Counsel to Ogunlewe, the first accused in the matter, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN),  leading other counsel  had approached the court earlier seeking to quash the charges against the first accused, Senator Ogunlewe, on the grounds that the charges are bad for misjoinder of offences,  misjoinder of offenders and for duplicity; that the proof of evidence produced by the complainant does not link the first accused with the aforesaid counts nor does it disclose any prima facie against the first accused person; and that the consent of the Attorney General of Ogun State/Law officer was not obtained as required by law before filing the charge.

At the resumed hearing of the matter, after the adoption of the written addresses made by parties, Justice Majekodunmi delivered a ruling on the application before the court in favour of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The court conceded to their application and adjourned the case to March 8 and 9, 2017 for the commencement of trial.

It would be recalled that the trio of Senator Adesewe Ogunlewe, former Works and Housing Minister and Pro-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAB Prof. Olusola Oyewole, the Vice Chancellor and Mr. Moses Olusola Ilesanmi were arraigned on Friday, November 25, 2016 on an 18 -count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, obtaining money by false pretence and abuse of office.

Obasanjo to Jonathan: We have a lot of experience to share

…As GEJ pays him secret visit in Ibogun

Former President Goodluck Jonathan was on Friday in Ibogun village, Ogun State, home of ex – President Olusegun Obasanjo for  a surprise visit to him.
Jonathan who arrived Obasanjo’s home around 12 noon, was accompanied by his former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki and three other close aides and entered a closed door meeting with his host.
The visit lasted about an hour, The Nation learnt and Jonathan declined to disclose to journalists why he was in Ibogun, but merely said the visit was a “private one.”
Jonathan who stole into Ibogun village in Ifo Local Government Area of the state, later told Obasanjo that he and General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) had initially planned to pay him a visit during the yuletide but they could not make it because of some unforeseen events that prevented them.
The former president who explained his mission to Obasanjo’s home through Kabiru Turaki, added that he had decided to come in fulfilment of the earlier planned Christmas visit but rued that it was now without IBB.
He lauded Obasanjo who has since quit partisan politics to become an elder statesman for the warm reception accorded him and entourage.
Obasanjo who commended Jonathan for having the time to visit him since leaving office, said that both of them now have residual responsibilities in the country as past leaders that bowed out of power gracefully.
The former Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also tactically told his chief guest he went into the office of the President with “have little or no experience” but has now amassed more wisdom and experience about leadership after leaving office.
Obasanjo said:”the first point I want to make is to thank you very sincerely and most sincerely for taking it upon yourself to pay us a visit at this point in time and at this location.  Secondly, since you left office, you hardly have time to sit down and relax like you have been able to do today and I hope, I sincerely hope and pray for more such relaxed situation where we can reminiscence situations of the past that we have been through in this country and we can also look at what the future portends.
“When leaders come, they have little or no experience. When they have to go is when they have really amassed a lot of experience, where they have wisdom, their  experience will be in high demand.  Those like you and me who have the grace of God to bow out gracefully if there is now what I call constitutional office we have residual responsibilities for Nigeria.
“I believe that not only Nigeria, West Africa and Africa and indeed the world will continue to tap into our experiences,   our wisdom and I hope and pray that when the call is made to you will be more than ready to put your experience, the lessons you have learnt into the service of this country, for African and indeed for humanity in general.
” I have said to you before and I will say again that there are plenty of opportunities out there, within the country, within West Africa, within African and indeed in the larger world where people will want you to make contributions.
” I believe that you are resting now and when you have fully rested and you will be hearing from me because I have this opportunity to be around the world and if I mention your name in dispatch…. I thank you sincerely that you have received us as we are in this village to prove to you that we are in a typical village, I was telling you that your village is better than mine.
“I want to say that we have it, Nigeria is a good country and we must never be tired of lifting the country up to the height that God has created it to be and God did not make a mistake when he put all of us together and if He doesn’t want us to be together no power in the world will have made us come together.
“My regards to everybody at home, especially your wife, please tell her that my wife sends her regards and I hope sooner or later we will be on your part of the world to enjoy the atmosphere together.  I want to thank you on behalf of everyone here on this village.”

Amosun urges aides to support ongoing projects

Governor Ibikunle Amosun on Monday charged political appointees to be committed to his administration’s determination to complete all ongoing projects before May 29, 2019.

The Governor said that the resolve to complete the ongoing projects does not affect his commitment to initiate new ones that would be beneficial to the people.

Amosun gave the charge in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during the swearing-in of the trio of Mr Abayomi Sobande, Chief Tolu Odebiyi and Mrs Adepeju Adebajo as the new Head of Service, Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Agriculture respectively.

According to him, the new appointees were chosen on the basis of their qualifications and the need to further meet the five cardinal programmes of his administration.

Amosun, therefore, urged them to see their appointments as means of uniting the people and justify the huge trust reposed in them to build a lasting legacy for the state.

He said, “you are all coming to join the state executive council at a time when your vast knowledge will be needed to add value and bring dividends of democracy to the good people of Ogun state.

“No doubt, our administration is made up of people who have distinguished themselves in their various fields. Your coming will be an addition to such a high calibre of people.

“On this note, it is important that all appointees recognise that their new appointment is a product of the painstaking process of sifting through a crop of many eminently qualified candidates. This should not be taken for granted. Your appointment demands that you display a higher level of responsibility and dedication to duty.”

Amosun, however, appealed to civil servants and other political office holders to cooperate with the new appointees, saying “all distractions that will make them deviate from the arduous task should be avoided.

War against blindness targets 1m Nigerians – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday revealed that his war against blindness in the next 12 months, is targetted at reaching out to one million Nigerians who are suffering from various degrees of eye problems.

Obasanjo who made this known in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, as part of preparation for this year’s edition of his annual free eye health care, said over 25,000 persons have benefited from the free eye treatment, including surgeries since it began seven years ago.

The ex-President who spoke through the Chief Operating Officer of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF) programmes, Dr. Olalekan Makinde, said he extending the service to the nation’s six geo – political zones.

This was contained in a statement by Obasanjo’s media aide, Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi, and made available to The Nation.

“Since the programmes began in Abeokuta, we have  about 250,000 on our records as beneficiaries of the free drugs, glasses but now, we are extending our scope to cover all the six geopolitical zones.

“The programme is under the aegis of the ‘Blindness Prevention Initiatives’ is part of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF) programmes and it is in its 7th edition and expected to be a nationwide exercise soon.

“This is the 7th edition, but this year’s edition is unique in the sense that henceforth the programme will be a nationwide exercise in all the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, and His Excellency, President Olusegun Obasanjo has given a target to reach one million Nigerians in the next one year for those who are suffering from various degree of eye problems.

“In the past editions, we had concentrated the programme only in Abeokuta, with about 250,000 on our records as beneficiaries of the free drugs, glasses and surgeries. But, now, we are extending our scope to cover all the six geopolitical zones,” he stated.

He urged Ogun  residents to tap into this programme by turning up between Thursday and Saturday, October 20/22 for the screening.

“We want to create  an avenue to identify those whose cases would require surgery and those who only need drugs to correct their cases. The free surgery will now come up between 24/25 for those to be short-listed,” he added.

The Foundation COO also hinted that exercise has been supported by the Bank of Industry (BoI) imploring other corporate bodies, philanthropists and groups to support the initiative, adding that the former president will be present on Thursday to personally receive those with    any form of eye defections.

  • We’ve not reached promised land yet at 56 – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has lamented the stunted and impaired development of Nigeria, 56 years after attaining a state nationhood.
Obasanjo said Nigeria is not yet where it ought to be at 56 but expressed the hope that the sundry challenges bogging the country down would be surmounted.
He spoke on Saturday during a lecture organised by the Youth Fellowship of the Owu Baptist Church, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, as part of the church’s activities to mark Nigeria’s Independence anniversary.
The elder stateman said leaders and followers, should “accept responsibility” for the fate of the country and “stop passing the bulk.”
“Our development is impaired, it is not what it ought to be but we must get it right. We must all accept responsibility, we must stop passing the bulk.”
Delivering his lecture on the topic: “Nigeria Development for Nigerians by Nigerians,” he declared that the development of the country must not be left with Nigerians alone but should also include foreign investors and friends of Nigeria.
According to him, those interested in assisting the country in its developmental efforts must also be encouraged to help it.
Obasanjo identified unemployment of educated Nigerians as one of the major factors threatening the peace of the country.
He also identified peace and security, education, food, sanitation, shelter as well as transportation as some of the ingredients for measuring development.
The former Chairman, Board of Trustess of the PDP recalled that when he completed his secondary school education at the Baptist Boys High School (BBHS), Abeokuta, he was offered jobs by five different establishments, including the United Africa Company (UAC) and Moore Plantation, Ibadan but lamented that a different situation prevailed today in Nigeria.
He also recalled during an interractive session how the famous industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, few years ago, told him that six PHD holders were among applicants who applied to become truck drivers in his company due to the unemployment situation in the country.
“Unemployment is a major problem in the country today and if we don’t take care, it will consume all of us, in fact, the rising unemployment is a time bomb.”
“The high rate of unemployment is responsible for youth restiveness in the country. The situation should be tackled with all the seriousness it deserves before it get out of hand.
“There is no other way we can develop except, engaging in agriculture business, it is the only business that can generate the number of employment we need.
“That is why we have to take it (Agriculture business) as a key of our development else the many educated Nigerians who have no job are like time bomb, sooner than later, it will explode,” Obasanjo said.
Obasanjo challenged the church to pay attention to both the spiritual as well as the physical well being of their congregations.
He noted that the church’s attention appeared to be focused only on the spiritual aspect of the congregations, explaining that he had seen the recession buffetting the country two yeas ago following the recklessness of the immediate past administration regarding the country’s resources.
He said his warnings and advice were largely ignored but concluded, Nigerians “cannot continue lamenting.”

  • Demolished shrine: Ogun Pastor recounts experience

Demolished shrine: Ogun Pastor recounts experience

A Pastor, Prince Adewale Fagbire,  who was alleged to have been struck dumb and motionless when he invaded his community shrine at Ketu – Ayetoro in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun state while pulling it down, has told The Nation that though the town’s traditionalists assaulted him with “charms and other fetish objects,” but was not “harmed” at all.
Fagbire, who is a Pastor at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Ayetoro area, said he actually entered the shrine, evacuated all the fetish items that were kept there and also took a position beside the entrance to it in quietness as instructed by God.
Prince Fagbire, son of the past Alaye of Ayetoro, Oba Taiwo Fagbire, who joined his ancestors in 1981 after his 20year reign in the agrarian community, said his late father and monarch, used to take him to the said shrine occasionally when he was alive.
Narrating his experience to The Nation and a handful of reporters, at the Office of the  Chairman, Ogun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Tunde Akin – Akinsanya, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Fagbire said he elected to “remain calm and mute” during the assault and interrogation at the shrine by the traditionalists and some villagers.
Speaking in the presence of over a dozen of Christian leaders from CAN and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Ogun State, said God instructed him to stay calm and not utter a word at the shrine.
The father of two noted that his not talking or not uttering a word on the site of the shrine had nothing to with his being beaten with “charms and fetish objects” by the traditionalists as what they did had no physical or spiritual effects on him.
According to him, it was also not true as reported in some section of the media that the priests and custodians of the shrine upon the intervention of the Alaye of Ayetoro, Oba Abdulaziz Adelakun,  treated or healed him before he  could regain his consciousness.
“I was conscious, physically and mentally sound, during and after the incident because God was already with me. I followed the instruction of the LORD to enter the shrine and packed all the items there away. I followed God’s instruction to be quiet aa instructed by God.
“God told me to go there (the shrine), create a scene, step aside and watch the film (the unfolding events). They struck me with charms and nothing happened to me. They know the truth, nobody treated me and I spoke when I got to the Palace of the Oba,” he said.
Our Correspondence gathered that although the traditionalists demanded N300,000 from a church in the community where Fagbire had once preached and also N200,000 from the pastor’s family to perform sacrifices to appease the gods for his alleged sacrilege but nothing was given to them eventually.
The church in the community incurred the wrath of the traditionalists and was attacked following the allegation that it instigated Prince Fagbire to carry out the alleged sacrilege on the shrine.

The peaceful campus of the institution and the adjoining communities had slipped into chaos last Thursday when a peaceful protest by the students turned violent.

At least five persons – two students and three police officers, were said to have been injured when a detachment of policemen drafted to contain the highly incensed students, clashed with them.

For over five hours, the students took to the Alabata road and Abeokuta – Ibadan road and helped by people suspected to be street urchins and miscreants, they set ablaze nine vehicles, vandalized scores of others in their trail.

The church where FUNAAB Vice – Chancellor, Prof Olusola Oyewole is the founder and General Overseer, and located few metres away from the Headquarters of the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force(NPF), was not spared of the students’ wrath.

The church’s window panes, doors and properties were vandalized. Worshippers’ and visitors’ vehicles packed at the premises of the church were also damaged.

On Friday, the Police arraigned 50 persons in connection with the chaos and destruction. While 43 of the accused persons were charged in suit number, MA/429c/2016, the other seven were charged in a separate case with charge number, MA/430c/2016.

But the offences for which they were all arraigned however remained the same.

The Students who were ferried to the court in many Police vehicles were charged with arson, taking part in an unlawful assembly, riot and malicious damage of properties including a Toyota Camry Saloon Car belonging to one Assistant Superintendent of Police,  Ariyo Adejuwon.

They were also accused of “willfully and unlawfully set fire to Osiele Police Station, property of Nigeria Police Force” and “willfully and unlawfully destroyed or damaged louvers property of Divine Height Bible Church Kotopo, Abeokuta.”

  • Ogun LP sues OGSIEC over exclusion from LGs poll

… LP is misrepresenting facts, we excluded nobody or party, says OGSIEC

Ogun State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has  instituted a court action against the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) for allegedly denying it recognition in the forthcoming Local Governments (LGs) elections slated for October 8.

In the suit no: NI/215/2016 filed before a state High Court sitting in Abeokuta, LP seeking an order, restraining OGSIEC and its chairperson, Alhaja Risikat Ogunfemi from conducting the planned LGs  poll.

Also joined in the suit are the Executive Governor of Ogun state and the Attorney – General and Commissioner of Justice, Ogun  State.

The Acting State chairman of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, who disclosed this to reporters in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during a press briefing.

In the originating summons deposed to by LP’s Acting State Chairman,  Mr Abayomi Arabambi, Olaposi Oginni (State Secretary) and  Abdul-Sabur Aroyeun, they prayed the court to declare that the date for the collection and submission of political party Form CF 001 and CF 002 be extended in other to accommodate their candidates.

LP also want the court to determine whether or not, by section 221 relevant sections of Ogun state and the Election Time Table, the forthcoming local government election slated for 8th October can validly hold without given form to all interested parties.

But reacting, an OGSIEC Commissioner, Mr Mutiu Agboke, said they have documentary evidence to shows that the electoral body has not excluded any political party from participating in the scheduled LGs elections.

According to Agboke, the Labour party has only given a misrepresentation of facts to the public.

“We realised that there are internal issues within three political parties, Mega People’s Party, People’s Democratic Party and Labour Party.

“The others have been able to resolve their issues except Labour. One Olufemi Arabambi and another Segun Oloyede came to collect election materials.

“None came back except Arabambi who came for the guidelines after we were assured that they have resolved their issues.

“Later, Oleyede came for the bio-data form proving to be the authentic Secretary and said that they have resolved.

Both are on record at the Commission, we have both of them. One getting the guidelines and the other getting the bio-data.

“But we have not seen Arabambi since then so we assumed that they have actually resolved their issues,” Agboke said.

  • Why we embarked on strike – LUTH nurses

Why we embarked on strike – LUTH nurses

There seem to be no end soon for a truce between the striking nurses at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the management of the institution.
At a meeting on Wednesday called by the State chapter of the Nigerian Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) with the striking nurses, the State NANNM Chairman, Comrade Olurotimi Awojide said he has been reliably informed that the LUTH management may not be able to hold any meeting with the executives of Lagos NANNM because the Chief Medical Director (CMD) Prof Chris Bode and some of the hospital’s top management officials have travelled.
Comrade Awojide said the hospital should watch it because some other members of the association are watching with keen interest what is unfolding at LUTH, hence the Psychiatry Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta has commenced on a strike for similar demands.
He explained that LUTH management should understand the nifty gritty of Civil Service Commission, especially as it relates with engagement/employment and promotion.
Comrade Awojide said it is an embarrassment for a  54 year old tertiary institution not to have regular supply of water and light. “These are very important to any hospital environment. And you know the importance of water in prevention of spread of infections, as witnessed during the Ebola outbreak. It is highly important for the safety of patient and staff, especially nurses. Nurses use their personal money to purchase consumables such as gloves, syringes o attend to patients, either because they are not enough or totally unavailable. That is how bad the whole system is, here at LUTH. Allowances for nurses are not paid, for instance, teaching allowance and uniform allowance. The annoying part is that professionals that are not captured or entitled when the circular was being presented are being paid, thereby robbing legitimate professionals like nurses from being paid, for example administrative officer collecting teaching allowance. We are not asking the management to stop that, but to give us our legitimate due.”
On the issue of promotion of nurses without First degree, as maintained by the hospital, Comrade Awojide explained, “Nurses that are at Assistant Chief Nursing officer post awaiting promotion to the position of Chief Nursing officer are already on CONHESS 12, and LUTH management is still ‘promoting’ them to CONHESS 12, By saying CONHESS 13 is for Assistant Director. That is wrong. We gave the Management the necessary papers/document to support what is right and for simpler understanding, to no avail. Chief Nursing Officer is on CONHESS 13, the Directorate cadre starts from CONHESS 14 and above. So promotion starts from CONHESS 12 to 13 as Chief Nursing officer. That is what obtains among other federal health hospitals, so why should LUTH be any different? We brought copies of promotion letters from other hospitals to convince the LUTH management to no avail.
“In the Scheme of Service for Civil service of the Federation, when nurses are employed, they start on Level 7 which is equivalent to CONHESS 6 with their single qualification. Followed by Nursing Sister Grade level 6, CONHESS 7, Senior Nursing Sister Grade level 9, CONHESS 8, Senior principal Nursing officer on Grade Level 10 CONHESS 9. There is nothing like Grade 11. Once on Grace 10, one moves to Level 12. We were at Industrial High Court on Skipping and CONHESS and we won. The Court wrote the Ministry of Health that the Skipping is legal, that it means automatic moving from 10 to 12. The equivalent of 11 under CONHESS is CONHESS 10. Meaning that nurses will move from CONHESS 9 to 11.”
He added, “That will translate to Principal Nursing officer 1, Assistant Chief Nursing officer will now be on CONHESS 12, Chief Nursing officer will now be CONHESS 13, then Assistant Director, Deputy Director and the Director. That is the structure. So now, instead of promoting Assistant Chief Nursing Officer CONHESS 12 to Chief Nursing officer CONHESS 13, LUTH management is claiming that CONHESS 13 is for Assistant Director, not taking note of the skipping Grade level which is CONHESS 11. Head of Service has also written the hospital. In civil service, once an HND holder gets to Level 14, you stagnate. It is only Degree holders that can get to Level 15 upwards. Nurses are not asking to be promoted to level 14 without First Degree, we are saying CONHESS 13 is not for Assistant Director but for Chief Nursing Officer. It is when we want to go beyond Level 14, CONHESS 13 that First Degree is required. Our members should not be denied of their legitimate right. Our members that are interested in moving up beyond Level 14 are already pursuing First Degree. The LUTH Management should not ascribe to our regulatory body- The Nursing and Midwifery Council what it does not say, please.”
