School feeding addresses Nigeria’s nutritional challenges – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Monday that one of the reasons the present administration’s Homegrown School Feeding Programme was conceived was to address problems of malnutrition, especially among primary school pupils.

Osinbajo stated this while receiving a delegation of Nigerian human nutritionists led by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Osinbajo, the Federal Government will be ready to collaborate with states where nutrition issues are most urgent in prioritising the implementation of the school feeding programme.

Already, 14 states are benefiting from the programme across the country, with almost three million pupils being fed daily.

The vice president said the government would consider inaugurating the National Council on Nutrition.

He, however, urged the experts to come up with an action plan to effectively address the malnutrition challenges in the country.

Abubakar, who came with leaders of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, had detailed the concerns of Nigerian professional human nutritionists on malnutrition challenges and how Nigeria was faring on the global nutrition targets.

The delegation urged the federal government to inaugurate a National Council on Nutrition to address the situation.

Ndume’s constituents rally in Abuja ahead of his return

Suspended Senator representing Borno South, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, is expected to resume next week after serving out his six months suspension.

Ahead of Ndume’s return, his supporters from his constituency demonstrated solidarity for the lawmaker in Abuja.

The supporters held a rally at the Unity Fountain, Abuja chanting Ndume’s praise.

Led by the Coordinator, Ndume Support Initiative, Ibrahim Muazzamu, the group said that they were in Abuja in show of solidarity for Ndume.

Muazzamu told reporters they gathered to “initiate a programme that will mark the ‘countdown’ to the resumption of Distinguished Senator from his unjustified suspension”.

He said that the constituents had not heard of any instance where it was said in any quarters that Ndume would not resume after the expiration of his suspension.

He said, “We are carrying out the rally to voluntarily stage our support for him.

“This is a show of our love and passion for his efforts toward Southern Borno and indeed Nigeria.

“We also recognise his effort in the fight against corruption which is in line with the agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

He insisted that they were confident that Ndume would resume in the Senate in spite of any unforeseen circumstances.

“The resumption has been fixed and we believe nothing will change that,” he said.

He noted that the constituents were expectant that the lawmaker would continue in his effort toward the development of the area.

“We missed a lot of his representation during the period of his suspension,” he said.

Ndume was suspended on March 27, 2017, sequel to the adoption of the recommendations of its Committee on Ethic, Privileges and Public Petitions.

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, led by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, recommended that Ndume be suspended.

The Borno lawmaker in his point of Order called for investigation into the allegation by the Customs Service alleging that the Senate President refused to pay duty of N74m for a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) valued at N298m imported into the country by Saraki.

Ndume also called on the upper chamber to investigate another allegation of certificate forgery leveled against Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West).

The Ethics committee, which investigated the allegations cleared Senate President and Senator Melaye.

  • Pandemonium as task force, traders clash in Abuja

    •Market not closed, says Authority

The Area 10 market in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, popularly known as UTC is under lock and key following a clash between the taskforce hired to control illegal activities and some squatters in the market.

Due to the conflict, security operatives have taken control of the market to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

When The Nation visited the market it was gathered that the market has been shut as a result of the fight between one taskforce officer and an illegal occupant who failed to cooperate with the taskforce, a development that led to destruction of property.

One of the traders, who said his name is Sunday Femi, told our correspondent that the crisis started when a taskforce officer ordered one of the squatters to remove his wares from the corridor since his goods are blocking free movement of customers.

The squatter whose identity was not disclosed refused to carry out the instruction of the taskforce, a development that provoked the taskforce officer to strike him down with alleged charms.

According to him: “the problem in this market started since on Friday and that day, one of the taskforce officers instructed a squatter to remove his goods from the road since the boy has refused to cooperate with them. This particular boy refused to carry out the order. The taskforce was provoked and slapped him with charms. He fell down flat and he was unconscious for over 15 minutes. After some time, the taskforce officer revived him by pouring spit on his hand and rubbed it on the squatter’s body.

“When one of the relations of the victim was informed of what happened, he mobilized others and vandalized the office of Abuja Market Management Limited. At this point, the police came in and chased all traders away.”

Another trader, Kenneth Ndubisi, who spoke said that the police was invited to curtail possible breakdown of law and order since the development was taken a dangerous dimension.

“I was not present when the crisis started, but the little I witnessed, it was becoming volatile and if not checked by law enforcement agencies, it might spread beyond the market,” Ndubisi affirmed.

However, when our correspondent contacted the management of Abuja Market Management Limited (AMML), for comment, the Managing Director, Mr. Abubakar Faruk, said that the taskforce was merely carrying out a routine cleanup of the market, which some illegal operators tried to obstruct.

He also debunked rumour in some quarters that UTC market has been closed down due to crisis between taskforce and operators, stressing that the ongoing cleanup exercise is to bring sanity into the market.

“First and foremost, let me make it clear that UTC Market is not closed. I want to also stress that there are no squatters in UTC Market or any market managed by Abuja Market Management Limited. What people see in most markets are illegal operators. The taskforce and other law enforcement agents are always in our markets to ensure that these illegal operators do not exist and to bring sanity to the market. Basically, it was a situation of taskforce who was carrying out his duty and was being obstructed by an illegal operator.

“As we speak, a committee is meeting with the Abuja Market Management Limited, and we have gotten a firm commitment from the leaders of the traders to replace all damaged property and to fashion out measures to curtail future occurrence. It must be made clear too that hawking is prohibited in all our markets and anybody caught will face AEPB Mobile Court,” Faruk stated.

  • FG to improve reading culture

    FG to improve reading culture

The Federal Government ( FG ) has reaffirmed its commitment to promotion of reading culture among Nigerians.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said this at the Grand Finale of the 2017 Readership Promotion Campaign of the National Library of Nigeria in Abuja.

The theme of the programme is “Working Together to Build a Virile Reading Nation: Challenges and Strategies’’.

Adamu, who was represented by the Director of Education Support Services, Mrs Justina Ibe of the ministry, said that it was imperative for all to cultivate a positive attitude to reading.

He said the ministry had partnered with the National Action Committee on Read Campaign and this partnership had yielded immeasurable benefits.

According to him, readership promotion is a strategy which will address the issue of falling standard of education in the country.

“It will also mobilise the citizenry to read, write and contribute to rejuvenation and actualisation of total literacy culture in Nigeria.

“Appropriate measure should, therefore, be adopted to turn the country to a reading nation and her citizens to a reading people.

“Federal government ( FG ) will also strive to provide adequate funds to acquire sufficient, current and relevant library materials for schools and libraries.’’

Adamu urged Nigerians to encourage shared reading, saying that children should be educated on the importance of books and reading to their education and future lives.

He further called on civil servants to have the veracity to read letters, memoranda and reports, minute to them to handle as this would add to their career development.

Earlier in his remarks, the National Librarian, Prof. Lenrie Aina, said that the target of the National Library of Nigeria had been to encourage secondary school children to embrace a reading culture.

Aina said that it would also extend such exercise  to pregnant women, saying that studies had shown that in the later stages of pregnancy, unborn babies are aware of the vibrations that the voices produce and can recognise them with ease.

“Our objective is to cover the whole strata of the Nigerian society. It is my desire that as many as that have come to witness this occasion would imbibe the culture of reading, particularly the students.

“Also representatives of schools, especially teachers, should ensure that students are encouraged to read and parents should endeavour to read always to the admiration of their children.

“Parents should make books available to their children; to lavishly present books as gift to their children during special events of their lives such as birthday, religious and cultural festivals,’’ he advised.

He encouraged Nigerians to establish libraries in their domains as waiting for the government to do everything may take time.

In his remarks, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said that the importance of reading in any nation could not be overemphasised.

Mohammed, represented by Mr Makna Sallau, the Acting Director, Entertainment and Creative Services in the ministry, said a nation which citizens had lost interest in reading would be backward.

According to him, there is no developing or developed nation where the culture of reading is not given adequate attention that it deserves in order to promote and advance socio-economic, technological  and infrastructure development.

“It is worthy to note that knowledge is power and most of the ideas that rule the world today are all written in book form for us to figure them out.

“Hence, there is an urgent need for us to promote the culture of reading in our country,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that about 12 schools within the FCT participated in the readership promotion campaign.

The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave Inuwa an option of N25,000 fine.
