Abdulsalami-led peace committee to deploy security technology in Anambra poll

The Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee said it will be deploying the newly inaugurated Election Information technology hub in its security and peace process in the forthcoming Anambra governorship poll.

Anambra will elect a new Governor on November 8.

The peace committee launched the Election Security Information Hub on Wednesday to enhance its intervention work.

The hub is expected to provide  verifiable data which the committee will be using to engage critical  stakeholders in security and electoral process.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, Gen. Martin Lurther (rtd), who represented Abubakar, said there must be peace in the country for credible elections.

He stressed that the strength of democracy is the credibility of elections and the confidence in the process.

He however noted that every election circle has continued to throw up gaps in security management.

The inaugurated hub, he said, is aimed to correct those identified gaps

“The strength of any democracy rests on the credibility of its election and the confidence of its citizens in the process. While Nigeria’s democracy continues to deepen, each election cycle reveals persistent security challenges, gaps in coordination, intelligence sharing, and weak response systems that allow local tensions to escalate into broader conflict.

He highlighted  the works of the Peace Committee since inception in 2014, which include facilitating the signing of peace accords, moral and civil commitments by political actors to conduct themselves peacefully before, during, and after elections and also intervening in other forms of violence, not related to elections, but retained the capacity to impact negatively on election outcomes.

He however added: “Yet, as we have learned, peace must be sustained by systems.

“The ESI has embodied that conviction that peace and credibility must be protected by structure, information, and cooperation.”

He also commended the European Union for its steadfast partnership under the EU-FDGN programme.

Shettima visits ailing Buhari, Abdulsalami in London

Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited ailing former President Muhammadu Buhari in London, it was learnt yesterday.

Sources said the vice president made the trip at the instance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who directed him to travel to London after his visit to Ethiopia.

It was learnt that the President’s directive arose from disturbing information about the former president’s state of health, although his aide Bashir Ahmad cleared the doubts about his “critical situation”.

It was gathered that part of why the vice president was directed to visit the former President was to ascertain his true state of health and ensure that whatever support was needed to enhance his health was provided.

Shettima, at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, attended the inauguration of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) in Addis Ababa last week. While on the trip, he explored Ethiopia’s agricultural revolutions and progress.

The vice president, who travelled on a Sunday night and arrived on Monday, according to sources, went straight to see the former President and spent hours with him. He delivered the President’s good wishes and prayed for his quick recovery.

He also went to see former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who is recuperating in London, after a medical treatment.

Gen. Abdulsalami, 83, handed over power from military to President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 at the outset of the return to civil rule.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, told The Nation when contacted that the vice president paid a private visit to the United Kingdom at the time, but could not explained what he went to do.

“It was an entirely private trip. I didn’t have access to his itinerary.”

When news broke on Buhari’s illness in London, his aide Ahmad, dispelled the impression that he was in a bad shape, saying the former President was on the path to full recovery.

“It is true that former President Buhari is unwell and is currently receiving medical attention. However, contrary to the exaggerated claims circulating in the media, he is stable and responding well to treatment, and we are optimistic about his full recovery,” Ahmad wrote on X.

    …Senator Tinubu is Nigeria’s number 1 Ambassador – Abdulsalami

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commended the country’s former leaders for their role in maintaining stability, particularly during the tense period following the removal of fuel subsidies.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, at his Uphill residence in Minna, she noted that Abdulsalami has consistently offered encouragement to President Bola Tinubu.

She emphasized that former leaders are the fathers of the nation and that current leaders should honour and respect them, clarifying that her visit was not politically motivated.

“I haven’t seen Daddy (Abdulsalami) and mummy for a long time. We did not make it here when we were campaigning and we feel it is rude for us to be talking to them on the phone. From where I am coming from it is not respectful. It is only right for a Nigerian who has a proper upbringing to come and greet them.

“General Abdulsalami is doing a lot for us trying to juggle and stabilise the government to an extent because with subsidy removal, people were getting a lot agitated but we thank them for the patience because if they do not believe that we can do it, it is not what we should be talking about now.

“Daddy (Abdulsalami) has always encouraged Mr President, so it is only right for us to come and visit him. When I went to Abeokuta, I went to see Baba even though he wasn’t there, but he said he would come and see me in Lagos. It is right for me to come here and greet them because they are the fathers of our nation, the patriarchs of this great nation, it is good for us to pay our respect. It is nothing political, it is just respect for me and Hajiya Shetimma. That is why we do not have any entourage like the Governors’ wives accompanying us. It is a private visit”, she stated.

Former Head of State,  General Abdulsalami Abubakar, appreciated the visit by the president’s Wife, applauding her for her interventions, which have placed Nigeria in a positive light to the world.

He described her as the number one Ambassador of Nigeria, commending her for carrying the wives of the Governors and the wives of former leaders of the nation along in her programmes and interventions.

“It is a pressure for the First Lady to come and visit us. She has been planning to come and pay her respects to us. I want to thank the First Lady for what she is doing and will continue to do especially for the young children, the motherless and the orphans. She has done very well during her first and second years in office, she has done the Nigerian fabric, and she has done a lot of things to bring out Nigeria and place a positive image of Nigeria to Nigerians and the world. She is Nigeria’s number one Ambassador.

“I want to thank her for what she has been doing. She has been carrying the Governors’ wives along, and in all the things you are doing, you are in consultation with the former First Ladies. I want to thank you for this visit. Through you, I want to say thank you to Mr President for allowing you to come and visit us”, he said.

The Chairman and the Convener of National Peace Committee (NPC), General Abdulsalami Abubakar and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, have said a national stakeholders’ meeting will hold today in Abuja to discuss how to tackle the multifaceted challenges facing the country.

In a statement yesterday, the committee’s leaders said last year’s general election was marked by a renewed sense of optimism and desire for change among Nigerians.

“Nigerians believed that the 2023 elections would usher in an administration that would swiftly address the nation’s lingering socio-economic challenges.

“The preparations for the elections heightened the hopes for positive socio-economic and political change. However, the outcome of the keenly contested presidential elections amplified the regional and ethnic cleavages that have underpinned our journey of nationhood,” the statement read.

“The demands made during the protests reflect the deep-seated challenges facing the country and the urgent need for responsive and effective governance.

“In response to this and in line with its mandate to mediate and intervene in electoral and non-electoral matters that impact on the peace and stability of Nigeria, the NPC has decided to convene a one-day town hall meeting with critical stakeholders to discuss frankly and explore the pathways to support the government in addressing and overcoming the current socio-political and economic situation facing the country,” the statement said.

The committee said the meeting will hold today at the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) Conference Centre in Abuja.

It said: “This meeting will provide a platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration, where the concerns and aspirations of the people can be discussed, and the outcomes are presented to the government.

Abdulsalami seeks action against economic hardship

A former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to find solution to the hunger in the land.

He said the hardship in the country was getting out of hand.

The ex-military leader noted that the increase in fuel price was making life hard for everyone and that the situation needed to be addressed as fast as possible.

According to him, giving palliatives to Nigerians without addressing the root cause of the hardship is not the answer to the problem.

Abdulsalami spoke when he hosted the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights (CDHR), led by Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi, to commemorate his birthday.

“The hardship in the land is getting out of control. Everybody is crying about this hardship. It seems to be getting out of control. People cannot afford three square meals. The issue of transportation, the hike in fuel price, the hike in school fees for children and the lack of funds in everybody’s pocket are making life difficult for everybody.

“We will continue to encourage the government to introduce measures to soften the hardship. The federal, states, and local governments should see how they can cushion this economic hardship,” he.

The former Head of State said he and other leaders had continually made recommendations to the Federal Government on how to get out of the current economic hardship.

He hoped the government would examine the recommendations and implement them.

“I will like to intimate you that in some of the proposals we have given to government on another platform. We have emphasised that giving palliatives is not the answer to the high prices of food and other items in the country.

“There is need for government to flood and saturate the communities with food. Let the government buy food and sell it at reduced prices to the people so that the people will try to buy some of these food items, depending on their pockets/income.”

“We have passed these recommendations to the government. We hope they will implement it,” Abdulsalami said.

The former military leader urged those proposing for the #EndBadGovernance protest on October 1 to conduct it peacefully and prevent it from becoming a platform for carnage, theft, and criminalities.

“If at all we are going to demonstrate, let us know this is why we are demonstrating. Let us not inflict hardship on fellow Nigerians.

“I also call on the government to listen to the demonstrators because you cannot beat a child and prevent it from crying.”

The leader of the delegation, Abdullahi Jabi, drew the attention of the former Head of State to the prevailing hunger in the land.

The CDHR leader urged him to prevail on the Federal Government to find urgent solution to the problem.

He congratulated the elder statesman on his birthday, praying God to give him long life and good health.
