  • ‘Why we tortured our victims with pepper, acid’

Suspected robbers who tortured their victims with grinded pepper and acid have been smashed by the operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

The three suspects are: John Odeh, 46; Benjamin Odakpe, 43, and Ebelebe Ajiriogene, 32.

Four other members of the seven-man gang including the kingpin, identified as Ebony escaped with guns, bottles of acid and pepper used during operations.

According to IRT sources, one of the gang’s victims reported his ordeal to the squad.

It was learnt that IRT’s commander, Abba Kyari, ordered the squad’s South West Coordinator, Philip Rinwanine, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to fish out the hoodlums.

The arrest of a member of the gang identified as Ebelebe Ajiriogene led to the arrest of John and Benjamin.

According to IRT sources, the victim, Abiodun Akinnibosun, a banker, on October 11, 2017 boarded a commercial us at Charly Boy area of Gbagada,  en route Obalende, but the driver diverted to Magodo road.

On discovering other passengers to be members of the gang, Abiodun was held down by the hoodlums and asked to keep quiet.

One of the robbers then threatened to spray Abiodun with pepper and acid, asking him to maintain perfect silence.

The hoodlums robbed Abiodun of a Gionee android phone worth N100,000, ATM card and wrist watch valued N25,000.

The robbers led Abiodun to an ATM machine on Ikosi-Ketu road , where he was forced to release his correct ATM access number, following which the robbers withdrew  a sum of N120,000 from his bank account, transferred a sum of N150,000 to a bank account, and drove to Berger area, where they pushed the victim out of their bus and zoomed off.

Confessing, Ebelebe denied using gun, but admitted using acid and pepper to torture stubborn victims.

He also denied pushing victims out of their operational bus saying: “If you push victim out when the bus is on motion, he will sustain injury. The victim (Abiodun) did not sustain injury.”

The second suspect, John, said: “I was sent to prison on remand. My case is still in court. My lawyer perfected my bail that is why I was out of the prison. I came to Lagos because my case was coming up, but these bad friends put me in trouble. I was bathing in a public toilet when police came to arrest Benjamin and arrested me also.

‘’I am not the one that pushed victims out of moving bus. My gang is different from their gang. They mentioned me when police arrested them. I am an armed robber, but I did not follow them to rob this victim(Abiodun). I had followed them to rob only once and my role is to put pepper in the eyes of the victim to enable me search victims, without much resistance. We poured acid on the leg of stubborn victims not the face. We were very careful with acid.’’

The third suspect, Benjamin said: ’’I am from Ogoja, Cross River State. My wife divorced me because her mother told her that my family is associated with polygamy.

‘’ I came to buy second hand clothes in Lagos and pickpockets stole my money. I started sleeping at Iyana Ipaja Motor Park. When police came there with one Emeka, he pointed at me that I was one of them. I am an armed robber but I did not follow them to rob this victim (Abiodun). I have robbed seven times. I have not been arrested nor charged to court. I am very lucky.

‘’I slept in Iyana Ipaja Motor Park, where some people stole my money, the loss of the money I used for business made me to join a robbery gang. We don’t use gun. That thing they mistook for a gun is an ordinary spanner tied with cloth to make it look like a gun.’’

  • Boy bathes girl with acid on her birthday

Boy bathes girl with acid on her birthday

A 14-year-old girl, Victoria Emmanuel is battling for her life after being bathed with acid by a friend on her birthday.

The incident occurred on March 29, around the night market in Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos Mainland, where she was celebrating her birthday.

While her peers were pouring water on her body, a 13-year-old boy, Moshood Yusuf, allegedly entered a shop, picked up a bottle and emptied its content on Victoria.

Witnesses said Yusuf thought he was pouring a disinfectant known as Izal on the girl.

When The Nation visited the victim’s 1, Babaelegbe Street, Mafoluku home yesterday, Yusuf’s parents were there begging her family.

Victoria said she told Yusuf not to pour the content of the bottle on her since they did not know what was inside.

She said: “It was my birthday. I had told my friends the previous Monday that Wednesday March 29 was my birthday. So, when I went to fetch water at the night market that night, those who came to my house to rejoice with me followed me.

“I was carrying a big bucket on my head but on the road, they put it down and started pouring the water on me to celebrate my birthday. Some were pouring dirty water on me and others sand. That was how Moshood ran into a shop and brought out a container. There was something inside and I told him not to pour it on me because we don’t know what was in it. He opened it, smelled it and said it smelt like chemical. We told him again that he shouldn’t pour that on me but he didn’t listen. As I walked past him, he poured the content on my body from behind. I screamed and ran towards the tap but he got there before me and opened it so that water would pour on my body.

“While I was under the tap, the woman who owns the place chased us away that I was wasting her water, though she owed me N70. That was the last thing I remembered. I was later told that I fainted and was rushed to Edmark Hospital. I was discharged in the evening of the following day because my daddy insisted he wanted to take me to General Hospital. So, I was moved to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where they have been giving me treatment.

“Moshood was arrested by policemen from Makinde but he was later released. He has not come to see me since then but his parents have been coming. We didn’t fight. We have never quarrelled. He’s my friend. I don’t know what happened. Although, one Ganiyu claimed that he told him he was going to hurt me, I don’t know if that’s true.

“They said they have asked him where he got acid from but he insisted he thought it was Izal that was inside. He said he was looking for a container to enable him carry more water and pour on me. But the shop owner has denied keeping any acid in her shop. The woman was crying and swearing that she didn’t keep anything like that since she has little children, who could have easily gotten to it.”

Victoria’s mother, Mrs. Chidinma Emmanuel lamented the hardship the incident has caused her family, saying that she has not been able to concentrate on her petty trade.

She noted the expenses they have incurred since the mishap, wondering if her daughter’s skin would ever heal.

Mrs. Emmanuel said her family was not interested in a case, explaining that they would appreciate if the hospital bill was refunded.

She said: “His parents have been coming. They have extended solidarity but I think it shouldn’t just be by words of mouth. You can see that we are a struggling family.  This unfortunate incident has cost us so much. There’s a drug we have been buying N1,200 per sachet to apply on her body.

“I expect that Moshood’s family would support us financially or pick the bills, since all the children there said he was told to not pour the content on my daughter but he went ahead to do it. So far, we haven’t heard anything from them. Yes, they paid the N16,000 we were charged at Edmark the night the incident happened. After that, they haven’t done anything again. If they are coming for settlement, the only settlement is for them to pay all expenses incurred.”

Moshood’s mother, Mrs. Ganiyat Yusuf described the incident as a mistake, saying her family was awaiting the final outcome from LASUTH, to know what to do next.

She said: “It was just a mistake. In fact, Moshood also got burnt by the acid on his chest and leg. He didn’t know the content of the bottle and since they were jubilating, he poured it on her without knowing. It’s a regrettable mistake. But what we want is for peace to reign. We don’t want a situation where both families would start fighting over it or the two children becoming enemies.”

Couple bathed with acid while making love in Kano

Lovemaking turned sorrow for a Kano couple after an unidentified person poured acid on them during sexual intercourse.  According to sources, the incident occurred penultimate week at the couple’s house in the Gyadi Gyadi /Karkasara area of Kano.

It was gathered that the unidentified perpetrator fled before neighbours responded to the couple’s distress call.

Although the husband has since been admitted in an undisclosed hospital, it was gathered that the wife, Amina Moses, was the worst hit. Amina, according to a source, was first admitted in Aminu Kano Specialist Hospital, where she spent some days and was treated.

One of the eyewitnesses who asked not be named said that the closeness of the couple’s bed to the window of their apartment made it easy for their assailant to carry out the dastardly act.

She said: “Amina and her husband called Moses were making love in the evening of the unfortunate day, when they suddenly raised the alarm that someone had poured a liquid substance on them through their window.

“We rushed into their room only to find them in pains. Amina was the one that was badly hit by the liquid substance suspected to be acid. She was treated at the Aminu Kano Specialist Hospital and their assailant has not been apprehended as we speak despite the fact that the matter was reported to the state police command.

“The closeness of their bed to the window made it easy for their attacker to successfully carry out his mission and escape without being apprehended.”

Our correspondent made fruitless efforts to reach the spokesman of Kano Police Command, Mr Ubayi Ringim Raubilu, as calls to his mobile phonesdid not go through, while he did not answer a text message  sent to his phone line, at press time.

  • Darasimi Ogunwunmi, Boy Three, who drank Acid

We take many things for granted, and know of how  silly we can be with the health of our bodies only when trouble assails us. The news broke last week of a boy aged three, Darasimi Ogunwunmi, who mistakenly drank caustic soda at a day care centre. He was said to have told the minders many times that he was thirsty and helped himself when he receive no attention. Poor boy!

His throat was burnt and his stomach was damaged. He is now feed liquid food through a tube passed into the stomach from the nose, or through a hole made in the stomach. I will return to this subject later. Today, I only wish to mentioned that there are many Nigerian adults who feed through a tube in the stomach because their throats are blocked and do not let food down into the stomach. For some of those people, there can be intense feeling of pain in the stomach whenever they pass food down into the stomach through a tube. They often have to be on dangerous pain killers and dangerous antibiotics every day. In a recent case, it has been observed that mixing liquefied meals with a greens drink keep away the pain and prevents the need for antibiotics. The helpful greens mixture are wheatgrass, chlorella, Spirulina, Kale and a teaspoonful of splina liquid chlorophyll. Golden sea root powder may be added from time to time. So may be orange peel powder. More of these cases later.

‘But she seemed like she wasn’t serious. I thought she was trying to frighten me a little bit.’

  • London Police ‘accuse Nigerian of pouring acid on self’

London Police ‘accuse Nigerian of pouring acid on self’

United Kingdom Met Police are probing the mysterious acid attack on a Nigerian

POLICE in the United Kingdom are looking at whether the appalling injuries suffered by a Nigerian acid-burn victim may have been self-inflicted.

Naomi Oni, 20, sparked a UK-wide fundraising appeal after she was left scarred for life in an apparently random acid attack.

But officers are now said to be considering the possibility Oni did it herself after they discovered she had researched acid attacks online before she was maimed at the end of last year.

They are examining her laptop computer amid reports she looked up information on Katie Piper, the former model who has campaigned for facial disfigurement victims since she was scarred in an acid attack in 2008.

Victoria’s Secret shop assistant Naomi claims a woman in a niqab threw the unidentified liquid over her as she walked home in Dagenham, east London, on December 30.

She suffered full thickness burns to her face, arm, hand and leg and was blinded for two days.

After spending nearly a month in hospital, she made an emotional plea for her alleged attacker to come forward.

Naomi said: “I just want this person to come forward. How can they sleep at night knowing they have done this?

“I have stopped hating them. I just feel sorry for them and I wonder what’s going on in their life to want to make someone else suffer like that.”

But detectives have quizzed her family members on whether Oni could have hurt herself.

Naomi’s law student student boyfriend Ato Owede, 23, said: “The police are not doing enough to catch the person.

“I think they did ask her mum if she did this herself — that’s just crazy. They need to keep on investigating.

“They’re concentrating on the wrong things at the moment in terms of her researching acid attacks and stuff like that.

“They are just coming to a silly conclusion.”

She previously told The Sun: “The police haven’t been able to find anyone — they even asked my aunt if I had done it to myself, which really upset me.

“Why would anyone do this to themselves?”

She also appeared on ITV’s This Morning and has signed deal for another interview with Take a Break magazine.

The Met Police confirmed they had seized a number of items from Oni and said they were following a number of lines of inquiry.

A spokesman said: “Inquiries are ongoing.

“A number of items have been seized during the course of the investigation and they are being examined as part of ongoing inquiries.”
