Lewandowski mulls free transfer to AC Milan

AC Milan are reportedly trying to secure Barcelona veteran Robert Lewandowski as a free agent when his contract expires in June 2026, and he is giving hope to the Rossoneri.

According to Sky Sport Deutschland, Lewandowski has rejected a proposal from Fenerbahce and is eager to continue playing at a high level next term.

This gives Milan hope they can beat the competition from the Saudi Pro League and a salary offer that they simply couldn’t match.

“I will soon be ready to decide which direction to take,” Lewandowski told TVP Sport, via Calciomercato.

“I will evaluate all the options. I don’t know where I’ll be or what I will want to do in a few months’ time.”

Milan already saw a similar approach prove successful for Luka Modric when his deal was allowed to run down at Real Madrid, as the 40-year-old Croatia international is showing he can still make an impact.

He made the move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona for €45m in 2022 and scored seven goals in 12 appearances for the Blaugrana this season between LaLiga and Champions League.

Chukwueze may miss Roma, AC Milan clash

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze could miss AC Milan’s Serie A clash against AS Roma on Sunday due to fitness issues, Soccernet.ng.

The Rossoneri travel to Stadio Olimpico to take on Roma in what is expected to be a crunch tie due to the quality and history of both clubs. Both of them are chasing European football, as Roma sit in 6th place with 63 points, while AC Milan are 8th with 60 points.

A loss for either side could put paid to their dreams of playing continental football next season.

Roma will be without Lorenzo Pellegrini for the game. And according to SOS Fanta, AC Milan will not have the services of Chukwueze. The 25-year-old forward has an inflammation in his pubic bone, and they would have to treat the problem with care.

His game time has been limited badly, as Conceicao sees him as surplus to requirements. He got his first assist of the season two weeks ago against Bologna, but he got just eight minutes of action in the next game.

  • The San Siro battle

    The San Siro battle

San Siro is the name of the home pitch shared by Inter Milan and AC Milan, two leading football clubs in Italy. On Tuesday night, the stadium was virtually on fire, a week after the first leg of the Champions League semifinals showdown between Inter and Barca at the Olympic Stadium in Spain, which ended, 3-3. The Spain encounter was a foretaste of what to come in Italy. The match lived up to its billing. From the start to the end, there was no dull moment.

By the 90th minute, the normal regulation time, Barca were leading 3-2. At that stage, the game was as good as won. So, Barca and their supporters as well as others thought. But the Inter boys did not give up and in the third minute of added time, they got the equaliser. The game resumed in extra time and Inter got the winning goal in the first half of extra time to end the breath taking game, 4-3 after about 126 minutes, including added time of extra time, of pulsating soccer.

It was football at its best, the kind of which I do not think has been seen in the history of the Champions League. Inter are now in the finals. Either side could have won as both teams were hungry for victory. When teams play like this, the beautiful game is the better for it. Is that not why people are crazy about soccer?

Italian news outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that  Berardi’s recent performance in Sassuolo’s 5-0 victory over Cittadella has reignited discussions about his potential move to a bigger club, adding Milan’s renewed interest comes at a time when they are facing challenges with their current right-wing options with words rife that Chukwueze has yet to pull his weight  unlike  American  Christian Pulisic.

AC Milan ends derby losing streak with 2-1 win over Inter

AC Milan broke their six-match losing streak in the Derby della Madonnina with a dramatic 2-1 victory over rivals Inter. Goals from Christian Pulisic and a last-minute header by Matteo Gabbia sealed the crucial win, which comes as a major boost to Milan’s Serie A campaign and likely strengthens the position of under-pressure manager Paulo Fonseca.

Coming into the derby, Milan faced significant pressure, having won just once in their last five games, including a 3-1 Champions League loss to Liverpool. Despite injury concerns, Fonseca took a risk by setting up his side in a sturdy 4-4-2 formation, with Tammy Abraham and Álvaro Morata leading the attack.

The match began with both teams trading early chances, but it was Pulisic who broke the deadlock. Taking advantage of an error by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the American midfielder drove forward and finished calmly past Inter’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Inter responded quickly, with Federico Dimarco finishing off a well-coordinated move involving Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez to bring the score level before the half-hour mark. Just before halftime, Inter nearly took the lead, but Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan made a brilliant save to deny Marcus Thuram.

In the second half, both teams pushed for a winner, with Milan briefly awarded a penalty before VAR overturned the decision. With the match appearing headed for a draw, Gabbia rose in the final minutes to head home Tijjani Reijnders’ free-kick, clinching the victory.

This result marks Milan’s first derby win since 2022 and delivers a much-needed morale boost, as they remain competitive in the Serie A title race.

  • Manchester United beat AC Milan on penalties in Cardiff

Manchester United beat AC Milan 5-4 on penalties after their International Champions Cup match in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium ended 2-2 in regulation time on Saturday.

United opened the scoring in their final pre-season match through Marcus Rashford, who took advantage of Milan’s high backline to make a run into space to collect Nemanja Matic’s long ball.

The 21-year-old cut back into the box and dribbled past two defenders before firing a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the bottom corner with the help of a deflection off Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli’s heel.

However, their lead lasted only 12 minutes when Milan’s high press allowed the Italian side to win the ball back in the final third when United tried to play out from the back.

Matic lost possession a few yards outside his own box and the ball eventually fell to midfielder Suso, who took a shot from range to beat a diving David de Gea and made it 1-1.

The former Liverpool player then created the second goal when he whipped in a cross from a short corner, with Samu Castillejo’s header deflected into the net off United centre back Victor Lindelof.

Substitute Jesse Lingard scored the equaliser, when set up by a through ball from Anthony Martial, with a low shot from an acute angle to send the game into a penalty shootout.

  • Serie A: Inter, AC Milan, Roma matches, others live on GOtv

The race for Italy’s final two UEFA Champions League places gets closer to its peak this weekend from Sunday May 18 to Monday, May 20, as Inter Milan, Atalanta, AC Milan and Roma take to the pitch in matches that will be broadcast to GOtv subscribers.

The matches involving the quartet, two of which will eventually experience heartbreak, are scheduled for broadcast exclusively on GOtv Plus and GOtv Max packages.

Inter Milan are well placed to clinch third and final automatic ticket for Europe’s top club competition and will want to solidify their position when they travel to face Napoli.

Last week, the Nerazzurri defeated Chievo Verona to maintain their position. Coach Luciano Spalleti will bank on Mauro Icardi, Ivan Perisic and other stars to deliver the goods.

But Napoli, who have confirmed Champions League qualification, having placed second to champions, Juventus will seek to finish strong in what has turned out to be a disappointing season.

The match will be live on Sunday May 19 at 7:30pm on SuperSport Select 5.

Atalanta have mountain to climb when they travel to Turin to face Serie A champions, Juventus.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men secured a nervy win in their last game against Genoa and must get maximum points to be in control of their destiny. The Bergamo-based club, just hanging onto the final UCL spot by three points, will hope that star striker, Duvan Zapata, the league’s second highest goal scorer this season with 22 goals, can exploit the sudden vulnerability of the Old Lady defence.

Despite overseeing a run of two draws and one defeat since clinching the title, manager Massimiliano Allegri, is expected to field a strong line up for the clash showing tomorrow at 2pm on SuperSport Select 2 and 5.

AC Milan and Roma, both tied on 62 points in fifth and sixth places respectively, will hope to win their games while hoping a slip-up by Atalanta and possibly Inter Milan will enable them to move into Champions League places.

Milan, led by their former star, Gennaro Gattuso, host already-relegated Frosinone, with the encounter showing tomorrow at 5pm on SuperSport Select 5.

Roma face a tricky away encounter against 10th-placed Sassulo (showing today, May 18 at 7:30pm on SuperSport Select 5).

  • AC Milan face potential Champions League ban

AC Milan’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League have been thrown into doubt after they were referred to the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) for allegedly breaching financial fair play (FFP) regulations for a second successive term.

Milan are fourth in Serie A and close to returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2014, but could now face a ban from European competition.

They had claimed their financial situation would improve under the ownership of American hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation, after they assumed control of the club from former owner Li Yonghong last summer.

UEFA initially gave Milan a two-year ban from European competition for breaking FFP rules last summer but they successfully appealed against that sanction with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“The UEFA Club Financial Control Body investigatory chamber has today communicated its decision to refer the case of AC Milan to the CFC adjudicatory chamber as the club has failed to comply with the break-even requirement during the monitoring period assessed in the current season and covering the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons,” a UEFA statement read.

“UEFA will be making no further comments on the matter until a decision has been reached by the CFCB adjudicatory chamber in this case. This referral is not related to the decision that was made by the CFCB adjudicatory in December 2018 and was covering the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.”

Under FFP regulations, clubs are not allowed to make losses of more than £26 million over three seasons, a cap Milan were accused of breaching between 2015-17 when they spent £200m on transfers. However, this referral is in relation to the three-year period between 2016-18.

The Rossoneri, who appointed former Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis as CEO in December, were fined in January following the €35m signing of Paqueta.

“After the signing of Paqueta, a letter arrived from UEFA where we were asked about any similar investments — along with a fine,” sporting director Leonardo said in December.

  • Italian optimism wanes after Portugal loss

The optimism which followed Roberto Mancini’s appointment as Italy coach in May quickly drained away, following their 1-0 loss to Portugal on Monday as thoughts turned to Nations League relegation.

Mancini made nine changes to his starting line-up against the European champions.

He continued his search for the right players to help him rebuild Italy, following their failure to qualify for this year’s World Cup.

But the four-time world champions went down with barely a whimper to a Portugal side, who allowed themselves the luxury of resting Cristiano Ronaldo and Italy’s performance suggested Mancini has a long road ahead.

“Italy always going downwards,” said the Gazzetta dello Sport, summing up the general sentiment which followed the team’s fourth competitive match without a win.

The only players to leave Lisbon with any praise were goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who at 19 appears to be the natural heir to Gianluigi Buffon,

His Milan team mate Alessio Romanogli in defence and forward Simone Zaza.

Italy’s midfield was disjointed and even Federico Chiesa, who lit up their 1-1 draw with Poland on Friday after coming on as a substitute, failed to provide the same spark.

Mancini fielded Bryan Cristante and Jorginho in central midfield with Chiesa and Giacomo Bonaventura on the flanks in a formation,

This occasionally resembled the much-maligned 4-2-4 used by his hapless predecessor Gian Piero Ventura.

Zaza was partnered by Ciro Immobile in a two-man strike force but, not for the first time, Immobile, a prolific scorer for Lazio, was a let-down playing for his country.

With Italy short of world-class players, Mancini insisted the only way forward was to test less experienced players even when they lack playing time at club level.

These included Mattia Caldara who has yet to make his debut for AC Milan following his move from Juventus and played on Monday.

Mancini has complained that Italian players are being squeezed out by foreigners at Serie clubs.

“It is true that we have many young players and we are in an experimental phase; however we must continue on this path and pick ourselves up as soon as possible.

“If a young player doesn’t play at a high level then it’s clear that they’ll struggle in the first few games, however, we knew this before,” he said.

If Italy finish bottom of the three team group, they will be relegated to League B of UEFA’s new competition a price Mancini said they would have to risk paying as he continued to experiment.

“We do not like losing, it’s bad, but it’s also true that we have to take risks and get experience in these games, which emphasised that the priority was to qualify for Euro 2020.

“We knew there were problems in this squad, because otherwise Italy would have qualified for the 2018 World Cup,” said Mancini.

The European Championship qualifying competition, which is separate from the Nations League, starts in March.
