    Police confirm two dead in Abuja school explosion

    The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police has confirmed two persons died during a suspected bomb explosion at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School, located in Kuchibuyi Village, Byazhin area.

    The police said upon receiving a distress call from the Sarki of Kuchibuyi, a team of police operatives, including the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and the Area Commander of Kubwa, mobilised to the scene. 

    The area was immediately cordoned off to protect residents and facilitate a thorough investigation.

    During the rescue operation, the police said victims were evacuated and rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

    According to a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, Preliminary investigations revealed that three men from Katsina visited the owner of the Islamic school, Mallam Adamu Ashimu. 

    The three visitors were suspected of having brought the explosive device with them.

    Adeh said two of the men died in the explosion while tampering with the improvised explosive device (IED) on the school Veranda while the third man and a female trader sustained severe injuries. They are receiving treatment under police guard.

    The statement reads: “The FCT Police Command regrets to inform the public of a tragic incident involving a suspected bomb explosion that occurred on January 6, 2025, at approximately 11:00 AM at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School, located in Kuchibuyi Village, Byazhin area of the FCT.

    “The FCT Bomb Squad has confirmed that it was an IED explosion, as remnants of the device have been recovered”.

    She said Mallam Adamu Ashimu, the owner of the school, has been taken into custody for questioning and further findings will be communicated in due course.

    Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, FCT, 

    CP Olatunji Disu urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, behavior, or items that may resemble improvised explosive devices.

    There is growing anxiety in the Chuchibiyu community of Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) when an explosion went off af Islamiyyah school, leaving a student dead.

    Four others, according to sources, were critically injured.

    It was gathered tragic incident occurred around noon on Monday, January 6, 2025, sending shockwaves through the quiet community located approximately 42 kilometers from Abuja’s city centre.

    Emergency response teams, including the police bomb disposal squad, promptly arrived the scene while the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

    While a security source disclosed that the deceased student was reportedly carrying a substance suspected to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) when it detonated, the security and police authorities were yet to comment on the incident.

    The Chairman of Bwari Area Council, John Gabaya, confirmed the incident involving an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at an Islamiyya school in Chuchibiyu.

    According to Gabaya, the incident resulted in one fatality with the victim dying at the scene.

    While speaking with our correspondent, the chairman said in addition to the fatality, four other individuals sustained serious injuries as a result of the explosion. 

    Gabaya also stated the person responsible for bringing the IED to the school has been apprehended by the Police for interrogation. 

    He said: “One person died there immediately. That was confirmed. Four other persons, including a girl, that sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital. 

    “The girl was selling awara (Soyabean cake) when the bomb exploded. Since she was closer to the scene of the explosion, she was also wounded. So, they took the four of them to the hospital.”

    He promised to provide further information to the public whenever it was available.

    Efforts to get the reaction of the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh were futile. She didn’t respond to calls and texts.
