    NEDC lifts ATBU with fire station, truck

    The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi,  Gubi Campus has received a safety boost with the donation of a modern fire station, a new firefighting truck, a functional borehole, and office facilities from the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

    At the inauguration of the new fire station, which will operate 24 hours, Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, handed over the facility on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as a “privilege” to deliver the project.

    He commended the president for supporting all development commissions under the ministry, which, he said, made the completion of the project possible.

    The minister urged the university community to “take ownership of this and other NEDC projects” to ensure proper maintenance and appreciation of the government’s efforts.

     “When communities embrace these projects, it reassures the government that resources are well-utilised,” he added.

    The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on NEDC also commended the commission for implementing initiatives that directly improve the living standards of people across the North East.

     He emphasised that the project will support ATBU in responding to fire emergencies, even as he hoped such disasters would be avoided.

    NEDC Managing Director/CEO, Mohammed Alkali Goni, noted that the project was designed to safeguard life and property within the university community  encouraging the management to maintain the facilities.

    Receiving the project on behalf of ATBU, Vice Chancellor Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba expressed deep gratitude to Allah and to the NEDC for the initiative.

    Represented by the university librarian, Dr. Dauda Adamu Bakum, the VC described the station as “a vital shield for our university, neighbouring communities, and the entire Bauchi State.”

    Prof Garba disclosed that the station is more than a building. “It is a beacon of security equipped with modern firefighting tools and a rapid-response vehicle that will protect laboratories, hostels, lecture halls, and the over 23,000 people who call ATBU home.”

  • Buhari appoints Jauro as NESREA DG

    President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Prof. Aliyu Jauro as the new Director General/ Chief Executive Officer of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, (NESREA).

    NESREA’s Deputy Director (Information), Oyofo Sule, confirmed his appointment in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.

    The statement said that Jauro takes over from Dr. Lawrence Chidi Anukam whose tenure expired on the 17th of February 2019.

    According to the statement, Jauro, before the appointment, was Deputy Director at the National Centre for Petroleum Research and Development, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, (A.T.B.U) Bauchi.

    He holds a Bachelor of Tech. Degree in Industrial Chemistry from A.T.B.U Bauchi and MSc and PhD Degrees in Industrial Chemistry from the same University.

    He joined the university as a Graduate Assistant in 1997 and rose through the ranks to become a Prof in Industrial Chemistry in 2014.

    Addressing the Management and Staff on assumption of office, the new Director General declared, “I am here to move the Agency to the next level.

    “I expect high standard of professionalism, integrity and dedication to duty.”

    He promised to operate an open-door policy, stressing that he will bring his wealth of experience to bear in ensuring that NESREA lives up to its mandate.

    He commended the acting Director General, Mrs. Miranda Amachree for the achievements recorded in her short period in that capacity.

    Prof. Jauro won the German Academic Exchange Scholarship (DAAD) and the European Association of Organic Geochemists (EAOG) Travel Grant in 2005.

    He is a fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), as well as a member of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, (MICCON) and of Polymer Institute of Nigeria (MPIN).

  • FG tasks governing council of 23 federal universities on funding

    The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has urged the newly inaugurated governing council of 23 federal universities to look inward to broaden the Internally Generated Revenue Base (IGR) of the universities.

    Adamu gave this advice on Tuesday in Abuja at the inauguration of the reconstituted governing board of the universities.

    He also called on the councils to look inward to broaden the Internally Generated Revenue Base (IGR) of the universities with a view to support the universities.

    According to the minister, the governing council should annually review the university budget to monitor its performance and assess the overall impact of its implementation.

    “In view of the current economic situation in the country, I call for the prudent management of the scarce resources while efforts should be intensified to broaden the Internally Generated Revenue Base of each university.

    “You should also ensure the judicious application of revenues so generated,’’ Adamu said.

    The minister also called on the council to be agents of change by seeing to it that every act of corruption was avoided in their various universities.

    “You should join the crusade of the Federal Government in the fight against corruption, by making this fight visible in the universities.

    “As seasoned and successful individuals in the public, private sectors and in your various professions, you will be expected to live above board in the discharge of your duties.

    “ Any corrupt practices by councils including condoling cases of indiscipline by staff, is bound to have a destructive effect on the system and on the products of the system, hence must be avoided,’’ he said.

    He, however, urged universities management to support the governing councils as they implement policies and decisions of the council.

    In his address, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission called on the councils to display a high sense of commitment in the discharge of their duties.

    Rasheed, who emphasized the role of the council in the development of universities, said the commission would continue to support the councils to achieve its desired result.

    “NUC appreciates the critical role of the governing council in the development of Nigerian universities.

    “The NUC will continue to make itself available to ensure that it succeeds in its task and to succeed, every one of you should display a high sense of commitment, teamwork and dedication no matter the challenges,’’ he said.

    Also, Hon. Suleiman Aminu, Chairman, House Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund stressed the need for the councils to synergise with Vice Chancellors of the universities to ensure unity of purpose.

    Aminu promised to work with the legislature to ensure that universities were properly funded, adding that the various leakages in the universities must be blocked.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari sometimes in April constituted the chairmen of governing councils of these universities.

    The selection was made in cognizance with provisions of the respective legislation with respect to composition, competence, credibility, integrity, federal character and geo-political spread.

    Those inaugurated are: Amb. Nimota Akanbi, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Mukhtar Mohammed, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Bayero University, Kano, Sen. J.N. Waku, Federal University of Technology Akure and Prof. Shehu Zuru, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun.

    Others are, Prof.  Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. John Ofem, Federal University, Owerri, Mr Muhammad Zayyanu, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and Mr Bukar Zarma, Modibbo Adama Univrersity of Technology, Yola.

    Also to head are, Aziz Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Sani Maikudi, University of Abuja, Dr Aboki Zhawa, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Prof. Alkassum Abba, University of Agriculture Makurdi and Isah Ashiru, University of Benin.

    Others are, Sen. Nkechi Nwogu, University of Calabar, Joshua Waklek, University of Ibadan, Dr Jibril Oyekan, University of Ilorin, Tony Momoh, University of Jos, Dr Wale Babalakin, University of Lagos and Prof. Biodun Adesanya, University of Maiduguri.

  • ATBU matriculates 3,888 students

    Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, on Friday, matriculated 3,888 students for the 2016/2017 academic session.

    Prof. Saminu Ibrahim, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, said that the Faculty of Sciences had 950 students, the largest number, compared to other faculties.

    Others were Faculty of Technology Education, 723; Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, 719 and Faculty of Environmental Technology, 639.

    The Faculty of Management Sciences had 454; College of Medical Sciences, 41 and Faculty of Agriculture, 272 students.

    Ibrahim also announced the commencement of courses at the university’s College of Medical Sciences.

    He also said that the National University Commission (NUC) had re-accredited nine courses in the Faculty of Technology Education and Environmental Technology earlier denied the institution.

    Ibrahim warned the new students against cultism, improper dressing, illicit drugs, corruption and other vices, saying: “the school has zero tolerance for such misconducts”.

    He said that the institution had introduced the use of smart boards in most of the lecture halls and tablets for students.

    “The council has approved the provision of triumph tablets for students to be sold at subsidized rate although, it is optional.

    “It is part of the global dispensation in which the economic development has to meet the ever-challenging consumer sovereign and knowledge-based society,” the vice chancellor said.

    He urged them to concentrate on their studies and ensure that they excel at the end of their studies.

    Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, will graduate 7,688 students at its combined 19th and 22nd convocation, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Saminu Ibrahim, said on Tuesday.

    Addressing a pre-convocation news briefing in Bauchi, Ibrahim said that the figure included 845 Diplomas, 5,554 first degrees, 1,219 Post-Graduate Diplomas and Masters and 64 Doctorate students.

    He further said that of the 5,554 first degree graduands, 32 obtained First Class, 1,203 had Second Class Upper and 2,702 passed with Second Class Lower.

    According to him, 1481 had Third Class while 136 had Pass.

    He said that President Muhammadu Buhari was expected to grace the occasion scheduled to hold on Jan. 23, 2016.

    On the institution’s achievements, Ibrahim said that 40 academic staff members had obtained PhD. degrees worldwide while many others were pursuing their master degrees.

    He said that the institution was constructing six new hostels and had renovated all old ones in order to provide decent accommodation for the students.

    In addition, Ibrahim said that institution had also embarked on the construction of a three-star hotel and floated a micro-finance bank.

    Furthermore, the institution had also producing bottle and sachet water and revamped its moribund printing press with a view to improving its Internally Generated Revenue.
