  • Kalu lauds Ugwuanyi’s respect for Buhari, other leaders

…Says Gov. is a very close friend

Former Governor of Abia State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for the respect he has continued to accord President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders in the country, irrespective of political affiliations.

Addressing newsmen after paying a visit to Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu,  Kalu expressed delight at the friendship the governor has maintained with political leaders across the board, stressing that such uncommon leadership style has brought peace and development to Enugu State.

The APC chieftain said Ugwuanyi is “a very close friend of mine and we are family” irrespective of the fact that they are in different political parties, saying: “I am in very good terms with the Governor of Enugu State, even before he became a governor”.

Kalu disclosed that President Buhari also takes Ugwuanyi as a family, declaring that “we cannot quarrel with anybody who is not quarreling with us”.

According to him, “I look at him (Ugwuanyi) as a family member. So, I don’t expect him to be in the same political party with me. He is of PDP and I am of APC but we maintain the friendship. It is across the board”.

The former governor explained that he was at the Enugu Government House to see the governor on a routine visit, stating that “on many occasions, I pass through here and I also tell the President and Commander-in-Chief that I am going to him”.

He stressed: “There is no way I can come to Enugu without passing through here, more over he (Ugwuanyi) is a very close friend of mine”.

His words: “This is like a home to all Igbos. This is the headquarters of Igbo land. And I am in very good terms with the governor, not just because he is a governor. You know MV Neya and MV Sophia Maria; when he was Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Marine Transport, he commissioned them in Malaysia.

“So, people should stop playing little politics of tribe. We also go to the same church. He is a Catholic and I am a Catholic. I wish him well; I hope he is also wishing President Buhari well,” he said

  • CAF team inspect Enyimba stadium ahead of international competitions

A delegation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ]have visited Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State where they inspected the readiness of the newly installed artificial turf and other facilities at the refurbished Enyimba International Football Club’s Stadium as the club sets to play its remaining CAF and other league games at their home ground.

Recall that for about two years, Enyimba Int’l FC have been playing their local and international competitions outside their home turf due to the ongoing repair work being carried out by the state government at the stadium, but with the completion of work, it is expected that the Aba darling team would return to enjoy the support of the fans who have missed them over the years.

Since the state announced the completion of work in the stadium, Aba residents and Enyimba supporters are expecting that the city would host the last Group-C match of the CAF Confederation Cup between Enyimba and CARA Brazzaville of Congo scheduled for Wednesday 29th August 24, 2018.

Speaking to newsmen after the inspection, the Chairman of Enyimba, Felix Anyasi Agwu said he is delighted with what that is already in place and stressed that he is hopeful that CAF will give their approval as according to him, it is difficult for anyone not to be impressed with the facilities already in place at the stadium.

He said: “It is difficult for me to really define what their true assessment should be. I believe the inspectors from CAF are impressed with work done so far. They will report it to CAF and it will be left for CAF to have the final say. I don’t know what they will write in their reports or what is in their minds in terms of their true impression. Be that as it may, I think it is difficult for anyone to come here without been impressed with the facilities here.

“So, in my opinion I think they have seen the level of work, they will write their reports and we have to wait for that we shouldn’t be in a hurry for that. We will keep praying that CAF will give us their final approval for that particular match that we want to play here in few days time. All the facilities are ready. All we are doing as they have seen is putting finishing touches on things. They have seen it all and they know that if they give us approval, the match next week will be played here.

“Between today and tomorrow almost all the areas would have being in place. They went through a lot today. They have seen the dressing room, the toilet, the doping room, match commissioner’s room, the media stand, the referees’ room, and the flood lights which they said they want to make sure they are on obviously in that area work is still on there and they saw the engineers working on it.

“Aside the world standard pitch, other facilities must be available and to some extent, I can say it is 98 percent ready and if something is ready at that percent and you still have time to get it at the required 100 percent then, it must be done because it must be 100 percent ready.

“Everything that is needed was painstakingly looked at.  I cannot speak for CAF because I am not CAF, but I am hopeful, this is our stadium and I will always that we are encouraged by CAF since we have come so far. The inspector just left now and we are hoping by tomorrow we might get some answers from CAF. Enyimba will play its match on the 29th. This is a CAF competition and the dates have never changed.

“The government has done a lot here and the opening of the stadium is left is their hands, but to me the real opening in football sense is if we get approval to play the match on Wednesday. That does not take away any other plan from the government who are the custodian.”

Meanwhile, Aba fans would on Sunday (tomorrow) have the opportunity to watch Ex- ENYIMBA FC players play against Ex-Super Eagles players at the stadium.

According to sources, stars like Bob Osim, Emeka Nwana (Ayaya), Ogbonaya Okemiri, Obinna Nwaneri, Ndidi Anumudu, Uga Opara, Chidozie Johnson, Muri Ogunbiyi and among other Enyimba players are expected to play against ex super eagles team that would comprise of Pastor Taribo West, Ike Shorumu, Victor Agali, Victor Ikpeba, Uche Okechukwu (Gentle Giant), Daniel Amokachi (The Bull), Samson Siasia, Mutiu Adepoju

The former ASEPA boss said that he is coming out after many visits by different groups asking him to come out and lend a helping hand before they die of bad and misfit leaders who have been misrepresenting them for years.

He said, “Several groups came to me asking me to come out and save them from misrule and I told them that I am not interested but they kept coming for over three times which made me to consult before accepting their request”.

Apugo continued, “I am not going there to make money as I have what I am doing which has been taking my time, everybody knows that I run a football academy which has not been easy, so going to the House of Representatives is to serve my people”.

“Those who have been there before have always said that there is no money there and yet they want to return for a second and third term, if there is nothing there why are they so bent on going back for another term”.

Apugo who expressed surprise at the large turnout of people for his declaration said, “We have been unlucky with those who had gone to the green chamber before me, as they end up pocketing monies meant for constituency projects”.

He said, “They use the monies to build mansions that their great grandchildren will not fully accommodate or establishing businesses outside our state, for these we are saying enough is enough”,

“It is against this background that I am offering myself to serve our people at the House of Representatives for the good people of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency, as their plight gives me concern”.

Apugo noted that he is qualified to represent his people in all aspects including equity, saying that there are five state constituencies in Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency and only his zone Umuahia East has never been to the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

He said, “This is why it has become necessary that all lovers of peace, justice, equity and fairness should support my ambition so that representing our people would have gone round the five state constituencies in our area”.

  • Agony of eroded community

The people of Ngodo community in Umuahia South council area of Abia State have cried to both the state and federal governments to come to their aid before they are wiped out by threatening erosion that has been ravaging them for years.

They said over 10 houses have been swept off by erosion and many rendered homeless in three villages in their community, while many other buildings in the villages are currently on the verge of collapse.

It could be observed that with the heavy rainfall this year, many parts of Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State are already seriously threatened by erosion.

The affected communities are Umuekwea, Umuokwasa and Umunwanwa villages under Ngodo autonomous community, and some of the affected structures include commercial buildings, ancestral homes and residential buildings, farmlands are not spared so long as they in the way of the rampaging erosions.

It is a common sight to behold families within the area in question abandoning their homes whenever it rained because their homes lay within gully erosion sites that were up to 100 feet deep, while children and domestic animals are always missing after any heavy down pour in the area.

The Nation investigations gathered that in many communities, the floods were constantly creating gully erosion sites in areas that hitherto did not have such problems and sometimes pulled down structures and this had left fear in the lives of those residing close to the sites.

The residents revealed that the large number of erosion sites seen in many communities started as small holes and later developed into big ones, simply because no one took care when they complained, stressing that it would not have been this bad if those in authority had come to their aid on time.

Ngodo is one of the communities in Umuahia South that sits in the midst of age-long gully that threatens its existence every rainy season and there are other such erosion ravaged communities across the state neglected by successive administrations.

It is a well-known fact that the magnitude of the erosion sites across the state are beyond the scope of the state government and they are calling on federal government and donor agencies to come to their aid before their homes and farm lands are eaten away by erosion.

The community’s efforts in the past at checking the menace did not address the problem.

Speaking with The Nation, the pioneer Catholic priest from the area, Rev. Fr. Christian Uche Anokwuru has identified the soil texture and traced the history of the gully erosion sites to the abandoned NDDC Umuwanwa road which was awarded over a decade ago.

Fr. Anokwuru explained that because of the abandoning of the road project the erosion expanded through gully erosion coming from the road gave birth to the various gullies created within Ngodo autonomous community.

The cleric said, “We are farmers in Ngodo autonomous community, and today we can’t access the road to sell our produce, we have also lost our streams, we no longer have access to potable water again because the erosion have taken the streams away”.

“Our sources of water supply are no longer there, we go to far communities to get water, you can also see the distance this place is from the town, people die out of emergency situations because they are sick and before they could find a vehicle that can take them to the hospital in the town, they run into complications and people die on the way”.

“We are calling on NDDC, Ecological Fund Office to help us, this problem can be salvaged; people have run to their maternal homes, Ngodo is no longer a safe place, we have no government presence here.

“Our people were happy when the Bishop of Umuahia diocese approved the establishment of a monastery, unfortunately those in the monastery have left to a place known as Ugwueke in Bende Local Government Area because they can’t access their homes”

“The Bishop of Umuahia diocese approved the building to be used as a clinic to help the people, but incidentally, there is no road to access the place, though the gully erosion did not take us by surprise as we have been doing a lot to take care of the erosion to no avail”.

Despite all our efforts, the gullys are just beyond what my community can handle. We have been doing community fund raising program to help ourselves but the situation at hand now is beyond the capacity of the community”.

In his own reaction, the traditional ruler of Ngodo autonomous community, His Royal Highness Eze Stephen Ihuoma said the gully erosion sites have brought untold hardship on his community as farm lands are being destroyed.

Eze Ihuoma noted that most of their roads have been cut off especially the only one leading to Ngodo, stressing that his people have been cut off from their kindred from other communities, He said, “We are no longer aware of what is happening within and around us, which is not good for any community in this modern time”.

He pointed out that though there were some palliative measure the member representing Umuahia/Ikwuano Federal Constituency Hon. Sam Onuigbo did on the sites which could not withstand the pressure from the gully erosion and the money injected into the palliative carried out on the sites was a waste.

The monarch said the gullies are beyond the capacity of the community and the state government and called on the federal government through ecological fund office to come to their aids.

A community leader who identified himself as Chief Francis Achilefu who also serves as the works Chairman Ngodo autonomous community said community members have fled to their maternal homes to take refuge as there are no access roads to their farms, churches as the gully erosion sites have made rural dwellers to desert their homes.

It is quite sad that someone who is on essential duty who leaves his family every day to attend to attend to citizen of this country can be treated the way things our doctor has been treated

“The primary duty of government everywhere in the world is safety of lives and property, therefore I want to ask that your complaint is received, the governor will hear, you go back to your place of work as a drastic action would be taken to ensure an unconditional release of this our doctor.

“What happened is very unfortunate and the government is not happy about that. That is why everything the government is doing is to make sure that the state is safe for everybody, both those who are working and those who are doing business in Abia state. I want to assure you that our brother will be released soonest.

“As soon as I leave here, I will reach out to the wife of the doctor who the kidnappers have opened communication with and see how to key into the discussion to ensure the immediate release of this our brother and colleague.”

  • I am standing by President Buhari – Kalu

Despite the ongoing gale of defection in the All Progressives Congress (APC) by chieftains of the party, former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has said that nothing will make him to change his mind over his support for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that reports earlier in the week alleged that Kalu was planning to defect to the PDP after the senate President Bukola Saraki and other legislators left the APC.

However, Kalu at a meeting with stakeholders and executive members of the party from wards to state levels including major stakeholders of the party in the state held at his Camp Neya in Igbere, Bende local government area said that he was going nowhere but to stay in APC and ensure that Buhari was re-elected come 2019.

According to him, APC under President Buhari in three years has been able to do what then PDP led government could not do within the sixteen years that they were in power.

The former governor who recalled how impassible the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha and Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt were under the PDP and how he tried all his best to draw the attention of the PDP led government to the ugly state of the road which serves as major expressways connecting the southeast states and other parts of the country said that the story is no longer the same under the Buhari APC led government and vowed that APC in the state in order to recompense Buhari for his numerous works in the southeast which the state has benefitted, would ensure that he (Buhari) gets 75percent vote cast in the state come 2019 presidential election.

Kalu while using the opportunity to disclosed that the state government is taking glory over some of the federal government instituted projects in the state assured Abians that the party would soon come out with the list of federal government sponsored projects including the ongoing school feeding of pupils in primary schools, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads among other federal government completed and ongoing projects across the state.

Read Also: I am not ready to dump APC – Kalu

The APC chieftain assuring Abians and party members that the era of PDP rigging in Abia State is gone said that while they (APC) would not rig to win election in 2019, added that they won’t allow the PDP or any other party in the state to rig APC out.

“We will soon draw a list of some of the completed and ongoing projects in Aba and Umuahia and every other parts of the state being executed by the federal government through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and other arms of government which the Abia State government is taking glory for.

“President Buhari has done more than PDP did in 16years. For the first time after 16years of PDP rulership, the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha and Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt are receiving attention of the federal government. The Niger Bridge is about 60percent completion. Are we talking about the federal government school feeding and the numerous works that NDDC is doing in the state which the state government is taking glory of doing?

“We will soon list the projects that the federal government is doing in the state so that the people will be better informed and be in a better position to make proper decision in 2019. How can a government that has not been able to pay workers’ salaries and pensioners their gratuity and other entitlements be taking glory of what they didn’t do?

“The era of intimidation of the opposition or rigging in the state is gone. APC is ready to march PDP in any way and in whatever form.
