Kano warns absconding council chiefs on polio immunisation

KANO State government has cautioned key local government officials who were in the habit of neglecting their duty posts during the polio immunisation exercise.

Deputy Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who is also the coordinator of task force on the exercise, gave the warning in Kano while kick-starting another round of routine immunisation at Danhassan in Kura Local Government Area.

Ganduje, who expressed dismay over the habit of some local government chairmen who were not present during his supervision to some high risk areas, said government would not hesitate to institute severe punishment on anyone found guilty if the problem persists.

He noted that polio eradication programme should be a collective effort of all in order to achieve the desired goal.

The deputy governor said the state government would not tolerate any act capable of undermining the entire process.

On his remarks, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Haliru Alhassan, who also present at the occasion, praised the government for its commitment to polio eradication.

Alhassan also advised the general public to adhere to personal hygiene in order to protect themselves from polio and the Ebola virus disease, which recently had its way to the country.

He warned against the use of salt and bitter Kola as preventive measure to the disease.

But recent series of suicide bombing in Kano State, where almost 30 persons reportedly lost their lives and injured many others, marred one of the activities of immunisation exercise in the just concluded Immunisation Plus Days (IPDs).

A routine review meeting, which serves as a platform for the stakeholders to cross fertilise ideas on the entire activities and resolve on some cogent issues for better outing during the immunisation exercise was cancelled in the state’s eight metropolitan local government areas as a result of security challenges, which recently resurfaced during Sallah celebration.

Following the development, the stakeholders considered telephone conversation as the most effective channel of communication before, during and after the exercise as disclosed by the medical personnel in the affected local government areas, including Dala, Kano Municipal Council (KMC), Fagge, Tarauni, Ungogo, Kumbotso, Gwale and Nasarawa.

The Primary Health Care Officer in Kumbotso Local Government, Mr. Idris Adamu Balan, said all the key stakeholders have been directed to remain in their respective wards and avoid gathering that is more than a number of five persons, while the special monitoring team should go about their supervisions accordingly.

He explained that impressive success has so far been recorded in an effort to eradicate polio in Kumbotso, owning to the fact that the local council, recently considered as one of high risk councils, had no case of polio since last November.

Although the local government was not spear among the councils, which are still facing daunting challenges of non-compliance with polio vaccination, the PHC official said through efforts of both traditional and religious leaders among other key stakeholders, they were able to resolve the issues and the 164,000 targetted children were vaccinated.

The state task force on polio eradication had earlier noted that it has succeeded at ensuring that health workers do not skip houses during the IPDs, by engaging informants to bring feedbacks to the concerned authorities.
