  • Ojude-Oba: Saraki preaches unity of Nigerians

…As Ijebu people mark Ojude Oba carnival in splendour

Amid a cloudy sky above and a wave of excitements on ground,  Ijebu – Ode, the Ogun State royal town of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, turned aglow with celebrations for the better part of Thursday as the Ijebu sons and daughters celebrated their Ojude Oba annual cultural carnival in glamour and splendour.

Over 35 age grades – Regberegbes – all dressed in colourful and distinguishing attires to showcase their rich cultural heritage, took turn to pay homage to Oba Adetona after series of rhythmic dance steps round the oval shaped arena of the festival arcade.

The regberegbes were closely followed in this rite by the dozens of horse riders (Eleshins) and descendants of the town’s baloguns (Ijebu warlords) by noon during which the carnival peaked with an estimated15, 000 people participating even as Dane guns boomed intermittently.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who was the Special guest of honour for this year Ojude Oba and whose arrival was greeted with applause, hailed Ojude Oba as a cultural festival that “fosters unity” among the Ijebus.

Saraki, whose  entourage include Senators – Dino Melaye (Kogi State), Ben Bruce (Bayelsa State), Abiodun Olujimi (Ekiti State), Duro Faseyi (Ekiti State), Buruji Kashamu(Ogun State), Shaba Lafiaji(Kwara State), Sam Anyanwu(Imo State), Saraki’s  media aide, Alh. Olaniyonu Yusuph and more, urged  Nigerians to emulate the Ijebu people, who despite their diversity of faiths,  live and interact harmoniously with one another.

The Senate president described the over 100 years old festival as a “noble culture” that has continued to serve as a veritable rallying point for all sons and daughters of Ijebu nation.

He said whenever the issue of “resilience and dynamism of culture” is being discussed, Ojude – Oba readily comes to mind, adding that the festival has continued to grow from strength to strength because of the leadership quality of the Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Adetona.

He noted that it has also become obvious that only quality leadership could engender progress and development such as the type witnessed in Ijebuland.

He lauded the Awujale whose unifying force, he said, is an  attestation to his good leadership, not only in Ijebu and Ogun state but also in the entire country.

He described the equestrian touch of the horse riding by the family of horse riders and descendants of the baloguns which was a noticeable feature of the  Ojude Oba carnival as one that depicts the festival’s nobleness.

According to him, Nigeria should draw strength from her diversity like the Ijebu people and not use her  diversity to create barrier or wedge to national unity and progress.

He urged Nigerians, particularly leaders, to create programmes that would engenders unity and peaceful co – existence of people.

“Ojude Oba fosters unity among all Ijebu people, and this is another way in which we as a nation could take a leaf from this festival. Unity is paramount; unity is key. When we are united, we achieve more. When we are united, we record monumental progress.

“I urge us all, therefore, to pursue more activities that will unite our various peoples. Our diversity is our strength. We must, therefore, continue to initiate programmes that will bring us together and further highlight the fact that we are one and the same.

“In over a century of Ojude Oba, Ijebu citizens have shown us that unity will always lead to progress, and that there is strength in unity. This is a shining example for us all.

“When we talk about the resilience and dynamism of culture, Ojude Oba is a case in point. It is always wonderful to see this proud display of culture that you have consistently showcased for over a hundred years.

I expect that memories of today will linger on in the minds of all who are here, or see the images. The visual feast of the Regberegbes (Age Grades) is already well known and iconic, as they present themselves before Kabiyesi in colourful uniform attires made with creativity and flair, and pray for his continued health and long life.

Also famous is the equestrian parade by the Baloguns of the Ruling Houses, memorable for its display of a noble tradition. I must admit that this part of the festival holds a special appeal for me, due to its similarity to the Durbar in my part of the country, the latest of which we held in Ilorin just on Thursday.

In the array of sartorial tradition of this festival, as evident in the impressive attires worn by the various groups, Ojude Oba promotes and reinforces the culture of the people.

“Indeed, there is much assurance in the knowledge that these activities are in a continuum with the past; they show that we can always draw the best from that glorious past to shore us up for the challenges

“While Ojude Oba provides a platform for the Ijebus to meet, interact and showcase their cultural heritage, we also know that the significance of the festival goes much deeper. Typically held on the third day after Eid el Kabir, this is a festival that unites the faiths.

“Despite its origins in Islam, the festival does not exclude any religious groups. I would like to say, with some emphasis, that our dear country, Nigeria, would do well to draw important lessons from an event such as this.

“We are one. Religion should not constitute a wedge or barrier between us. This is what illustrious Ijebu people demonstrate to us yearly with this festival. Muslims, Christians and others can be found among us here today, and I understand that this is how it has been since the very beginning.

“This is salutary, and worthy of commendation to Nigeria and the world.  In addition, Ojude Oba affirms that Nigeria’s cultures are veritable sources of revenue, if well packaged. With the return of thousandsof people to their ancestral homes for this festival, and thousands more attending as visitors, the local economy will, without a doubt, get a boost.

“This is tourism in action. Essentially, domestic tourism is being promoted here, and this is how it should be all over the country. It is therefore necessary for more parts of Nigeria to follow this worthy example, in order to showcase the beauty of our culture to the larger world,” Saraki said.

In attendance at this year Ojude Oba include the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Yetunde Onanuga, former governor Gbenga Daniel, Senator Gbenga Kaka, Oloori Omooba Subomi Balogun, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, Dr. Doyin Okupe, Speaker Suraju Adekunbi among others.

  • Nigerians in diaspora reject CCT act amendment

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Scandinavia, Ayoola Lawal has described the ongoing attempt by the senate to amend the Code of Conduct Tribunal Act as a shameful and illegal act that must be resisted by all means.
He made this known on Monday in a  press statement, stressing that members of the Red Chamber cannot be talking about amendment of the CCT Act when the present administration is fighting the main scourge of Nigeria, corruption, by all means.

Ayoola noted that many constitutional lawyers have remarked that the project is dead on arrival because it is a constitutional matter and ‘the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria cannot be amended by an act of the National Assembly.

Ayoola quoted one of the senior lawyers saying: “The sections they are trying to amend are clearly stated in the constitution and could only be reviewed through a legally acceptable constitution amendment process.”
The Chairman, APC Scandinavia, also quoted a statement credited to Senator Biodun Olujimi (PDP-Ekiti State) on an online news source, during the second reading of the bill last Thursday.
According to Ayoola, Olujimi said: “If you don’t assist your neighbor when his house is burning, it will extend to yours.”

However, APC chief noted that the statement credited to Olujimi further confirmed the sentiment in the air that the senate are trying to suddenly change the law to save the senate president, Senator Bukola Saraki, who has been standing trial for alleged asset declaration.
“It is a pity that such a comment could be credited to someone who claimed to be defending the mandate of his people and the integrity of the Nigerian state.
“It will be insane for anyone to try to save just a neighbor when an entire institution that is a pillar to the nation will be under siege in such attempt. Such a statement calls for the appropriate authority and the citizens to put such a person or group of people under watch.

“If the other members of the Nigerian senate can not stop the peddlers of the illegal act who are smearing the image of the senate of Nigeria, we will take the appreciate steps to in filing a case against them before the international community which Nigeria is a signatory member on such related matters.

“Meanwhile, I implore we citizens to keep eyes on the people at the helms of affairs who are trying to take us backward wasting taxpayer’s money and playing politics devoid of morality and common sense.
“Nigeria deserves men of integrity and honor with the fire of patriotism in the helms of affairs of legislation and across the board and not otherwise. God bless Nigeria,” he maintained.

  • Appeal Court affirms election of two Ekiti senators

The Senator representing Ekiti South senatorial district, Mrs. Abiodun Olujimi and her counterpart in Ekiti Central, Mrs. Fatimat Rasaki on Thursday retained their seats as the Court of Appeal sitting in Ado Ekiti confirmed their election.

The two senators had their elections upheld by the National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal on September 29 and 30 respectively.

The victory of Olujimi, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the March 28 poll, was being challenged by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Anthony Adeniyi.

Adeniyi wanted Mrs. Olujimi’s election nullified on grounds that she was not qualified to run, claiming that she was a member of the National Communications Commission (NCC) board at the time she contested. The appellant also claimed that the senator did not resign her appointment within the time allowed by law.

The APC candidate in Ekiti Central, Gbenga Olofin, alleged that the election conducted in the senatorial district was marred by violence, corrupt practices and that Mrs. Rasaki was not validly elected by lawful votes cast at the poll.

The PDC and its candidate, Lawal Olutunde who also filed petition against the election of the PDP candidate (Mrs. Rasaki) are claiming that they were wrongfully excluded from participating in the senatorial poll.

Delivering judgment in the appeal filed by Adeniyi, panel chairman, Justice Sidi Bage held that the Olujimi was eligible to contest having resigned her appointment as a board member of NCC within the 30 days allowed by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

  • Olujimi absolves Fayose of complicity

    Olujimi absolves Fayose of complicity

Former Ekiti State Deputy Governor Mrs. Abiodun Olujimi has absolved Governor Ayo Fayose of complicity in the leadership crisis rocking the House of Assembly.

Speaking in an interview with The Nation, Mrs. Olujimi exonerated Fayose from last Thursday’s “impeachment” of Speaker Adewale Omirin, saying the change of leadership was the internal affairs of the lawmakers.

The former deputy governor said Fayose’s alleged complicity “was hearsay” that the governor’s opponents would work hard to prove because the desire to change the House leadership predates Fayose’s return to power.

Mrs. Olujimi maintained that the governor will always resist “every attempt to control the state from outside”, saying Ekiti people “are stubborn on principle and ready to defend their pride and integrity”.

Explaining further on why the PDP caucus chose to “elect” Dele Olugbemi as “speaker”, she said the action of pro-Fayose lawmakers was in tandem with the wishes of people.

“My take on this issue is that the House does not have a rigid system and being in that position is by election and by the will of members. It has nothing to do with the governor and it has nothing to do with any personality.

“There is a prescribed way of doing it and everybody is equal in the House and it is when you are elected as the speaker that you now have the privilege of coordinating the affairs of the House. You are first a member before your colleagues elect you.

“In the House, they know what they are doing, those who did it know what they are doing. So, it is by freewill and it happens a lot when you have a body of equals.

“Look, the people in the House know themselves; it was the House of opposition and not the House of PDP.

“We saw what happened in Edo State and we saw what happened in Ogun State at one time or the other and that is the House of Assembly for you because it is autonomous.

“But I want to make this point clear, the moment you are elected (as Speaker), you must drop the garb of politics you must know that you are there to defend the interest of the state and wishes of the people.

“You have a group of people taking orders from outside and this is what our people in Ekiti don’t want and that was why they demonstrated in support of the emergence of a new speaker.

“In Ekiti, we are homogeneous, if anything happens in Ado, the people in Omuo will know because we are a homogeneous entity.

“Therefore, linking Governor Fayose with what happened in the House is hearsay and nobody can enslave Ekiti people. I know Governor Fayose very well that he will resist every attempt to control our state from outside.”

  • Fayose’s, Biodun Olujimi’s feud enters second phase?

Fayose’s, Biodun Olujimi’s feud enters second phase?

If you believe that former Ekiti State governor and PDP gubernatorial candidate in the forthcoming governorship election in the state, Ayo Fayose, has made peace with his erstwhile deputy, Abiodun Olujimi, you’ll believe anything. The duo are allegedly bracing up for another round of their head-long collision, putting paid to talks that the seeming silence between the duo has finally ended their protracted ill-feelings towards each other.

Since Fayose got the PDP ticket, many thought they will bury the hatchet and start working together again. But as things stand, there is no end in sight to the battle between them.

It will be recalled that while the reign of Ayodele Fayose as governor of Ekiti State lasted, Biodun Olujimi was one of the powerful pillars that upheld the government. She lived the life of a powerful politician, not tolerating any opposition when matters involved Fayose. She was blindly loyal to her boss. But the romance started experiencing fits of hiccups when Fayose was dislodged from the Government House in 2007.

With Fayose out of government, some of his aides had to also find where the pasture is greener, or at least where it would remain green. The crack between the former allies began to appear when former Governor Segun Oni appointed Biodun as Commissioner for Works.
