  • Niger: ACD candidate loses life in auto accident

    The Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) candidate for Kontagora II Constituency for the House of Assembly election in Niger state, Alhaji Adamu Musa Usubu has been crushed to death in an auto accident.

    He died on his way from a meeting on Friday evening when the motorcycle he boarded ran into a wheel barrow in Kontagora town.

    The death has been confirmed by the younger brother to the deceased, Mallam Abubakar Musa.

    He said that his brother had to board a commercial motorcycle because his vehicle developed fault and he was in a hurry to attend to some of his guests waiting for him at home.

    According to the deceased brother, his brother’s death was cause when a vehicle behind crushed him to death after he fell from the vehicle.

    Confirming the death, the INEC Deputy Public Relations Officer in Niger state, Mallam Ibrahim Abari said it was difficult for the Commission to do anything on the matter because the information came late.

    “There is hardly anything the Commission can do in the circumstance especially as the information came rather late.”

  • ACD elects woman as Anambra governorship candidate

    The Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) in a ‘yes’ vote yesterday elected a woman, Lolo Oby Kate Okafor, as its candidate for the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

    Ms Okafor was declared winner at the party’s secretariat in Awka, the state capital, by the National Youth Leader, who also chaired the party’s primary team, Mr. Sam George Okpara.

    She becomes the first woman governorship candidate among the political parties ahead of the election.

    In her acceptance speech yesterday, Mrs Okafor said it was time for a woman to rule the state since, according to her, the men had failed the people.

    She pledged not to disappoint the state, if elected governor.

    The ACD candidate thanked the party for trust her.

    The party’s primary had a heavy security presence as well as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    Ms Okafor said her priority would be to improve education and security.

    Okpara hailed security agencies and INEC for their patience.

    Anambra 2017: ACD produces female flag bearer

    The Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) on Tuesday, nominated Mrs Oby Okafor as its candidate for the November 18 governorship election in Anambra.

    Okafor emerged from a unanimous decision of 63 delegates of the party at its primary election in Awka.

    She is the first woman to get a party’s nomination for the election.

    Chairman of Governorship Primary Election Committee of ACD, Mr George Okparah, who announced the emergence of Okafor, said she met the party’s conditions and conformed to the guidelines.

    Okparah expressed confidence that ACD, with a female candidate, had the best material for the governorship of the state.

    In her acceptance speech, Okafor thanked members of the party for believing in her ability to fly their flag in the governorship race.

    She said it was time women were given the opportunity to serve in highest political office in the land.

    Okafor, who is the Chairman of ACD in Anambra, said that the state would be better under her leadership if elected.

    “I am happy to have been nominated by our party; we can now go into this election very prepared.

    “It is time women are given the mantle of leadership because some men have failed us in politics, so they should give women a chance,” she said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

  • 15 parties back restructuring

    At least 15 political parties on the platform of the Coalition for New Nigeria (CNN) have expressed support for the restructuring of the country.

    CNN’s National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, who disclosed this on Monday in Abuja, said the coalition was determined to chart a new course for the country.

    According to him, CNN is committed to the unity, indivisibility and progress of Nigeria.

    He said the vision of the coalition was a new Nigeria that would be secure and prosperous through effective governance.

    Abdulsalam said: “Our goal will be to create jobs for all those who want to work and economic opportunity for all to achieve.

    “Our immediate task will be to strive to heal the wounds of the past through reclamation, reconciliation and reformation.

    “We are committed to the economic, political and internal restructuring of Nigeria as well as empowering of our youths, women and persons with disability through well-articulated policies toward a better Nigeria.”

    He said CNN would engage in a holistic fight against corruption with the sole aim of abolishing hunger and poverty.

    The CNN national chairman said the coalition looks forward to a government that would undertake economic renovation and reforms capable of transforming the country into a leading industrial giant.

    The 15 political parties in the coalition are – Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), National Action Council (NAC), Democratic People’s Congress (DPC), Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), People for Democratic Change (PDC) and Democratic Alternative (DA).

    Others are – Better Nigeria Progressive Party (BNPP), Action Alliance (AA), United Democratic Party (UDP), Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), Young Democratic Party (YDP) and Mega Progressive Peoples Party (MPPP).
