  • Your role in preventing miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth and preterm explained (3)

This is the concluding part of last week’s article. Another method of family planning is the use of condoms by both men and women. It’s safe and helps to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

Condom is available in most pharmacies and shops without the need for prescriptions. Hormones, such as the daily pill can also be used too. Two or three monthly injections are other choices. Devices, such as intra-uterine devices, are another effective method of contraception. In a stable couple that had completed their children, vasectomy by the man or Fallopian tube ligation by the woman are effective permanent contraceptive methods. The choice of contraception method will depend on the age of the user, the urgency, reason for the contraception as well as any need to address any other illness in the man or woman.

The reader will recall that in Part 1 of this series; we discussed the differences between miscarriage and deliberate termination of unwanted pregnancy or abortion either as therapeutic abortion or termination for non-medical reason.

In this article, we will look at Miscarriage, what causes it and how to deal with it as well as how to prevent miscarriage. Unlike abortion that is intentional, miscarriage is a desirable pregnancy that could not continue to viability. The experience causes extreme distress to the woman and the male partner.  It’s even more painful if the pregnancy is one that has been sought for some time otherwise called “precious pregnancy”.

What causes miscarriage? Age: Maternal age and number of previous miscarriages are two risk factors for a further miscarriage. As the mother ages, her eggs (oocytes are also aging). Therefore, aging oocytes (eggs) are candidates for a pregnancy at the risk of being miscarried. As we shall see below, the advancing age is not to say that miscarriage does not occur in younger women. It does. The risk of miscarriage is highest among couples where the woman’s age is greater than 35 and the man is over 40.

Also, one miscarriage begets another miscarriage. The risk of a further miscarriage increases after each successive pregnancy loss. Combined with advancing age, the outlook for the woman worsens if there had been previous miscarriages.  Maternal cigarette smoking and caffeine consumption have been associated with an increased risk of spontaneous miscarriage according to Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK).  Meanwhile, heavy alcohol consumption is toxic to the embryo and the developing foetus. There are some disease states that very often lead to miscarriages.  Among them is the disorder that is called Antiphospholipid syndrome. The good news is that antiphospholipid syndrome is the most important treatable cause of recurrent miscarriage.

Sadly, two to five per cent of couples could be born with genetic errors. One of such is what is clinically termed Robertsonian translocation could, unfortunately, occur in one parent thus leading to miscarriages. Although carriers of the said error are usually physically normal, their pregnancies are at increased risk of miscarriage and may result even in a live birth of babies with multiple inborn malformation and/or mental disability which is due to a poor chromosomal arrangement.

I had earlier mentioned problems that increasing maternal age may bring such problems as deformed eggs (oocytes). In some couples with recurrent miscarriage, chromosomal abnormalities of the miscarried pregnancy account for over half of further miscarriages.

Focusing on the particular woman (potential mother) for the moment, a lot of miscarriages occur because of badly formed womb (uterine abnormalities/malformations).  Generally, the frequency of occurrence of uterine malformations appears to be higher in women suffering miscarriages in the second quarter of pregnancy as compared to the first quarter of pregnancy. Quiet often, such miscarriages are due to weakness in the neck (cervical weakness) of the womb of the woman.  Cervical weakness (cervical incompetence) is a recognised cause of second quarter miscarriages. In our environment in Nigeria and indeed in Africa, cervical weakness is commonly occurring as a result of frequent surgical abortion (legal or illegal) procedures that affect the neck of the womb.

In a lot of ways, some physical illnesses in the woman may lead to miscarriages. Diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease, have been associated with miscarriage. Women with diabetes who have high uncontrolled blood sugar level in the first quarter of pregnancy are at risk of miscarriage and foetal malformation. However, well-controlled diabetes mellitus is not a risk factor for recurrent miscarriage, nor is treated diseases of the thyroid.

Yet, diseases, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), have been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a frequent cause of infertility in women. Still, when the pregnancy does occur, the pregnancy is vulnerable to miscarriage.

Infection and any serious infection for that matter, is a threat to any pregnancy. Any infection that tends to stay for a long time in the reproductive tract of a woman carries a risk to potential pregnancy. Example, the presence of bacterial vaginosis in the first quarter of pregnancy, has been reported as a risk factor for second quarter miscarriage and preterm delivery of the baby.

Finally, some diseases of the blood such as inherited thrombophilias have been implicated as a possible cause in recurrent miscarriage and late pregnancy complications. In the next article, we will look at what investigations can be done to address miscarriages and what solutions that is available including the role that you can play.

  • Preventing miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth and preterm (2)

On this note, let us begin the difficult task of dealing with  the reasons for Induced Abortion.

It’s an ironical that while millions of women are desperately looking for babies, others are either having unwanted babies or terminating credible pregnancies of viable and non-deformed foetus.

The most common reason for abortion is unplanned pregnancy caused by unprotected sex or failed protection. Abortion may also result from unwanted pregnancy – that is pregnancy that was initially desired but no longer wanted. Other reasons may be rape, incest or social shame and embarrassment.

Likely Consequences of Abortion:  Earlier I mentioned that abortion can be caused by a medical reason or it may be due to what the law sees as illegal.

Induced Abortion is not without consequences.  First, let us deal with potential risky outcomes in illegal abortion. When induced abortion is handled by qualified medical doctor, the medic ensures that certain dangers are avoided or minimised. This may not be so in induced illegal abortion in the hands of quacks.

Bleeding: The victim could bleed seriously depending on the age of the pregnancy. Such may be so much as to cost the woman her life if care is not taken. Even if blood is transfused, transfusion also carries many risks.

Infection:  Very often, illegal abortion is done in an unhygienic environment. Thus, the procedure may give rise to infection of the womb which may lead to infertility. The blood may also be infected with serious bacteria. This outcome may cause septicaemia and if left untreated, may lead to death.  In inexpert hands, perforation or severe damage of the womb, gut, and other internal organs may leave the woman severely injured.  As mentioned, all these complications may cause the woman to become infertile after the abortion.  Abortion  causes Asherman syndrome in which the lining of the womb get stuck, thus not allowing menstrual blood flow to pass out and sperm to migrate into the womb for egg fertlisation.

Guilt and mental health issues: Depending on the disposition of the woman, she may feel guilty of having “killed” a person. She may become anxious and even depressed. All these may subsequently affect her sexual life as well as impair the relationship with her partner.

Infertility could result from excessive vaginal bleeding during or after an abortion or childlessness could result from infection that was introduced into the woman’s reproductive tract during the abortion procedure.  In addition, Asherman’s syndrome which I explained above could cause the woman and hence the couple to become childless.

Death: The woman may die from anaesthesia or as a result of infection or excessive bleeding.

Therapeutic Abortion: However, therapeutic abortion (abortion done for medical reason) can be as a result of illness in the mother or to prevent mental or physical illness in the mother. Examples of this is hypertension or preeclapsia that occurs in pregnancy.

On the other hand, abortion can also be done because of severe malformation of the foetus in which if such foetus was to be allowed to term, it may lead to impairment of the physical or mental health of the mother.

Moreover, there are controversial areas where request for abortion is not clear cut.  Example of this is rape of the woman. Another important controversial event is incest where a member of the same family impregnates a woman in the same lineage. To most reasonable individuals and societies, incest is an abomination and any pregnancy resulting from it should not stand. The same can be said of rape by known or unknown persons. However, the critical test is if continuing the pregnancy will affect the mental and physical health of the woman that is involved. If any of these traumatic events will cause harm to the woman (victim), then abortion may be carried out according to the law.

    Unwanted consequences of therapeutic/medical abortion

In general, in medical hands with poor clinical skills, lapses may occur such that the consequences of therapeutic abortion may mirror that of abortion in the hands of quarks or in the hands of non-medical personnel.

Thus, abortion done by a competent medical doctor will guide against excessive bleeding, infection and ensure that the woman enjoys her reproductive rights.

    Prevention of Illegal Abortions

The first and, perhaps the most important preventive measure, is education. An informed woman who understands the way her body functions and is well-motivated to promote her own health, will likely take steps not to get an unwanted pregnancy. This is likely to lead her to take preventive measures. Such will  include counselling. This will enlighten her about her body and its functions.

Also, the healthcare worker may inform the woman about family planning. These include abstinence and calendar (calculation of ovulation periods), especially for a religious individual, who may object   other physical or chemical methods of family planning.

The next set of articles will explore miscarriage otherwise called spontaneous abortion.

  • Knights to hold vigil on abortion, mounts campaign on sex education

Knights to hold vigil on abortion, mounts campaign on sex education

Knights of the Order of Saint Mulumba in collaboration with the Family and Human Life Unit, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos have concluded all arrangements to hold a reparation vigil on abortion.

Metropolitan Grand Knight, Lagos Metropolitan Council of the Order, Dr. Charles Mbelede addressing a press conference in Lagos said the programme holding September 16, 2016 at the Church of Transfiguration, Lekki, is to reiterate the stand of the Catholic Church on Zero tolerance on abortion. According to him, the vigil which forms part of the Order’s Pro-life activities is coming at the same time as the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Abortion, he said refers to any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or chemical abortion.

“Abortion ends a pregnancy by destroying and removing the developing child. According to medical experts, a baby’s heart is noticeable by 6 weeks and during the seventh through the tenth weeks, when the majority of abortions are performed, fingers and genitals appear and the child’s face is recognizably human. Abortion is pure murder,” he said.

Stressing the evils of abortion, Dr. Mbelede reechoed the words of Saint (Mother) Teresa who said: “The greatest destroyer of peace today is the cry of the innocent unborn child. For if a mother can murder her own child in her womb, what is left for you and for me to kill each other?”

He listed the risks associated with abortion to include; pelvic infection, blood clots in the uterus, heavy bleeding, cut or torn cervix and anesthesia related complications.

He also frowned at the use of contraceptives saying natural method is the only option approved by the Catholic Church.

A prolife consultant and representative of the President of Family Life Unit, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Dr. (Mrs.) Henrietta Williams  in own comments outlined the dangers of contraceptives and advised couples to go for natural family planning methods.

She stated that sex education that promotes spiritual and ethical values should be taught at homes and schools and not the one that promotes moral laxity.

Police parade ‘fake doctor’ over abortion in Oyo

A TWENTY-SIX-year-old fake doctor, Akilapa Johnson, has been arrested by the police for carrying out abortion operation on a 23-year-old woman, Barakat, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Commissioner of Police Leye Oyebade said this while parading Johnson and 14 other suspects at the command’s headquartres in Eleyele, Ibadan.

“The abortion was carried out in the suspect’s one bedroom apartment, which served as a clinic located in a slum at Sasa, Ibadan.

“Shortly after the abortion, the victim developed serious complications, which resulted in her being admitted at the University College Hospital (UCH), where she is presently lying ill. Investigation revealed that the fake doctor, an Ordinary Level (School Certificate) holder, was only trained as a paramedic nurse and a first aider.

“In spite of his limited knowledge of medicine, the suspect had consistently treated unsuspecting patients, who mistook him for a qualified doctor. Exhibits recovered from the suspects are:  two pieces of stethoscope, two pieces of Plaster of Paris bandage, four pairs of hand gloves, injection and syringe,” he said.

The suspect, who admitted to the crime, said he had his training as a paramedic nurse in Port Harcourt, River State

“It was one Azeez that brought Barakat to my house for the abortion. It was after the pills she took that she developed  the complication. I am regretting my actions now. I am only looking for a means of survival,” he said.

Also, the police recovered 226 stolen bags of cements from Babatunde Umoru and Mohammed Umoru during a stop and search by the command’s Swift Response Squad along Lagos-Ibadan road.

Oyebade said the suspects were arrested when conveying the stolen cement in a Liteace bus with registration number GBR 25 XA from Elebu to Oko-Ado area in Ibadan.

He said:” During investigation, it was discovered that the bags of cement found in their possession were stolen from the block industry of one Lawal Amubieya at Akala area, Elebu, Ibadan.

“Further investigation revealed that the suspects, who specialised in breaking into block industries and construction sites and stealing bags of cement, confessed to have stolen over 200 bags from two construction sites at Odo-Ona Apata and from a block industry at Elebu area between May and June, 2016. “

  • Court remands two in Ekiti over ‘fatal’ abortion

THE death of an 18-year-old girl, Funmbi Taiwo, in Ilawe Ekiti, the headquarters of Ekiti South West Local Government Area of Ekiti State, has landed two persons in prison custody.

A 21-year-old man Olanrewaju Olorunfemi and an 18-year-old female accomplice, Sadiat Akeem, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Ado Ekiti Magistrate’s Court for their alleged complicity in procuring abortion for Taiwo, which led to her death.

Olorunfemi was the boyfriend of the deceased and was alleged to have put her in a family way after having carnal knowledge of her.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Caleb Leramo told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 25 in Ilawe.

Leramo said the offence contravenes Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap C 16 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

  • Bayelsa: Police arrest man for aborting pregnancy of minor

Bayelsa: Police arrest man for aborting pregnancy of minor

The ‘quack doctor ‘ who allegedly aborted the four-month pregnancy of 12-year-old Bayelsa State girl, identified simply as Queen, has been arrested by the police.

The minor was allegedly raped serially and impregnated by her father, Bamekpa Ademe, who is currently being held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Bayelsa police command.

The police later launched manhunt on the man who crudely aborted the minor’s pregnancy under the instruction of Bamekpa.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Asinim Butswat, Friday, identified the arrested quack doctor as Mr. Fredrick Osai, who is 38 years old.

Butswat said Osai was arrested at his community in Otiokpoti, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

The abused teenager earlier said her life became more traumatic when her father commenced the process of aborting the pregnancy.

She said the method was crude and opened a chapter of health problems in her life.

She said: “My father after knowing I was pregnant took me to do an abortion. He took me to Elebele and handed me over to his female friend called Peace. Peace then took me to Otu-Aba. The place was an ordinary house.

“They didn’t allow me see the process but I saw the instruments. It was very painful. After that day, I started bleeding because he didn’t abort the pregnancy completely. I was taken back to Otu-Aba on December 5 and from there we went to Otu-Asiga to flush the remaining one.

“I discovered later that my body system had been messed up. I noticed I was no longer menstruating. It was just recently that I was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) where an operation was done on me with something like a container inserted into me. They called it a minor operation. I went back to remove the container”.

Having arrested Osai, the PPRO said the attention of the police was focused on apprehending Peace who took the minor to Osai for the abortion.

But the teenager’s nephew David Apigi, said unknown to the police commissioner, some members of the team in charge of the case were demanding money from the victim’s family to effect the arrest.

He said such persons even threatened to dismiss the matter and release the suspects if the victim’s family failed to give them money to conclude their investigations.

He said: “The first time we met with the Commissioner of Police, we told him that the policemen in charge of the case were complaining of lack of logistics. He promised to make logistics available to the team.

“I learnt that they collected money from our people before undertaking the mission to arrest the doctor. They are now asking us to bring N20, 000 to enable them go and arrest the lady. They even threatened to leave the matter and release the suspects if we failed to bring the money.

“Now, there is a rumour in our community that the suspect has been asked to bring N400, 000 for the case to be quashed. We are asking the commissioner to monitor what some of the persons handling this matter is doing”.

Butswat, however, said the police were fully committed in getting to the root of the matter adding that all the persons involved in the case would be arrested.

He said: “We are still investigating and we will surely arrest the lady. The command is taking the matter seriously and we have achieved a lot within a short period. We will arrest everybody involved and charge them to court.”

Meanwhile there is jubilation in the Imiringi community, Ogbia, following the arrest of Bamekpa. Apigi said people were happy that the alleged randy man had finally bitten more than he could chew.

“Many people are happy that the law has finally caught up with Bamekpa. They are begging the police to diligently prosecute the matter and ensure that justice is done. They are saluting our courage because we stood our ground to challenge him.

“We are also happy that the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police have shown interest in the matter,” he said.

  • Lawyer recommends adoption as viable alternative to abortion

Lawyer recommends adoption as viable alternative to abortion

Mrs Maureen Ajogo, an Abuja-based legal practitioner, says giving up an “unwanted” child for adoption is a better option than having an abortion.

Ajogo gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bwari.

According to her, abortion is a deviation from the moral norm of the sanctity of human life.

The legal practitioner said no civilised society should permit a human to intentionally take the life of another human.

“It must be punishable. However, adoption is a viable alternative to abortion.

“There is no such thing as an unwanted child. Look around you today; you hear of families travelling to remote places just to either conceive or get a child they can adopt,’’ she said.

Ajogo explained that abortion could result in complications later in life with the person terminating the pregnancy at risk of experiencing ectopic pregnancy, miscarriages, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

She identified rape victims as persons at risk of becoming pregnant with an “unwanted’’ baby.

According to her, if a situation like that should arise, the victim should be given proper medical care to ensure that she does not get pregnant.

“This is how the excuse for the act of terminating the pregnancy begins because we say it is unwanted.

“Abortion punishes the unborn child, who has committed no crime.

“It is the perpetrator who should be punished. Abortion should not be used as another form of contraception,” Ajogo said.

  • Husband admits giving wife money for abortion

Husband admits giving wife money for abortion

A herbal practitioner, Morufu Ajah, on Tuesday admitted in an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, that he gave his wife Deborah money for abortion.

Ajah, 33, told the court that he gave his wife money to terminate the pregnancy because he was not sure if the pregnancy belonged to him.

“I gave my wife money to abort her pregnancy because she used to leave home without my consent to unknown destination and come back after 21 days or 30 days.

“She may even tell me she was going to her parent’s place, after some days, I will call her parents; they will tell me they did not see her.

“So, when she comes back home and told me that she was pregnant, I doubted it. I gave her N7, 000 to terminate it.

“She collected the money, lied to me that she had done it but never did it,’’ Ajah said.
The petitioner said that his wife turned his mother into a `punching bag’ that most times, she beat and tore her clothes.

“My wife had turned my mother’s clothes to rags as she always tore it into pieces whenever she is beating her.

“She always curse and abuse my mother, calling her a witch and telling people that my mother always fly in the night,’’ he said.

He described his wife as a violent and aggressive woman that she used to hit him first any time they had misunderstanding and that always prompted him to beat her up.

Morufu alleged that his wife was fetish that on three occasions, he came back from work and saw salt sprinkled all over the house.

He urged the court to dissolve their three years old marriage because he was no longer in love and his mother’s life was in danger.

Deborah, 30, teacher, denied all the allegations, and insisted that the fight in the home was because she refused to terminate the pregnancy.

“My husband gave me money to abort my baby; I collected the money but used it for another thing.

“When he later discovered that I did not do the abortion, he started beating me and moved my belonging into the kitchen.

“He later left the house to unknown destination, it was my neighbours that always contributed money for me to feed till my delivery,’’ Deborah said.

The mother of two said that she never beat her mother-in-law nor tore her clothes.

She pleaded with the court not to grant her husband’s petition because she was still in love with him.

The court President, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, urged the couple to maintain the peace and adjourned the case till Dec. 7, for judgement.

  • ‘No abortion for Sambisa victims’

The Bishop of the Lagos West Anglican Diocese, the Rt Revd James Odedeji, has said abortion was not a solution to ameliorating the plight of expectant women rescued from the Sambisa Forest.

He spoke at a briefing ahead of the Synod of the Lagos West Diocese, scheduled to begin tomorrow at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church, Ikeja GRA, Lagos with the theme, ‘Looking unto Jesus.’

The bishop said while the church will continue praying for them, it would not encourage abortion.

“The Church of God does not support abortion of any kind. It is unfortunate that we are in this mess,” Bishop Odedeji said.

He called for prayers for the rescue of the Chibok girls kidnapped over a year ago by Boko Haram.

Bishop Odedeji also called for prayers for incoming leaders, specifically for the Lagos State governor-elect, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.

“On the incoming governor, we need to pray for him because the Bible encourages us to pray for our leaders.”

  • Catholic knights, ladies rally against abortion in Warri

Catholic leaders under the auspices of Knights and Ladies of Saint Mulumba last weekend held an anti-abortion rally round major streets of Effurun, Warri, Delta State .

They said the rally was aimed at creating awareness on the need to stop abortion and needless killing of unborn babies in the country.

The Pro-life rally was organized by Knight and Ladies of Saint Mulumba, Effurun sub-council in Effurun in commemoration of the celebration of the feast of Annunciation.

The Knights and Ladies of Saint Mulumba celebrate the event annually in a bid to stop abortion nationwide. The theme of this year’s rally is “Capital Punishment, Anti Thesis of Civilization”

Leaders of the group, including Sub-council Physician, Bro Felix Abuah; Supreme Physician, Bro Enomah Bazuaye and Metro Grand Knight, Bro Moses Iyasere, urged Nigerians to give unborn babies the chance to live and achieve their potentials.

The Anti-abortion rally went around major streets of Effurun and was used to educate the people that abortion has killed more unborn babies than HIV/AIDS had killed children and adults.

They said people have been agitating for human and animal rights all over the world, wondering why nobody is talking about the rights of the conceived and unborn child.

They went ahead to say that it was high time people prevented cruelty against the conceived child, adding that nobody has the rights to terminated life whether born or unborn.

“We prevent cruelty against animals. Why don’t we have rights for the conceived and unborn child. We prevent cruelty against animals. It is time to prevent cruelty against the conceived child. The fight is on against capital punishment. Why not fight against the killing of the unborn child,” they said.
