  • Adelabu lays foundation for largest minigrid in Abuja community

Adelabu lays foundation for largest minigrid in Abuja community

After 10 years without electricity supply, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu yesterday laid the foundation for the Rubochi 900kWp interconnected and the Ikea 100kWp solar mini – grid, being the largest mini-grid plant in the country.

The standalone mini-grids are under the Korean Energy Project through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

At the groundbreaking ceremony in Rubochi, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Adelebu, who was represented by the Assistant Director, Renewable and Rural Energy Access, Engr. Samuel Ayangeor, said he celebrated with the  people of Rubochi, Ikwa, Gada Biyu and Kugbaru as the beneficiary communities of the impactful support.

He described the foundation as an immense progress that would add 1.6MWp and 3.0MWhr capacity energizing 7,300 residential and commercial homes in the communities.

He also noted that the project will transform the socio – economic status of the people.

“It is a great progress to have an additional 1.6MWp and 3.0MWhr capacity energizing 7,300 residential and commercial homes in these communities while transforming the socio-economic status of the people,” the minister said.

According to him, energy poverty is a problem that permeates different nations across the continent. Different stakeholders, said Adelabu, continue to address the effect of energy poverty in different ways.

He noted that in Nigeria, there has been a unique history that has taken the country through varying phases of the journey toward the desirable change it strives to see in the energy sector.

Continuing, he said: “It is my distinct honor to celebrate a milestone that embodies the spirit of progress and international collaboration – the groundbreaking of four minigrid projects through the generous support of the Korean Government under Official Development Assistance (ODA).”

Adelabu noted that in the last few months, there have been transformative changes in the power sector.

“We have a people-centered Electricity Act specifically designed to decentralize the sector and expand investment opportunities through the State Governments.

“This Act, as you can see, gives us the opportunity to further explore renewable energy solutions across the nation,” he added.

He said he was already briefed the level of support accorded to the REA on land acquisition, security, and overall support by the community.

He sought collaboration with the FCT on the long-term operation and maintenance of the plants.

The minister said the off-grid electrification comes with culture change through deliberate sensitization of beneficiaries and stakeholders.

He extolled the agency and its strategic partners for taking a solid path towards sustainability through the growth of the Productive Use Market in Nigeria.

Adelabu said through the central role of the Productive Use Market, more lives are being transformed just as more communities are being enlivened.

Speaking, the REA Managing Director, Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, noted that the rural communities suffer profound health and economic impacts as a result of the wide use of non-renewable or polluting energy sources.

He said growing the market for lower impact energy technologies is a step towards equitable, cleaner development.

The REA boss recalled that on the 16th June 2022, the Federal Government of Nigeria officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korean Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) to develop four mini-grids within the FCT.

He said they include the Robuchi Interconnected Minigrid which will have a total capacity of 900kWp divided into three fractions.

“Construction of 100kWp is also ongoing at Ikwa Community of Gwagwalada while the remaining two would be delivered before December 2024.”

Upon full delivery of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) project, according to him,  the intervention would have delivered a total renewable energy capacity of 1.6 MWp and 3.0 MWhr system across four main communities in the FCT.

Ahmad said the most significant part of this intervention is the fact that it further strengthens the Agency’s ongoing efforts on Productive Use through the auxiliary Productive Use Equipment such as smart metering devices certified by NEMSA, streetlights, indoor lighting, and clean water purification systems.

He said REA is currently working on a sustainable operation and maintenance model which would be applied in collaboration with the formed Rural Electricity Users’ Cooperative (REUCS) and the FCT, in order to take care of this investment.

He said as to the Korean Institute for the Advancement of Technology (KIAT) be assured that these projects have been developed with sustainability dimensions embedded from their conceptualization.

Meanwhile, the Korean Energy Project, Coordinator, Dr. Salman Bello said the project has been designed to deploy power to three communities.

Rubocuhi, he said, has the largest and it is going to be the largest mini-grid in the country today, adding that Rubouchi has not had light for the past 10 years and assuring the communities that they will be energized this time next year.

According to him, it is not only going to be reliable, will also be clean. He revealed that a cooperative has been set up to support the project.

For the 25 years life span of the project, Bello noted that all has been put in place for its sustainability.

Already 200 poles have been deployed to the communities. From the communities, Community Head, Rubochi of Rubouchi,

High Royal Highness, Alhaji Ibrahim Pada Sa, appreciated the government for citing the project in the community.

He counted the community lucky for meriting the project without money. According to him, the project will serve 4,400 households when completed.  He noted that it will certainly change the lives of the people.

Insecurity: Senate probes N500bn abandoned CCTV cameras project in Abuja

The Senate on Wednesday, November 22, resolved to investigate the abandoned Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras project in the Abuja metropolis said to have been awarded at the cost of N500billion.

The resolution followed its consideration and adoption of a motion sponsored by Ned Nwoko (PDP – Delta North) at plenary.

The contract was said to have been awarded to a private firm during the administration of late President Musa Yar’Adua.

Nwoko, in his lead debate, insisted that despite a series of security measures already in existence, kidnapping and other security challenges are still rampant within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The senator said his Senior Legislative Aide, Chris Agidy and 18 other persons were abducted two weeks ago from their residence around the Galadimawa area of Abuja.

He noted that information from security sources on the abduction indicated that 12 out of the victims have been killed by their abductors, while efforts to rescue the remaining seven are still ongoing.

Nwoko called for a joint security operation comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Security Services (DSS) to rescue the remaining victims.

He also urged the members of the Red Chamber to encourage security agencies in the country to facilitate the installation of CCTV cameras within the Abuja metropolis and other parts of the country.

In his contribution, Senator Ede Dafinone (PDP – Delta Central) who seconded the motion, said there was an urgent need to stop kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.

On his part, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA-Abia South) raised the alarm that residents of Lugbe and Kubuwa areas of Abuja can no longer sleep in their homes because of the fear of being attacked by kidnappers.

He urged security agencies to increase security surveillance patrols within the FCT.

Also, Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP-Kebbi Central) revealed that the project was awarded at the cost of N500 billion for the installation of CCTV cameras in the Abuja metropolis.

Aliero said the contract was awarded to the contractor during his tenure as minister of the FCT.

Aliero was a Minister of the FCT between December 2008 and March 2010 under the administration of late President Yar’Adua.

The senator was silent on the name and details of the contractor who got the project, but he insisted that the installation of the CCTV cameras in the Abuja metropolis was abandoned.

He therefore called for the contract to be investigated by the Red Chamber.

Aliero lamented: “The contractor just came and installed useless cameras and nobody is saying anything.

“It is now time for us to revisit the issue of the N500 billion award of contract for the installation of CCTV cameras in the city.

“We should make the contractor account for the huge loss of money. The project has gone down the drain and nobody is talking about it.”

After much debate on the issue, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, put it to voice vote and the majority of the senators voted in support of it.

Akpabio thereafter directed the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory to liaise with the Office of the Minister of FCT to investigate the abandoned contract.

The Senate President also urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to increase the surveillance of patrols in Abuja to prevent kidnapping and other insecurity challenges.

Akpabio directed the Clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze to communicate the resolution to the appropriate authorities.

  • First Lady flags off Market-Moni Scheme, presents cheques to beneficiaries in Abuja

First Lady flags off Market-Moni Scheme, presents cheques to beneficiaries in Abuja

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Wednesday, November 22, launched the targeted Expansion of the Market-Moni Scheme, just as she performed the symbolic presentation of cheques to some of the beneficiaries of the scheme in Abuja.

First Lady Tinubu, who performed both tasks during a launch ceremony, held at the State House Conference Centre, Presidential Villa, Abuja, in her speech, advised beneficiaries of the interest and collateral-free loans scheme to invest their money strategically.

Tinubu said the present administration is now poised to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country so as to create a ripple effect for employment generation for Nigerians.

She said such support goes a long way in serving as a lifeline to those struggling to make ends meet while enhancing the overall well-being of individuals and families.

According to the First Lady, the transformative impact that MSMEs can have on the lives of the vulnerable ones in our society cannot be overemphasized, considering the fact that enterprises are the bedrock of our economy.

She said it plays a crucial role in fostering inclusive growth and providing tangible benefits to those who need it most, especially women and persons with disability.

Buttressing her position further, Tinubu’s wife said small-scale businesses provide a platform for the economic empowerment of those with limited resources who can become self-reliant entrepreneurs when equipped with skills and a supportive environment.

She said: “It is in this regard, that the rebranding of the three components of this programme is significant. Thus, Tradermoni (now rebranded Owo Oja or Olilanya Ndi Nagbambo or Tallafin Sana’a); Farmermoni (now rebranded Owoagbe or Olilanya Ndi Oru Ugbo or Tallafin Manoma); and Marketmoni (now rebranded Iyaloja or Nne Ahia or Agajin Yan Kasuwa).

“These rebranding drums home, especially among the womenfolk including traders and farmers, a deeper understanding and actual implication of the programme in our native languages.

“As I was informed that one of the strategic components of the Federal Government’s National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) is the Rebranded and Expanded Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), this Programme is expected to focus, amongst others, on offering interest and collateral-free loans to small scale entrepreneurs thereby providing financial inclusion and enabling individuals with limited resources to access much-needed capital for entrepreneurial endeavours.

“This democratization of financial resources helps break down barriers and empowers the poor to participate actively in economic activities.”

Bemoaning traditional loans from commercial banks, she said such loans often come with high-interest rates and stringent requirements for collateral, making it challenging for those with limited assets to secure funds.

She stated: “Eliminating these barriers, through Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) programmes create a more accessible and supportive environment for individuals to start and expand their businesses.

“Such financial support enhances the overall sustainability of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Small businesses often face cash flow challenges, and the absence of exorbitant interest rates ensures that entrepreneurs can invest profits back into their businesses, fostering growth and resilience. This, in turn, contributes to job creation and economic stability within communities.

“My words of advice to those who might secure interest and collateral-free loans through this Programme is that you should plan wisely, exercise financial discipline in managing the funds, invest strategically, be committed to a repayment agreement, and be flexible to be able to navigate the dynamic business landscape.

“It is on this note, that I hereby flag off the Renewed Hope Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Programme to the glory of God, and wish you all a successful participation in the scheme. May all those who participate in the scheme prosper in their various business ventures”, she said.

In her speech, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, said the Market-Moni scheme targeted at one and a half million beneficiaries across various states in the country would cover all the 109 senatorial districts.

The minister said one major market from each of the senatorial districts would be taken, adding that each beneficiary would receive interest and collateral-free loans of N50,000 after registration.

Edu stated: “We are at a point to lift 50 million Nigerians out of poverty. They will be registered in the market. Their BVN will also be registered in the market…it is taking governance to the people.

“As soon as they register, a loan of N50,000 will be given to them, to use it for their businesses. The target for this is 1.5 million Nigerians that will benefit. We have other programmes that are within that bracket. Some of them are special projects targeted at Nigerians.

“I must say that Mr President is in a hurry to change Nigeria for the better within the next year. Other projects include the N-Power projects, the home-grown school feeding projects, the new special vehicle which is the End-Hunger project, by the Grace of God the President will be flagging that off next month, etc.

“Beyond this, we are going to also launch other projects that will help young people to get coding skills. We have several other projects.

“There are several interventions. We are dealing with multi-dimensional poverty so that in the end, we will have a nation that is strong under God, that its citizens will beat their chest and say indeed I am proud to be a Nigerian, and the Renewed Hope has truly come.”

Meanwhile, some of the beneficiaries of the scheme who spoke to journalists at the end of the event, expressed appreciation to the federal government for the interest-free loans, thanking the First Lady especially for her role.

The Women Leader at the Gwagwalada Main Market, Hajia Rekiya Shauibu, who said she deals in foodstuffs, iced fish and dried fish, described the loan as capital, saying, “N50,000 is capital, anywhere you fix it, it’s going to help. It’s not too small for a start and it’s not too big for a start.”

Also, Mrs Ironic Ude, an iced fish seller, expressed excitement over the loan, saying, “I’m very excited today, we were in the market when people from the Ministry of Humanitarian Services came to our market and informed us about this and today, I am here in the Villa, I am very happy because I am a beneficiary.”

To Mrs Malomo Mojisola, who deals in children’s items “This is to augment the business and it will go a long way. I’m happy because I know, to become a beneficiary is not easy. Out of thousands, few are chosen and to the glory of God, I’m among the ones that were chosen. N50,000, if God multiplies it, it can become N50 million, N500 billion, N500 trillion and so on.

For Mrs Saratu Maikeffi, a widow, who runs a small grinding machine business, the N50,000 is like a million naira to her, thanking President Tinubu and the First Lady.

“This will support me more and I’m very happy. This N50,000 e be like a million to me, I’m a widow. I thank God. May God bless the President’s wife and the President, please deliver my message to them. I’m very happy”, Mrs Maikeffi said.

Also speaking, the very excited Assistant Women Leader at Gwagwalada Market, Mrs Harira Hudu, who is a food vendor, described the loan as real help, praying for the wife of the President.

She said: “I happy to come to Villa, if not for Tinubu’s wife, I for nor fit come. Since all these years, I never come here, but today I’m very happy, happy, too much, because I come here today, they treated me fine, I enjoyed myself.

“I want her to come and do this again o, she no go fall from this chair o (Office of the First Lady), she go just dey go up and continue to dey help us. Now she don help us with N50,000, this one na real help for me; I go buy rice, I go buy tomatoes, I go buy pepper, I go use am cook food, everybody go eat and enjoy this our money for business. I be food seller.”

  • Mid-air panic: How our Abuja-bound flight from Paris made U-turn

Mid-air panic: How our Abuja-bound flight from Paris made U-turn

    By Yushau Shuaib

“Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking. We regret to announce that because of a technical problem, we have to return to Paris for safety and security.”

That was the announcement by the Captain of the Abuja-bound Air France flight on Monday, October 23, 2023, that departed Charles De Gaulle (CDG) Airport in Paris after over two hours in mid-air en route to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Nigeria. Air France flies to over 200 international destinations in more than 90 countries across Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

The announcement for the U-turn was made after the plane had passed European airspace, flew over the Mediterranean Sea, crossed over North African countries of Tunisia and Algeria and was just about approaching Niger Republic in the scheduled six-hour flight.

As I looked around, I could see and feel the agitation in the minds and body language of the bewildered passengers. We were confused but everyone remained obediently calm and prayerful. An old Nigerian woman who was depressed voiced out loudly: “The pilots should park the plane in any nearby airport to fix the trouble!”

I joined an air attendant and other passengers on board to pacify the woman so that she wouldn’t suffer shock or any cardiovascular attack. Meanwhile, deep inside me, I knew that other passengers needed similar pacification going by their disturbing glances.

Those that were formerly watching movies and listening to music from the video screen on the seats had now switched their channel to the route map that shows the direction of the flight as it made a U-turn towards Paris. At that moment, I remembered those verses in the scriptures and scenes of horror movies on D-Day and what might finally unfold.

I could not shake off the negative, horrific thoughts from my head. I comforted myself by realising that I had said my early morning prayers to Almighty God. I nevertheless regretted that I couldn’t speak to my mother and other loved ones the previous days. I remembered old friends that I had wished to catch up with.

I again realised that everything about this world, including wealth, fame, families, position and power, were indeed nothing. There were top politicians, businessmen and celebrities in the business class and so, if anything happened, my name would not make the headlines. The editors may cast their headlines thus: “Top Politicians, Business Tycoons, Celebrities Perish in Ill-fated Airplane.”

I wished I had shared the pictures we took at the Golden World Award hosted by the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) in Barcelona, Spain, where my Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), which publishers PRNigeria, and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) were honoured with Crisis Management Awards before the trip to Paris. With the award trophy in my traveling bag, it dawned on me that there are crises that award-winning Crisis Managers cannot manage.

I felt my seatbelt as if I was tightened to the stake in a firing squad expecting the executioners to pull the trigger. I queried myself for deciding to enjoy a few days transit in Paris for holidays with my wife just to satisfy the Schengen visa requirement offered by the French Embassy. Unfortunately, none of the pictures we took at tourist sites in Paris had been shared to anyone. The pictures, including our visits to the famous Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre Museum, etc., were saved on our phones.

Like a child, I consciously blamed no one but myself for looking for ‘trouble’ travelling by air every time when I could have taken the risk of road transportation which could have been safer in case of an emergency and by which someone’s body can be easily retrieved for a befitting burial.cTrivial conversation by passengers, revving of the plane engine, and sound of movement were so irritating to my eardrum.

I wished facemasks, ear-masks, nose-masks and even strong sleeping pills could be provided to relieve us of the excessive tension. The jerking by the plane prompted me back to the reality around me. I wished the air hostess could once again demonstrate the safety tips and instructions for emergency purposes which I always ignored or paid no attention to previously.

The jolt of the aircraft ran shivers down my veins as I quickly connected my device to Wi-Fi and Googled ‘air turbulence’. I was comforted to read that air turbulence might be a bit uncomfortable, but it is regarded as normal because planes are built to handle the worst scenarios.

I gathered that for a plane to fly stably, airflow passing over and under the wings need to be regular – though some weather events cause irregularity which creates air pockets; that with clear air, temperature inversion and turbulence, passengers’ safety is guaranteed once they fasten seat belt; that turbulence could create panic among passengers but do not cause a plane to crash because pilots are specially trained while aircraft are engineered to survive all types of turbulence.

Though I was not sitting by the door, I was shocked when I read that if a plane door was suddenly thrust open, anyone standing near the exit would be ejected into the sky; the cabin temperature would quickly plummet to frostbite-inducing levels, and the plane itself might even begin to break apart. I deliberately refused to look at the passengers sitting by the doors out of sympathy as I prayed for our safe landing.

For the first time in that moment, I was envious and jealous of those that hardly travel but rely on technology from the comfort of their homes and offices to attend conferences, receive certificates, bag awards, make friends and tour sites of attractions from internet-enabled devices and programmes.

The cabin crew members were busy attending to passengers’ needs with words of reassurance even as the flight was smooth. I watched with keen interest as the airplane tactically maneuvered in the cloud and sky till it remained about 30 minutes until landing when the pilot confirmed the same. The landing was a huge relief because of my experience during the flight. I could hear different names of God in victory songs and prayers renting the air.

When we alighted, the Air France personnel provided us with meal tickets and checked us into decent hotels for next available flights mostly through codeshare agreement with other airlines. The following day, we were booked and checked-in with Lufthansa Airline which took us to Munich and Frankfurt on transit before finally landing safely in Abuja.
