Use registered hospitals, expectant mothers told

Wife of the Lagos State Governor Mrs Abimbola Fashola has urged expectant mothers to use only hospitals with qualified doctors and midwives for their ante-natal.

Mrs Fashola spoke yesterday at a sensitisation and awareness campaign on Maternal and Child Mortality Reduction (MCMR) at Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

She noted that many expectant mothers were still delivering in facilities manned by quacks and unskilled birth attendants.

Mrs. Fashola, who spoke through the wife of the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mrs. Azeezat Tijani, said many women that patronised unregistered health centres are usually referred to public secondary health facilities when the quacks could no longer handle their case.

The government, through its agencies, is monitoring and regulating healthcare providers activities so as, to bring illegal operators to book, she said. Mrs Fashola solicited for public cooperation to ensure that quacks are caught.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said the strategy were yielding results as evident in some key performance indicators.

A major thrust of the strategy, he said, was advocacy, public enlightenment and sensitisation campaigns at the community level, including radio jingles, documentaries, information, education and communication materials on maternal and child health interventions.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Public Health, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, said the Town Hall meetings provide government with an avenue to engage the communities on efforts geared towards reducing maternal and child mortality.

“All we offer as an organisation will not have been possible without the Lord, who blessed us with many individuals and corporate bodies, who have partnered us. Be blessed by all God provides for you in this fiesta and, please, go out there and transform your community. Remember that your life is incomplete until you are committed to the community. Do this with the fear of God and our world will be better for it.”

She wished the people a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Dame Fashola, who described Senator Tinubu as ‘Grandma of the state’, saluted her efforts to give youths a sense of belonging.

“We all belong to different denominations but we have come here to praise God. The generation that seeks Him will have all the good things of life,” she added.

Mrs. Amosun said: “It is astonishing to see the amount of talents being showcased here. I saw the angelic performance of these youth and marveled. No doubt, this platform provides an opportunity for you all to be noticed outside this hall.”

“I believe the success and future of nations lie in the hands of today’s youths. And if young people have strong values, the best education, good health, right priorities and full sincerity, then we can say that the future is bright.

“We say a big thank you to all our young people for coming and being a major part of the fiesta. May your futures be great, bringing pride to your parents, generation and the entire nation.”
