  • Why our campus is peaceful, by ACE Provost

The Provost, Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo, Prof Olukoya Ogen, has given reasons why peace has continued to prevail in the institution.

According to him, there is mutual relationship among the management, workers and students – a situation he said was not the case in many tertiary institutions.

He said his management is fully committed to the welfare of all students in the College.

Ogen, who spoke during the inauguration of the 2016/2017 Students’ Union (SU) Central Executive Council, pledged management’s commitment in operating an open door policy.

“We will carry your executive along on any issues.  We want your ideas, let us rub minds together,” said Ogen, while addressing the students’ body.

Ogen, who described the occasion as significant, also praised the SU for guiding their colleagues to achieve smooth transition from one executive to another.

He hailed the outgoing SU President, Richard Ogunrotifa for outstanding performance during his tenure. Ogen said management had recommended Ogunrotifa for a special commendation for creating a bond with the legislature, executive and Judiciary arms of the SU, and for his boldness in presenting a statement of account after his tenure.

Ogen urged the new president, Omosebi Oluwatobilola, to emulate his predecessor’s values, while also adopting Dr. Folorunso Balogun who is the Dean, School of Science as his father throughout his tenure.

The Dean, Students Affairs, Mr. Olaniyi Olaluwoye, recalled that the second SU e-voting election took place on August 23, adding that it was very peaceful.

He appealed to the newly elected SU to see their offices as a call to service, and not as an opportunity to enrich themselves.

The Chairman, Senior Staff Union of College of Education in Nigeria, Mr. Jimoh Liasu and the Chairman, Non Academic Staff Union, Henry Akingbola also were also in attendance.

The high point of the event was the presentation by Ogen of a certificate and a new SU bus to the outgoing executives.

  • ACE gets SUG

Students’ Union of the Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo, has elected a new leadership to run the affairs for the 2016/2017 academic session. Omosebi Oluwatobilola, who emerged president of SU, replaced Ogunrotifa Richard whose tenure ended recently.

He polled the highest votes in a keenly contested election, organised by the college thrAough e-voting method, supervised by the Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC).

Besides,120 students were also elected into the students’ representative council (SRC), which is the SU legislative arm. The students are also to represent the various courses with the halls of residence such as: Olunloyo, Oduduwa, Café, Wande and Tinubu, Abiodun, Kiladejo and Education Trust Fund (ETF) halls respectively.

The Dean, Students Affair (DSA), Olaniyi Olaluwoye praised SIEC members for peaceful conduct of the election and students for exhibiting maturity.

He described the feat as another landmark recorded by the Prof. Joseph Ogen-led administration in the sustenance and entrenchment of democratic legacy in the institution.

Olaluwoye noted that students’ participation in the exercise more than what was observed last year, through the use of cellphones, laptops and physical presence, gave validity to the global acceptability of e-voting method.

Workers complied with directives of their national bodies to proceed on strike over the refusal of the Federal Government, to abide with the 2009/2010 agreement purportedly signed with them.

Similarly, the leadership of COEASU, SSUCOEN and NASU, has directed their members to resume immediately at their various places of work following the suspension of the strike.

When The Nation visited the 50-year-old college, excited students were seen in large numbers. Some of them were cleaning while others gathered in groups discussing the resumption.

Also, a worker who spoke in confidence described the development as a good omen.

The source appealed to the Federal Government to honour the agreement reached with the workers, which prompted the latter to suspend the strike.

He prayed the Federal government see the good qualities in him and tap from his experience and wisdom for the advancement of education in Nigeria.

Similarly, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mr. F.E. Aderinboye, also described the Provost as a dynamic, progressive, amiable man, encourager as well as human developer. Also, the college Liberian, Dr R.A. Egunjobi could not hide his feelings. He referred to the Provost as a father and a pacesetter without any reservation and also believed that Professor Idowu will change the landscape of education in Nigeria if he is opportuned to serve at a higher capacity. • Ondo Govt may shut down FUTA, ACE over tax evasion

Ondo Govt may shut down FUTA, ACE over tax evasion

The Ondo State Government may soon shut down the two federal tertiary institutions located in the state, the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) and Adeyemi College of Education (ACE), Ondo over alleged evasion of taxes.

Already, the state government has directed the Internal Revenue Board to place notice of non-compliance on the gate of the institutions.

According to the Internal Revenue Board, FUTA was alleged to be owing about N2.7billion, while Adeyemi College also owes the government N346million.

When The Nation visited ACE, lecturers and some passers-by besieged the school gate having glimpse of the notice.

The notice placed on the institution’s gates reads, “take notice that the owner/operators the company/business premises have failed to comply with their tax obligation under the relevant federal and state laws. Any officer or agent involved in this contravention is punishable by fine and/ or imprisonment under section of the personal income tax act 1993 as amended by order of the Ondo State Board of Internal Revenue (OSBIR)”.

A lecturers of ACE, who spoke under anonymity lamented over the recent increase of tax by the state government.

He wondered why such huge amount of money will be placed on the institution.

His words: “Thank God, the COEASU is on strike and presently our students are not around because by now they may be planning to stage a protest against the government action and you always know the result of students’ unrest.”

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of ACE, Mr. Moses Akinfolarin, when contacted on phone said he could not speak on the matter but referred our correspondent to the Registrar and Provost of the school for comments on the matter.

However, a senior staff in the Bursary  Department who craved anonymity said the amount claimed by the government to have owed by the school was too outrageous, insisting that the institution had not been evading tax as alleged by the state government.

He said : the said money is too outrageous and the college has been paying but the argument is that the college has not been paying right amount of money , but if the government alleged the college of not paying, on what basis, how do they calculate it to arrive at that money they brought,”

“As far as I know ACE has never defaulted, if you check through all higher institution in the south west you will discover that we are the one paying the highest amount of  tax, so if the government could come with N347million, they should be able to tell us how they arrived at that amount.”

In the case of FUTA, the Spokesman of the institution, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo when contacted on telephone claimed to be oblivious of the development but promised to meet the school’s Bursar as at the press time.

“I am not aware of the matter but I will contact the school’s Bursar about it, I will get back to you, “he said.

10 varsities get $80m World Bank’s grant for research

Ten Nigerian universities have won about $8 million grant each for research and related activities under the World Bank-supported Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE) project.

The universities are among the 15 from West and Central African sub-region whose proposals were successful in the final selection at the ACE Project Steering Committee meeting in Dakar, Senegal on October 28, last year.

A team of World Bank and representatives of the benefiting institutions, led by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, spoke on the grant in Abuja when they visited the Supervising Minister for Education, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Monday.

The benefiting universities are: Redeemers University, Mowe, Ogun State; University of Ibadan’s (UI’s) African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, African University of Science and Technology, Pan African Materials Institute; Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta’s Centre for Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment; Ahmadu Bello University’s (ABU’s) Centre of Excellence on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology and University of Jos’ Phyto-Medicine Research and Development.

Wike said the transformation in the Education sector was yielding good results.

The minister noted that with Nigeria getting out of the 18 centres of excellence in Africa, the country was doing well.

He said: “Why then are they saying Nigerian universities are not doing well?”

Wike stressed that it was commendable that 10 Nigerian universities would get $8 million (about N12 billion) for research.

The minister urged the benefiting institutions to demonstrate high commitment to the successful use of the grants, adding that the grants confirmed the quality of their proposals.

He hailed the World Bank for supporting the development of the Education sector and assured that the Federal Government was committed to the success of the project.

World Bank’s Team Leader Andres Bloom said the body was ready to partner the government on the development of the Education sector.

He hailed level of commitment of officials to the project.

Prof Okojie said the NUC, in the last five years, focused on building of capacities to come up with the researches to solve problems.

The NUC chief said the result could be seen in the number of the institutions that got the grants.

He said the commission would continue to provide the leadership and support the success of the ACE project.
