  • FG allays fears over ISIS threat

The Federal Government on Tuesday allayed fears of Nigerians on the possible recruitment and training of ISIS fighters on the Nigerian soil, saying the development is not only illegal, but that the government would curtail it.

The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mansur Dan Ali said the government is aware of the development as the issue would top the agenda of the Meeting of the Ministers of Defence of the Community of Sahel Saharan States (CEN-SAD)  beginning in Abuja on 20th of June.

Addressing journalists on the forthcoming Meeting at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, the Minister said the issue of  “ recruitment and training of ISIS fighters on Nigerian soil is on the table, it is on top of the agenda of the Meeting of the Ministers of Defence of the Sahel Region and it will be discussed elaborately with a view to find lasting solutions to it.

“Such Movements of ISIS members into Nigeria are illegal and the Meeting of the Ministers is aware of it and we are trying to curtail this illegal movement.”

Represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence, Hajiya Saratu Batagarawa, the Minister also said the regional meeting would take strategic decisions on the problems of Boko Haram and its allies, kidnappings and killings by bandits in the Northwest as well as the clashes between Fulani herders and farmers in the Northcentral states of Nigeria.

The Minister said : “These issues are the basis for forming this regional organization to enhance intelligence sharing among member countries, to checkmate trans-border and cross border crimes and  banditry.

“The idea is that crimes have no border and it is incumbent on all member countries to take a holistic approach to arrive at common solutions to the challenge”

He said it was not true that the agreement on the protection of Lake Chad Basin by some countries is being threatened by the fact that some of the countries are reneging on their promises, insisting that the agreement is not only intact by also the resolve to defeat terror in the basin.

According to the Minister the 7th Meeting of Ministers of Defence of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN/ SAD) would take place in Abuja, Nigeria from 20th -22nd June, 20l 8.

Alhaji Dan Ali explained that the sub-Regional Organization established in Tripoli, Libya, on 4th February, 1998, following a summit of Heads of States of Libya, Niger, Mali, Sudan and Chad would among others promote amongst member-states cooperation in the field of defence ond security, as well as tackle the thorny issues of insecurity across the sub-Region

Alhaji Dan Ali said: ” At the national level, it is gratifying that the gains accruing from Nigeria’s campaign against terror and insurgency are being consolidated in so many fronts. The Operation Safe Corridor Programme of Nigeria, for instance, is worth emulating by other CENSAD member-States. The Operation is aimed at addressing the suffering of the people of the North East and fast-tracking the peace process. lt is supposed to de-radicalize, rehabilitate and reintegrate surrendered insurgents.

” There is also the Counter Terrorism Centre at Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser to tackle the root causes of radicalization and proffer appropriate solutions. The Center also helps in countering radical ideologies of fundamentalist groups in Nigeria.

“In addition, the Presidential Committee on the North East initiative (PCNl) serves as the primary national strategy, as well as coordination and advisory body for all humanitarian interventions and developmental efforts in the North East of Nigeria. • Winning the World Cup

From the pictures painted a fortnight ago at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, those who do not believe in the present Super Eagles may need to have a rethink.

Not only is the team now in Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup expected to do well at the championship, the Super Eagles is also being tipped to return to Nigeria with the World Cup trophy in July.

The occasion was the official presentation of the team to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung.

Some of the present team’s strength expected to work for them in Russia, according to the handlers, include their youthfulness, discipline, unity, and the clearance of all their welfare allowances.

The friendly matches they played before the World Cup championship started are also expected to have prepared them better for the championship.

Speaking on the team, the President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick said “This Super Eagles you are seeing today is the most disciplined, the most united in the historiographic literature of the annals of football in the country.

“And I am happy to tell you that according to FIFA statistics, this team is the youngest going to the World Cup, which means this team will serve you for long, this team will serve you in the next five years. We have a team that will prosecute this World Cup and a team that will go for the next World Cup in 2022 and we have a team that will also go for the World Cup in 2026, because you have created that environment for us to thrive.

“I can assure that this team you are seeing today will make Nigeria very proud. It is a team that is very disciple and discipline is the bedrock of any success.

“We thank you for providing that fatherly love at all times and we know when we go to Russia, with your magic wand, by the special grace of God we will come back to this same chamber with the trophy,” he said

Dalung said “Once again Nigeria is drawn in difficult group along our perennial opponents Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.  It is difficult but by no means a mission impossible. The team and the technical crew are in high Spirit and are highly motivated to soar above their opponents at the World Cup.

The captain of the team, Mikel Obi, also sure of victory said: “This is the first time we will be going to a tournament like this without any issues on money, bonuses or anything like that. I think everything is sorted now for us and all we have to do is to go out there as players and make this country proud.

“And with your support as the father and leader of this country, we will go out there, give our best and come back with the trophy.” he assured

This, to some doubting Thomas sounded like a wild goose chase considering the poor performance of their predecessors in the past editions of the FIFA World Cup at the senior level.

The team, according to some football-loving Nigerians, also hasn’t got the experience and exposure most of the World Cup finalists have.

As a starter, they noted that the team may find it very difficult to scale through the group stage as they are up against world football giants including Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

Sensing that it was not going to be an easy task to win the World Cup trophy in Russia, the Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, in his remarks at the short ceremony simply said “Your Excellency, to come out of this difficult group with Argentina, Croatia, Iceland is the first step but I think the players are able to do it.”

Notwithstanding the hurdles the team would have to contend with in Russia, President Buhari gave the team his fatherly blessings.

“This is our time, we look up to you to make us proud. All Nigerians join me in saying to you, best of luck.” he said

With the team playing its first group match against Croatia last Saturday, many football loving Nigerians will continue to pray and hope that such wish for luck will really take the Super Eagles far in tournament.

    Osinbajo humour

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo a fortnight ago again showed that he was supremely qualified to go into comedy.

Those who attended the 2018 Democracy Day Dinner / Gala Night at the old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja will not agree less that Osinbajo will rank high with the best comedians in the country or perform better than them if he ventures into comedy.

When it was his turn to make remarks, Osinbajo made the gathering to laugh and laugh with jokes after jokes.

He started by saying “I for one can say that five years ago if someone had told me that I would be Vice President at all, let alone celebrating three years in office, I would have doubted that they were thinking right, but here we are.

“One of the reasons why I never thought I would be in politics is because I always thought I had enough baggage already.

“I recall that when I was about to rent a place to live, the landlord said to me that there were two kinds of tenants he didn’t want. He did not want a lawyer and he didn’t want an Ijebu man.”

The hall, which was filled to the brim, immediately erupted in laughter.

After the laughter subsided, Osinbajo went on “And I qualified on both disqualifications. So, now you can imagine what it is like to add one more – a politician, to all of that.

“In fact, I was greatly discouraged when a gentleman at an event like this, told a story about how an armed robber walked into a bank and there were three people standing there and he said to the first, pointing a gun at him saying, “Give me your money,” and the man said, “I am a doctor”, and he said “bring your money”. The robber pointed to the next man and said, “I am sure you are a teacher, bring your money.”

“He went to the third person and said give me your money”, and the man replied, “I am a politician”, and he replied saying, “okay, give me my money”.

The gathering again burst out laughing and clapping for the Vice President.

Not done, he added “I think, with all these baggage, one must be careful about being a lawyer, a politician and then an Ijebu man.

This again, made the guests to almost laugh out their hearts from their chests.

    Shattered hope

The expectations of some athletes at the 2018 Democracy Day Dinner / Gala Night held at the old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja appeared to have been dashed.

The occasion was used to receive the Team Nigeria that participated at the XXI Commonwealth Games in Australia.

While making his remarks at the occasion, the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung had disclosed that athletes and officials that excelled at the Games were rewarded with cash bonuses for winning medals.

According to him, Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists were rewarded with $5000, $3000 and $2000 respectively.

But from what played out at the end of the dinner, it was clear that the athletes were still expecting some cash reward from the Presidency.

After Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made his remarks, he went ahead to cut the cake.

Rather than make pronouncement for additional cash for the athletes after Osinbajo cut the cake, the Master of Ceremony (MC) immediately called for the rendition of the national anthem.

Sensing that the event has come to an end without any cash splash on them, the athletes immediately started grumbling before they later filed out of the hall to their waiting bus at the car park.

President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Abuja after two-day official visit to Morocco where he was received and accorded ‘five-star’ Royal reception by the Moroccan leader, King Mohammed VI.

The presidential aircraft conveying the President and some members of his entourage back home from Rabat, Morocco, landed at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 5.15p.m.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Governors of Ebonyi and Jigawa, Dave Umahi and Badaru Abubakar respectively who were part of the President’s entourage to Morocco; the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris and other top government functionaries lined up to receive President Buhari at the airport.

While in Morocco, President Buhari and King Mohammed VI of Morocco held bilateral talks where Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco signed three agreements, which included a regional gas pipeline that will see Nigeria providing gas to countries in West Africa sub-region that extend to Morocco and Europe.

The two African leaders also focused on strengthening economic relations in gas resource development, global investments and agricultural training and management.

The feasibility study of the agreement on the pipeline would be concluded by July 2018, while construction of the pipeline would be phased based on needs of countries over the next 25 years.

The 5,660 km long Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) will reduce gas flaring in Nigeria, encourage diversification of energy resources and cut down poverty through the creation of more job opportunities.

The NMGP will further encourage utilisation of gas in the sub-region for cooking, and discourage desertification.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the two-day President’s official visit, Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco affirmed their will to create South-South cooperation model.

To this end, the two countries welcomed the significant progress made in various areas of cooperation, such as agriculture, fertiliser production, energy infrastructure and mining.

The communique, which was issued in Abuja on Monday, said King Mohammed VI and President Buhari had noted with satisfaction the milestones achieved and underscored their commitment to the agreement signed on the Regional Gas Pipeline.

The pipeline will connect Nigeria’s gas resources, those of some West African countries and Morocco, thereby fostering integration and development of countries in the West African region.

The two Heads of State also noted progress made in other areas of the bilateral cooperation, as evidenced by the Agreement between OCP of Morocco and the Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria to invest in fertiliser production.

They noted that already the Memorandum of Understanding between OCP and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority on the establishment of a Basic Chemicals Platform, specifically to develop a significant Ammonia Production Plant had been signed.

”On the basis of their exemplary cooperation, the two Heads of State agreed to develop a partnership in the field of agriculture, particularly through the signing of Cooperation Agreement on vocational training and technical supervision,” the two leaders said.

On regional and international issues of mutual interest and concern, King Mohammed VI and President Buhari confirmed their willingness to consult and coordinate the positions of the two countries in regional and international organizations, including the African Union.

President Buhari congratulated King Mohammed VI on Morocco’s election to the Peace and Security Council of the African Union.

He also congratulated him on the successful completion of his mandate as African Leader on Migration Issues.

He further noted that this had culminated in the presentation of the African Agenda for Migration and the creation of the African Observatory on Migration.

President Buhari also paid tribute to the personal commitment of King Mohammed VI to sustainable development in Africa.

On his part, King Mohammed VI congratulated President Buhari for his leadership in the regional initiative against terrorism in the Lake Chad region.

He also lauded his efforts in the fight against corruption and his role as the African Union anti-corruption champion.

The two Heads of State, in the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan, according to the communique, underscored their commitment to moderation, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, as taught by Islam.

The two leaders also expressed deep concerns about violent extremism, terrorism and the persistence of security threats in Africa.

They affirmed their resolve to strengthen cooperation in efforts to combat radicalization in Africa and beyond.

”The visit reinforces the positive bilateral relationship between Morocco and Nigeria since the Royal Visit to Abuja in Dec. 2016.

”At the end of the working visit, President Buhari, on behalf of his delegation, expressed his deep appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Government and the brotherly people of Morocco,” the communique said.

President Buhari also met with the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Morocco, Saadeddine Othmani, at the Royal Guest Palace, Rabat, Morocco, on Monday.

Buhari also met with the head of the Moroccan legislature, Habib El Malki and the President of the Advisers on Commerce, Ben Chemmas.

The Nigerian leader ended his two-day visit to the Kingdom of Morocco with a visit to the mausoleum where he laid wreaths on the tombs of past kings.
