N100m work tools for 1,000 constituents in Oyo

Many residents of Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso areas of Oyo State will always be grateful to their representative at the National Assembly. They will continue to be thankful to him because Senator Fatai Buhari, who represents Oyo North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, enhanced their economic life by giving out several empowerment items to some members of his constituency and supporters.

The items, which included 32 cars and buses, 230 motorcycles, 14 electric transformers, power generating sets, sewing machines, grinding machines, scholarship awards and cash were estimated at a whopping N100 million.

Buhari, who has a knack for generosity and grassroots politics, grinned continuously as he received Governor Abiola Ajimobi and the leading traditional rulers across the senatorial district at the permanent site of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Iseyin where the programme held.

Just as the people were empowered with tools to boost their economic well-being, all the major palaces in the district also received cars for logistic purposess. The palaces were those of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Aseyin of Iseyin, Onpetu of Ijeru, Baggi of Saki, Olokakaa of Okakaa, Onjo of Oke ‘ho, Sabi Iganna of Iganna, Alago-Amodu, Onitede of Tede, Iba of Kisi, Onigbeti, Onigboho, and the Secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ogbomoso.

Other beneficiaries included the League of Imams and Alfas in Oke-Ogun and its counterpart in Ogbomoso, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in both areas, Arewa Community in Oke-Ogun, Federation of Oyo State Students and the Ogbomoso branch of NASFAT.

Addressing the gathering, Senator Buhari pledged that the entire All Progressives Congress (APC) would not disappoint Nigerians, even as he appreciated their patience, steadfastness and resilience in the last 32 months. He recalled that the current administration inherited serious economic, social and security challenges which were being gradually addressed.

He said the items of empowerment were continuation of the first which he undertook in 2016 in Saki during which 1,125 people were beneficiaries of different tools and cash gifts.

“Our commitment to quality representation and empowerment of people of Oyo North Senatorial District is the thrust of the mandate you gave me in the 2015 National Assembly election; and I want to reiterate our resolve to always strive to represent you like never before and put smiles on the faces of the people,” Buhari assured the constituents.

He further explained that he could not make anyone wealthy but could only put smiles on their faces. The senator urged the beneficiaries to put the tools to good use.

Governor Ajimobi commended Buhari for his contributions at the floor of the Senate as well as the quality empowerments he has been carrying out for his constituents. Judging from the quality and quantity of the tools in addition to his law-making acumen, Ajimobi declared Buhari as the best Senator the state has ever produced.

He said the party did not regret handing over the Senatorial ticket to him in 2015 because he has performed beyond expectation.

Earlier, the Chairman, APC in Oyo State, Chief Akin Oke, hailed Buhari for always connecting with his constituents, stressing that he was a good representative of the party.

At the event were the Onitede of Tede, Oba Rafiu Adebimpe; Onigboho of Igboho, Oba John Oyekola; representative of Bagi of Saki, Chief Rasheed Kasali; Olokakaa of Okakaa, Oba Abdulazeez Ogelende as well as Muslim and Christian clerics.

Ajimobi’s son’s wedding: Oyo APC berates critics on Buhari’s attendance

The All Progressives Congress, APC in Oyo State has taken a swipe on those who have criticized President Muhammadu Buhari for attending the wedding ceremony between Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s son and Governor Abdulahi Ganduje’s daughter in Kano on Saturday.

Critics had condemned Buhari for attending the wedding in the midst of reports of killings in different states in the north and abduction of 110 school girls in Dapchi, Yobe State.

But the party in Oyo State said the critics have acted in bad faith, politicizing everything happening in the society.

President Buhari, 22 State governors as well as other dignitaries had defied political, religious and ethnic sentiments to converge in Kano on Saturday to witness the solemnization of marriage between Idris Ajimobi and Fatimah Ganduje  in what could be described as the wedding ceremony of the year.

In a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC observed that the event was not held to downplay the mood of the nation as it concerns the security situation in some parts of the country particularly in states where nefarious activities of the Boko Haram insurgents and killer herdsmen have taken a new turn for the worse.

“Without any fear of contradictions, a new chapter was opened in the history book of the nation on Saturday when another solid foundation was laid for the unity, oneness and togetherness of the Nigerian people. At a time that fear of disintegration heightened as a result of the unpatriotic activities of some disgruntled elements, a marriage of this nature was a necessity to rescue the situation and ensure that Nigeria remain an indivisible entity.

“Rather than cut the nose to spite the face, critics of President Buhari should appreciate him for being passionate and affectionate to the cause of nationhood. This was a leader who had decimated the ranks of the Boko Haram insurgents as against what was obtained before May, 2015. But for him, terrorists would have overrun Nigeria and most people within and outside the country can attest to this fact.

“Meanwhile, hope keeps rising for the return of the school girls recently abducted in Dapchi, Yobe State as well as their remaining counterparts from Chibok girls who were kidnapped in 2014 on account of different results-oriented measures already put in place by the federal government. All we need do as a people is to intensify prayers for the safe returns of these innocent girls as well as other captives in the hands of terrorists anywhere in the world.
“At this juncture, it is imperative to make a passionate appeal to unscrupulous politicians who are found of politicizing every issue to desist from such act. It should be noted that a President of any nation is for all the people of such country regardless of their mood or current situation. While a President shows empathy for the depressed, nothing should stop him from identifying with those with genuine cause of celebration at the same time.
“By and large, we use this opportunity to express our profound gratitude to Mr. President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi (The Alaafin of Oyo), Alhaji Sanusi Lamido (The Emir of Kano) and other eminent personalities who graced the occasion. It is our sincere prayer that God will bless the new couple and make their Union a fruitful one.” APC added.

Oyo: Contractors to pay security levy for safe city project

In line with the laws that set it up, the Oyo State Security Trust Fund is set to implement a compulsory security levy across Oyo State. The levy according to the government  would be tailor-made to suit the economic profile of the state as well allow corporate bodies, individuals and all residents to contribute to the security of the state.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi made the disclosure, while addressing stakeholders at a town hall meeting entitled: ‘Public-Private Partnership in Security Funding: Introduction of Security Levy in Oyo State,’ organised by OYSSTF at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.
An enabling law of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF) as amended by the state House of Assembly, the Governor said, was to pave way for the operation of a private sector driven OYSSTF to incorporate the introduction of the security levy into law to the effect that corporate organisations, religious and other social bodies are made to pay yearly security levies to the Trust Fund.

Ajimobi, who was represented by his deputy, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, stated that the security levy was introduced “to ensure that all stakeholders fulfill their roles as responsible citizens of the state and by contributing their quota to the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in Oyo State.

“It is not in doubt that our security agencies have faced a serious shortfall in funding. Funding Oyo State Security Trust Fund is the key to achieving all these goals. On our part, this hover has granted a one per cent security tax on all contracts executed on behalf of the state government, and I am also aware that these deductions have assisted the Fund in the past year.

“For the furtherance of our agenda on safety and security, we have embraced the safe city project, which will proffer cutting edge solutions that will nip crime and criminality in the bud, especially in our major townships. We are currently installing closed circuit television (CCTV) in black spots and business districts in the city to enhance our security architecture. I ask all the stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of the security levy collection exercise that is to commence shortly.
“We inaugurated the joint security outfit codenamed ‘Operation Burst’ with six zonal commands. To give the outfit the needed bite, we procured armoured personnel carriers, a fleet of patrol vehicles and equipped them with state-of-the-earth communication equipment for their operations.

“To enlist the support of stakeholders,  we went a step further by floating the Oyo State Security Trust Fund to raise funds for the improvement of the security architecture of the state. The result of these efforts is a drastic reduction in crime rate and civil unrest manifesting in no major crime or robbery in the last six years”, he said

Speaking, Chairman, OYSSTF, Bayo Adelabu, said the organisation intends to transform the security apparatus in the state from being a reactionary one to an anticipatory one,  saying, “ this vision can be achieved only if there is an upward review in funding of areas such as rehabilitation of existing barracks and quarters, procurement of arms and ammunition, purchase of vehicles, helicopters, surveillance cameras and maintenance of existing stocks as well as procurement of kits and basic equipment for officers.”

Adelabu, who stated that OYSSTF has donated 66 Hilux vans to security agencies, noted that other areas of concern include the establishment of forensic laboratories and upgrade of all police stations across the state to be information technology compliant, as provided for in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
Adelabu said, “A proper fund base is needed for this transformation and the security level will be tailor-made to suit the economic profile of Oyo State. With proper fund base, Oyo State Security Trust Fund will channel these funds to the weak spots within the state security apparatus.”

Commissioner of Police in the state,  Mr. Abiodun Odude, commended the Governor Ajimobi-led administration for putting OYSSTF and ‘Operation Burst’ in place, saying with this, the government has placed security issues on the front burner. He added that security agencies have been trying their best with government’s support to nip crime and criminality in the bud, noting that security is a collective responsibility of all and sundry.

According to him,  in the last one year, the police “have arrested more than 1,000 members of ‘One Million Boys’ and we have charged over 400 of them to court, ” saying the police need intelligence to work with.

President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Yemi Soladoye, urged the OYSSTF to identify the peculiarities of each zone of the state such as Ibadan, Oke-Ogun, Oyo, Ogbomoso, and Ibarapa with a view to tackling insecurity headlong.

He advised that eminent people from each of the zones should be captured into sub-committees for their cities in order to ensure the effectiveness of the project.

The town hall meeting was attended by top government functionaries, members of the state executive council, service commanders in the states, royal fathers, religious leaders, traditional leaders, community leaders, sociocultural groups, traders, local security groups, artisan, representatives of market women among others.

But he also acknowledged that the population of the area is about 20 per cent of the entire state, making it compulsory for them to work with other zones to realize their dream.
