Abia Rep dismisses LP’s suspension, reaffirms support for Otti

The member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Amobi Ogah, has dismissed his recent suspension by the Labour Party as inconsequential.

He said it will not deter his allegiance to Abia Governor Alex Otti.

Ogah, one of six prominent members suspended by the party over alleged anti-party activities, described the move as politically motivated and lacking substance.

He maintained that his focus remains on delivering on his legislative responsibilities and backing the progressive leadership in Abia.

“The so-called suspension is a joke taken too far. It is nothing more than a distraction orchestrated by those unsettled by the positive changes taking place under Governor Otti’s leadership,” Ogah said on Wednesday.

He emphasised that his mandate came from the people and no internal party politics could shake his commitment to their welfare and the development agenda of the current state administration.

“I remain solidly behind Governor Alex Otti. He is redefining governance in Abia State, bringing hope, transparency, and development. No amount of intimidation will derail this movement,” he declared.

Ogah also urged supporters and constituents to stay focused, assuring them that he remains undistracted in his mission to provide effective representation and champion their interests.

The Labour Party’s disciplinary committee had recommended the suspension of Ogah, Governor Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi, citing anti-party conduct.

Ogah said despite the party’s position his loyalty with the people who entrusted him with their mandate and the leadership committed to genuine change.

  • Erosion menace in Aba South

    Erosion menace in Aba South

Sir: We, the concerned residents of Nwabufor–Awkuzu–Waterside axis in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State, wish to use this medium to draw the attention of the Abia State government and the general public to a severe erosion crisis threatening our lives, properties, and livelihoods.

This ongoing disaster is a direct result of an incomplete underground drainage project initiated by a previous administration and handled by Heartland Construction Company. The drainage was designed to channel rainwater from various parts of Aba to the Waterside area. Unfortunately, the project was abandoned midway with a concrete headwall marking its abrupt end, instead of being extended fully to the Waterside discharge point.

As a result, the entire volume of stormwater from the city is being funneled into our area without proper outflow. This has created deep and expanding erosion gullies, swallowing houses and farmlands. The situation worsened when the concrete headwall, no longer able to withstand the water pressure, collapsed, unleashing even more damage.

We sincerely appreciate the ongoing developmental strides of Governor Alex Otti across the state—especially in areas of infrastructure, economic reform, and road rehabilitation. We are confident that under his visionary leadership, our cry will not go unheard.

We urgently appeal to the government to: Launch a comprehensive erosion control project in our area. Extend the drainage system properly to the Waterside as originally intended.  Close and stabilise the erosion site to prevent further environmental degradation.

This is a critical environmental issue that demands swift and decisive government action. We trust that Governor Otti, a leader known for listening to the people, will intervene promptly and effectively.

  • Abia teachers threaten indefinite strike ahead of school resumption

Abia teachers threaten indefinite strike ahead of school resumption

The Abia State Standing Committee of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced plans to commence an indefinite strike beginning Thursday in protest against what it described as “stringent measures on teachers” by the state government.

The planned industrial action comes just days before the scheduled resumption of schools for the third term academic session.

The decision followed deliberations during an expanded meeting of NUT representatives at the national, state, and branch levels held on March 4, and a subsequent meeting of the Abia State Standing Committee on March 28.

Prior to the strike announcement, the union had issued a 14-day ultimatum and a seven-day notice to Governor Alex Otti, demanding urgent attention to their grievances or face industrial action.

In a communiqué jointly signed by the State Chairman, Madu Friday, and the State Secretary, Mrs. Nnenna Okonkwo, the union expressed serious concern over the welfare and treatment of its members, which it says prompted the drastic step.

“Following the trend of unpalatable events that have been unfolding since our last communiqué of March 5, 2025, to His Excellency and other education stakeholders in the state, the State Standing Committee met to re-examine how far the government has gone in addressing the union’s demands but was shocked that no positive attention has been given in that regard.

“The Leaders-in-Session further observed that the March 2025 salary excluded both the minimum wage and the Teachers’ Salary Structure, while other unions with special salary arrangements, such as the Medical and Health Workers Union and the judiciary, were paid using their special structures in March.

“Teachers are still being retired by ASUBEB, despite His Excellency’s approval of the 65 years/40 years service extension. Promotions are released haphazardly without coordination, among other issues detailed in our communiqué of 5th March 2025, as attached.

“Non-payment of arrears to teachers in basic schools remains part of the problem. Since their colleagues in SEMB have started receiving parts of their arrears, it would be justifiable for basic school teachers to be considered as well.”

The union added: “We frown at such stringent measures on teachers and hereby resolve that a 14-day ultimatum be given to the government for these issues to be resolved amicably.

“Otherwise, the union may no longer be able to guarantee members’ unalloyed service to their employer—the government—for a worker deserves better conditions of service.”

They appealed to Governor Otti, stating, “It is our fervent hope that he will not allow the situation teachers have found themselves in to degenerate further.”

When contacted, the State Chairman, Friday, said: “Our 14-day ultimatum with a communiqué by the State Executive Council was submitted to all concerned government authorities on Friday, 28/03/2025, which elapsed on 11/04/2025, and the seven-day notice served on Wednesday, 16/04/2025 will end on Wednesday, 23/04/2025.

“The strike action is expected to begin on Thursday, 24/04/2025.”

Abia to leverage on sports to boost economy

Abia State Commissioner for Sports, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, has said that the state government will henceforth pay serious attention to the sports business, stressing that the state stands the chance of leveraging on Aba to boost its economy through sports merchandising.

Nwaobilor made the statement during the official launch of the ₦10 million 2025 season of the Fifty-1 Alliance Abia State Football Supalig 5-a-Side Championship at the Fifty-1 Alliance Sports Centre, Umuafor Aba.

The Commissioner said that when he came on board, he inherited a lot of rots and neglect in sports, but today, Abia have changes in various places that now make him believe that the state can bring sports economic zone within it by leveraging on what is happening in Aba.

“We’re thinking of sports as a business. Sports is not just jumping, running, and getting medals. There’s a business behind it, and that’s why athletes in America, Europe, and the rest of the world make huge sums of money every week. So, we’re thinking about that direction,” he said.

Nwaobilor said that sports merchandising is what Abia is moving into as it is already making shoes, jerseys, sports apparel, and other collections in Aba that are sold abroad.

  • Abia APC stakeholders unite, vow to deliver state for Tinubu in 2027

Abia APC stakeholders unite, vow to deliver state for Tinubu in 2027

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State have pledged to reclaim the state’s political structure and secure victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

This resolution was reached on Thursday night in Abuja, as all factions of the party in the state came together under one umbrella at the residence of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, with a shared commitment to reposition Abia within mainstream national politics.

Speaking to journalists after the nearly four-hour meeting, Senator Kalu, a former governor of the state, said the gathering was in line with President Tinubu’s directive at the last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which called for unity and cohesion within the party at all levels ahead of 2027.

Kalu expressed delight over the massive turnout of party leaders from Abia, declaring that the APC in the state now stands as one united, indivisible family, fully prepared to work for the success of the President and the party in the next elections.

He said: “We are more united now than ever because President Tinubu during the last APC NEC meeting gave us directive to go and reconcile members of the party in our States. He knows that we are capable of doing it and we will be very grateful to the people of our constituencies and the masses to join us in uniting the party.

“They stand to benefit more by enjoying the federal might. They can see what is happening in Abia North Senatorial District concerning Federal Government’s interventions and I am very thankful to former President Buhari and the incumbent President Tinubu. This is what the three Senatorial Districts will enjoy when they join the APC,” he said.

On the outcome of the meeting, Kalu said: “The last time I went to see President Tinubu, he was not very happy about the situation in Abia and I gave him my words that we are going to work hard to bring back Abia as a united indivisible entity.

“The president knows that we the leaders of Abia are capable of doing that. We are going to do that and we are calling and promising all the leaders that nobody will be left behind. We are in government and everybody must roll with us because anybody who does might regret his action.

“It is better they identify with the peace initiative and I believe that we will achieve our desire because the most important thing is for the party to be very strong and to speak very loudly during elections. We will be very thankful to the people of Abia for reposing their confidence in us.

“I was a very good governor, they also know that I am a very good senator and that I have never deceived the people of Abia State. I am committed to whatever we want to do and whoever we present as candidate for elections from the House of Assembly to the President, they will know that they will be credible,” he said.

Assuring the people of Abia state and the entire South East geo-political zone of a better deal under President Tinubu, Kalu said, “we have a President that has done first term and will be going for second term. If he is doing second term, Abia needs to also align to the centre because we cannot afford to be speaking differently.

“The consensus of the South East over 2027 is that the zone will do very well in supporting President Tinubu and I challenge them to mark my words. I have been working and I am on ground. Remember when Mr President visited Enugu, I was not there physically but I have his permission to visit all the governors in the South East and beyond and I am doing that.

“We are working and not resting. The President knows that their are few planners behind him and when we plan we execute the plan. The Class of 1999 governors are made up of very tough people and a very good class,” he noted.

APC National Welfare Secretary, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa said that: “The idea of this meeting is to come together for the purpose of redirecting the party and consolidating the gains the party has made in recent time.”

“APC Abia State has the largest influx from other parties in the last two years. We have received over 70 per cent of the former members of the PDP among others and this is the show of their acceptability of APC in Abia State. We have also come today to beg the leaders of the party in the State, starting with the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu who is the number six citizen in the country, the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and former governor, Orji Kalu, our serving Minister and other critical leaders who most of them are here and others absence due to one reason or the other, to come together, including our immediate past gubernatorial candidate, High Chief Ikechi Emenike.”

“We want to beg all of them to please, in the interest of the generality of the party, bury whatever individual differences, personal idiosyncrasies, and come together to put the party together. On our party, we want to assure them that our support is unshakable, our loyalty to their leadership is unshakable; our determination to capture the government house of Abia State come 2027 is uncompromising.

“We have also come here to condemn any leader, in one way or the other, covert or overt, in tune with the view that we are supporting the incumbent governor to continue in office. We are not saying that he should leave as the present governor but we are saying that come 2027 the governor of Abia State will be a member of APC.

“We will denounce, suspend and take punitive action against any leader who does otherwise. And we are saying that whatever that had happened in the past, today we are forgiving all of them and begging our leaders because APC Abia State has all it takes to win Abia State.

“We have the goodwill of the people and it is in favour of APC in Abia State. We want to assure the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that APC is not going to beg anybody to give him 25 per cent, but we are assuring him that APC will come first in 2027 elections in Abia State and that Abia State APC endorses his continuity as the President of Nigeria for the purpose of actualising those policies, those economic and social reforms that he has started and we are commending the genuieness of his determination to keep Nigeria right, we all praying for him.

“Finally, there is no dispute in APC leadership in Abia State, we have no problem with the party leadership in the state. We also want to commend the National Chairman, in fact, we call him a national chairman with the touch of victory. He has captured more States since he assumed office and Abia APC is going to give him victory come 2027.

“We also want to appreciate the supervisory leader of the South East APC, Governors Hope Uzodinma and his Ebonyi State counterpart, Rt. Hon. Nwifuru for the sound leadership that they have provided in the South East. We also want to commend our son, the Deputy Speaker of Nigeria for his sagacity, charisma and development stride. We also commend our host, the former governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for being tolerant and understanding and offering himself to lead us in the battle,” Nwankpa said.

Those in attendance at the stakeholders’ meeting include the host, Senator Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, APC National Welfare Secretary, Donatus Nwankpa, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and former Commissioner for Finance, Obinna Oriaku.

CSO urges contractor to fix failed portion of Abariba-Ohafiato Ndi Okoroc road

The Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Investigative Council has urged Swiber Africa Limited that handled the construction of the Abariba-Ohafia to Ndi Okoroc Road in Abia North Senatorial District, Abia state to fix the failed portion of the road.

In a statement signed by Convener of the council, Nelson Ossaiezen, the group noted that while the original 600 meters were constructed to the prescribed standards, the extended section exhibited signs of premature wear and tear.

According to the CSO, the road project was initially awarded for a 600-meter stretch, with a budget of ₦250 million.

It said that the project was funded as a constituency initiative by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, with the scope including the construction of the road and the installation of two side drains.

This initial phase of the project, the council confirmed, was completed according to specifications and in compliance with the outlined bill of quantities.

“However, following the completion of the initial phase, the community, including traditional leaders, petitioned Senator Kalu to extend the road by an additional 400 meters.

“Responding to this request, Senator Kalu, according to the report, generously funded the extension with an additional ₦52 million, which was paid directly to Swiber Africa Limited,” the statement said.

The group also noted that while the original 600 meters were constructed to the prescribed standards, the extended section exhibited signs of premature wear and tear.

“The extended 400-meter stretch showed inadequate road layering and drainage issues, leading to the road deteriorating at a much faster rate than expected. These findings were corroborated with local feedback, as residents noted issues such as pooling water and visible cracks along the newly constructed stretch, the statement said.

It called on Swiber Africa Limited to address the substandard work done on the extended section, urging the contractor to carry out urgent remediation work while recommending resurfacing the road, reinforcing its layers, and improving the drainage system to meet the required engineering specifications.

It also urged Senator Kalu to work with the contractor to address problems in the extension, ensuring its quality matches the original project.

The group commend the Federal Cooperative College Oji River for its commitment to transparency and accountability in public infrastructure projects.

It emphasised the need for more support for independent oversight and called for future constituency projects to include more robust monitoring mechanisms to prevent similar issues.

“Finally the council reaffirmed that, while the original project met expectations, the extension funded by Senator Kalu needed to be reviewed and appeal to the senator to look into this matter urgently,” the statement added.
