth in Africa” said the continent needs to engage in plans to improve infrastructure for the future, and also cut population.

“The population of students in Kano state now is over three million; the population of those outside the school system is also over three million. So if we are talking about Africa, we can confidently say the level of literacy is inversely proportional to population. Are we safe?

“The way our discussion is going on, it seem that we are working on the assumption that literacy level will be directly proportional to literacy level. So, I think we better examine these issues very very seriously.

“We said Britain has maintained a level of population for over how many years, and Nigeria, it is going further, and Africa, it is going further. But what are we doing? Since we don’t have the economy.

“Since the economy is weak, we will work on the infrastructural facilities no doubt, but we also have to control the other side. Otherwise, what is the meeting point?

“As we are now, we are complaining of lack of funds in other to improve the quality of education in Africa, and we have seen that the population will continue to increase, and we have not seen how our economy will continue to blossom, so I think we should examine the issue of population control in Africa.”

In Nigeria, over 10.5 million children are out of school, according to UNESCO — and this is the highest anywhere in the world.

At 198 million in 2018, the United Nations projects that Nigeria’s population will double by 2050, to be the third most populous nation in the world, after only India and China.

  • 2019: Kano solid for Buhari – Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State  said on Friday that the chances of President Muhammadu Buhari in next year’s elections remain formidable as they have always been over the years.

Ganduje told former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu who visited him in Government House,Kano that Buhari has “ never lost election in Kano, even when he was in the opposition.”

“At one time, we were in government, and he was in the opposition, and Buhari won his election here in Kano. Since he started politics in Nigeria, he has not lost election in Kano,” Gnaduje said.

“So, this time around, his chances are much higher because before he was in one party and the state government was in another party. But this time around, he is the Mr. President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under APC and I am the governor of Kano state and I am in APC.

“So, you can see all the variables that can make him win election are rightly placed here in Kano. So, we know there is no vacancy for any presidential candidate in the Villa except Buhari.

“For your information, it was here in when Buhari came for a two-day state visit where we were holding a meeting of stakeholders and we told him that we will take him to court if he decided not to contest election. And luckily enough, he escaped our litigation. He succumbed to our request and our pledge and he accepted to contest election.

“So, a state that offered that kind of threat and he accepted to contest election is a Buhari state. Secondly, Kano state has the highest number of delegates. We have over 400 delegates for the convention and any primary, so, you can see that Kano is a minimum of three states together.

“So, you can see how important we are. Luckily enough, Buhari is Kano and Kano is Buhari. I think that is the political language here.”

Kalu claimed those opposing Buhari’s re-election  want Nigeria to return to pre-2015  when treasury looting became the norm.

“They don’t want us to save money for the poor people. There cannot be Christmas and Sallah every day. We don’t have Sallah every day. They have looted enough; they should allow the masses to benefit,” he said.

“So, this is why we are here. We will continue to ask you (Ganduje) not to leave President Buhari. He is our President and we are going for four plus four equals to eight. And also for you, four plus four is equal to eight.”
