  • Sokoto PDP accuses Wamakko, APC of destroying its office, property

THE Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday accused former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko and some people, said to be suspected thugs working for the All Progressives Congress (APC), of attacking its presidential candidate’s campaign office in the state.

The PDP also said suspected APC thugs allegedly attacked the property of other party members in the state capital on Sunday night.

But the APC, through its State Chairman, Alhaji Sadeeq Isah Achida, denied the allegation.

The chairman said the party was not aware of such incident.

He said: “It was between the Attahiru Bafarawa and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal factions of the PDP.”

The ruling PDP in the state condemned what it called the “unwarranted” attack on its members by suspected thugs of the APC.

Addressing reporters at Dogon Daji House on Maiduguri Road in Sokoto, PDP’s State Chairman Ibrahim Milgoma said suspected APC thugs destroyed car windscreens, glasses and window glasses at the party’s campaign office for Atiku.

He said: “The attacks were carried out at three locations, including Atiku Abubakar campaign headquarters on Kano Road, Sokoto Cinema home of Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu and the home of Sarkin Alhazai at Gobirawa, Sokoto.

“Unprovoked thugs caused mayhem, destruction of the property of innocent passers-by with weapons under the watch of the senator.

“A similar attack was also carried out by the opposition members at the popular ‘Welcome to China’ mobile phone and accessories sales complex at Gobirawa area in Sokoto where over items valued at over N500,000 were stolen.”

Also, the party’s chairman said seven vehicles were affected at Maigwandu’s home.

Milgoma said: “It happened when Senator Wamakko paid a condolence visit to the area by foot and APC thugs destroyed the vehicles.”

The chairman, who said the PDP had reported the matter to the police command, urged members and supporters to remain law-abiding.

He said: “We shall continue to be law-abiding citizens. As a party, we will remain peaceful and orderly while we call on security agencies, especially the police, to investigate and deal appropriately with the matter by ensuring that the perpetrators of the dastardly acts are brought to justice.

“The APC and Senator Wamakko should endeavour to endear themselves to the good people of Sokoto State through humane and civilised manner rather than resort to desperate tactics that threaten the lives and property of the citizens.”

But Achida, who also addressed reporters at the Diplomat Area state secretariat of the APC, said the attack “was between the new and old PDP factions”.

He added: “They seized the opportunity of Wamakko’s presence in the area to cause problem in order to tarnish his political and personal image as well his long-standing reputation in the eyes of the good people of Sokoto state.”

Police spokesperson Cordelia Nwawe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the command was investigating the matter.

“All these are allegations. The police commissioner is on top of the matter to ensure that the right thing is done. The command is resolute at ensuring peaceful political process and activities in the state,” she said.

Nwawe recalled that the command had reiterated its commitment to ensuring a level-playing field for all parties and political activities.

The spokesperson warned political parties and politicians to play the game by its rules and within the ambit of the law.

She added: “We had an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting with various political parties recently and had their commitment to ensure peaceful and lawful political activities before, during and after the (2019) elections. We expect nothing less.”

  • Offa bank robbery: Kwara accuses police of blackmail

Kwara State government said yesterday that the Police was being economical with the truth as regard the April robbery suspects in Offa.

The police had reportedly blamed attorney-general and commissioner for Justice for delaying arraignment of the suspects.

They said they had concluded investigations and sent the case file to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who directed that the file be sent to the state attorney-general.

Reacting to the police statement in Ilorin, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) described the police utterances as ‘cheap blackmail.’

Said he: “I see this as a cheap blackmail by the police. They have something to hide, which they are yet to tell Nigerians. I am sure at the end of the day, Nigerians will know what has transpired in this matter. That is why the police are passing the buck. They can now see that Nigerians have started asking questions that if you’ve arrested suspects since April and they are yet to be arraigned, then there must be something about it. I urge people to ask questions about this matter.

“I am surprised, particularly the statement coming from the police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood. Moshood, without being personal, is from Ilorin. He has contacts and I am sure he follows events in the Kwara Command. He knows that the suspects are still with him at the police headquarters.

“Why will he now mislead the public that we are yet to prosecute? How can you prosecute people kept in Abuja in Kwara State High Court? It is not possible.”

The attorney-general added: “I want to confirm to you that a letter was written from the Office of the Director of the Public Prosecution of the Federation under the Office of the Attorney-General of them Federation. My office received the letter on August 27.

“The content of the letter had to do with the investigation report on the Offa robbery and directing my office to take up the prosecution of the matter.

“Immediately we received this letter on September 6, we wrote a letter through the Office of the State Director of the Public Prosecution to the Office of the Attorney-General requesting them to provide for us the original case diary in the Offa robbery and to transfer the suspects to Kwara State Police Command. We waited for about three weeks and did not hear anything from them.

“I then met the AIG Legal, David Ogbodo and requested that the original case diary be sent to Kwara to enable us start prosecution of the matter. I also requested him to send the suspects to Kwara State and he told me that he had directed the man in charge. That is Abba Kyari.

“We waited for another week, we could not get anything from them. So, I directed my DPP to liaise with the police this time. He liaised with the police both in the state and with Abbah Kyari. They promised everyday that they would send the suspects to Kwara and the original case diary, to no avail.

“You cannot prosecute under the law without having the original case diary. You cannot even file a charge without the case diary and in filing a charge, you have to exhibit what we call proof of evidence.

“This proof of evidence entails the statements of witnesses. Statements of witnesses in this sense, we are talking of the people that investigated Offa robbers. We don’t have all these with us. We don’t have the suspects on ground, we don’t have the witnesses on ground.

“How do you file a charge? How do you prosecute people you cannot see?”

  • APC accuses Akwa Ibom govt of smear campaign against Ekere

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State has raised the alarm over smear campaigns against its governorship candidate, Nsima Ekere, by the Governor Udom Emmanuel administration.

Spokesman to Governor Emmanuel, Ekerete Udoh, dismissed the claim.

Udoh said: “This is another desperate attempt by APC in Akwa Ibom State to cover their nefarious activities. Nigerians and Akwa Ibomites are living witnesses to the perpetual mudsling that these leftists have hauled at the government and people of Akwa Ibom State in the last three years. However, the government of Akwa Ibom State  is more focused on sustainable development and not interested in engaging in a mudsling game.”

This is coming a few days after Ekere allegedly escaped assassination attempt in which a bullet was shot at his house while he was having a meeting at the home of the Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Authority (OGFTZA), Umana Umana.

According to a statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Nkereuwem Enyongekere, there have been a series of secret meetings by top officials at the Government House to plot against Ekere.

In the statement, the party’s spokesman alleged that the government had a four-pronged approach to discredit its governorship candidate.

“The well-funded and desperate plot is to be carried out in the print and social media. The plot is four-pronged.

‘’One of the strategies is to deceive Akwa Ibom people  that Obong Ekere has entered into a secret pact with Senator Godswill Akpabio to serve two terms in office as governor contrary to his promise.

“To deceive Akwa Ibom people that 70 per cent of appointments in Obong Ekere’s government will be done by Senator Akpabio.

“To deceive Akwa Ibom people that the biggest contracts in Obong Ekere’s government will be reserved for Igbo businessmen.

“To deceive Akwa Ibom people that Obong Ekere will soon put up NDDC billboards in Akwa Ibom, claiming Akwa Ibom State Government projects”, the statement said.

“The APC members urge the public to discountenance such false publications, which, it said are planned to hit the print and social media in the state from Tuesday, October 9, 2018.”

  • Governorship primary: Ogun APC accuses NWC of ‘frustrating treatment’

The Ogun chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday complained about the “frustrating and unsatisfactory treatment” meted out to it by the National Working Committee (NWC) over the governorship primaries.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Taiwo Adeoluwa expressed the position at a news conference in Abeokuta.

Adeoluwa who described himself as a stakeholder said he addressed the conference on behalf of the party and all the good people of the state.

The SSG recalled how the party in the state had once adopted the direct mode of primaries and later changed to indirect mode because of non-availability of essential materials, such as an updated membership register and membership cards necessary for the direct mode.

He said the state chapter later reversed its decision and embraced  the direct mode in conformity with the directive of the NWC of the party.

Adeoluwa noted that the NWC had continued to postpone the exercise which was originally scheduled for Saturday for the third time without official notice to the state party secretariat.

“For the third day running, the NWC has been rescheduling the governorship primaries and we have only been hearing this from the camp of one of the aspirants.

” On each occasion, we have mobilised our people, deployed facilities and arranged necessary logistics costing huge funds, time and energy to ensure a successful primary.

“Today, we have even shut down public primary and secondary schools when we thought  it would finally hold since the Election Committee from Abuja arrived in Abeokuta on Monday.”

  • Afenifere accuses Buhari, APC of shunning restructuring

The Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, yesterday said President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement on national interest being above personal liberty is disappointing.

In a communique issued at the end of its monthly meeting at the home of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Afenifere accused the President and the ruling Al Progressives Congress (APC) of not believing in the restructuring of Nigeria.

The group’s Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, who read the communique, said: “We maintain that restructuring remains the major issue in Nigeria. The meeting reviewed the comments by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, at a town hall meeting in the Unites States of America (U.S.A).

Osinbajo was quoted as saying: “The problem of our country is not the matter of restructuring and we must not allow ourselves to be drawn into the argument that our problem is drawn from geographical de-structuring. It is about managing resources properly and providing for people properly.”

Afenifere said: “The statement of the Vice President should be viewed against the background that in 2016, the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party inserted restructuring into its manifestos and, in 2017, when the argument about restructuring became so loud, they set up the El-Rufai Committee to provide their own idea of restructuring. Up till now, they have not told us their new definition, only for them to tell us that restructuring is not our problem.

“…There is no amount of good governance that can alter the derivation formula. Good governance cannot address resource control. There are issues of restructuring that are outside the scope of good governance, which is an essential ingredient of restructuring…”

  • Oyetola accuses Omisore of clandestine meetings with Peace Corps cadets

The Gboyega Oyetola Campaign Organisation has accused  the governorship  candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore, of holding “clandestine meetings” with Peace Corps cadets in Osun State.

The group said Omisore held meetings with the cadets at Ife-Oluwa Gramnar School in Osogbo, the state capital.

In a statement, the campaign organisation alleged that Omisore’s motive was to deceive the members of the Peace Corps to thwart the goodwill and popular desire of the generality of indigenes of Osun State to elect a candidate of their choice in the September 22 governorship poll.

“At one of such gatherings last Saturday, where plots were hatched to foist mayhem during campaigns of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the residents of the area swooped on them and chased them away from the school at the point of sharing some cash.

“The Gboyega Oyetola Campaign Organisation hereby draws urgent attention of the security agencies, particularly Nigeria Police (NP) and Department of State Services (DSS) to conduct a check on operations of the unregistered paramilitary organisations, particularly the Peace Corps to achieve a hitch-free election on September 22.

“We equally wishe to draw attention of members of the public to slight similarities between the color of the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) and the so-called Peace Corps.  We are assure that efforts would be made before long to distinguish the corps from our formidable OYES innovation for the people not to get mistake one for another,” the group submitted.

In a reaction, the SDP said  Oyetola was afraid of losing the election.

In a statement, the spokesperson for the party, Taiwo Akeju, said: “They  are just making noises. They are panicking because of the fear of losing the election, they have destroyed the grassroots. We in the SDP believe in the electorate to vote for us. They are afraid because of their failure in government for the past eight years.

“We are not bothered about them. On our part, we are mobilising the people for the success of the SDP in the governorship election. SDP is the first political party today in Osun State. Our rising profile in Osun is giving the APC and their candidate, Gboyega Oyetola serious headache because our profile has risen so much. Members of the peace corps have the rights to vote for any candidate they like. They are citizens of Nigeria and they are indigenes of Osun State.

  • Amnesty accuses security forces of ‘widespread abuses’

Amnesty accuses security forces of ‘widespread abuses’

Amnesty International has in its fresh report released yesterday accused security forces of carrying out last year widespread human rights abuses such as extra-judicial killings, arbitrary arrests, mass detention in sub-human facilities, attacks on the media and journalists among others.

The 2017/2018 Human Rights report condemned the military for its alleged disregard for human rights in its execution of the war against Boko Haram.

But the Defence Headquarters last night said it was studying the report.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen John Agim, who spoke with The Nation on telephone, said: “We have just received the report and we are studying it. Right now, I am at the airport in Lagos. Whatever will be our response to the report we will communicate it to you. Thank you.”

According to Amnesty, in the outgoing year, the Army carried out “extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, and torture and other ill-treatment, which, in some cases, led to deaths in custody”.

The human right organisation noted that the condition of the military detention facilities in the Northeast and other parts of the country was harsh, and children were detained unlawfully alongside their parents in the centres.

“Detainees were denied access to lawyers and family members. The army released 593 detainees in April and 760 in October. By April, the military detention facility at Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, held more than 4,900 people in extremely over-crowded cells,” the report said.

Similarly, the report also alleged that soldiers killed 10 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Umuahia and injured 12 others on September 14, 2017.

The police and the State Security Services (SSS), were not spared in the report. The report accused them of torture, ill-treatment and unlawful detention of civilians.

  • CAN accuses Buhari of failing to protect Nigerians

CAN accuses Buhari of failing to protect Nigerians

    •‘President hasn’t violated constitution’

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday accused President Muhammadu Buhari of failing to protect Nigerians as enshrined in the constitution.

Reacting to the Benue killings and insecurity in the country at a news conference in Abuja, its

General Secretary Rev Musa Asake said: “President Buhari was elected on a wave of unprecedented public approval in 2015. Unfortunately, within a few weeks of his election, he started creating the impression that he was in power to serve the interests of his Fulani ethnic group only. Discerning people were quick to note that contrary to his electoral promises, he actually meant to pursue core Islamist agenda. Almost every vital appointment in Security and Education went to Muslims from the North. He did not hide his disdain for the indigenous ethnic nationalities and, at every opportunity, showed preferential treatment to the Muslim North.”

But the Presidency discountenanced the claim that the President violated the constitution.

Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu in a statement said “Our attention has been drawn to reports of a press conference by General Secretary of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Dr. Musa Asake in which he passed a judgement on the constitutionality of certain actions of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“Unfortunately, he could not cite any valid cases of constitutional violations. President Muhammadu government poses no threat to the country’s democracy and Constitution.

“There are no cases of any violation of our sacred constitution and there will be none under this President.

The respected religious leader should stick to his religious duties and leave politics for politicians.”

Asake said the government had not been able to come up with an efficient and enduring system that could overwhelm the resurgence of Boko Haram, gunmen and Fulani herdsmen “who are prowling villages, shooting and killing innocent Christians. Instead the IG whenever there is killings going on his men on ground in that particular area will be looking the other way and if asked they will say they are waiting for order from above. The IG will always take sides and make statements that are provocative to the people of the affected area.”

CAN alleges that “Under President Buhari, the murderous Fulani herdsmen enjoyed unprecedented protection and favoritism to the extent that the herdsmen treat Nigeria as a conquered territory. Rather than arrest and prosecute the Fulani herdsmen, security forces usually manned by Muslims from the North offer them protection as they unleash terror with impunity on the Nigerian people. It is clear to the discerning that President Buhari is not running Nigeria according to the dictates of the Democratic values in the Constitution and has no respect for Human Rights, Rule of Law and Democracy. It is unfortunate that a President that was sworn into office to uphold and defend the Constitution has flagrantly violated the Constitution and adopted Sharia ideology as operational standard.

  • Magu accuses public officers of engaging in ‘conflict of interest’

ACTING Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu is worried that public servants are weighed down by conflict of interests arising from resisting corruption and actually engaging in corrupt acts.

Magu made the allegation while delivering a lecture organized by finance correspondents in Abuja yesterday.

Magu, who said the commission had recovered over N409 billion from treasury looters, lamented that Nigeria is bleeding under the weight of corruption “because the average public office holder is bogged down in conflict of interests”.

He said: “Now, the public office holder is more interested in advancing personal interest rather than the public interest, which he is charged to discharge.”

The EFCC boss, who was represented by Head of Public Interface unit of the EFCC Tony Orilade, noted that “in the thinking of the morally bankrupt person, the public office confers on him or her rare opportunity of a life time. So, his or her action is informed by pecuniary motives.”

Magu maintained that his commission was determined to fight corruption to a standstill in Nigeria, but sadly, “it is fighting back, really hard. In the history of the EFCC’s 14 years of spearheading the fight against corruption, the fightback has never been this savage.”
