Buhari has delivered on his promises –Abdullahi

Bolaji Abdullahi, former Minister of Sports and now national publicity secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), says it is wrong for anybody to say the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration has failed to fulfill the party’s electoral promises. In this interview with Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor, he cautioned prominent Nigerians against adding their voices to inciting statements ahead of the 2019 general elections.

A PROMINENT voice from the north, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has accused the APC of planning to rig the 2019 presidential election. What is your take on this?

Allegations like these are very weighty and people should not just make them just like that. Our eminent persons must be wary of adding their voices to such statements. If I may ask, where are the evidences to back this claim? Can the person making this allegation provide detailed evidences or proof? He should be able to prove the statement before making it publicly.

People should also learn to ask for detailed evidences when they hear or read statements like this. Most of these people making wild allegations probably have personal issues with Mr. President. I want to advise that they sort out such issues with him and leave the APC out of it. The APC will not need to rig election in 2019. The people voted for our party in 2015 massively. We are still relying on the same people to do it again in 2019.

Specifically, he said the north will not vote for Buhari in 2019

I am moved to ask if the person saying this is the spokesperson of the north. Or better still, I want to know which constituency of the north he is speaking for? Buhari is a northerner too. Is it the whole north that appointed him to speak for them? I think he should leave the issue of who the north will support for the people to decide. Elections are decided by the votes of the people, not personal opinions.

The north voted for the APC in 2015 even when some statements like this were being made. The people decided otherwise based on their knowledge of the man Buhari and the party APC. So, I would rather say we allow the people to make their choice on who to vote for and who not to vote for. Again, I say this statement is a very personal opinion of just one individual. It does not in any way represent the opinion of the north as a people or geo-political zone.

But would you also disagree with him on his claim that Buhari has failed to fulfil his campaign promises?

Of course I disagree with him. The APC as a party campaigned with a manifesto and promised specific things. What did Buhari promise? Buhari promised the people to fight Boko Haram with seriousness. He promised to revive the economy and fight corruption. I want to ask you if he has not been tackling all these things. It is not enough for people with personal scores to settle with Mr. President to cast aspersion on the entire government.

I take it that these are his personal opinions and nothing more than just that. Nigerians are the people to decide if the campaign promises are being fulfilled or not. They should be left to decide on that. The APC as a party is still very much loved by the good people of Nigeria who see the effort of the party at making life better for Nigerians. So, it is the people that can say whether the party is fulfilling its promises or not.

Is it true that APC is incapable of moving Nigeria forward as some have observed?

I still believe the APC can solve Nigeria’s problems. I must admit that there have been challenges. There are areas where things have not gone as expected. But largely, I believe the APC has the solution to Nigeria’s problems. The basis for saying this is not just because of the individuals in the party, but also because of my understanding of the philosophy of the party as expressed in its manifesto.

APC is a party that was formed on the basis of solving identified problems confronting Nigeria and Nigerians. The philosophy of the party expresses consideration for the issues that are pertinent to Nigerians, whether it is the issue of poverty, social welfare, education or health. It is based on this that I believe the APC is the right party for Nigerians at this stage of our development.

Again, I am cognisant of the fact that there have been challenges since we took over and a lot of things should be addressed consistently. I believe we are not where we should be at the moment, but APC is still the party that has the solution to Nigeria’s problems. With the support of Nigerians who have been very supportive of this administration since we took over, I am sure we will get there.

Some people also said the crises in the APC will militate against its chances in the 2019 elections

What people tend to describe as crises in APC are what I will call disagreements or misunderstandings which happen everywhere you find two or more people coming together to cohabit. I believe the party will in no time surmount all these cracks within its rank. These misunderstandings that you call crises will soon be a thing of the past and the APC will remain a formidable party.

I repeat, what we have are just disagreements or misunderstandings. I think what has happened is that over the years there have been disagreements on a couple of things, which is bound to happen. A political party exists to manage tendencies and interests. I think, the prospects of realignment in terms of closing those gaps that we have at the moment is very strong.

Today, things are no longer as they used to be because efforts have been made to address the misunderstandings. We are still talking among ourselves, and I believe we will overcome whatever misunderstanding or disagreement we might still find.

President Buhari has also been accused of campaigning contrary to the provision of the electoral act

Has the president started campaigning? I am not aware of that. As I said, we need evidences of these things so as to know how best to react to them. It is not enough to just make allegations. We need proofs.

Dr. Junaid said the president campaigned in his new year message

I didn’t notice that. Do you mean that President Buhari asked Nigerians to please vote for him in his new year message? I didn’t see that anywhere in that message. But if he did, I will like to be informed of where it is in the message. Even when there were reports about the appointment of a Campaign Director-General, the APC as a party said we were not aware of it.

Buhari has not mounted the podium anywhere to seek for votes. The APC has not embarked on any form of campaign for him or anybody else. So, how is the electoral act being breached by the party or the president? Members of the APC are not complaining about the president jumping the gun. Junaid is not a member of the APC. That is why I said maybe he should sort out issues with Mr. President personally.

  • GEJ, Abdullahi, Oduah and the missing verses

GEJ, Abdullahi, Oduah and the missing verses

Even days ahead of its unveiling, a new book by ace journalist and APC spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, is surely stirring the political waters already. Since teasers began to appear in Simon Kolawole’s TheCable last week, many can hardly wait anymore for tomorrow’s presentation in Abuja to grab copy and see what fresh angles “On A Platter of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria” brings to Segun Adeniyi’s earlier block-buster, “Against The Run of Play”.

Abdullahi is by no means a casual chronicler of the momentous events that shaped the Jonathan presidency; he was an insider having served as minister.

Perhaps the juiciest extract featured thus far by TheCable is the sensational claim by Stella Oduah that she lost her Aviation portfolio in the last dispensation due to the machinations of now embattled Diezani Allison-Madueke (then the powerful oil minister) in what seems to illuminate intensely the psycho-sexual tension within the Jonathan presidency. History reminds us that empires had risen and fallen over nothing more than lust or wounded love, and the remains of many great men were found near discarded skirt and camisole.

According to her, Diezani strongly believed leaks of her incurring a bill of whopping N10b jetting around “privately” emanated from the Aviation ministry. To exact a pound of flesh, Oduah alleges that Diezani funded sustained media spotlight on her own N250m bulletproof BMW cars scandal.

(A presidential panel headed by then NSA Sambo Dasuki had found the Aviation minister culpable in the shady $1.6m auto deal.)

“She thought I was the one who leaked the issue of private jet that put her into trouble with the House of Reps,” she says, adding “For her, it was payback time. Diezani was paying people to keep the story alive. At the same time, she was whispering in (the president’s) ears that he had to take action.”

But the real meat is in her next comment: “I knew all along that Diezani could not deal with having another female around who had the kind of access I had to the president.”

In what suggests more than official relationship with GEJ, Oduah was quoted by the author to be uninhibited enough to then pointedly demand of the president, “Did Diezani ask you to sack me?”, which he flatly denied.

Of course, in power circles then, it didn’t require much political intelligence to know there were actually five powerful women around the President. Aside Oduah and Diezani, the three others included First Lady (Mama Peace herself), the president’s ebony-black mom and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the “Coordinating Minister” and thick-set Amazon of the exchequer.

Romantics are likely to swoon over that and interpret as omen that GEJ was a “ladies’ man”.

This however makes Jonathan the stark opposite of his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari, said to be very, very “shy among women” (apology Information Minister Lai Mohammed). It then perhaps explains why women today enjoy less visibility around PMB’s wooden paternalism.

Responding to a question posed by a foreign journalist in faraway Germany following First Lady Aisha’s philippic against the presidency last year, Buhari hardly betrayed any emotion in dismissing her sense of political judgement outside what he considered her exclusive jurisdiction: “My wife belongs to the kitchen, the living room and the other room.”

Now, the puzzle is the definition of the “access” Oduah alludes to. Of course, everyone agrees that, both in and outside office, GEJ remains a perfect gentleman, with amazingly charming smile and killer athletic build capable of making the opposite sex drool, ordinarily.

So, could Oduah be referring to a “special pin no” from which other top female officials around Jonathan were restricted? The kind that conferred extraordinary privileges like having their proposals or memos approved with dizzying dispatch, without second look, let alone scrutiny.

The only conclusion that could drawn from Oduah’s revelation is that she and Diezani were both shamelessly locked in a cold war over long-suffering Madam Patience’s fine husband. Now, if a scavenger gets swollen-headed over the possession of a treasure found by accident, what’s expected of the original owner? Between the feuding princesses, every waking moment seemed spent agonizing over which plot the other might be hatching to monopolize the king’s attention.

In the circumstance, the puzzle then: what time did they really have left for official duties? We can, therefore, only continue to speculate and imagine the titanic battle poor Jonathan must have waged against falling into the sort of temptation Adam found irresistible in the biblical Garden of Aden.

When similarly charming Bill Clinton found himself in such tight corner as president at the Oval Office in Washington in the 90s, he succumbed to curvaceous Monica Lewinsky. The ghost of that affair with its salacious details would come back to exact a price that almost cost him the presidency. Though he survived narrowly, he would endure the shame for the rest of his life.

One of Clinton’s predecessors, John F Kennedy, was not that lucky. His hyperactive testosterone is believed to have been largely fueled by the side effect of a medication he took for Addison’s disease. Compulsive philanderer, aside the steady stream of paramours smuggled into the White House through the back door, among his other conquests were government secretaries and one Judith Campbell who incidentally happened to be linked to mafia boss Sam Giancana. This shred of evidence formed the basis of the enduring conspiracy theory that JFK’s assassination in 1963 involved the mob.

Elsewhere in Zimbabwe about the same time Clinton was being tempted, Robert Mugabe had also come under the bewitching spell of Grace inside the White House in Harare. Sashay after tantalizing sashay up and down the presidential office, the salivating ex-guerrilla apparently began to see his dashing secretary in a totally different light. Incentives then came to work longer hours in the office. The death of the much-beloved Ghanaian-born First Lady would finally open the door for Grace to be formally unveiled to the nation as the new presidential consort.

Following Mugabe’s ignominious fall from power last week, pundits may still be divided today over the political epitaph to engrave on his political tombstone. But regardless, there is consensus already that Grace’s vain ways contributed in no small measure in stoking public anger against the old comrade.

Well, the good news is that GEJ left office in 2015 through the electoral door, certainly not through any proven peccadilloes. Maybe, the ghost would have been finally laid to rest had the usually blunt Oduah, presently a senator representing Anambra, taken a step further to stave the ambiguity that incriminates. By either confirming or denying the long-standing rumour in some mischievous quarters that that “access” had, in fact, some amatory taste.

Or, since she is known to be single and available, did she ever, at any time, have a crush on the Prince Charming from Otuoke?

With the raft of grave charges still pending at the British court, we wager Diezani would, on her own, wish to be spared this sort of question, at least for now.

Gov. Bagudu pays condolence visit to emir

Gov. Abubakar Bagudu has paid a condolence  visit to the Emir of  Yauri, Dr Zayyanu Abdullahi,  over  the recent  boat mishap and outbreak of epidemic  in the  emirate.

The Chief  Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Mua’azu Dakingari,  said this in a  statement  on Wednesday  in Birnin Kebbi.

That scores of people were killed recently in a boat mishap and cholera outbreak in the emirate.

Dakingari quoted the governor as expressing concern over  the frequent  boat mishap and outbreak of epidemics in the state.

He, however, assured the emir that necessary measures would be  taken  to forestall further loss of lives  in the state.

Responding, Abdullahi  thanked the governor for the visit and attributed  the last boat mishap to non-adherence to marine safety rules by an operator who had earlier received a warning  of impending storm.

The emir  also urged the governor to look into the issue of  bad  roads in Yauri,  especially between  Koko  and  Yauri,  as well as the challenges of accessing potable water, electricity and medical services at the General Hospital.

Abdullahi further  expressed  concern  over  what he considered  the non-challant  attitude of the Nigerian Inland Water Ways Authority  to removing grasses, trees and stones in rivers, saying this was hindering  effective  water transportation.

  • Why North rejected Confab report, by Abdullahi

Why North rejected Confab report, by Abdullahi

Former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Professor Ango Abdullahi, yesterday shed light on why the North rejected the 2014 National Conference.

He said that the North turned down the report because delegates to the controversial conference convened by former President Goodluck Jonathan were not chosen through democratic process

Prof. Abdullahi who is also Chairman of the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) also asked resource control agitator, including former Akwa Ibom Governor, Arc. Victor Attah, to jettison the idea.

Resource control advocates, he said, should instead pursue resource management.

Prof. Abdullahi spoke yesterday at a national discourse as part of activities to mark the 90th birthday of elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark held at the National Conference Center, Abuja.

The former ABU Vice Chancellor however said that he spoke in his personal capacity and not as Chairman of NEF.

Attah who was keynote speaker at the discourse, spoke on the theme: “Restructuring, True Federalism and Resource Control: Panacea for Enduring Peace and Sustainable Development in Nigeria.”

Prof. Abdullahi noted that he had remained consistent that delegates to the 2014 national conference were not true representatives of the people.

He said, “I have attended the 1986/87 Babangida’s constitutional conference; I also attended the 1994/95 Abacha conference. I also attended the political reform conference of Obasanjo.

“The only conference I refused to attend was the Jonathan conference. I call it Jonathan conference. I do not hide my feelings on that for obvious reasons.

“All the conferences I attended were conferences where delegates were elected from their various constituencies, and they gave the feeling that they were representing people from their various constituencies. That was the different from Jonathan’s conference.”

He said that the Senator Femi Okuronunmu committee that was set up to organize the conference was told in all the places they visited that delegates to the conference should be elected.

“This was not done and that was why most of us declined to attend,” Abdullahi said.

Prof. Abdullahi explained that his decision to seek the change of resource control to resource management was because the country’s founding fathers judiciously managed the meager resources available to them for the development of the country up to the time of independent.

He said, “You will agree with me that during the time of our founding fathers, Azikiwe, Awolowo, Sarduna of Sokoto, they never had the volume of resources that is available for Nigeria today.

“But I can tell you that those our founding fathers managed the resources, these very scarce resources, to achieve so much for this country up till independent.

  • Senate has been vindicated on Magu’s case, says Abdullahi

Senate has been vindicated on Magu’s case, says Abdullahi

The Senate yesterday hailed  the leaked report of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, on the integrity of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as a vindication of its rejection of Magu’s nomination as substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Spokesman for the Red Chambers, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said in a statement in Abuja that the DSS report was even more damning that the one the agency sent to the Senate on Magu.

The Senate based its rejection of Magu on the report.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, in the statement, said: “Following several calls made to me today (yesterday) by journalists seeking my comments on the leaked report on Mr. Ibrahim Magu which was more damning than the one submitted to us, I can only say that myself and my colleagues have been vindicated.

“From that report which is now public, it is obvious the DG SSS even tried to give Magu soft landing in the report that was sent to the Senate. The recent report is messier and shows that our decision not to confirm his nomination was right.”

He asked Nigerians to “continue to have full confidence and trust in the Senate as it discharges its responsibilities according to the letter and spirit of the Nigerian constitution.”

Our tactics worked against MFM, says Abdullahi

Warri Wolves head coach Mansur Abdullahi has explained that their tactical approach in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match against Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) FC helped them secure a 1-1 draw in the match on Wednesday.

Abdullahi says he had  to use more defenders to stand a chance against a “very good team” which was comfortable with the ball.

“We came here with tactics, that at least, we should get a draw but unfortunately we missed a last minute goal opportunity to score the winning goal. I used more defenders having known that these guys (Warri Wolves) didn’t train in the last five days and the only way to play a team like MFM is to have more defenders that can work, one of my defenders who was subsituted did a lot of damage on Onuwa Chukwuka, he didn’t allow Onuwa to play his game and come near our defenders,” Abdullahi told SportingLife.

Abdullahi also expressed confident that the Seasiders will maintain its league status at the end of the season.

“After the end of week 38 we will surely escape relegation. We have picked a point away now and who says we can’t pick another point away. What we need to do as a team now is to ensure that we win all our remaining home matches to get 50 points if at all we can’t get point away before the end of the season,” he said.

“We want to assure the fans that this is the best decision we have taken for the team,” an insider at the club told our reporter.

“The management has promised to continue to back and support the technical crew to achieve their targets.”

Abdullahi expects Eagles at Russia 2018

Super Eagles midfielder Shehu Abdullahi says it will be a difficult task qualifying for the FIFA 2018 World Cup but he is confident coach Sunday Oliseh can lead them to get the ticket.

Abdullahi played at right back in the first leg Africa zone qualifier against Swaziland and did quite well especially in the return leg in Port-Harcourt.

Goals from Moses Simon and Efe Ambrose gave Nigeria a 2-0 aggregate win and a passage to the final round which starts next October.

“It’s going to be difficult. The big boys in Africa will be into the pots for the draws and I hope we get a good draw,”the AC Madeira midfielder said.

“I’m happy we are into the final leg of the draws and by God’s grace we shall make it to Russia. The team is coming together and we play better game by game.

“Coach Oliseh (Sunday) is a good coach and I’m sure with him we can make it. The team is young and we keep improving. It’s going to be hard but I trust the boys to come up big when it matters. Nigeria will be in Russia in 2018 by God’s grace,” he added. The 20 teams that have qualified for the third and final round of the qualifiers will be drawn into five, four-team groups. Teams will then play on a home and away basis with the winner of each group qualifying for Russia 2018.

The group stage of the qualifiers starts on October 3rd 2016 and will run until November 6, 2017 when the qualified teams are expected to emerge.
