  • Abia police to name lawyers backing criminals

Abia State Commissioner of Police Adeleye Oyebade has said the command would soon make public, names of lawyers whose work is to defend robbers in court.

Oyebade spoke at Osisioma divisional headquarters, during a tour of the 16 divisions under the Aba Area Command. He said for the war on crime to be won, the police must work collaboratively with the judiciary.

The police chief said he was relocating the command headquarters to the state’s commercial hub to help him have a score card of the activities of his men in Aba and environs.

He noted that the command is doing all it can to instill discipline and fish out “bad eggs” among its officers and men, saying many of them have been tried, demoted and in extreme cases, dismissed from the service.

Oyebade urged his men to imbibe the spirit of pro-activeness in crime fighting because of the persistent efforts of hoodlums and criminal elements to beat security intelligence.

  • Police team up with Abia against crime

Police team up with Abia against crime

‘To identified cross-border criminals and local gangs as being responsible for the new wave of armed robbery and kidnapping in the city, vowed that all criminal elements will be chased out of Aba and Abia state within a very short time’

The police in Abia State have scaled up their onslaught against crime in Aba, teaming up with the state government to relieve the besieged commercial nerve of the state. Abia State has been under siege by hoodlums for months, leaving residents in fear.

Not too long ago, a lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal constituency, Hon. Ossy Prestige called on the federal government, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris and Chief of Army Staff General Tukur Buratai to send troops to Aba to contain the insecurity in the city.

Prestige said the entire security structure in Aba has collapsed leaving it at the mercy of daredevil criminals armed with sophisticated weapons. He noted that if nothing urgent was done to arrest the situation, the city which is yet to recover from the impact of armed men invasion in 2010, may witness yet another mass exodus of its residents and relocation businesses to neighbouring states.

In two weeks, two medical doctors, a lawyer, a man said to be a staff of Nigeria Breweries, Aba and another resident of the city have been kidnapped.

The Nation checks revealed that most of the security agents need more men and adequate logistics to fight the hoodlums.

A member of the family of a recent kidnap victim told our reporter that they had to negotiate with the kidnappers after reporting the matter and waiting for three days without any positive response, adding that that within two days of their interaction and subsequent payment of ransom, they got back their loved one.

To arrest the ugly situation, the Abia State Police Command has launched the Tactical Response Squad (TRS). Speaking at the launch of the TRS the state Commissioner of Police Adeleye Oyebade said that the TRS was set up by the command to further tackle crime and criminality in Aba and other parts of the state, even as he warned that his administration would not tolerate any form of extortion by men of the TRS and other teams in Aba and any other parts of the state.

The Police Chief further stated that the state government had agreed to pay some of the personnel’s allowances.

He disclosed that the state government was going to provide the command with about 20 vehicles and patrol teams with walkie-talkies for effective communication.

Oyebade thanked the Inspector-General of Police for agreeing to send more personnel and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the state.

He also appealed to Aba residents to provide police with useful information on the activities of hoodlums within the vicinity as he maintained that the police was ready to confront the hoodlums.

The state governor Okezie Ikpeazu has placed a cash reward of N1million for information on the whereabouts of kidnappers and armed robbers in their domain. Ikpeazu also announced a reward of N1 million to security agents who are able to arrest or smash any kidnap or armed robbery gang in the state as his government’s further support to ensure the sustenance of peace and tranquility in the state.

In a release issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Enyinnaya Appolos the governor was said to identified cross-border criminals and local gangs as being responsible for the new wave of armed robbery and kidnapping in the city, vowed that “all criminal elements will be chased out of Aba and Abia state within a very short time”.

The Governor recalled that the last Yuletide season was the most peaceful in the history of the state as a result of the vigilance and hard work of the security agencies.

  • Peace returns to Abia community

    Peace returns to Abia community

‘During this peace meeting, we expect the Ogurube to reverse the curse through pouring of libation to appease the gods of the land which will show that peace has returned to the land and the eating and drinking together by all present will show that we are one’

‘Anyone who said that there is no peace in our land such a person will have problem visiting his household as peace is in our land and with that we must move forward in all spheres of life’

The peace that evaded the Ibeku kingdom in Umuahia North council area of Abia State for a long time may have returned, to the relief of the subjects and their king.

The traditional ruler of the area, HRM Eze Samuel Onuoha Ogurube IV had placed a curse on some of his subjects, throwing the community into confusion, but the monarch has now walked back on the spell.

The reversal was done during a peace meeting initiated by the member representing Umuahia East state constituency at the state House of Assembly, Hon Chukwudi Apugo who felt aggrieved that the problem of the kingdom polarised the people to the extent that there was profound acrimony among them.

At the meeting held at the Ibeku Egu Asa Development Association (IEADA) hall, the chairman of the meeting and former commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Emma Nwabuko said that he is happy that all were at the hall for the peace meeting. Nwabuko said that their coming shows that they desire peace to return to their kingdom, adding that with peace, they are ready to attract even and faster development in their area.

The former Abia State commissioner said, “The Ogurube was so maligned to the extent that things were written and credited to the king without his knowledge”.

Nwabuko noted that all the members of the IEADA who were elected during their last meeting were all at the hall for the meeting.

“We therefore expect the Ogurube to use this chance to reverse all that he may have said against any of the sons and daughters of the kingdom”.

He said, “During this peace meeting, we expect the Ogurube to reverse the curse through pouring of libation to appease the gods of the land which will show that peace has returned to the land and the eating and drinking together by all present will show that we are one.”

In his speech the initiator of the peace meeting, Hon Apugo said that he is happy as everyone has come for the peace meeting and with the presence of Ogurube shows that all Ibeku people are together and desire peace for the even development of their community.

Apugo said that there is no problem in their community as the Present General (PG) of IEADA Chief Emeka Enyiazu, the one who the entire people came together to elect, is also at the meeting which shows that there is no problem.

He said, “The sign of authority is that the PG holds his meeting at the association’s civic hall, all the traditional rulers of our community are here for the peace meeting including our women, so what else are we talking about, excepts those who are blind and do not want peace that will say there is no peace in Ibeku land”.

“This shows that there is no problem between us in our community, however there are people who have refused to embrace peace for their selfish interest but we are ready to allow such group of people to come back whenever they are interested to come back as their are our people”.

“There is a saying in Igboland that when a father beats his child with the right hand, he uses the left hand to cuddle the child, that is what we expect the Ogurube to do today by forgiving all those who may have erred against him one way or the other by reversing any curse placed on such people”.

“All those our brethren who had earlier been ostracized for one reason or the other have all come back except those who have refused to come back, Ogurube did not beat any of us but just waved his hand which the accompanying breeze has made those he had intended to beat to keep turning around”.

In his reaction the chairman Ibeku traditional rulers council, HRH Eze Hens Ezekwem said that he never knew what the meeting was all about and since it a peace meeting which that it is good one, adding that those who had gone astray are all back.

Eze Ezekwem noted that since it is a peace meeting that it was the reason behind all the traditional rulers from Ibeku attending the meeting and are happy over the development which will help in developing their area.

He said, “Whenever Ibeku people who are quarreling against themselves and another problem that concerns the kingdom arises, that concerns their community with a neighboring community they will sort it out first peacefully despite the problem between them and still continue with their quarrel”.

“All Ibeku traditional rulers are solidly behind our Ogurube who is the head and leader of all traditional rulers. However, I want to call on politicians in our place to stop interfering in the affairs of our community and allow peace to reign and development to come in”.

In his reaction the Ogurube said that anyone who said that there is no peace in Ibekuland should go to wherever he likes but that the main problem facing them is politics, “As our people who are in different political parties are causing our problem, everybody must not belong to the same political party”.

The Ogurube said, “Anyone who said that there is no peace in our land such a person will have problem visiting his household as peace is in our land and with that we must move forward in all spheres of life”.

“The problem started when I was suspended by the state government for doing nothing, as I did not deserve to be so suspended since my hands are very clean and l pour this libation to lift the curse I earlier placed on some of the people of my kingdom”.

Following the statement by the Ogurube, Chief Charles Ogbonnaya who is the current commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs through whom the state government suspended the traditional ruler, later knelt down to plead with the traditional ruler.

Ogbonnaya said that he has been in support of the traditional ruler right from the time he was not their king and that their relationship dates back to the time when his late father was alive until now he is the traditional ruler.

He said, “Your suspension was an assignment given to me by the state government, I was merely doing my duty as assigned to me by government because they had the belief that there was going to be a breach of peace, but with the peace meeting, I will go back and tell [the authorities] we now have peace to enable them lift the suspension order”.

  • Abia promises to support NFF

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia on Wednesday said that the state government would continue to support the efforts of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in developing football in the country.

Ikpeazu made this known when the President of NFF, Amaju Pinnick and his team paid him a visit in Umuahia.

The Governor said that Abia government would pay adequate attention to soccer, as it was a big business and expressed hope that the present leadership of NFF would record giant strides.

He disclosed that the Nsulu Games Village in the state would be officially opened as part of the state government’s effort to encourage progressive sports development.

Speaking earlier,Pinnick stated that Enyimba FC ranked among the most successful teams in Africa and had skills that could take it to the CAF champions league.

He promised to assist in developing Enyimba FC to international brand and called for government’s commitment towards the achievement of the feat.

  • Ohanaeze applauds FG on agric initiatives

The President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, has applauded the agricultural initiatives of the Federal Government saying they are yielding positive results in Igbo speaking states.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo is the apex socio-cultural organisation of Igbo speaking states in Nigeria.

Addressing newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday, Nwodo contended that with the implementation of the initiatives, the federal government had taken the best move to take the people out of recession.

He said that the various agricultural schemes embarked by the government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) were a huge success.

The Ohanaeze chieftain said that the CBN governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, should be commended for the intervention of the apex bank in various empowerment programmes aimed at stimulating the economy.

Nwodo said: “we want to use this opportunity to salute the governor of the Central Bank.

“This gentleman has had one of the most difficult challenges that have faced any governor of the CBN.

“What he has done lately in terms of fighting the value of the naira is most commendable.

“His programmes at assisting agriculture have impacted positively on the sector.

“It is working in Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra and it is beginning to work in Enugu state and we are immensely grateful to him.

“We encourage him to continue to work in this way to ensure that the ordinary people in Nigeria can bounce back as this recession continues to recede in its calamitously effect on our standard of living.”

Nwodo said that the achievements of the government in the petroleum sector should not be overlooked as the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had been reinvigorated.

He said that the achievements recorded in the NNPC during the tenure of Dr Ibe Kachikwu as Minister of State for Petroleum and Managing Director were outstanding.

“Since the NNPC was incorporated, no minister or managing director has ever put the corporation on public portal.

“But by the click of the mouse, when our son was there, you could tell how much came into NNPC every day and how much was spent.

“For the first time, petroleum subsidy was removed without the economy collapsing,” he said.

The Ohaneze president appealed to the Federal Government to intervene and rehabilitate the Enugu/Port Harcourt expressway which he described as “death trap.’’

“While we commend the minister of Power, Works and Housing for the work that has started on the Enugu/Onitsha road, we want to draw his attention to the road between Enugu and Port Harcourt.

“The road is a death trap. It is tortuous and God knows how long it will take to rehabilitate the road especially with all the stops by security men,” he said.

Nwodo expressed concern that the entire South-East seemed to be under security siege by officers of the armed forces, who he alleged, extort money openly from innocent citizens and road users.

He said that complaints by the organisation against the brazen impunity of the security agencies on the roads across the zone had remained unattended to.

  • Abia Poly workers to get Nov pay ‘soon’

Acting Rector of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Prof. Friday Ezionye Eboh said staff of the polytechnic would soon be paid their November 2016 salary. This is even as he has assured that the institution under his watch would not experience any industrial dispute.

Eboh in a maiden press conference with newsmen at the conference room of the polytechnic  described industrial action as an ill wind that blows anyone in the institution any good.

According to him, the school since his assumption as the acting rector has saved a lot of monies for the institution through plugging of so many leakages and wastages used by being individuals to siphon monies that were supposed to be remitted into the school’s coffers.

He said that the current steps taking by his administration was to ensure that there won’t be any breach of the institution’s academic calendar as it were the case in the past.

“We are here to institute a system that works and outlive us and others that will assume office as the head of the institution. We want to ensure that the students get effective delivery of services which they paid for. It is our resolve that the school get back to winning and glorious ways.”

The rector said that his administration was exploring other avenues to generate more money for the school in order to compliment the monthly subvention to the school by the state government.

  • Abia to scale up shoe making

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu says his administration will enhance the standard of shoe making in Aba, as part of its investment development strategy.
Ikpeazu, who spoke at a news briefing in the Government House, Umuahia, said he would facilitate capacity building in the industry.
He said the government would reposition shoe makers in Aba as front runners in shoe production.
The governor said his administration had secured a 1.5 billion dollars shoe factory deal with a Chinese shoe industry to contribute to the capacity building of shoe makers in Aba.
“Abia government is ready to acquire its own automated line of shoe production machine and we have a time frame to achieve it.
“We believe the interaction will contribute to capacity building.
“Today, the option left for us is to open our space for people to produce in Aba. So, we have translated our ‘Made in Aba’ campaign to ‘Make in Aba’ campaign,” he added.

  • Abia CJ decongests Aba prison

    Abia CJ decongests Aba prison

The Abia State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Theresa Uzokwe has reduced the number of inmates in the Aba prison, but you will not appreciate the impact of the reprieve until you hear the story of the correctional facility.

Aba Federal Prisons, left behind by the colonial administration, is weighed down by many burdens, like others across the country. Apart from logistic problems, it is also congested. The Nation gathered that the facility which was originally meant for about 250 inmates is now being occupied by well over 500 inmates.

It was also gathered that the population of the inmates was putting more pressure on the facility and a daunting challenge for the staff of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) to maintain peace within the yard.

From the records, the prison has 597 female and male inmates with 402 detainees on Awaiting Trial roll, nine lifers, 105 convicts, 80 on observation and one detainee.

A staff member who does not want to named, told our correspondent that the prison facility is being overstretched because of the population of inmates at the facility even as the source blamed the judiciary and police for the population of inmates on Awaiting Trial list.

According to the source, some of the inmates since they were remanded in the prison custody have never been to court, while some after their initial arraignments have been dumped in the prison with several court adjournments which have stalled their cases till date.

According to the source, some of the inmates who are the most difficult to manage are people with stringent bail conditions, those who feel that they were unnecessarily arrested and the ones who felt that they were unjustly detained and would have served out their jail term if convicted of the crime which they were accused of.

Some of the inmates who spoke to our correspondent raised issues of poor sanitary condition, poor feeding, lack of legal aid, non-availability of vehicle to convey them to court any day their matter will be coming up, delayed justice system (persistent adjournment of matters in court) and amongst others which has their continued detention.

Luck has smiled on some of these inmates as the Chief Judge of the state during a jail delivery exercise at the Aba Prisons granted them bail and equally discharged some.

Little drama however, played out at about 10:55am shortly after the State Chief Judge started sitting for the day. A woman who was later identified as Mrs. Elizabeth Akwuiwu-chukwu, the Chief Registrar High Court of Justice claiming to be acting on the orders of the Chief Judge, asked journalists who had come to cover the event to leave the hall.

Akwuiwu-chukwu said, “The CJ asked me to tell you to leave the hall. We will call you in when we finish,” but when the journalists demanded to know why the CJ asked them to leave at such event, the chief registrar said “I am only acting on orders”.

It was while the journalists were on their way out of the Prison yard, that the public relations officer of the state judiciary, Chika Orji-Nwoke told the newsmen that the CJ has changed her earlier position.

Uzokwe, who spent over four hours looking at cases of inmates, granted bail to about five inmates while seven others were discharged of the offences that they were alleged to have committed.

One thing that stood out throughout the exercise was prolonged matters in court and unlawful detention of Abians at the facility without any case pending before any court of law.

While seven inmates, namely, Ogochukwu Nwaeze, Obinna Nwankwo, Iko Mohammed, Peter Jonah, Akajiaku Achilihu, Ndubuisi Uwakwe and Udo Akpan were discharged for being unlawfully and illegally detained at the facility, Ezere Jite, Nnamdi and Eziaha Chigbu were granted bail of N50, 000 each with one surety.

Others who weren’t lucky had their cases referred back to the trial judge for speedy hearing.

The Abia CJ said that some of the discharged inmates were yet to be arraigned in court while others could have served out their jail term if they were tried and convicted of the crime that they were accused of even as she frowned at delayed trial and stringent conditions of bail given by trial magistrates and judges to the accused persons.

She also directed judges handling cases of some of the inmates she referred to their various courts to ensure compliance and expedite action.

Speaking at the end of the exercise, Justice Kenneth Nwosu of Aba High Court III described the exercise at the Aba Prison as landmark.

According to Nwosu, the exercise is statutorily provided for which empowers the State Chief Judge to visit prisons in the state once in a while to review cases of those who were wrongly convicted, illegally detained or those who might have served out their jail term assuming the accused have been tried and convicted of their various crimes.

He said an innovation is already in place to ensure quick dispensation of justice and to eliminate seeking of unnecessary interlocutory appeals sought by lawyers which contributes to overstay of matters in court and urged people who felt that their fundamental human rights were being infringed as a result of their long detention to seek redress in court.

The Deputy Comptroller of Prisons (DCP) in charge of Aba Prison, Stephen Ugba hailed the State CJ for coming and added that the transparency of the exercise would give hope to other inmates and also reduce the stress of the personnel in managing the inmates.

Ugba called for the support of the state government and other well-meaning Abians and Nigerians to the facility which it said lacks logistics and other amenities to run its day-to-day activities.

Meanwhile, the freed inmates were left with mixed feelings of leaving the facility and what the future holds for them after their life at the detention camp, but other inmates who were not beneficiary of the CJ’s magnanimity had no other choice than to rejoice with their mates who would no longer eat their malnourished foods, bath in the open, being chased into their confinement by personnel of the NPS.

They knelt down thanking God for an opportunity to once again reunite with their family members and welcomed back by old friends.

  • Abia community seeks oil blocks

Indigenous people of Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have asked the federal government to allocate oil blocks to them.

Ukwa West is rich in oil and is only about 30 minutes’ drive from Aba, the commercial hub of the state.

Its people have complained of being neglected by the government, and of deplorable roads and lack of social amenities, among other challenges.

At a stakeholders’ consultative meeting for sustainable development of Niger Delta, organised by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) the people of the oil-producing community advocated for the issuance of oil blocks to some of the oil-producing areas.

The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, representatives of groups, youths and other stakeholders, who deliberated on the way forward for the NDDC and their host communities.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Director for Community and Rural Development of NDDC, Otunba Isima Abosede, represented by Mr. Friday Nwachi, said the meeting will enable the Commission to interact with stakeholders on the way forward.

He said the new board of the NDDC has started redefining the vision of the Commission in a manner that would mutually benefit the people of the area.

“There is need for all stakeholders to take care of all our projects, to protect and cherish them at all times,” he said.

The communiqué asked the commission to dutifully implement budgetary allocations by adopting the subsisting intrastate revenue sharing formula on the basis of 60% volume of oil production, 20% equality among lgas, 10% pipeline communities, and 10% oil exploration zones, whether the zone produces oil  or not .

He said, “NDDC should boost agricultural production activities in the Niger Delta region by providing financial support, seedlings and cultivates extension services, value-chain deliverables and sundry incentives to farmers. For ownership and sustainability of NDDC projects and programmes; community-based institutions should be empowered as appropriate. NDDC should hold the stakeholders’ consultative engagement meeting periodically.”

  • Abia CAN gets new leadership

The Abia State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has elected another set of leaders up in the next two years.

Apostle General (Dr) Emmanuel Otutubuike Agomuo of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) is the new chairman.

Agomuo called for the unity of the church, saying, “We are Christians and not politicians, Christians should stay away from politics, we can vote, but we don’t have to be partisan”.

Blaming the disunity in the church today on members’ involvement in partisan politics, the new CAN chairman said it was for this reason that his mission would be to unify Christians in Abia State where he claimed there were a lot of problems.

“Christians in Abia don’t agree, they are not one, so, I think I have that mind or the mission to come and unite the Christians so that we can be talking with one voice because we serving one God”.

Agomuo said his administration would equally focus on leadership training for members.

“We only attend government functions and come back,” he said. “So, in the next quarter of my administration, I’m going to organise a workshop where we will discuss the qualities of a leader”.
