  • Suspected cultists set house, cars ablaze

•Stop fire fighters from containing outbreak

Suspected cultists yesterday burned down a building and two vehicles at Ogijo, Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb.

The arsonists were said to have attacked the properties belonging to the father of a leader in a rival cult group, located beside Omoleye hospital in Ogijo.

It was learnt that the groups have had several clashes in the neighbourhood, destroying properties and valuables.

The Nation gathered that the attacks forced residents to flee their homes for fear of being hurt by the cultists.

Before the hoodlums set the house ablaze, they damaged two vehicles parked in the compound.

They were said to have poured petrol on the building and lit it, keeping watch to ensure it was completely razed.

Fire fighters at Ikorodu, who got to the scene to quench the fire were obstructed by the cultists, who threatened to also set fire on them and their truck if they do not vacate the premises.

Confirming the development, the state fire service director, Rasaq Fadipe said the arson was reported at about 10:26am.

Fadipe said: “Someone ran to the station to report the outbreak and our men moved to the site to contain it. But some boys came around and halted them from quenching the fire. They threatened to burn the men and the truck if they don’t leave the site. I do not know why they set the building ablaze but I learnt it belonged to the father of a rival cult member.”

Fadipe also admitted that the fire service attended to a distress call at the Pan African University.

According to him, the call was received at about 3:40pm, adding that the inferno started at the school’s diesel tank that supplies its generator.

He said the fire destroyed the tank, the generator, as well as a PHCN cable.

While warning Lagos residents to be safety conscious especially as the dry season approaches, Fadipe said the agency attended to six other cases yesterday.

He said: “We attended to a fire call at 11 Ihuntayi Street in Lekki; there was also a fire outbreak which affected two buildings of eight rooms each at Muri Ojora Street, Amukoko.

“Then, a confectionery factory at 5 /6 Peter Olu Ajayi Street, Agbado was gutted by fire, but our quick intervention saved the day; a restaurant at Ijaiye, Ogba also caught fire, thankfully, we were able to contain the fire there so that it does not spread into other shops and a bank beside it.

“There was also a call of a drunk driver who was involved in a lone accident at Ebute Ero. By the time we got there, policemen were already at the scene and the man identified as Kasumu, claimed two of his passengers fell into the river.

“But a search was conducted and no one was found in the river. You can see that most of the cases were caused by carelessness. People have to be careful especially now that the dry season is near,” he said.

  • Robbers kill hotelier, five others, set two ablaze

Robbers kill hotelier, five others, set two ablaze

The owner of popular 04 Hotels in Ajah, a suburb of Lagos, was yesterday killed by suspected armed robbers.

It was gathered that five other servants at the hotel were also killed while two others were set ablaze.

Unconfirmed reports said the hotelier’s wife was also shot. The Nation also learnt that vehicles and other valuables in the hotel were also set ablaze by the robbers, while two persons sustained gunshot injuries.

They were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

It was learnt that the bandits stormed the hotel around 3am and operated for over two hours, killing its owner identified as Olanrewaju.

A source told The Nation: “The gunmen came for Olanrewaju but ended up shooting others in the process. They killed his girlfriend who was with him and two others. They then shot at two others, but those ones did not die.

“The shootings sparked fire and two customers, who were in another room, were burnt to death. The fire continued to rage, so we had no choice but to call on the fire service.”

A police source said: “A notorious armed robber was arrested at the same hotel sometime ago. We are working on the assumption that members of his gang came on a revenge mission. The robbers probably wanted to make an impression. We will get them.”

Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident, said she was still gathering facts about the matter.

She, however, confirmed that the owner of the hotel was killed, but was not yet aware of any other casualty. Braide added: “The Area Commander got a distress call and quickly swung into action. He raced down to the scene with his men. The robbers saw them and opened fire, while attempting to escape. The police chased the robbers and there was an exchange of gun fire. One of the robbers was killed and an AK47 rifle was recovered from him.

“It was after the policemen reached the hotel that they discovered that the owner of the hotel had been killed. People in the hotel told policemen that the robbers shot and killed the hotel owner because they believed he was the person who gave information to SARS men which led to the arrest of their leader. They were on a revenge mission,” the source said.

The arsonists were said to have attacked the church, also known as Ori-Oke Majemu Agbara, about 12:30am.

The Pastor, Paul Adekeye, said the building had been badly burnt before they became aware and invited fire fighters to put out the fire.

He said they have reported the matter to the police and the Department of Security Service.

Gunmen raid Potiskum, kill DPO, set bank ablaze

POTISKUM – the commercial nerve centre of Yobe State – was yesterday invaded by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members.

The invaders engaged security operatives in a gun duel, killing a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and setting a bank branch ablaze.

The Unity Bank Plc branch on NPN Road was set ablaze by the gunmen.

Joint Task Force (JTF) spokesman Lt. Lazarus Eli confirmed the incident to reporters in Damaturu, the state capital, yesterday.

There was no official statement on the loss suffered by the affected bank, but there were strong indications that the raiders stole unspecified amount of money from the vault before they set the bank on fire.

The JTF spokesman said: “At about 2am, unknown gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists, attacked the Police Area Command, NPN Road, Potiskum. Men of JTF promptly reinforced the police to repel the attack.

“The bodies of three of the suspected terrorists killed were recovered and 10 other bodies were suspected to have been carried away by the terrorists. The DPO died in the hospital as a result of gunshot injuries he sustained during the attack.

“JTF assures residents of adequate security measures to safeguard lives and property and wishes to appeal for calm.”
