Soldier killed in home state Abia after surviving five years fight against terrorists

One of the soldiers killed by unknown gunmen in Abia state on Thursday was Corporal Lucky Ikechukwu Ikpeama, an Abia indigene who survived five years official posting to Maiduguri, only to get killed in his own state.

According to a source close to the military in Abuja, such insensitive attack against military personnel who are risking their lives to keep citizens safe seriously dampens many soldiers’ morale as they are prepared to die battling terrorists rather than being attacked by those they are protecting.

Although the Abia State Government placed a N25 million bounty on perpetrators of the killing which occurred around 7:45 am at Obikabia Junction, in the Ogbor Hill area of Abia State, IPOB activist in the Diaspora, Simon Ekpa is accusing the state government-sponsored vigilantes of being behind the killing.

In a statement under his social media handles on X, Simon Ekpa alleged that it was government that has been killing those he described as ‘ Biafra young men and women in Abia state’.

“The Biafra government hereby wish to announce that all vigilante in Abia state under Nigeria state establishment is banned, effective from tomorrow 29.5.2024.

“The government of Biafra has mandated the BDF to hunt for the terrorists and the killers immediately to avert another tragedy.

“We can’t allow your terrorism to stay overnight. A new front is therefore opened in Abia State. We call on Biafra to stay away from any Vigilante.

“In addition to this measures, there will be a special lockdown in Abia state, this lockdown to be announced in later day,” he stated.

In a reaction to the killings, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar condemned it and urged the federal government to explore a political strategy for resolution of Biafran activist, Nnamdi Kanu’s ongoing trial.

According to Atiku whose comments were posted on X, it os the only way to defuse the tension in the Soith East.

“The violence that led to the killing of soldiers and civilians in Abia State on Thursday stands condemned; my thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who may have lost a loved one, may their souls rest in peace.

“But even more profound is the impact of yesterday’s sit-at-home in the Southeast region of our country on students writing WAEC examinations.

“The veil of the so-called Unknown Gun Men hiding under cover to unleash death and mayhem must be lifted to ensure that criminal elements are separated from legitimate agitators.

“To this end, without prejudice to the ongoing legal processes, I think the time has come to explore a political resolution to the Nnamdi Kanu and other associated issues; I believe that this will defuse the compressor cooker situation in the region. It will be a win-win for all parties,” Atiku stated.

  • Abia to collaborate with Israel in digital economy, technology, says Otti

Abia to collaborate with Israel in digital economy, technology, says Otti

The Abia state government has stated that it is eager to work with Israel to help it realise its full economic and technical potential, particularly in the digital economy, agriculture, human capital, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSME).

Governor Alex Otti disclosed this during a visit to Government House, Umuahia, by His Excellency Michael Freeman, the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria.

The Israeli ambassador praised Otti for enhancing security in Abia, according to a statement released by Kazie Uko, the governor’s chief press secretary.

He said: “As Israelis, we’re known for many things. One of the things we’re known for is not being so easy on security situations. So, when I received the invitation and had the conversation to come to Abia State, I went back to my Embassy, to my security team, and said, I’ve been invited by the government to come to Abia State.

“I expected the answer to be, ‘You are not going to Abia State, that’s not happening’, but actually the answer came back within a couple of hours, ‘Absolutely, we clear that security wise, you can go’.

“I think, again, there’s another. I’ve been here now in Nigeria  for two years, and other than being in the FCT (Abuja) and other than being in Lagos, this is my first visit outside of those two places, which again I think is a tribute to you, it’s a tribute to your work, it’s a tribute to everything that is happening here (in Abia).”

The Israeli ambassador noted that there are many similarities between Israel, Nigeria, and Abia, especially their entrepreneurial drive. He called his visit to Abia noteworthy, given that it occurred on the day when the Jewish nation was commemorating its 76th year of independence.

He said: “We both have a very young population. We both have a population that is innovative, that is determined to do better than their peers and to continually strive. Nobody taking ‘no’ for an answer, okay.

“For us, and I know it’s the same for Nigerians if the door is closed, then you’re coming through the window and if the window is closed, you’re coming in through the ceiling into the room, and that is very much an Israeli trait.”

He added that by combining technology and creativity, the governments of Israel and Abia might achieve great things in the field of agriculture.

“We are blessed to have leading agriculture experts in the world and specifically in areas of cassava, rice and cocoa production.

“It takes 5,000 litres of water to grow one kilogramme of rice. It is a huge amount of water, but Israel has discovered a technology that allows you to grow one kilogramme of rice with 1,500 litres of water, and using the drip technology you can grow it anywhere,” he said.

Governor Otti embraced the notion of cooperation, thanking the Israeli Ambassador for his visit and accepting his offer to visit Israel.

He said: “I’m very pleased, very happy to receive Your Excellency, the Ambassador, today in Abia State. I’m more enamoured to listen to you speak passionately about some of the things that are so, so important to us as a government and as a people.

“I’m very happy and I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that the state government will partner with you and work closely with you.

“Listening to you, you have a clear understanding of how the economy works, particularly the modern economy, and you have also done extensive research, particularly the things that are important to us in Abia.”

He claimed that the people’s tenacity and fortitude in the face of the present economic climate and the shortcomings of previous governments had inspired him to continue developing policies and initiatives that would enhance their well-being and support the success of their enterprises.

“After extensive research about the things that are important to us and the resources that are available, in fact, I would say that the most important resource we have are the human beings.

“The ‘can do spirit’ of our people the creativity, the innovativeness, the never say die attitude of our people, that’s actually what keeps us going

“Our people, despite the difficulties and failures of governance they have faced in the past, have continued to trudge on, to fight.

“They are so resilient and when I look at them and their spirit that is what keeps me going. I am encouraged to work for them,” Governor Otti said.

‘Abia fixing roads for economic rejuvenation’

Governor Alex Otti says he is fixing and reconstructing roads in various communities to create access for economic rejuvenation in Abia State.

Governor Otti stated that his administration is deliberate in the infrastructural revolutions in Abia, adding that he is in government to impact lives positively.

The Governor, who was speaking in Umuahia, the state capital said “Rather than stressing on the provision of palliatives, his government is looking for more enduring solutions to the economic challenges of the people.

“We are looking at more enduring solutions. So all the things we do is actually to arm you, to give you an instrument and to teach you how to fish rather than giving you fish.

“Our people luckily are not very dependent. If we give them wings, they will fly.

“Think of the small and medium scale enterprises, think of the woman selling akara, the woman selling fish and tomatoes, once you give them access, they would succeed.

“So, when we are doing those roads it is deliberate, we know that the people who are producing foodstuff, that’s agricultural produce, in different communities, a lot of them are not able to take them to the town because there is no access.

“This is one of the ways to empower them. What we are doing is what we expect will impact more positively and in a sustainable fashion than just sharing money and sharing rice, but that doesn’t mean we are not, but we are doing it, we are targeting the most vulnerable.”

The state chief executive announced that he would in the next few weeks flag off the reconstruction of the Osisioma-Ekeakpara-NNPC depot road.

He noted that the road is strategic to the economy of the state as it leads to the industrial zones of the state.

Otti also made public that work had started on Ohanku and Obohia roads in Aba in addition to 29 other roads where work is ongoing in various parts of Abia.

He said that his administration had awarded a contract for the reclaiming of the Ovom- Ogbor-Hill gully erosion and other erosion sites with the support of ecological funds, adding that the overall intention of his government is to make the environment habitable for the people.

The governor blamed the long time that it had taken to patch up many roads cut open in the ongoing operation free potholes, to the inability to source chippings due to the strike action embarked at various quarry sites.

On the salary arrears of some government agencies including ASCETA, ASUBEB, Abialine Network among others owed by previous administrations, Otti assured that workers in these parastatals would soon receive their arrears as they are being keyed into the system since the pensions have been defrayed.

The state chief executive noted that in a bid to ensure sanity across major cities of the state, a joint task force has been set up to deal permanently with the issues of touting, traffic offences, wrong parking, and extortion among other anomalies.

The Governor noted that work is ongoing at various Local government headquarters in addition to various communities and assured that his administration would continue to support the local government Mayors for more development projects at the grassroots level.

Solomon is a scrap dealer with his shop on Onyeocha Street, off Port Harcourt road, Aba South Local Government Area.

“The security operative there told them to park well, and in the process they shot the security man and moved for their target. But the man had disappeared before they got into the shop.

“It angered them and that led to sporadic shooting, sending people to scamper for safety after which they left. By the time help came, the security man had died.

“The gunmen came in through Lagos Street and left the same way. Someone used his car to block the street, but didn’t block it well and so they forced their way through. We wonder how policemen who were on a stop and search operation within the area disappeared upon hearing the gunshots.”

    Abia condemns butchers’ protest

Abia State Government has reacted to the street protest by the Umuahia Butchers Association over an unfounded speculation that it plans to relocate the abattoir to another area.

The government described the protest as ill-conceived, saying there was no truth in the speculation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the butchers took to the streets of the state capital last Thursday over an alleged plot by the government “to forcefully evict them” from the abattoir located at Mgbarakuma Community, near Umuahia.

They alleged that the plot was being hatched by the community and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Navy Capt. Macdonald Uba.

The protesters, who marched through the major streets of Umuahia, ended up at the Government House in Umuahia, displaying placards with inscriptions.

Some of the inscriptions read: “Save us, our governor”, “Ministry of Lands, Garki land is not for sale, please leave us”, “Abia people, slaughter Garki is not for sale”, among others.

In an interview with reporters, the President of the association, Chief Ngozi Williams, said the abattoir had existed at Mgbarakuma since 1994.

According to Williams, the host community had, in the last two years, made several attempts to force them out of the abattoir.

He said: “The community had gone as far as selling some parcels of land that make up the abattoir to individuals.

“We were relocated from the old Garki in Umuahia Town to this place in 1994 during the military administration of Col. Ike Nwosu (rtd.) and the abattoir was inaugurated by the then Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Adamu Chiroma.

“But the Mgbarakuma indigenes came up about two years ago and asked us to leave the place.

“They claimed that government had revoked the land.

“Ever before that time, about six hectares of the land were sold to unknown individuals by the community,” Williams said.

He also said about a month ago, the governor’s aide started fencing the abattoir, claiming that the place had been sold to him by the government.

“About two to three weeks ago, he brought armed operatives of the Operation Crush to manhandle and chase us out.

“Most of our property were damaged.

“We have written to several agencies of the government to register our complaints,” Williams further said.

He said the development had affected their businesses and appealed to the government to come to their aid.

“If the government doesn’t want us to continue doing our business in the present location, it should relocate us to another place within Umuahia.

“This is because it is only the government that has the right to relocate us and not individuals,” Williams said.

But reacting to the protest and allegations by the association, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Ebere Ubani, said the butchers were not asked to leave the abattoir.

Ubani also said that the association was seeking for ways to divert people’s attention from the actual issue on ground.

“We have never asked them to leave, all we are saying is perform your corporate social responsibility to us as the host community,” he said.

Also, the security adviser to the governor described the allegations made by the butchers as “spurious”.

Uba said the construction works taking place in the market were meant to improve the state of the abattoir and not to evict the butchers.

He said: “We have begun the fencing of the cattle market in Lokpanta and extended the same to the abattoir in Mgbarakuma.

“We at no time told them to relocate or to leave the place or plan for the place to be used for any other purpose than what it is currently being used for.

“The thing is that whatever be their reasons for resisting any further improvements in the market is a figment of their imagination.

“And I think I should say their resistance is based on their selfish interest.”

The Chief Security Officer to the Governor, Mr Ken Nwosu, who received the protesters at the Government House, appealed to them to be peaceful and law-abiding.

Nwosu said protecting the interest of the people remains paramount in the government’s agenda.

He said: “The letter you have brought to us will definitely be delivered to the governor.

“I know that issues concerning abattoir and cemetery are under the local government’s jurisdiction.

“So, your letter will also be delivered to the Transition Committee Chairman of Umuahia South Local Government where the abattoir is situated.”
