  • 11 Adamawa NYSC members win presidential honors

Eleven former members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) have received Presidential Honours Award for distinguishing themselves during their service year in Adamawa State.

The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mallam Abubakar Mohammed, said the awardees were among corps members who served the state in 2015/2016/2017.

Mohammed said the ex-corps members distinguished themselves in their Community Development Services (CDS) in the areas of construction, organizing extra lessons, donating books and drugs, among others, to their local communities.

He said the achievement of the corps members came despite the reputation of Adamawa as an insurgency-troubled state, a reputation which he described as being over stressed.

“When corps members are deployed to the state, they develop worries and begin to think of redeployment but when they get firsthand information on the true security situation, they change their mind against locating to another state,” he said.

The 11 Adamawa ex-corps members were among the 168 to whom President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday presented awards at the combined 2015/2016/2017 President’s NYSC Honours Award held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.

  • JEDC sacks 150 workers

    JEDC sacks 150 workers

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company ( JEDC ), has sacked 150 workers, in what its management said was part of a re-organisation aimed at optimum performance.

Among those sacked across its four states of Plateau, Gombe, Bauchi and Benue were marketers, linesmen, network engineers, cable joiners and electrical fitters.

Their sack letters, signed by Abubakar Mohammed, Head, Human Resources and Support Services, simply told the workers that their services were no loner required.

The letters said that they would be paid one month’s salary in lieu of notice, and warned them against impersonating as workers of the company.

Some of the workers, however, accused the JEDC management refusing to settle their entitlements before sacking them, and also alleged that they were paid half salary in September.

They also rejected management’s claims that those sacked were old and unproductive, arguing that most of them were young persons engaged “few years ago”.

Alhaji Gidado Modibbo, JEDC Managing Director, who reacted to the allegations, made this known on Tuesday in Jos that the “weeding exercise” was aimed at ridding the company of “dead woods”.

“We assess workers based on performance. Those sacked fell short of minimum expectations. Some were too old for the jobs they were handling.

“We even had Faults Men that were more than 60 years and blind. We had to ask them to go because they could not climb electric poles and were not adding any value to us,” he said.

He also rejected claims that the workers of the JEDC were paid half salaries in September, and explained that they received 70 per cent of their wages because management had set a target and resolved to base salaries on it.

Dr. Friday Elijah, JEDC Director of Communications, who also reacted, said that the main parametre used for the sack was performance.

“The performance of the workers have been generally very poor and management had always told them to sit up.

“Last month, for instance, we distributed N4 billion worth of energy, but realised only N950 million. It means that many workers are not productive, hence our resolve to ask them to go.”

He said that some workers were sacked for extorting monies from consumers, while others collected money from customers but did not remit same to the company.

Elijah said that some workers were told old and could no longer add any value to the company, while others, who were inherited from the former owners, had served for close to 40 years.

The official, however said that the company had engaged more workers than it had sacked since it took over JEDC in November 2013, “in spite of new technology that has minimised the need for manual activities”.

Onitsha Park: Police chiefs face contempt charge

The Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has fixed May 27 to hear a contempt charge against the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, Police Commissioner Usman Gwary and Ogbaru Local Government by an Onitsha businessman Chief Michael Emerah and Mic Merah International Agency Ltd.

The court granted an order following a motion ex-parte filed on of April 8 by the counsel to the plaintiff, Chief Nnamdi Ibegbu, praying for an order of substituted service on the inspector general, police commissioner and Ogbaru Local Government, stating that the court baillifs were finding it difficult to serve the earlier order granted them directly on the respondents.

The court earlier this month served a notice of committal (Form 48) on the inspector-general, the assistant inspector-general, Zonal 9, Umuahia, police commissioner and the chairman of Ogbaru for failing to comply with the court directive.

The notice was sequel to the order directing the respondents to allow the applicants, Chief Michael Emerah and his company, Micmerah International Agency Limited to occupy a land at Upper Iweka Flyover in Onitsha, which was leased to him by the Federal Ministry of Works since May, 2001 to operate as a motor park.

Emerah had carried out his motor park business in the land since then but in 2012, the former Governor Peter Obi administration demolished the park, known as Micmerah Modern Park at 127 Upper Iweka Triangle, near the Onitsha Flyover, Enugu/Onitsha Expressway.

Emerah challenged his forceful removal and obtained an order directing the respondents to allow him continue doing his business in Micmerah Modern Park, adding that the respondents should as stop further invasion of the premises.

After the court order in 2012, the first and third respondents reinstated Emerah in the park but in March the first and third respondents removed him from the park, claiming their action was on the directive of Governor Willie Obiano.
