I’m not LP member under Abure, says Okonkwo

A chieftain of the Labour Party, Kenneth Okonkwo, has clarified that he is not a member of the party if Julius Abure remains the party’s chairman.

He stated this on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily,  yesterday.

“As it is now, I have already left if Abure is the Chairman,” he said.

In July 2024, the actor-turned-politician announced his departure from the LP.

Okonkwo, a former spokesman for the Labour Party’s presidential campaign council, also parted ways with the former presidential candidate of LP, Peter Obi.

However, during the programme, Okonkwo cleared the air on his resignation, insisting that he is still a member of the LP.

He warned that he was against the LP leadership under Abure.

“I am a member of the Labour Party, but not under Julius Abure. If Abure manages to wangle himself and becomes the National Chairman, it is automatic,” he stated.

Labour Party has been embroiled in a crisis as both the party’s Caretaker Committee, Esther Nenadi Usman and Abure have been laying claim to the LP’s leadership position.

Earlier, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) invalidated Abure’s leadership, saying the national convention violated the constitution and Electoral Act.

The situation forced the party to appoint Usman, a former senator representing Kaduna South, Esther Usman, on September 4, 2024, as the chair of its 29-member caretaker committee after Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, convened a stakeholders meeting of the party in Umuahia.

LP caretaker committee disputes Abure’s Appeal Court victory

The national caretaker committee of the Labour Party (LP) yesterday told Julius Abure to steer clear of the party affairs irrespective of Friday’s ruling of the Court of Appeal which affirmed him as the LP National Chairman.

Senator Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee which was constituted by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the party’s  presidential candidate in the 2023 Peter Obi,warned Abure to stop parading himself as LP national chair.

The committee, in a statement signed by Senator Usman and the national secretary   Darlington Nwokocha, faulted the Appeal Court’s ruling because, as they claimed ,  the judgement of the  Federal High Court which formed the basis of the  Appeal Court’s verdict,  lacked jurisdiction, made errors, and violated their right to a fair hearing.

Their words: “As the duly recognised National Caretaker Committee Chairman and Secretary of the Labour Party, we, on behalf of ourselves and other members, deem it necessary to issue this press release to clarify and set the record straight.

“The Court of Appeal affirmed that Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1271/2024, filed before the Federal High Court by Julius Abure, concerned a leadership dispute over which the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction.

“The Federal High Court erred and acted without jurisdiction by entertaining the leadership dispute brought before it by Julius Abure. It also violated our right to a fair hearing by failing to consider our counter-affidavit opposing the suit before it.

“Finally, we wish to remind the public that, on 4th September 2024, the Labour Party constituted a National Caretaker Committee, appointing us as the national chairman and secretary. Both have been diligently and effectively carrying out their duties to the admiration of stakeholders and the entire membership of the party.”

In the Friday  judgement delivered by Hamma Barka, the Appeal Court held that its November 2024  decision, recognising Abure as the party’s chairman, remains valid and has not been overturned by any court.

The ruling came in response to two separate appeals filed by Nenadi Usman, the party’s caretaker committee, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Barka held that the appellate court, in the two separate appeals, did not address the leadership dispute within the party because such matters are not justiciable.

He said anything that is done outside jurisdiction amounts to a nullity.

Consequently, the court voided a judgement of the federal high court delivered on October 8, 2024, by Emeka Nwite on the grounds that the lower court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the suit.

LP crisis: Abure, Obi allegedly plot Otti’s expulsion

In a new twist to the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party, the embattled National Chairman, Julius Abure and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have reportedly joined forces to orchestrate the removal of Abia Governor Alex Oti from the party.

The plot, allegedly driven by a series of accusations levelled against the Governor, comes amid mounting internal conflicts threatening to fracture the already divided party.

Sources close to the Abure-led faction confirmed this latest maneuver is rooted in suspicions that Gov Oti is working with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and lending his support to President Bola Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“It is reported that the core  the dispute centers around an allegation that Gov. Oti, who is the only Labour Party Governor in Nigeria, recently made a controversial statement suggesting that, in his bid for a second term, it would be only fair to support President Tinubu’s aspiration for a second tenure.

“This remark alleged to have made by Gov. Oti during a private visit to President Tinubu last week, has reportedly set off alarm bells within the Labour Party leadership, which perceives such sentiments as a betrayal of the party’s ideals and an overt attempt to align with the ruling APC.

“In response, Abure and Obi, both of whom are reportedly displeased by Oti’s stance, are said to have united in an effort to expel him from the party in order to preserve its integrity and to prevent a potential defection,” the sources added.

The duo was said to have also accused Oti of using the formation of the Labour National Caretaker Committee as a gimmick to influence Obi to support the removal of Abure from office.

Sources also stated that Peter Obi is expected to meet with the Abure led National Working Committee (NWC) sometimes within the week to finalise plans to rid the party of Oti.

The meeting, which is expected to be high-stakes, will likely chart the next course of action, including formalising plans to electronically register 20million Labour Party members and file charges of anti-party activities against the Governor.

This clandestine plot, however, appears to be part of a broader strategy to consolidate control over the party, as Abure and Obi are both keen to ensure that Oti’s alleged ties to the APC do not further jeopardize Labour Party’s future prospects.

Interestingly, Abure had always maintained a public posture that suggests he was in disagreements with Obi. However, facts have emerged he has been working secretly with Obi underground to relaunch the crisis ridden Labour Party for 2027 elections.

Although, Gov. Oti, on his part, has yet to publicly address the accusations levelled against him. Sources within his camp suggest that he remains resolute in his stance, emphasising that his comments about supporting President Tinubu for a second term were made in the interest of his own political future.

As a Governor seeking re-election, Oti reportedly believes that securing the support of the current administration is a pragmatic step to ensure his political survival, especially given the challenges he face. However, this political calculus has not gone down well with the leadership of the Labour Party, which views such gestures as a direct threat to its ideological foundation.

As the political drama unfolds, the question remains: will Gov. Oti be able to weather the storm and retain his position as the only Labour Party Governor in Nigeria or will Abure and Obi succeed in orchestrating his ouster?

The coming days will be critical, and all eyes are now on the Labour Party’s National Working Committee and its leadership to see how they handle this explosive crisis.

    • Nnewi national convention validated

A Federal High Court in Abuja has declared that the Labour Party (LP) national convention held in March in Nnewi, Anambra State, was valid, constitutional and in line with all laid down laws in Nigeria.

Delivering judgment yesterday, Justice Emeka Nwite directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to grant due recognition and all privileges to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) led by Julius Abure as its National Chairman.

Reacting to the judgment in a statement, Abure described it as “a new dawn for Labour Party”.

The statement said the outcome of the judgment was “victory for justice and democracy”.

LP has been writhing in a crisis after the Nnewi convention that returned Abure and his team.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti convened a stakeholders’ meeting in August to resolve the lingering crisis in the party.

The meeting produced a former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Nenadi Usman, as LP’s caretaker committee chairman with the mandate to reposition the party.

The governor argued that the tenure of the party’s current leadership had expired long ago.

But the Abure-led exco rejected the committee, asking Otti to focus on governance instead of struggling for the control of the party.

Abure went to court after INEC refused to recognise his leadership.

Reacting to the court verdict through the statement, Abure said: “It is with immense gratitude and a heart full of forgiveness that I issue this statement following our significant victory at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, has reaffirmed our leadership by upholding the outcome of the Labour Party convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, and consequently compelled INEC to give due recognition to the leadership of Julius Abure.

“This victory is not just mine but a victory for justice and democracy. It confirms that the rule of law prevails and that our party’s leadership remains legitimate. For this, I must first and foremost thank Almighty God for guiding us through this challenging period.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the judiciary, particularly Justice Emeka Nwite, for his courage and integrity in delivering a judgment that upheld justice and resisted external pressures. His well-articulated judgment has restored our faith in the judiciary and given us hope for democracy in Nigeria.

“I must also appreciate Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court, who had earlier validated the Labour Party’s convention held in Nnewi. His judgment became the foundation for other rulings, reflecting the strength and fairness of our judicial system.

Court orders INEC to accord Abure-led LP all rights, privileges allowed by law

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to henceforth, accord the Julius Abure-led leadership of the Labour Party (LP) all rights and privileges due to any registered political party in the country.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order on Tuesday, October 8, in a judgment on a suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1271/2024 filed by the LP, with INEC listed as the sole defendant.

Justice Nwite held that given the credible and verifiable documentary evidence presented by the plaintiff, the INEC failed in its “attempt to impeach the validity of the leadership of the plaintiff.”

The judge added: “I hereby make an order compelling the defendant (INEC) to accord the plaintiff political party, under the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure, all the rights and privileges accorded a political party duly registered in Nigeria.”

He also ordered INEC to conduct, for staff of the plaintiff, a refresher training for the upload of LP’s agents into the INEC portal and to issue the plaintiff (Abure) the Access Code required to access INEC’s portal for the Ondo Governorship Election scheduled to hold on 16th November 2024, as already done for staff of other political parties.

The LP had sued, claiming to have been excluded from participating in the refresher training conducted in August by INEC to familiarise staff from each registered political party’s Information Technology (IT) department on how to upload details of parties’ agents into the INEC portal, during which they were also issued access code to access INEC’s portal to upload agents’s information in respect of the Ondo governorship election.

In a supporting affidavit, Abure had stated that following the death of the National Chairman of the LP, he was lawfully elected as the Acting National Chairman of the party at a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the party held in Benin City, Edo State, on March 29, 2021.

He averred that in line with the consensus that was reached at the party’s  NEC meeting held on April 18, 2023, in Asaba, Delta State and duly monitored by INEC, the LP subsequently held its national convention on March 27, 2024, at Nnewi, Anambra State, where he was elected to the office of national chairman of the party.

He said the party under his leadership produced candidates for governorship elections in both Edo and Ondo states in the names of Olumide Akpata and Olorunfemi Ayodele Festus.

Abure added that since his election at the Nnewi convention, INEC had related to him as the Chairman of the LP, among which an invitation was sent to him on June 28, 2024, along with 18 other National Chairmen of political parties, for the inspection of sensitive election materials for the Ondo and Edo states governorship polls.

He said he was taken surprised when INEC failed to extend to him a later notice for political parties to nominate two persons from their IT unit to undertake training on how to upload data to INEC’s portal for the impending Ondo state gubernatorial election, was not served on him.

Abure stated that he became aware of the existence of the said notice of the training by INEC, on August 21, 2024, because he is a member of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

He argued that his exclusion, and by extension, his party from the training on how to upload agents’ information was unlawful.

    • We’re on rescue mission, says Caretaker Committee Chairman Usman
    • Why chairman had to go, by Baba-Ahmed

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed anger that some of those who begged to join the party ahead of last year’s general election are currently at loggerheads with its leadership.

It expressed disappointment over the role of its presidential candidate in last year’s general election, Mr. Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti in the party’s leadership crisis.

A former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman was appointed the national chair of the LP caretaker committee, following a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Otti.

Obi, and his running mate in the last general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, were among the top party members at the meeting.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Abure faction said: “For the benefit of hindsight, not a few Nigerians will forget how the Labour Party reduced its guards in accommodating some of these leaders when they were denied tickets in their former political parties.

“Many of these men, who are holding several political offices but suddenly turned warriors today, seeking the head of Julius Abure to be served on a platter, were rolling on the floors, begging for tickets. Some couldn’t even afford to pay for the nomination forms.

“The Labour Party leadership went to the trenches with our presidential candidate, cascading through the nooks and crannies of Nigeria canvassing for votes. We went through the entire judicial hurdles, dared the principalities and powers. We were haunted, maligned and, in some cases, chased around by agents of the state because of our unflinching commitment and uncompromised standing with our presidential candidate.

“The same LP leadership stood by our then governorship candidate in Abia through thick and thin, snubbing all sorts of pressures, weathering the political and judicial storms to ensure that victory was achieved. Today, these leaders are now dancing ‘Gwo gwo gwo ngwo’ with us. What a shame, what a betrayal.

“As you are aware, the party has since sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), challenging its exclusion from the commission’s refresher training for uploading party agents ahead of the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.

“However, INEC had, in a counter-affidavit filed in response to our suit, argued that the Labour Party’s leadership, including Julius Abure, is now invalid, stressing that it does not recognise the party’s March 2024 National Convention, which re-elected Abure as chairman.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is, however, miffed by the actions of our leaders, including our former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the only Labour Party governor, Dr. Alex Otti, who should be defending the party at this auspicious and trying moment. They ought to know that the Labour Party is going through these challenging times simply because of its role in defending both leaders during the 2023 general election…”

But Baba-Ahmed explained that Abure was not removed by any governor but by the constitution of the party after the expiration of his tenure.

Baba-Ahmed, who spoke at the inaugural meeting of the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) on Tuesday in Abuja, urged the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) to sheathe their swords and join hands with the caretaker committee to rebuild the party.

He denied the existence of any crisis in the LP, assuring party members that it would win the 2027 presidential election and more seats in the National Assembly.

    …Usman pledges to rebuild party

The vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in last year’s election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said the national chairman of the party, Julius Abure, was not removed by any governor but by the constitution of the party after the expiration of his tenure.

Baba-Ahmed, who spoke during the inaugural meeting of the National Caretaker Committee on Tuesday in Abuja, called on the Abure-led National Working Committee to sheath their swords and join hands with the Caretaker Committee to rebuild the party.

He said: “Listen, my friend, no governor unseated Abure. The constitution unseated him because his (Abure) tenure had elapsed. As of today, Abure is our good friend and a loyal member. We want him back in the fold. We have a role for him to play. Likewise all members of the former NEC and NWC. They are welcome to come and join us and continue to build the Labour Party.”

Baba-Ahmed also said the LP will win the 2027 presidential election and win more seats in the National Assembly.

He said: “We didn’t have a crisis. We managed a transition that was a bit bumpy and that was it. I tell you, no other political party of our size could do that in the time and manner that we did. We are a political party that went all the way to the Supreme Court claiming our 10 million votes. They were only able to give us 6 million votes. So we are a force to contend with in Africa. What we’ve done has never been done before. When PDP came they had the military. We had nothing.

The Chairman of the Labour Party National Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman assured of the committee’s determination to rescue the party from the current challenges and restore and rebuild it as a veritable alternative platform for Nigerians.

She pledged the readiness of the caretaker committee to lead the party to the path of reconciliation within the short period of its assignment.

Usman called for sacrifice from members of the caretaker committee, urging them to carry out their assignment with integrity in the interest of the party and the nation at large.

She said: “My brothers and sisters, we are on a rescue mission, not just for the Labour Party, but I tell you for our dear nation Nigeria. The interest this committee has generated extends beyond party lines. The number of telephone calls I have received not just from Labour Party members, but people from other political parties who told me that if we get this thing right, we will walk together. So we have a huge task.

“Our party by the grace of Almighty God will become a platform for all disenfranchised and unhappy Nigerians. For people who are not happy with the way things are going, we are going to be the platform for them by the grace of God. Therefore, we must view this significant national assignment.”

Deputy governor of Abia state, Ikechukwu Emetu, who represented the Governor, Alex Otti charged the committee members to work for the growth of the Labour Party and shun acts that can be detrimental to the interest of the party.

The secretary of the committee, Senator Darlington Nwokocha said the committee would ensure that it produced elected Ward, LGA, States, and National Officers for the party.

“We have started already, it is something we are working hard to achieve. The organs of the party at all levels will come on board soon, depending on the elasticity of what we are doing, but we want to do a good job, we will do the proper sensitisation, advocacy, consultation, consensus building and so many other legitimate things from the grassroots to the top, to making sure that the proper people are being put in place of leadership, elected from the ward to local government, to states and the national convention.

Abure: Yesufu, Ighodalo, others ran Obi campaign funds

The embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure has said the party or its officials were not responsible for any financial transactions as it related to the presidential campaign of its candidate, Peter Obi in the 2023 election.

Abure said it would be mischievous for any person to accuse him and the party of mismanagement of donations to prosecute the presidential election.

The Suspended National Treasurer of the party, Oluchi Opara accused Abure of diverting N3.5 billion of funds received from the sale of nomination forms by the Labour Party and donations for the prosecution of the 2023 political campaigns.

But Abure said the campaign funds were disbursed, administered in the Southern States by the former Director-General of the Obi-Datti campaign, Dr. Doyin Okupe, and under the control of Akin Osuntokun who took over from Okupe when he resigned.

He also said the funds for the campaign in the 19 Northern States were handled by the Vice Presidential Candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Abure added that the funding of the election was done by the former Anambra State governor himself.

The embattled LP chairman also listed Aisha Yesufu who was a member of the Obi – Datti campaign and Pastor Itua Ighodalo as the sole signatories to the presidential campaign accounts.

Abure added that the duo were responsible for the payment of polling unit agents during the election.

Abure who spoke after the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, said: “I must seize this opportunity to make some clarifications on a few issues. I and the party have been accused of being responsible for Peter Obi’s failure in the 2023 general election. They have stated that the campaign, Election donations, and funds for the payment of agents were mismanaged by the party, hence Peter Obi failed in the Election.

“Let me make it categorically clear that campaign funds were disbursed, administered in the Southern States by the leadership of Doyin Okupe, and Secondly under the control of Akin Oshuntokun while the funding of the Campaign for the 19 Northern States was handled by the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Party Datti Baba-Ahmed. The funding of the election was done by Peter Obi himself.

“As per the donations, the party was not involved in the donations. Donations to the campaign were channeled to the Following Accounts:

    OBI/BABA-AHMED CAMPAIGN ACCOUNT

    Zenith Bank – 1241950451; Sterling Bank – 0091657896; Heritage Bank – 1400234900 and Globus Bank – 1000128194.

“The signatories to these accounts were Aisha Yesufu and Pastor Itua Ighodalo. They were equally responsible for the payment of Polling Unit Agents.

“Consequently, it is mischievous for any person to accuse me and the party for mismanagement of these funds. At no time did the party or its officials engage in any financial transactions as it relates to the presidential campaign.”

Abure said himself and the National Working Committee members of the party elected at the March 27 Convention in Nnewi, Anambra State would defend the mandate given to them.

“It will be safe for me at this point to conclude that I and my colleagues elected in the Convention of our Party held on the 27th day of March 2024 will defend the mandate given to us by Members of this Party. No amount of intimidation or harassment will make us surrender this leadership.

“Together, we will continue to build this party into a formidable force, one that truly represents the interests of all Nigerians. The beautiful ones are not yet to be born, but their birth is near, and it will be through the Labour Party that they will rise to lead this great nation,” he added.

    • Caretaker to conduct election  in party offices within 90 days

The crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) escalated yesterday, despite a strident attempt to resolve it.

National Chairman, Julius Abure, rejected the 29-member interim committee headed by Senator Esther Nnenadi Usman, former Minister of State for Finance, describing it as illegal.

The committee was set up during the extended stakeholders’ meeting of the party convened by the Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the national leader of the party, Mr. Peter Obi.

Otti is the only governor elected on the platform of the party.

Nnenadi, who accepted to lead the party, promised to embark on a rescue mission.

However, the National Working Committee(NWC), led by Abure, a lawyer, described the committee as  unconstitutional.

Although Abure was contacted about the meeting by the convener, he did not show up.

The caretaker committee is made up of three representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), three representatives of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), three Senators, four House of Representatives members, three House of Assembly members, representatives from six geo-political zones, and four former governorship candidates.

The committee’s term of reference is the conduct of party congresses and the national convention within 90 days.

Otti, who hosted the meeting at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Umuahia, said there was an urgent need to save the party from an impending danger that may lead to its extinction.

The governor, who clarified that he was not interested in whoever becomes the national chairman, said if the party was not rescued, it may jeopardize its participation  in future elections.

Otti said while the Abure-led leadership has the right to challenge the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the court, it is better for LP to avoid  any action that may render its actions illegal in the future.

Obi, who described LP as the third largest party in the country, called for unity and support for the caretaker committee.

The NLC National Vice President, Salamatu Aliu, who witnessed the meeting, said the rule of law should be followed in setting up a transition committee.

He said the leadership should be put to rest, adding that previous mistakes should also be avoided.

In a communiqué read  by the 2023 deputy governorship candidate of the party in Plateau State, Edward Pwajok, the stakeholders called on party members in court to withdraw the cases.

They also affirmed their confidence in Obi as the national leader while hailing the setting up of the caretaker committee to fill the leadership vacuum in the party.

The stakeholders commended Otti for his effort to deliver the democratic dividend to the people of Abia State.

Nnenadi Usman, who promised to unite the party, assured that her committee will deliver on the assignment within 90 days.

She said LP should go into future elections as a united front, adding that the party can produce the next president in 2027.

A chieftain, Senator Victor Umeh, said those calling for the resignation of Obi as the national leader are on a white goose chase.

At the meeting were Kelvin Chukwu, Okey Ezea, Victor Lar, Nneji Achonu, Yusuf Datti, Ikechukwu Emetu, Obi Aguocha, Senator Neda Imasuen, Barr. Sunday Umeha, Deputy Speaker, Abia House of Assembly, Austin Okezie Meregini, some LP-NWC members, NEC members; NLC, TUC and other statutory members, former governorship candidates from the six geopolitical zones and Prof. Kenneth Kalu, Secretary to Abia State Government.

    Abure rejects caretaker committee

The Julius Abure-led NWC rejected the caretaker committee,  describing it as illegal and unconstitutional.

He said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, that he remained the  legitimate national chairman.

It described the meeting in Umuahia as a “charade, a waste of time and resources of Abia People.”

The statement reads: “As clearly stated in our previous statement, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and all others who have converged on Umuahia have no power within the Party Constitution, the Electoral Act and even within the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to convene any meeting of the Party.

“The combined reading of the two provisions show clearly that the so called meeting in Umuahia is a charade, a waste of time and resources of Abia People.

“The premise on which Governor Alex Otti called the meeting is not only faulty but mischievous. Government business is not transacted verbally but through official communication and correspondences which are done in writing.

“As we speak, there is no communication whatsoever from INEC to the Party as regards any objection to the conduct of the National Convention.

“We challenge Alex Otti to produce the official letter addressed to him from INEC on the subject matter. There is no vacuum in the leadership of the Party.

“Consequently, the so-called caretaker committee set up by the Governor of Abia State is not known to the constitution of the Party and can best be described as a department in Abia State Government House.

“We are shocked to note that the so-called chairman of the caretaker committee is not a registered member of the Party. She surfaced during the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign to assist Peter Obi in his campaign.”
