  • Suspected kidnapper granted bail

    An electrician, Ramon Suleiman, 33, was on Thursday granted N100,000 bail by an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court  over alleged kidnap attempt.

    Suleiman was also ordered to produce two sureties in like sum.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Abiona Richard, directed that one of the sureties must be his blood relation with means of identification, while the other must be a civil servant on Grade level 9.

    She then adjourned the case until June 27 for hearing.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Suleiman, residing on Iwo Road in Ibadan, allegedly attempted to kidnap a child from Aba-Ode Estate, Soka, Ibadan.

    The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Salewa Hammed, told the court that Suleiman was caught loitering in the area in an attempt to kidnap the child on May 21 at about 5.00 p.m. Hammed said that the accused took to his heels when he was being questioned by the police.

    “He was later apprehended by landlords in the area and handed over to the police,’’ Hammed said.

    Hammed said the offence contravened Section 508 and punishable under Section 509 of the Criminal Code Caps 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.

    The magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum, she, adjourned the case till June 27 for mention.

    Court remands three in prison for murder, armed robbery

    Three men; Tunde Jimoh, 37, Gbenga Babalade , 40, and Olatunji Hammed were on Wednesday  remanded at Agodi Prison by an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, Oyo State, for alleged murder of Akinteye Oyeyemi for money ritual.

    They were also alleged to have been involved in robbing the deceased of N100,000 cash.

    The chief magistrate, Mrs Abiona Richard, in her ruling said the accused should be remanded in Agodi Prison pending the outcome of the case file at the Oyo State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

    The pleas by Jimoh of Yide Area, Babalade of Ijagbo Village, and Hammed, an Alfa from Mascut Tofans Area, Ijagbo, all in Offa in Kwara State, were not taken by the court.

    The chief magistrate adjourned the case until May 8, for mention.

    The trio, were in court on a five-count charge of conspiracy, murder, armed robbery, unlawful possession of a gun and concealing of information.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Ogunremi, told the court that Jimoh and Babalade allegedly conspired to commit felony to wit murder.

    “Between 3 p.m. of Feb. 24, and 1a.m. of Feb.25, between Atiba-Oyo Area in Oyo state and Igbo-Nla Area of Kwara , they allegedly killed one Akinteye Oyeyemi.

    “The duo allegedly killed Akinteye with the intent to use his heart for money ritual, while armed with single barrel cut-to-size gun, a cutlass and a knife, and also robbed him of N100, 000 cash they found on him.

    `Jimoh and Babalade on March14 were alleged to have unlawfully had in their possession one cut-to-size gun with two life cartridges.

    “The third accused person, Olatunji was alleged to have assisted Jimoh and Babalade, whom to his knowledge have committed a criminal offence of murder, intentionally concealed the information.

    “Olatunji was alleged to have failed to report the offence to the police thereby becoming accessory to the fact of murder,’’ Ogunremi said.

    He said that the crime was reported to the police by the deceased wife, Mrs Bukola Akinteye of Oyo town, after she could not locate her husband’s movement again through the phone.

    Ogunremi said the offence contravened Sections 319, 322 and 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

    The offence also contravened Sections 1 (2) (a) & (b) and 3 (1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

     

  • Artisans bag two years imprisonment for theft

    An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan on Tuesday sentenced two artisans, Babalola Akeem, 25, and Seyi Sanni, 23, to two years imprisonment for stealing a N1.7 million Jacuzzi engine.

    Delivering judgment, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Abiona Richard, convicted the two men after they pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing, and sentenced them to two years imprisonment at the Agodi prisons in Ibadan.

    Richard sentenced each of them to six months imprisonment for conspiracy and two years for stealing, both to run concurrently.

    The magistrate said that the sentences were without an option of fine and should be served with hard labour.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Babalola, a carpenter, of Oke Seni area of Ibadan and Sanni, a mechanic at Mokola, were arraigned on charges of conspiracy and stealing.

    They were charged alongside one Saheed Saka, 32, of Agbeni area, Ibadan, alleged to have received three pieces of Jacuzzi engine stolen by Babalola.

    Saka, however, maintained his not guilty plea and the court ordered his continued remanded in prison custody and adjourned his trial to May 23.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Ogunremi, told the court that Babalola and Sanni conspired to steal five pieces of Jacuzzi engines valued at N1,500,000 at a building site where they worked.

    Ogunremi said that the artisans also stole 16mm roll of cable valued at N180,000 and tiles worth N50,000, which they sold to Saka, who knew fully well that the items were stolen or unlawfully possessed.

    The prosecutor said that the complainant, Mr Rasak Afeez, reported the theft and handed the artisans over to the police.

    Ogunremi said the offences were committed sometime in January at the building site of Hammond Court Hotel at Oke -Itunu area, Mokola, Ibadan.

    He said the offences contravened Section 383, 427, 516 and were punishable under Section 390 (6) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

    NAN reports that Babalola, Sanni and Saka were arraigned on Feb. 23, before the court and had all pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail.

    Babalola and Sanni were granted bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties each, while Saheed was admitted to bail in the sum of N400, 000 with two sureties.

    The accused were, however, unable to perfect their bail conditions and were remanded in prison.

    However, at a subsequent hearing of the case, the defence counsel, Mr Tunde Gade, appeared for Babalola and Sanni, who then changed their pleas to guilty, while Saka maintained his innocence.

  • Man faces N4.5m truck theft charge, gets N2m bail

    A 35- year-old driver, Akeem Yusuf, who allegedly stole an articulated vehicle worth N4.5 million, was on Wednesday brought  before an Ibandan Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting at Iyaganku.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    According to the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Salewa Hammed, Yusuf and others now at large conspired to commit the offence of stealing on Feb. 12 at about 4.00 p.m. at Olorunsogo area of Ibadan on the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway.

    Hammed alleged that the accused stole an articulated vehicle with registration no. LND 746 XF valued at  N4. 5 million, property of  the complainant, Mr Sheriff Olatunbosun.

    The offences contravened Sections 390 (9), (10a) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Abiona Richard, in her ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum, one of who must be a blood relation of the accused and must possess a national identity card.

    The other surety must be a civil servant not less than Grade Level 10.

    The case was adjourned until May 9 for mention.
