  • CBN revokes nine micro-finance banks’ licences

    The National Association of Micro Finance Banks on Monday said that nine out of the 34 micro finance banks in Niger have lost their operational banking licences.

    Mr Sado Daniel, North Central Secretary of the association made the remark in Bida while inaugurating a micro-finance bank established by the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.

    “These micro-finance banks lost their licences because they fell short during the regulation exercise carried out by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN),’’ he said.

    He said that non adherence to corporate governance contributed to the collapse of the banks, urging the management and staff members of the new bank to adhere strictly to the rules establishing it.

    “Banks do not die, people kill them; please do not kill the Federal Polytechnic Bida Micro-Finance Bank; ensure you adhere strictly to the rules of the game,’’ he said.

    Similarly, Hajia Hajara Mohammed, a representative of the CBN in Minna, said that insider abuse was another huge factor that contributed to the failure of micro-finance banks across the country.

    Mohammed urged business people to stop diverting loans collected from banks to other purposes such as marriage among other things different from what the loan was meant for.

    According to her, “until we stop using business money and loans to get married and buy clothes, businesses in the country will not progress.’’
    She called on the people to work toward ensuring that all loans collected were paid back to enable them to benefit more.

    “If you don’t return your loans there is no way you will benefit from loans being made available by the Federal Government through the CBN,’’ she said.

    Earlier, Dr Abubakar Dzukogi, the Rector of the polytechnic, said that the micro-finance bank was established with a capital base of N20 million adding that it would be increased to N50 million by the year 2019.

    Dzukogi, who is also Chairman, Board of Directors of the micro-finance bank, said the bank would make banking easy for students and staff members of the polytechnic.

    He also said that the measure would ease the cashless policy being planned by the CBN.

  • Bida Poly to construct hostels through PPP — Rector

    The Rector Federal Polytechnic Bida, Dr Abubakar Dzukogi, says the institution is partnering with  Bartah Nigeria Limited for the construction of 500-capacity hostels at the cost of N250 million as part of its Private Public Partnership (PPP).

    Dzukogi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Bida on Friday that the project, which would have 125 rooms, would be located in the polytechnic’s complex.

    He said that when completed, the cost of the project would be recouped within 10 years.

    The rector explained that the management of the institution had duly notified the Federal Ministry of Education about the projects.

    He said that out of 16,000 students currently undergoing various courses in the polytechnic, only about 3,000 were accommodated in the institution hostels.

    According to Dzukogi, most of the students are accommodated off campus, which has negative effects on their studies.

    The rector said that the management of the institution had also taken measures to address the accommodation problem through collaboration with more private developers.

    He called for improved funding to enable the institution to rehabilitate some of the building structures on its campus.

    Dzukogi said that the entire administrative block, including the office of the  rector, was in dire need of rehabilitation.

    The rector also spoke of plans to sign another agreement with the same private firm to construct a community market in the polytechnic.

    He said that project, if completed, would enhance the institution’s revenue generation.

  • Bida Poly spends N261m on staff allowance – Rector

    The management of Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, says it spent N261 million on payment of staff allowances from April 2017 to date.

    Its Rector, Dr Abubakar Dzukogi, told our correspondent on Tuesday in Bida that the gesture was to boost staff morale for better performance.

    He said “we would continue to accord priority attention to welfare of our personnel to enable them contribute positively toward the development of the institution.”

    Dzukogi appealed to Federal Government to release more funds to the polytechnic for the execution of capital projects.

    He added that “we are in dire need of additional hostel blocks to accommodate our teeming students.”

    The rector explained that only about 30 per cent of the estimated 15,000 students of the institution were being accommodated in hostel.

    He said the release of more funds would enable the polytechnic to commence construction of additional hostels to address the accommodation problem.

  • FedPoly Bida to honour three governors

    The management of Federal Polytechnic Bida will confer Fellowship Awards on three state governors and the Etsu Nupe on March 28, the institution’s Rector, Dr Abubakar Dzukogi, said on Wednesday.

    Dzukogi told our reporter in Minna that the governors are Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Abubakar Bello of Niger and Yahaya Bello of Kogi.

    “They will be conferred with the award alongside Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe,’’ he said.

    The Rector said the institution was honouring the four distinguished Nigerians because it has “noted with satisfaction their useful contributions towards educational development in their respective states and the country in general’’.

    He said the Polytechnic would bestow the awards on the personalities during its combined convocation ceremony of March 28.

    “During the ceremony, 5,605 students of 2016, comprising 3,380 ND students and 1,729 HND students, will become graduands, while 4,811 students of 2017 with 3,134 for ND and 1,677 for HND, will also become graduands,’’ Dzukogi said.

    The Rector said he was happy that the institution was one of the most peaceful polytechnics in the country.

    “This is due to the diligence and dedication of management, students and members of the academic board,’’ he added.

    “However, we will continue to utilise the little resources at our disposal to provide an enabling environment for a conducive atmosphere for learning.’’

  • Alumni celebrate Bida Poly at 40

    The Niger State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Ketso, and the Rector, Abubakar Dzukogi Federal Polytechnic Bida, are to be honoured along with other distinguished Nigerians during a dinner to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the institution on Saturday.

    The dinner and award night is part of a four-day programme by the institution’s alumni association to mark the anniversary and give back to their alma mater.

    Other programmes of activities include: a road show holding today; Jumat Service and a novelty football match between members of staff and the *alumni tomorrow and a lecture scheduled for Saturday. Curtains will lower on the anniversary with an inter-dominational service on Sunday.

    President of the alumni association, Mr Koce Henry Doko said the anniversary would serve as a platform to re-launch the association, which he said had been moribund for some time.

    Koce said the body was however happy that the Polytechnic had been able to keep its standard.

    “Over the years, Federal Polytechnic Bida has grown structurally.  Bida Poly has always been known for its standard and we are glad that the standard is still there. We are proud of the Bida standard; it has kept us afloat all these years.”

    He also said that after the anniversary, branches of the alumni would be launched across the country.

    Bida Poly to construct 6,000 capacity hostels – Rector

    The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Dr kAbubakar Dzuogi, says the institution has earmarked a parcel of land for the construction of 6,000 capacity hostels by private developers.

    Dzukogi made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Tuesday.

    “We have earmarked a land in a very good location within the institution premises for the project.

    “We have already notified the Federal Ministry of Education to seek its approval as the private developers are ready to commence the execution of the project.

    “Our major challenge in the polytechnic is lack of hostels to accommodate our increasing students.

    “Once our request is approved by the ministry, the developers are ready to mobilise to site and within a very short period, the projects will be completed.’’

    He explained that out of 16,000 students currently undergoing various courses in the polytechnic, only about 3,000 of them were accommodated in the institution hostels.

    Dzukogi said that most of the students were accommodated off campus, adding that the situation has negative effective on their studies.

    He expressed confidence that the project if fully executed, would solve the accommodation problem at the institution and enhance students’ performance.

    TETFUND spends N181m on new lecture theatre at Bida polytechnic

    Dr Abubakar Dzukogi, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic,  Bida,  said on Tuesday that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND)  spent  N181 million   on the construction of a 1,000 capacity twin lecture theatre in  the institution.

    Dzukogi told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Bida that the  theatre, which had already been  inaugurated, has all the required facilities, including 36 offices for lecturers.

    He explained that the project had greatly complemented  the effort of the institution in providing conducive learning atmosphere for students.

    The rector  said that the institution had also  taken measures to ensure that  all projects executed by TETFUND  were  in line with  contract specifications.

    He said that the Department of  Business Studies had been  directed to ensure proper utilisation of all facilities at the  theatre

    The rector, however,  called on  students to take advantage of the improved learning facilities by dedicating themselves to excellence in their academic pursuits.

    Bida Poly gets NBTE’s accreditation for 15 courses

    The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)  has accredited 15 courses, offered at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida in Niger.

    The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Abubakar Dzukogi, made the disclosure on Tuesday in an interview in Bida.

    He said the accredited courses include Building Technology, Quantity Surveying and Survey Geo-Informatics.

    Others are Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering Technology and Soil and Water Engineering.

    Also approved are Public Administration, Chemical Engineering Technology and Science Laboratory Technology.

    The rector said that the accredited courses would be due for re-accreditation in September, 2021.

    Bida poly to commence commercial farming

    The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Bida, Dr Abubakar Dzukogi said on Thursday that the institution plans to embark on full scale commercial farming to boost its revenue base.

    According to Dzukogi, the institution’s Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Technology Department would drive the commercial agriculture initiative.

    The rector disclosed that the management of the polytechnic had approved a proposal for immediate commencement of the commercial farming scheme.

    Dzukogi said that the focus would be more on rice cultivation, adding that communities using the vast land owned by the polytechnic had been given notice to vacate.

    According to him, the Agric department of the institution is already running a large poultry farm initiated seven weeks ago, as part of the efforts to delve into full agriculture.

    “We gave them a challenge and judging by the calibre of people in the department, they did all they could to do to make the project a huge success.

    “This is the beginning of good things to come and I have encouraged all stakeholders to take the advantage of commercial farming.

    “Let us all work towards it; it will help us to be self sufficient financially and enable us provide conducive learning environment for academic excellence,” Dzukogi said.
