The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, on Monday extended his on-the-spot assessment to the Abuja–Kaduna Highway to ease traffic flow, as vehicular movement increases ahead of the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Corps Marshal’s on-the-spot traffic assessment was part of the end-of-year nationwide monitoring of highways.

Mohammed personally monitored traffic on the Abuja–Lokoja highway on Sunday, leading to the immediate deployment of additional personnel to clear congestion and restore free flow.

According to a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal, while in Kaduna, personally oversaw traffic operations, ensuring strict compliance with traffic regulations, as “enforcement teams intensified surveillance across major routes, leading to the apprehension of several overloaded vehicles and other traffic violators.”

  • Abuja-Kaduna highway most dangerous in Africa, says Senate

The Senate Wednesday labeled the popular Abuja-Kaduna highway the most dangerous in Africa due to the activities of kidnappers and armed bandits operating on the expressway.

The position of the upper chamber may be contrary to the declaration of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu who assured travelers plying the route that the road had been cleared of undesirable elements terrorising travelers on the road.

Senator Shehu Sani had, while contributing to a motion on “Urgent need to increase the number of couches to the Abuja-Kaduna railway line” described Abuja-Kaduna highway as one of the most dangerous in Africa.

Senator James Manager countered that the highway is not one of the most dangerous but the most dangerous road in Africa.

The Delta Central Senator added that it is apparent that only those who wanted to commit suicide would ply the road.

Sani said that the motion should be the saving grace for the rich and poor.

He added that the government should take steps to patronize local manufacturers for the production of couches.

Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah (Kebbi South) on his own noted that what should be done was to increase the frequency of the train service between Abuja and Kaduna.

Na’Allah said that the impression should not be created that Abuja-Kaduna expressway had been abandoned to kidnappers and bandits.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, described the motion as very important.

The Lagos East Senator told his colleagues that he just came back from China, a trip that was necessitated by the pressure on the rail lines.

He said that the Federal Government had paid for 64 couches eight of which will be delivered within eight weeks.

Senator Magnus Abe said that the Senate should take into cognizance the fact the rail lines were built with borrowed funds.

The Rivers South East Senator said that the view of the Nigerian Railway Corporation should be taken into account in relation to fare.

Ndume in his lead debate noted with concern the undue pressure on existing facilities at the Abuja-Kaduna railway line.

Most passengers’ en-route Abuja-Kaduna, he said, have turned to the railway as a safer means of transportation.

Ndume said that he is aware that the surge in the patronage of the rail services may have been attributed to its safety, comfort, convenience and perhaps affordability, which have drawn many commuters following the high risks on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway that is threatened by kidnappers, armed robbers and other kinds of criminals.

The surge, he added, has led to rowdiness during ticket purchase and survival of the fittest for passengers willing to buy tickets across the counters as officials deliberately hoard and sold tickets to the highest bidders.

He observed that the daily schedule for Abuja-Kaduna from Monday to Sunday is: 7am, 2pm and 6pm except for Wednesday with only trips at 7am and 6pm.

Ndume said that he is aware that huge numbers of travelers jostle for ticket sold at N1, 500 after queuing for about two hours to enable them stand for two hours trip.

The Borno south senator who said that every good thing usually face its share of challenges, noted that “what the rail transit (Abuja-Kaduna) is faced with is shortage in the number of available couches which explains the long queues recorded at the stations.

He expressed worry that Nigerians willing to use the rail lie service are now meant to queue up for hours before boarding due to the increased demand.

Ndume prayed the Senate to urge the Federal Government to deploy more couches to the Abuja-Kaduna rail line to ameliorate the plight of the passengers as well as urge the Nigerian Railway Corporation to reduce the fare from N1, 500 to N600 to make it affordable to the general public.

At end of the debate the Senate resolved to urge the NRC to review the fare structure in relation to cost.

It also asked the Federal Government to deploy more couches to the Abuja-Kaduna rail line to ameliorate the plight of the passengers.

  • Insecurity: IGP inaugurates operation ‘Puff Adder’ on Abuja-Kaduna highway

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, yesterday launched a special operation to tackle the increasing rate of kidnapping and robbery on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

‘Operation Puff Adder’, according to Adamu, is a well thought out and major operation aimed at re-dominating and reclaiming the public space from heinous criminal elements bent on threatening the internal security order.

It will cover Abuja-Kaduna highway and the adjoining communities and extend to Kogi, Katsina, Niger and Zamfara states.

Adamu, speaking at the event, said:”To the criminal elements, let me sound this note of warning loud and clear: give up your criminal activities, embrace other legitimate means of livelihood or be prepared for the consequences of your criminality.

“The citizens and the police are now united in their resolve to take the battle to your doorsteps and bring you to deserved justice.”

The IGP said crimes, particularly those that endanger the lives and property of citizens, do not represent the traditional values as a people.

“No nation develops to its optimal potential in an environment of crimes and fear of criminality.

“Unfortunately, the activities of organised and murderous criminals across the country have evolved to become a threat not only to these values but to our internal security.

“There must, therefore, come a time in the life of a nation when we, as a people, must strengthen our will and resolve to mobilise and deploy all our assets towards confronting these criminal elements.

“Take the battle to their doorsteps and make a clear statement that the few deviants among us cannot and will not re-order our cherished national values.

“The time is now and today’s action by the police is aimed at this direction and it is in direct compliance with the directives of Mr President to the police, to re-evaluate and emplace new operational strategies.

“This is in order to stem the tide of kidnapping, armed robbery, armed banditry and sundry highly organised crimes across the country within the shortest possible time.”

Adamu said as a lead agency in internal security management, the police under the current dispensation, acknowledge that the duty of securing the lives and property of the citizens is its primary mandate.

He noted that no police agency anywhere in the world, no matter how well-trained, equipped or motivated, can solely achieve its community security and safety mandate.

He said this could not be achieved without the support of the community it is engaged to serve.

“It is in consequence of this that the police are collaborating closely with the armed forces, the intelligence community and other sister security agencies, in this operation and in its duties across the country.

He said to achieve the objectives of this special operation, the full support of the civil populace, particularly traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth associations and market bodies would be needed.

He charged the policemen deployed in the special operation to see their deployment as a call to national duty.

“The force leadership and the entire nation are looking out for two major outcomes as you discharge your duties during this operation.

“First to protect them from kidnappers, armed robbery and other heinous criminals and to be professionals in your conduct, as you strive to attain this objective,”Adamu said.

He also charged them to be civil with the law-abiding citizens but firm and ruthless with criminal elements that may attempt to take the risk of testing their will or threaten citizens within the area of jurisdiction.

Several units of mobile police, other special tactical operatives like the counter-terrorism unit, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, are deployed to curb kidnapping, armed banditry, robbery and other related violent crimes.
