  • Striking teachers and shut schools in Abuja

Striking teachers and shut schools in Abuja

Sir: In Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), right in the heart of Nigeria’s seat of power, pupils in public primary schools have remained at home with public primary schools shut as a result of the industrial action embarked upon by primary school teachers over wages.

What this means is that for more than two months now, human capital development in children from low-income households has completely ground to a halt, stalled by the strike of their teachers.

As is customary with industrial actions, there was surely a flurry of engagements between the teachers and the government, and a series of warnings and interventions. If none of these worked, the only reasonable conclusion is that someone did not do enough to prevent what is a catastrophe for human capital development in Nigeria.

This is not the first time this is happening to primary school pupils within the Federal Capital Territory. In fact, this latest strike action is threatening to become a recurrent development.

It is sad that children in public primary schools are getting used to strike actions because their teachers are disgruntled over wages. It is even sadder that the authorities have shown a lack of tact in managing what has been a thorny problem, leading to more than three such interruptions in the last three years.

Nigeria is a country of boundless potential. With its abundance of human and natural resources, Nigeria should have no business with multidimensional poverty. Yet, tragically, 83% of the world’s extremely poor people now live in Nigeria. Never has there been a better case study of what happens when management fails than the country as it is today.

At the heart of this crisis lie children. The children the country failed to train yesterday have become its problem today. The children it is failing to train today would surely pose a handful tomorrow.

A country that allows its schools to close is one that opens its gates to its enemies. Every shut school is a highway to prison as education is the foundation of every egalitarian society; and without education, crime, and poverty enjoy a field day.

Education is invaluable to the human person. For children, especially those from extreme poverty, it is a lifeline, an equaliser, an indescribable gift.

No sane country would allow this kind of systematic compromise of its future to happen on its watch. Given the critical role human capital development plays in national development, no serious society would allow the human capital of its youngest to fall under the hammer of systemic labour disputes, poor funding and regulatory inefficiency.

It is roundly scandalous that the pupils were allowed to miss their end-of-term exams and have again been missing crucial school work in the new term with devastating consequences for the children, their families, and the country at large.

Every day the children spend at home is a lost opportunity for Nigeria. The loss of social and economic value through the lack of human capital development in children, zero productivity from the striking teachers and interruptions to the jobs or businesses of parents whose schedules have been disrupted because children who should be in school are at home.

The consequences of this kind of disruption are usually years in the making. But come they must, especially for a country where critical sectors are managed by grossly irresponsible and embarrassingly inept people.

This is a very dangerous and heartbreaking situation, Dabiri-Erewa said, reacting to the news of the 19 victims. She urged the government to declare a war against human trafficking, stressing that it is not just a NAPTIP problem but a national problem, requiring all relevant agencies to work together.

“No agency can do this alone,” she stressed, and added that NAPTIP needs full support, better funding, flexible policies, and unflinching political will. We must unite to protect our young people from predators.

Dabiri-Erewa also acknowledged the support of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Wema Bank, civil society groups, neighbouring countries, and Nigerian Diaspora communities in the rescue and reintegration of trafficked persons.

In her remarks, Hajia Bello reiterated that human trafficking is a growing menace that cannot be tackled in isolation.

She commended NiDCOM for its consistent support, particularly during the recent rescue of 231 young Nigerians from Ghana, and expressed hope for deeper cooperation between both agencies.

“We need massive public awareness. Every household, every school, every community must be informed about the evil of trafficking,” she said.

Bello reaffirmed NAPTIP’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of vulnerable Nigerians, while pushing for broader societal vigilance and accountability.

The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge by both agencies to intensify advocacy, rescue operations, and policy reforms aimed at crushing trafficking networks and protecting Nigeria’s youth from exploitation.

Court halts development of Abuja multi-million naira market project

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued an order stopping further development works on the planned multi-million Abuja market project known as the Apo Resettlement Market Scheme.

Justice Yusuf Halilu, in a ruling, ordered the AMAC Investment and Property Development Company Limited, Commercial Properties Ltd, Manillah Integrated Partners Ltd, and their agents to halt any further works on the market project located at plot 1729 Cadastral Zone E27, Apo, Abuja.

The interlocutory restraining injunction, Justice Halilu said, is to subsist until the determination of a suit brought against Dr. Shuaibu Omeiza Musari and his company, Techs and Concretes Nigeria Ltd, by AMAC Investment, Commercial Properties, and Manillah Integrated.

The ruling delivered on April 15 was on the application filed by Techs and Concretes Nigeria Ltd, with which it sought to preserve the subject of the dispute between the parties in the suit, marked: CV/467/2024.

Techs and Concretes Nigeria Ltd stated in a supporting affidavit that a dispute arose between the parties when Manillah Integrated Partners allegedly decided to breach an agreement between them to jointly develop the market.

It stated that by the joint venture agreement executed between them, Manillah Integrated Partners was designated as the “developer” while Techs and Concretes Nigeria Ltd was designated as the “financier, co-developer and sole marketer.”

Techs and Concretes stated that contrary to the terms of the agreement between them, Manillah Integrated Partners allegedly went behind to unilaterally commenced the development of the market project.

It stated that the suit by Manillah Integrated Partners and others was intended to shield them from being made to comply with the agreement, to get away with their breach of the agreement.

In the ruling of April 15, Justice Halilu said: “From what has played out, as contained in the respective affidavits for and against the application for interlocutory injunction, I am fortified to say that there is indeed an agreement which both parties have signed, is the document at the centre of the misunderstanding.

“The second defendant/applicant (Techs and Concretes Ltd) is entitled, in law, to rely on the same (the agreement) as the basis for establishing legal interest and has indeed established the same as a matter of right, which deserves legal protection.

“I am minded to hold that the balance of convenience hinges heavily in favour of the applicant (Techs and Concretes).

“On the whole, therefore, I have no difficulty granting the application in the overriding interest of justice and fairplay,” the judge said.

On Monday, Dr. Musari, accompanied by some officials of his firm and security personnel, visited the site of the project to paste the court order and notify workers on the site to cease operations as ordered by the court.

Dr. Musari said as a law-abiding citizen, he was not interested in any trouble, but that the right thing should be done, with parties complying with the order of the court and waiting for the final determination of the case.

  • BREAKING: Protesters storm streets in Abuja, Lagos

BREAKING: Protesters storm streets in Abuja, Lagos

Protesters have taken to the streets of Abuja and Lagos despite repeated warnings from the police.

The demonstrations, organised by the Take It Back Movement, are underway in several parts of the country.

In Abuja, activist and movement leader Omoyele Sowore was joined by Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer, as they led demonstrators in defiance of police efforts to disperse them.

In Lagos, a group of protesters was seen with placards in Ikeja, the state capital, continuing their march.

However, in Rivers State, protest efforts were short-lived. Organisers who had gathered at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt were met with teargas from security operatives before the protest could gain momentum.

The Nigeria Police Force had earlier issued a strong statement condemning the protest’s timing, as it coincided with National Police Day, newly designated by the federal government to honour officers of the Force.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, said the protest “appears to be a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police and, by extension, the nation.”

Read Also: Police, protesters head for showdown in Lagos, Abuja

In the statement, Adejobi noted: “The Nigeria Police Force has read in the news that a group called ‘Take it Back Movement’ is planning a protest across various states of the Federation, most especially the Federal Capital Territory, scheduled to hold on Monday 7th April, 2025, a day earmarked by the Federal Government as the National Police Day, to celebrate the resilience and dedication of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.”

He continued, “While not against the exercise of citizens’ right to peaceful assembly and association in Nigeria as enshrined in the Constitution, the Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the motive behind such protest scheduled on the same day the contributions of the Nigeria Police Force to national security is to be celebrated, putting into consideration that such glamorous event would bring together dignitaries from all spheres of life both internationally and within the country, including Foreign Inspectors-General of Police and Diplomats.”

Adejobi further stressed, “In line with best global practices adopted by nations in celebrating the achievements of its Police institution, the Nigerian Government has taken the bull by the horns by declaring every April 7 as National Police Day.

“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is, however, questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.”
