  • ACN berates Kwara over burglars’ invasion of Finance Ministry

PDP accuses ACN of circulating ‘fake documents’

The Kwara State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has said the reported invasion of the Ministry of Finance by burglars was not ordinary.

But the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused the opposition of circulating “fake documents” on the Abdulfatah Ahmed administration to deceive the public.

The government had said the incident was a robbery and that it was being investigated.

A statement in Ilorin, the state capital, by PDP Director of Publicity, Alhaji Mas’ud Adebimpe, said the opposition was painting the PDP “in bad light” with the documents.

But ACN maintained its position on the burglary at the Finance Ministry, that it was more than a robbery. It also raised some questions for the public to ponder.

In a statement in Ilorin, ACN Chairman Kayode Olawepo said the incident was a conspiracy to cover up some alleged underhand deals.

The statement reads: “These are some of the questions begging for answers, although the handwriting on the wall is clear enough for an average person to sense a cover-up and conspiracy of sort. This incident adds to the long list of suspicious actions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration which ultimately explain why it would do everything to remain in power so that the people will never know the truth.

“But the truth can never be buried. The timing of the burglary, the place of the burglary (the Ministry of Finance, of all places) and the fact that sensitive documents were carted away, leave no one in doubt that the incident was no ordinary armed robbery.

“Quite a number of disturbing news have been emanating from Kwara State in the past few months, all bordering on corruption, mismanagement, deceit and grand conspiracies to keep the people perpetually groping in the dark for a brighter future.

“On September 17, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued a circular banning all commercial banks from lending further credits to Kwara State Government, among other debtors said to be owing the Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON).

“That incident confirmed the fears of our people about the profligacy and corruption of the PDP-led administration in the state. Many patriotic citizens have called for a probe of the embarrassing blacklisting. But the PDP government does not seem to be tired of its shameful conducts, as the story in Sahara Reporters on the burglary at the Ministry of Finance indicated.

“As scary as this incident was, even scarier is the fact that the Kwara State Government has carried on as if nothing ever happened! We understand the civil servants have been directed not to mention it to anyone. Clearly, many things are not right here and many questions are begging for answers.

“Was the September 21 failed attempt at breaking into the ministry reported to the security agencies? If yes, why was there no security beef up at the place, in view of the sensitive nature of the ministry?

“Why has the state government kept a sealed lip about this terrible incident, given the dangerous signals it sends to the public? These signals include that nobody is safe, if burglars can, at will, break into guarded property of the government.

“This burglary came at a time anti-graft agencies are vetting the books of the former administration on its handling of the controversial local government allocations/joint accounts/State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) funds.

“We understand that the governor’s spokesman Femi Akorede said on twitter that it was an armed robbery case and is being investigated. If so, what would armed robbers do with documents, including carting away the e-back-up of financial transactions between 2003 till date? And, finally, why did the police command not respond to the distress call by the injured guardsman?”

    •Petitions Ondo CP

The Director, Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) in Akure North/South Federal Constituency, Mr. Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, yesterday petitioned the Ondo State Commissioner of Police over an alleged plan by Labour Party (LP) thugs to kidnap Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) members wearing the party’s T-shirts and fez caps.

The party also cried out over alleged unlawful arrest of some of its leaders in Ondo town where Governor Olusegun Mimiko hails from.

It was learnt that a combined team of police and soldiers invaded Ondo town at the weekend and arrested the Ondo East Youth Leader of the ACN, Akintelure Akinsola (aka Jebutu) and Aloba Akindele along with two others.

They were reportedly whisked away to an unknown destination as a fallout of the massive crowd that graced the redemption rally organised by ACN last Wednesday.

Ogunleye said in the petition: “On October 4, at about 2.50pm, suspected hoodlums in a black unmarked Range Rover conveyed five hefty men wearing black suits and LP caps at the front gate of the Hospital Management Board (HMB), Alagbaka and attacked an ACN member, Mr. Segun Akinsote.

“Immediately they alighted from the vehicle, they attempted to drag him into their vehicle, but he escaped.

“They held horse whips, carried weapons and forced people to run for safety.”

He said the offence of Akinsote was that he wore an ACN T-shirt and fez cap, adding: “We wish to inform the police and other security agents that LP members and their cohorts have concluded plans to kidnap our members found with ACN souvenirs.”

The ACN chieftain noted that everybody has freedom to associate with any political party. He decried the attack on people for wearing the party’s T-shirts and fez caps.

He urged the police to be unbiased and perform their duties in a professional manner that would not heat up the polity during the election.

Copies of the petition were sent to security agencies including the State Security Service (SSS) and Divisional Police Officers (DPO) in Akure Division.

  • ACN chieftain alleges threat to life

A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ondo State, Mr. S.S. Famoritiye, an engineer, has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Police Command, over threat to his life.

In the petition signed by his lawyer, Oluwole Adeyemo, Famoritiye said some opposition political party members also destroyed his property and those of his relations and supporters.

He said privileged information at his disposal showed that he and some of his followers in ACN have been marked for elimination by hired killers prior to the forthcoming poll.

He said he believes he has become a target for elimination because he has been mobilising support for the ACN towards the victory of its candidate, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), in the October 20 poll.

According to Famoritiye, a Golf car belonging to Mr. Isaac Anowo who defected from the Labour Party (LP) to ACN was set ablaze on September 18 by suspected LP agents.

His lawyer wrote: “Some desperate opposition members in LP at Ilara-Mokin in Ifedore Local Government of Ondo State who are bent on maintaining the status quo, are sending wrong signals that portend danger to the security of lives and property of our client, his family and supporters in Ilara-Mokin.

“Our client and his supporters can no longer conduct their activities with ease and freedom guaranteed by the constitution for the fear that he, his family and supporters will in the process of their legitimate and political activities be exterminated.

“In the light of these facts, we urge you to cause urgent investigations to be conducted into this issue and at the same time bring this gang of hoodlums to book to avert loss of lives, breach of peace and ensure the security of lives and property of our client, his family and followers.

“We seek maximum police protection of the lives of our client, his family, supporters and their property at Ilara-Mokin.”

Adeyemo added that the development has jeopardised his client’s constitutional rights. He copied the petition, dated September 24, to the ACN leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Alara of Ilara-Mokin, Oba A.A. Adefehinti and Akeredolu.

“Your rapid response and anticipated co-operation in this respect will be appreciated,” the petitioner wrote, recalling that several pre-elections political killings have remained unresolved to date.

  • LP members defect to ACN

    LP members defect to ACN

Some members of the Labour Party (LP) at the weekend defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The leaders of the three groups that defected at Ipesi-Akoko in Akoko South East Local Government are Kunle Olowo, Rotimi Olanrewaju and Aminu Isiaka.

Isiaka led the Ebira group. He said the Mimiko administration is a failure.

He urged people to support ACN for good governance.

The defectors were received by an ACN chieftain and a former commissioner, Solagbade Amodeni.

They assured the new members of equal opportunities. About 1,000 LP members defected from the party to ACN in Ifira community with leaders such as Chief Festus Idowu and Mrs. Emily Ominowa Sanni.

The new ACN members slammed an LP leader in the area who they said was appointed as the chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) but could not influence the appointment of one person.

Amodeni and Kunle Oyegoke received the defectors in Ifira.

  • PDP members defect to ACN

Hundreds of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area(LCDA) in Lagos state have joined the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN).

The decampees were led by Mr. Idowu Ogundare at a rally which coincided with ACN meeting in Agbowa.

Ogundare said they left the PDP because of the developmental efforts of the Executive Chairman of Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA, Prince Segun Adetola, and Governor Raji Fashola.

Adetola, he said, has initiated several progressive moves such as distribution of 100 free GCE forms, construction of a block of six classrooms with head teacher’s office and provision of benches, tables and chairs in schools across the LCDA.

  • ACN to Mimiko: pack and go

ACN to Mimiko: pack and go

The governorship campaign train of the Ondo State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) rumbled into Akoko North Senatorial District, yesterday.

It was electrifying, with the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, enjoining the people to vote out the ruling Labour Party (LP) governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

    The election is October 20.

The former Lagos State governor said it was curious that Mimiko, who opposed former Governors Adebayo Adefarati’s and Olusegun Agagun’s second term ambitions, was demanding for a second term.

Besides, Tinubu stressed that Mimiko’s aspiration lacked justification because he has not performed creditably in the last three and half years.

Beaming a searchlight on his administration, the ACN leader said the governor, who, according to him, failed to deliver on roads, education, health care, water and job creation, lacked the credibility to seek continuity in office.

He said: “If you spend three years to build one hospital, you will spend 15 years to build three. Which market is he building? That is the domain of my mother in Lagos.”

Alluding to the significance of the October 20 governorship poll, Tinubu said it is critical to the Southwest’s economic integration, adding that Ondo State should not be left out in the march of regional progress.

At the rally, the ACN leader also warned the police to desist from molesting ACN leaders in the state ahead of the election to prevent violent reaction by the people. He said it was wrong for the police, which is funded by the public purse, to become tools of oppression in the hand of any governor.

The governorship candidate, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), reiterated his commitment to women and youth development, promising to redeem his promise to create 30,000 jobs for youths, if voted into office.

The ACN flag bearer, who said Mimiko must reap what he sowed, objected to the governor’s second ambition on the ground that he has remained a consistent advocate of one term for any governor.

Tinubu, who flew into Ikare in a chopper, stormed the rally around 2 pm, waving the broom, the symbol of the ACN – at the crowd. He was accompanied by the party’s National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola and former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

Towards the end of the rally, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi joined the party leaders on the podium.

Akeredolu was accompanied by his wife, Mercy, his running mate, Dr. Paul Akintelure, Director of Akeredolu Campaign Organisation Chief Tayo Alasoadura, Ifedayo Abegunde, and other members of the campaign team.

Highlights of the rally included the presentation of the flag to the candidate by Chief Akande, who enjoined the people to endorse Akeredolu at the poll – in public interest.

Presenting the flag, the national chairman said: “I thank you all for your love and patience. I am giving the flag to the next governor of the state. I will return to thank you after the election.”

Thousands of party faithful from far and near thronged the Ikare Cenotaph, the venue of the mega rally, cheering Akeredolu and numerous ACN leaders who turned up in solidarity with him. They defiled the downpour, which heralded the carnival-like ceremony that lasted for over seven hours.

It was reminiscent of the First and Second Republics when the campaign train of the legendary Obafemi Awolowo hit Akokoland. Brooms filled the air amid the rain, with the sea of party supporters shunning the umbrella, the symbol of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Party followers came from Oka, Oba, Irun, Ikaramu, Akunnun, Epinmin, Iwaro, Ugbe, Ibaramu, Akungba, Supare, Ajowa, Arigidi, Okegbe, Ogbagi, Eti-Oro, Ikun, Ayegunle, Isua, Ipesi, Ifira and Owo. They were locked in the unity of purpose.

Ace musicians Wasiu Ayinde and Buga, foremost Ewi exponent Olayiwola Arowolo Elaloro, renowned actor Fadeyi Oloro, and the Owo Cultural Troupe were thrill the crowd with music and wisecracks.

In a symbolic manner, some party members mobilised a motor saw machine to hew down “the Iroko”, the tree from which the governor borrowed his nickname.

Although policemen and other security agents were around to ensure security, there was no display of unruly behaviour by the multitude.

The Southwest leader of the party, Senator James Kolawole, led a pack of ACN leaders in the zone. With him were the chairman of the party from Osun State, Mr. Biyi Adelowo, his Lagos, Ondo and Oyo counterparts – Otunba Dele Ajomale, Chief Akin Adesoji and Chief Akin Oke; Lagos State Vice Chairman Cardinal James Odunmbaku, Senator Titus Olupitan, Alhaji Ganiyu Badmus, Southwest Publicity Secretary Ayo Afolabi, Youth Leader Abdullahi Enilolobo, Secretary to Osun State Government Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, and Mr. Toba Oke, chairman of Ifako-Ijaye Local Government, Lagos.

Also at the rally were Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose, Mr. Wale Akinterinwa, Dr. Jayeola Ajatta, Prince Olu Adegboro, Ganiyu Abayomi, former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Ondo State, Prince Diran Iyantan, former state legislator Jaja Tayo Abidakun, South District leader Mr. Wale Akintimehin, Comrade Sola iji, Igbede Adeolu, Gboyega Adedipe, Mr. Ranti Oyebade, Banji Ajiloge, Olayato Aribo, Akinsehinwa Apata, Women Leader Modupe Johnson, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, Ojo Akingba, Prof. Agboola Ogunlowo, Sam Omojuwa, Saka Yusuf, Wole Elaye, Dele Ogunsakin, Mr. Tokunbo Ajasin, Chief Ajibola Adebayo, Idowu Otetubi, Olakunle Eko, Enas mohammed, Toyin Ajinde, Dr. Segun Akinwale, Chief Ademola Adetula, Kunle Eko Davies, Adebambo Odoro, Mr. Femi Adekanmbi, Basorun Wale Oyewole and Timehin Adelegbe.

Tinubu, who thanked the party followers for the huge turnout, asked: Who is your governor? The crowd roared: “Akeredolu!”.

He also asked: “Which party would you vote for on October 20? The people chorused: “CAN!”.

The party leader asked the electorate to reject Mimiko at the poll, saying that he is an ingrate. He said ACN will provide the amenities the LP government has denied the people, including good roads, free education, potable water, good hospitals and jobs for youths.

Tinubu said: “Today, you have seen our candidate. Somebody calls himself Rahman Olusegun Mimiko. The judgment of God has come. The next election will be an exercise of success and reward for you. It is a vote that will liberate Yorubaland. Iroko wants to be in the forest alone. Use your broom to chase them away. Chase away hunger, poverty, unemployment, penury, disease, water shortage, lack of drugs.”

The ACN leader justified his description of Mimiko as an ingrate unworthy of more political favours, saying that he had betrayed the trust of the progressive bloc in the Southwest.

He recalled: “Four years ago, Iroko came to me, weeping. He came along with two of my brothers, complaining that he was being cheated and that we should help him. We had looked at the PDP and we were displeased. PDP had just stolen our votes in the Southwest. We began the war. The warrior, Aregbesola, was fighting. We fought in Edo, Ibadan, Abeokuta. I am reporting this to you so that you can judge Mimiko with your votes.

“I took him as my brother. I gave him money and all logistics. The radio station that has become his enemy today was used to help him. It belongs to us. We went to Europe to look for help for him. It was not free. We spent pound sterling. Mathew chapter six, verse seven says ‘don’t give what is holy to the dog or swine because they will cast their spoilt on it. We have given what is holy to Mimiko and he has cast his spoilt on it. The Book of Psalms, chapter 17, verse 13 says, ‘if you reward goodness with evil, evil will not depart from your house’. When he could not enter town freely, we gave him bullet proof car. Judge him by your votes.”

Tinubu, who explained that Mimiko’s continuation in office meant a setback to the integration agenda, added: “Mimiko wants to isolate Ondo State from Yoruba states and Afenifere mainstream. We do free education and relieve people of WAEC fees. Look at what is happening in Lagos. Ondo State collects more federal allocation than Lagos. I sympathise with Akokoland. You are enduring bad roads, lack of medical care. Where is water? For three years, he has been feeding himself and his family with state money.

“I don’t have a single vote in Ondo. Chiefs Osoba and Akande have no vote here. Akeredolu has a vote. We are struggling because of the masses. If you cooperate with Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Edo, and Ekiti, we will have a refinery. It will produce thousands of jobs. Railway will come. If LASTMA, LAWMA, Highway Managers are set up here, there will be jobs. Why can’t Ondo enjoy micro water works?

“He said one term only and fought Adefarati and Agagu over one term. Now, he wants a second term. He will do his second term in prison. Don’t be afraid. If it is difficult to remove the ring of power from his finger, the finger will be cut off.”

Tinubu praised the police for maintaining security at the rally. But he urged them to be non-partisan in Ondo politics.

He said: “Police, be careful. Stop being partisan. Some of you are good. I will not denigrate you. If you frame up our members and arrest them, there will be problem. The people of Nigeria pay you salary. If there is action, there will be reaction. If you intimidate us, we will react. So, we will not allow you to intimidate our members and arrest them without justification.”

The ACN leader advised the people to shun violence as members of a great party that would soon take over from the ruins of the Labour Party government. He said Akeredolu is a man of great character, intelligence and capability, adding that he had served society as a talented, reliable and dependable professional.

Inubu praised the party patriots who stepped down for him, including Prof. Boroffice, the Asiwaju of Akokoland, Segun Abraham, Ajatta, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, Mrs. Anifowose, Akinsehinwa Apata and Alasoadura.

He said the ACN government will set up a skill development programme in Ondo State, adding that Akeredolu will give fish and, at the same time, teach the people how to fish.

To the prospective voters, the former Lagos State governor said: “Don’t be afraid. They will not intimidate you. It is a loser who will resort to violence, oppress, repress and use police to intimidate. Don’t leave the polling station. Nobody has the right to chase you out. Don’t use the hand you use to thumbprint to put the ballot paper into the box, otherwise, it will be void. Vote and defend your vote.”

Aregbesola sang a song mocking those who invoked the rain to disrupt the rally, saying that ACN will not hide from rain or sun in the Sunshine State.

For him, it was a homecoming of a sort. Seized by nostalgia, the Osun governor paid tributes to the leaders and people of Ikare, where he grew up as a school boy.

Aregbesola said that Ondo State cannot be in antithetical relationship with its progressive kith and kin in the Southwest, adding: “This Iroko will wither away”.

He added: “On poll day, wake up early. Let our mothers wake up early. Cook for your household. After that, take your bath and dress well. Prepare to face the electoral marauders. You men, prepare for the electoral duty. After voting, you women can go, but men should wait behind. Give your bloc vote to ACN. Hew the Iroko tree.”

Osoba said: “Our party took its root from Awolowo. When ‘Demo Party’ rigged election in 2003, only Lagos survived. We stood as warriors and took back Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Edo. Oshiomhole policed the vote in Edo in 2007 and 2012. He won. By the grace of God, Akeredolu will win massively.”

Boroffice thanked the crowd for their resilience, saying: “As you trooped out today, troop out on October 20 to vote ACN. On the ballot paper, you will see ACN and the broom; thumbprint appropriately.”

Abayomi said: “I ask you, people of Akoko, do you love Akeredolu? I have discusse with him. He will tackle your problems. Vote for him.”

Ajomale spoke on the need for Ondo people to join the progressive bloc by voting out Mimiko.

He said: “ACN is ruling Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Edo and Ekiti. Ondo should not be different. We have a chance on October 20.”

Echoing him, former Lagos State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Agunsoye said: “Ondo should not be left out of regional economic integration in the Southwest. On October 20, vote and not only that, wait around to police your vote.”

Abidakun, an Akure Labour Party (LP) chieftain, who defected to ACN a day before the rally, flayed Mimiko for what he called personalisation of power, adding that he was an ingrate who turned around to bite the finger that fed him. He urged the people of the state to vote ACN to have a political relief.

Ajatta said: “You must hack down Iroko. ACN has promised to repair the damage to Akoko by LP government.”

Gboyega, son of the late Chief Adefarati, urged the people of Akoko and Owo to maintain their political understanding and unity.

He said: “Let us vote for Aketi. Akoko and Owo are the same. When Ajasin wanted to become governor, Akoko supported him. When Adefarati wanted to be governor, Owo supported him. I call on the people of Akoko to vote for Akeredolu.”

Abraham said: “Tinubu is the Awo of our time. He loves us in Ondo State and Yorubaland. ACN has promised to develop Akoko. I have that assurance. All ACN leaders love Akoko. That is why Aregbesola came here to set up a computer centre. ACN will not disappoint us. Our candidate and his running mate are professionals known worldwide. Vote for them.”

Akinsehinwa-Apata said: “Akoko will give 100 percent vote to ACN. Akeredolu was part of the success of Iroko, but Iroko is an ingrate. Vote him out”

Olayato said: “Ondo State is today outside the progressive bloc. It must return to the fold on October 20”.

Akeredolu hailed the courage of Tinubu, saying that he is a great leader. He said great leaders like him are rare, urging Yoruba to always pray for him.

He unfolded his agenda, assuring that women and youth development would be one of his priorities. He said he would provide 30,000 jobs for youths.

Akeredolu said Mimiko’s second term aspiration is a nullity, adding that an advocate of one term cannot enjoy continuity in office.

He stressed; “Mimiko prayed for one term for Adefarati; it was answered. He prayed for one term for Agagu; it was answered. Now, we are praying that he should only spend one term; the prayer will be answered’.

Ex-Commissioner criticises Fed Govt on flooding

The Federal Government has been criticised for not addressing the flood ravaging the nation.

The National Legal Adviser, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and former Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Muiz Banire, said the Federal Government was shirking its responsibility.

Banire, who spoke at the award night of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIB), in Ikeja, last week, said the government has, over the years, turned deaf ears to entreaties to build dams to store excess storm water and dredge our rivers, especially rivers Niger and Benue, to create cavity to hold water.

The former commissioner, who bagged a high performance award at the dinner, observed that accusing Cameroon of inundating the nation with flood water from her Lagdo Dam is misplaced.

He said Nigeria ought to have built her counterpart dam for water retention since the 80s, but didn’t even when Cameroon built hers in 1982.

He accused the Federal Government of insensitivity to the plight of the people, stressing that until the government mad the welfare of the people its priority, the public would continually be exposed  to avoidable danger and unnecessary hardships.

He warned that the number of people killed and displaced, and the properties destroyed will be on the increase, unless necessary measures are taken, as the effect of climate change will continue to affect the intensity of rainfall and water will always find its level. Thus all mitigative and adaptive measures must be taken to tackle the effects of climate change, while emergency management machinery should be made ready all the time, he stressed

Banire said the respite Lagos State is enjoying today is because the state has since 2007 made construction and cleaning of drainage channels a priority.

Addressing the participants as the chairman of the award of the Institute of Building, Banire urged them to take concrete steps to enlighten the government and the people about their role as builders, articulate the differences between their training and that of other professionals in the built industry.

He said many people are not aware of the institute and its role, adding that the lack of awareness has created room for quacks from other professions to take over their jobs. He said the supplanting of professionals by quacks, might be largely responsible for the frequent collapse of buildings.

He said building collapse may not necessarily result from the use of inferior materials, stating that the application of the materials is another issue which requires technical -know -how.  He advised them to conduct a research into building collapse and submit the report to the authorities.

President, Nigeria Institute of Building Chuks Omeife, praised Banire for his comments on the plight of the institution and his advice on the way forward.

He noted that his contribution to the built environment, especially his exploits in the ministries of Transportation and the Environment, won him the award.

The several beautification parks and massive drainage works, he added, have huge positive impact on the state and the people.

  • ACN to Nigerians: fight ‘internal colonialists’

ACN to Nigerians: fight ‘internal colonialists’

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has urged Nigerians to gird their loins and fight for their independence from those who have assumed the role of ‘’internal colonialists’’.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said incompetent leadership, bad governance, massive corruption and lack of patriotism by successive administrations have made Nigerians worse today than they were shortly after independence.

‘’A country that offered so much hopes and possibilities for its citizens at independence has today become a land of suffering, insecurity and near hopelessness, no thanks to visionless leaders who have failed to lead a well-endowed nation to harness the talents of its vibrant, energetic and resilient people. The result is what we have today: a country exhibiting all the characteristics of a failed state,’’ it said.

ACN, however, urged Nigerians to keep hope alive and to remember that they hold all the aces in securing their independence from the rapacious, thieving and bumbling class of people masquerading as leaders.

The party said while it will be unfair to blame the current leadership for all the woes of post-independence Nigeria, the truth is that the current administration has proved as incompetent and visionless as its predecessors in its fickle efforts to take Nigeria to the promised land.

It went on: ‘’About 13 years after the PDP took over the reins of power in Nigeria, the people have been left to gnash their teeth and rue lost hopes and opportunities. Over two years of President Goodluck Jonathan being in charge, it has been a season of cluelessness and the country has been forlorn of hope.

‘’Therefore, we are saying to the good people of Nigeria: Use your power to do away with a party and government that have only enriched their ranks and impoverished the people; that celebrate growth without development and hail so-called job-creating projects without jobs; and a party and government that tout a two-week wonder of rainfall-induced power stability as evidence of a successful power sector reform.

‘’Some 52 years after independence, it is time for Nigerians to say NO to a party and government that say the manufacturing environment is improving when factories are either shutting down or functioning far below installed capacity; a party and government presiding over a leading oil-producing nation in which its people are daily searching for kerosene, petrol and diesel; a party and government that say they are winning the war against security at a time a Commissioner escorted by armed policeman can be kidnapped, perhaps by ransom seekers; a party and government that say security is improving but are cowering behind the walls of a fortified presidential villa to mark independence anniversary for the second year running.

‘’It is time for Nigerians to seek a credible alternative to a party and government that say they are winning the war against corruption when the worst case of corruption in the country’s history, the stealing of billions of naira in the name of fuel subsidy, has yet to be conclusively tackled.

‘’That alternative exists in the party and governments that have given the people of Lagos, Edo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo and Ogun states reasons not to see democracy as a failed system of governance, and it is time for Nigerians to embrace this alternative to avoid setting the nation on the path to another 52 years of paper independence,’’ ACN said.

ACN uncovers plot to disrupt rally

Ondo State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday alleged plot by the ruling Labour Party (LP) to disrupt the party’s mega rally slated for Ikare -Akoko today.

The Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) alleged that Governor Olusegun Mimiko has made ACN uniform for suspected LP thugs, who would cause trouble at the rally to embarrass the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande and other leaders.

ACO’s Director of Publicity and Strategy, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, said in a statement that the party leaders have alerted the police to the plot to disrupt the rally.

He said: “ACN has just uncovered a plot by Governor Mimiko to use suspected thugs to disrupt the rally taking place in Ikare-Akoko. We heard about a plan to give some boys ACN uniform to storm Ikare to disrupt the mega rally and embarrass our candidates and leaders.

“We appeal to the Commissioner of Police to make security arrangements to prevent the invasion by thugs. Governor Mimiko has been holding rallies and nobody has disturbed him. He should not cause more troubles in the state. We need tolerance, peace and tranquility during the election. We urge the police to act fast in the interest of peace. Violence is an ill wind that blows nobody any good.”
