  • Accident victims to get free treatment

Accident victims will now get free treatment in selected hospitals in Lagos within the first 24hours of any accident. This was revealed during the signing of Memorandum Of Understanding by the Health Emergency Initiative, HEI, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi, Lagos, last week.

According to the executive director of HEI, Pascal Achunine, free treatments of not more than twenty thousand naira would be given to car accident victims brought to the selected hospitals by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

“The structure is designed in a way that a typical road accident victim that is picked by LASAMBUS or FRSC and brought to these hospitals will be attended to on the certainty that within 24hours, HEI will pay the bill not exceeding twenty thousand naira.”

Pascal said that the reason behind this initiative is to reduce the rate of loss of life caused by vehicular accidents.

“We recently had a collaborative engagement with federal road safety commission to reduce death arising from not providing immediate support to vehicular accidents victims,” said Pascal.

The theme of the campaign is “None should die.” It is aimed at stabilising critically injured accidents victims in eleven selected hospitals in Lagos, including the Orthopaedic Hospital, LUTH, LASUTH and FMC. On his part, the Medical Director, Dr Olurotimi Odunnubi, welcomed the initiative, saying it will save as many lives as possible.

He added that “ultimately, we know that what would be the final solution is health insurance where every Nigerian will be included in the National Health Insurance Scheme, but the Health Emergency Initiative is only filling the gap”.

  • Remembering road accident victims

    Remembering road accident victims

November 15, 2015 (the third Sunday of November) was the World Day of Remembrance of Road Accident Victims.

Without any iota of doubt, road accidents have claimed millions of lives with several other millions of people maimed physically or psychologically. Many have become widows, widowers, orphans and dependants through the death of their loved ones in road accidents.

As these victims of road accidents are being remembered worldwide, I would like to suggest here that the Nigerian governments (Federal, State and local) should go beyond joining other countries to remember these victims by looking into the possibility of implementing the following at various levels nationwide.

1.Set up a Road Accident Fund

    • To provide medical assistance to road accident victims who can still survive when given adequate and immediate medical attention.
    • To compel hospitals to accept road accident victims for immediate treatment even without Police report and prosecute violators.
    • To provide support to the less- privileged, widows or widowers of road accident victims.
    • To provide education and other necessary support to the orphans produced by road accidents.
    1. Give priority attention to the implementation of the Corporate Manslaughter Act signed into law early this year (2015) as a way of ensuring adequate training and re – training of drivers by driving schools and total compliance to the duty of care by the employers of drivers and drivers of self–own vehicles.
    2. Set up a Road Traffic Court where surviving drivers of road accidents and other traffic law violators can be tried and prosecuted appropriately. This will ensure quick justice and promote safe driving on Nigeria’s roads.
    3. The governments and other Road Safety Stakeholders must get more committed and actively mark the World Day of Remembrance of Road Accident victims which is globally slated for the third Sunday of November of every year. The well pronounced marking of the day will also go a long way to increase safety–consciousness and further enhance safety on Nigeria roads.
    4. All officers of Federal and State government Traffic Management Agencies must wholeheartedly work with diligence and incorruptible hands to avoid loss of lives and valuable properties on Nigeria roads. The eyes of the Almighty God is watching all of us, His creatures and will reward us all according to our deliberate actions and inactions here on earth.

IGP urges doctors, others to assist accident, gunshot victims

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has urged medical personnel and members of the public to attend to accident victims and persons with gunshot injuries.

He however noted that the police should be informed for necessary action after attending to them.

He explained that the call is necessary due to neglects and untimely death of victims following fear of being implicated without Police involvement.

The Police High Command also ordered its Officers not to harass good Samaritans in this regard, but endeavour to elicit correct facts in relation to incident from them.

This is contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Force Spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu.

The statement read: “Doctors on duty are equally duty bound to treat victims of gunshot wounds and further inform Police of relevant facts. The safety of Nigerians is a collaborative effort of all and sundry.

“Police therefore, enjoin citizens not to relent in their cooperative attitude in ensuring safety of all. While they are also to report any suspicious person or persons to the nearest Police Station.”
