Woman kills husband in acid attack

A housewife and mother of four, Mrs Augustina Ihugba, is on the run after allegedly bathing her husband, Raymond Ihugba, with raw acid that caused his death.

The woman’s action has thrown Akwakwuma community   in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State into mourning.

A source close to the family, who spoke in confidence, said the woman accused her 50-year-old husband of adultery.

Ihugba was said to have denied the allegation, yet his wife attacked him with acid at a building site where he was working as a mason.

The remains of the victim have been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, the state capital, pending police investigation.

The mother of the victim, Eunice Ihugba, who tearfully recounted the incident, said trouble started between her son and his wife when the latter began to make financial demands from her son, despite his lean resources.

The widow, who lost her husband during the Nigerian/Biafran Civil War, said her son’s persistent pleas to his wife to bear with him proved fruitless.

She said her daughter-in-law trailed her husband to Ubommiri community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area to attack him.

Madam Ihugba said Augustina rushed at him, poured the acid on him and fled.

She added that the victim’s painful cry attracted passers-by who took him to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, where he died.

Also, effort to reach police spokesman Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), at the time of this report was futile.

    •’DPP’s report’ clears suspect’s wife

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court yesterday extended the remand order against a couple Mr and Mrs Chidi Ubochiajonjo  charged with pouring acid on a woman, Ogochukwu Nwosu.

Magistrate J. O. Adepoju remanded the defendants for another 30 days pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Chidi, 39, and his wife Nkiru, 40, were arraigned last March 15, on four counts of conspiracy, attempted murder, threat to kill and causing grievous bodily harm.

According to the charge marked O/18/2017, the defendants, last October 6 at Ilasamaja Bus Stop, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos attempted to murder Nwosu, 26, “by bathing her with substances suspected to be acid” thereby causing her grievous bodily harm.

Nkiru was also accused of sending a text message last October 7, threatening to kill Nwosu.

According to prosecuting counsel Ochogwu Ogbeh, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), the alleged offences contravene Sections 230, 232, 245 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

They were remanded in prison custody pending the DPP’s advice.

At the resumption of proceedings yesterday, Magistrate Adepoju said the advice on the case forwarded to her office from the DPP contained a different case number from what is on the charge.

She directed the prosecutor to ask the DPP for another report bearing the correct charge number.

According to the DPP’S report of May 30, 2017 signed by Mr Y. G. Oshoala, seen by The Nation, there is insufficient evidence for the charge against Nkiru.

“The Office shall not be prosecuting Nkiru Ubochiajonjo as there is no sufficient evidence in the duplicate case file tying her to the crime,” the report stated.

It, however, noted that “there are sufficient facts to establish a prima facie case” to prosecute Chidi.

Defence counsel C. C. Echemazu moved an application for the defendants to be released on bail.

He stated, among others, that the defendants had been in detention since their arraignment and for a cumulative period of almost six months since their arrest.

This was opposed by Ogbeh, who argued, among others, that “the victim of the offence is still critically ill, battling for her life in hospital.”

Ogbeh said after the attack, Nwosu, who worked at Computer Village in Ikeja, sustained serious burns on her face, neck, breasts, among other parts of her body.

Magistrate Adepoju adjourned till July 14 for ruling on the application and DPP’s advice.

  • Pakistani woman held for acid attack on man

A woman in Pakistan, who allegedly attacked a man with acid for refusing to marry her after a four-year relationship has been held, police said on Friday.

The police said that the woman, identified as Momel and in her early 30s, was arrested on Thursday for throwing acid at her lover in the Makhdoom Rashid area of the central city of Multan.

“Initial inquiries showed that Sadaqat Ali, 27, had promised to marry Momel but was eager to carry on the clandestine relationship without tying the knot,’’ local police official, Tasawar Aslam, said.

He said that the woman argued that she was attacked and acted in self-defence.

“It is a serious case and an inspector-level police officer is probing it,” Aslam said.

The victim of the attack was recovering in Multan’s Nishtar Hospital and his life was not in danger, hospital official, Tariq Saeed, said.

The victim and the accused were each married to different people.

Acid throwing is not uncommon in crimes of passion committed in Pakistan, but women are usually the victims.

  • Two held for acid attack on Nigerian

Two held for acid attack on Nigerian

Detectives investigating the acid attack on Victoria’s Secret shop assistant Naomi Oni (who is a Nigerian) have arrested two of her friends, it emerged yesterday.

It came after the probe had started to focus on whether Miss Oni lied about the incident – triggering angry denials from the 21-year-old.

But yesterday police said they had arrested a separate 21-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man who are known to the victim.

Miss Oni was targeted by a woman wearing an Islamic veil as she returned home from her job at the lingerie store.

She spent almost a month in a specialist burns unit while doctors fought to save her sight and carried out skin grafts to repair the scarring to her face inflicted in the early hours of December 30 last year.

The acid had burned her face, arm, hand and leg and left her temporarily blinded. Reports over the weekend suggested detectives investigating the crime believed Miss Oni may have been somehow responsible for her own injuries.

Police also seized her laptop and claims emerged that she had looked at websites detailing acid attacks before the incident.

Sheila Maclean, who is a friend of Miss Oni, said her family was considering making an official complaint to police.

Miss Oni said: ‘I’ve only just come out of hospital after having surgery to my eye. To see this story saying that I’d done it made me so angry and really hurts.

“There’s no way I would have done this to myself. I want the person who did this to be caught.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman stressed Miss Oni had not been arrested.

He added: “On Friday, 22 February, a 21-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of being involved in causing grievous bodily harm.

“On Sunday, 24 February, a 28-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of being involved in causing grievous bodily. Both have been bailed to return, pending further inquiries.”

Miss Oni has told of how she became aware of someone behind her as she walked home after getting off a bus in Dagenham, Essex, shortly after midnight.

She was sprayed in the face with burning liquid while she was speaking on her mobile phone to her boyfriend Ato Owede, who is a 24-year-old law student.

She said: “I felt a presence behind me a few minutes away from home so I turned around, not really expecting to see anybody.

“But I saw a person wearing a niqab, a little taller than me. They were just staring coldly at me. I was startled so I turned away. Suddenly, from nowhere, I felt a splash on my right side and I just ran.

“Before I even realised, it was burning, I somehow knew it was acid.”

Miss Oni was too afraid to return to her home after she was released from hospital and is staying with relatives.

The attack has left Miss Oni, who works at the Westfield Shopping Centre, in Stratford, East London, with psychological as well as physical scars, a friend said. ‘I had seen a picture of her face but when I saw her in the flesh she looked a lot worse,’ he added.

“She didn’t speak to me about the attack. I’ve noticed a bit of a change in her, she is more aware now, she is cautious about who she talks to.

“She is a bit more cautious around strangers.”

Scotland Yard yesterday repeated its appeal for witnesses to the acid attack.

Officers are asking anyone else who may have seen the victim in Lodge Avenue or seen anything suspicious around the time of the attack to call Barking & Dagenham CID.
