I’M NOT MARRIED YET, BUT I’VE GOT ACTING…–NOLLYWOOD ACTRESS OGHENEKARO ITENE

Delta State born actress Oghenekaro Itene is poised for the most enviable celebrity status. This she does by combining acting with charity works in Nigeria and South Africa. In a WhatsApp chat with VICTOR AKANDE, the amiable entertainer gives some interesting perspectives to her life’s personal desires.

HOW has the journey been since you started acting in 2013? It’s been both challenging and exciting. God has been faithful.

How many films do you have to your credit so far?

I’ve lost count. Some are yet to be released.

What are the few notable ones that readily come to your mind?

I would say Tinsel, Esohe, Shattered Mirror…

Does Tinsel explain why you’re using a South African number in Nigeria?

(Laughs) Is that part of the interview or you are just asking?

Yes, the interview. A build-up if you like…

I do have a Nigerian number. I gave you this number because I respond faster on this number. I do lots of volunteering work for NGOs in South Africa.

Can you shed light on this?

I only use this number for my WhatsApp because of that purpose so I can be easily reached by these bodies. It’s something I do as a sacrifice, so I’m really not comfortable saying much about it. And besides, I go to SA every now and then.

I think Nigeria needs your input too on voluntary works. And supposing we don’t have such initiatives here yet, would you want to replicate them?

I’m open to serve. Besides, I do loads of that in Nigeria too, but on a low key. I meant charity works.

But what other ventures pay your bills apart from acting, or would you say you make more than enough from acting?

I run other side businesses apart from acting

What really attracted you to acting?

The love for the art. I never knew I will go into acting professionally, it sort of happened, it was kind of divine.

When and how did you discover that love?

I was on a set, where I was given the job of a makeup artist, when I was asked to audition for a role and surprisingly I got the part to play a sub-lead. That was how the journey started, though I did some acting in Nursery/Primary school like every other kid while growing up.

    What did you study originally?

I studied biology at the University of Benin. But I remember when I was in Secondary School, I was in Science Department, but when it was time for literature I always joined the Art Class. It was funny; my teachers were always walking me out of the class until they got tired.

Now that you are into acting, when do you hope to stop? In other words, how far do you intend to go with acting?

It’s going to be a lifetime thing for me

And is anything hindering your pace at the moment?

Absolutely nothing… I believe God is with me in this journey. I just got back from USA after a successful tour for my latest feature film ‘Esohe’ and I’m glad to say the movie has been selected for the upcoming Nollywood Travel Film Festival which will take place in the month of September, in Toronto.

Are you married? Any children yet? If not, can all these wait if they will cost you a thing?

I’m not married, and I’ve got no kids. Marriage is from God, when God says it’s time, it’s time

What’s your ideal man and how many kids would you want to have?

My ideal man should be God-fearing, understanding, hardworking, extra caring and should be able to support my career. Also, I need to be attracted to the guy. There has to be physical attraction that will draw me to the man but at the end of the day, it’s the guy’s mind I’m going to fall in love with. I’m probably looking for a friend, someone who shares a like mind and somebody who is confident. I would love to have one kid because there are lots of kids out there that need a home, and a lot of mouths to feed.

As a Delta lady, do you think your parents would reckon with just a kid?

    My Parents are late.

Oh, sorry. Who has been your source of encouragement?

My siblings have been a source of encouragement to me. They are very supportive and they are there for me whenever I need them. I’m the baby of the house.

No wonder you seek an extra caring man…

(Laughs) Growing up, I was over pampered by my parents and siblings

Do you think there are still men out there with such qualities? Aren’t you’re asking for too much?

I pray and hope so. (Laughs) You are very funny… That’s not too much to ask for really… If he truly loves me, being caring shouldn’t be hard now don’t you think.

And it doesn’t matter how long it takes? You’re not being pressured to get married?

I come from a Christian home, and we believe it’s God that make marriages happen. I believe when it’s time, God will make it happen.

Now, what have you got to give back to the man who may be extra caring, some sets of triplets? Sorry, I forgot you said one kid…

(Laughs) I will give him my heart and my Love…

Are you worried that marriages in Nollywood hit the rocks. I mean, we have too many examples in recent times.

I have nothing to say about that. For me, when the right man comes I will get married.

You supported Mercy Aigbe’s walk recently, any personal experience regarding domestic violence?

No personal experience, but I have a cousin who went through that and it took a lot for her to speak up… The day she was rushed to the hospital after losing four months pregnancy from beating from the husband; that was the day she spoke and made the decision to take a walk. Anyone in an abusive relationship, verbal or physical, should speak out. The signs are always there…. If the victim notices this…he or she can go for counseling

Are you in a relationship? Is the lucky man in the entertainment industry? Does he understand and support your job?

    I don’t have a boyfriend now.

Who are your influences in Nollywood?

Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, Shan George and a host of other hardworking actors.

Tell us more about ‘Esohe’ the movie

‘Esohe’ is a cross cultural movie, shot in Benin and USA. The movie will be premiered later this year in Nigeria. I played the role of Itohan in the film. I just got back from USA after a successful movie premiere tour for ‘Esohe’, and I’m glad to say the movie has been selected for the upcoming Nollywood Travel Film Festival which will take place in the month of September, in Toronto.

What do you do in your leisure?

I read, write and watch movies…

    What’s your beauty regime like?

I go to the Spa during my vacations, and on my own I cleanse, exfoliate, and moisture my face regularly.

Where is your choice vacation destination?

I love South Africa. I go there often. Although I will love to tour the world if I have my way (laughs).I go to Ghana for vacation too.

    What about your favourite food…

My favorite food is ogbono soup made with dried fish and wheat.

    Kannywood ban: Actress tenders apology

Following her expulsion from acting by Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPPAN) Kannywood actress, Rahama Sadau, has tendered an unreserved apology to her fans.

Taking to her Twitter handle, the actress said that there are lines she would never cross and tenets by which she lives.

“To those who I have offended in any way, shape or form, and who I have caused any anxiety by featuring in the said music video, I sincerely apologise. It was a job and I was carrying out my role in my profession, as I would in any other production, be it Hausa language film or a Nollywood production. However, innocuous touching with other people in my line of work is inevitable,” she wrote.

She, among other things, called on Nigerians to be more tolerant and forgiving towards one another and to cease all the senseless abuse, name calling and backbiting.

The actress was expelled for featuring in the music video of Jos born singer ClassiQ’s new single I Love You.

Announcing the ban on BBC Hausa service, MOPPAN Chairman, Muhammadu Kabiru Maikaba, said that it was total.

“This is not the first time that she has been doing these wayward things. We have been warning her, but she still went ahead to dent our image,” he said.

The actress appeared in the video with ClassiQ where he was seen hugging her.

  • WHY I’M TOO BLUNT- NOLLYWOOD ACTRESS IJEOMA IMOH

WHY I’M TOO BLUNT- NOLLYWOOD ACTRESS IJEOMA IMOH

Rising actress, Ijeoma Imoh, maintains that she is still very active in the make-believe world. Currently working on her very first movie as a producer, the jovial actress in this interview with DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKANMI, speaks on her person, projects and other issues

HY have you been off the scene?

I have been trying to revive my movie career and make things happen. I have not gone anywhere. I am still very active; I don’t know why people have been asking me this same question on why I have been hiding. If you come to where I hang out, you will see more of me. Maybe that is why they have been saying I am hiding.

Being a very jovial person, have you considered comedy too?

I am considering comedy, to show another part of my acting skills. I’m working on my own personal movie, which I am trying to take time to produce. To give something that will be a hit. Because people will be seeing another me, where I will be playing a comic role this time around, since people always say I am funny; I’m giving it a try.

Where are you now with your personal projects; the car wash and lounge?

The projects are still on, but they are not something I can just rush off. It is a car wash that will have ladies doing the washing; but while that is going on, you need a place to relax. That is where the lounge comes in. I will also be floating a mini eatery and a car wash, hopefully, very soon on the island. All the services will be handled by ladies, including the washing of customers’ cars.

    Why ladies?

It is my own unique way of making it different from the other car wash centres we have all over the place. These ladies are well trained and will only be rendering services to customers. There is no personal attachment to what they are doing. And that is the reason I said they are trained.

You were at the Fidau of the late Zainab Bukky Ajayi. What was your relationship with her?

Mama was somebody that related well with everyone while she was alive. I slept at her place on several occasions. And it was nice experiencing her being, not just as an actor, but also as a mother.  And her son being my colleague, I just had to make time.

Why do you always appear casual?

This is Nigeria where it is always hot. I don’t have that strength to always keep the makeup on. I end up licking my lipstick. But when we meet on a red carpet, you will see all the necessary things put in place. It also depends on the mood. Sometimes you do not know where that person is coming from, or going to. But for me, I already know where I would be going today. Which means I already know what I will be wearing, and I also love looking simple. I just love being free.

You seem to relate well with people.

This me; I am a very blunt person and this is who I am. And if you know me very well, you will know that I do not mix business with pleasure. Regardless of whoever you are, I’m very blunt, I just say my thing, whether I am an artiste or not.

Being the playful kind, do people take advantage you?

That is something that is not new. I don’t think this has to do with being a celebrity. They keep doing it, but in my own case, I see, I feel, and I hear. And once I notice such a thing, I call you to order.

Going into movie production is a huge step for any actor. How prepared are you?

I believe in God, because I know what it takes. But I also have friends and family that I know will be ready to help when the time comes.

    What is the movie about?

I can’t go into that now; the reason is that some people do not have ideas, but are looking for other people’s idea to work on. So I won’t want to make that mistake. You want make them print movie jacket before the movie comes out? (Laughs).

How did you find yourself in the make-believe world?

I don’t like office jobs; I have always loved entertainment. But unfortunately, I cannot sing. So acting, showbiz and all the paparazzi were the options open to me.

How often do you get roles?

I am working so hard to get these jobs. But everyday, people are born wanting to do this same job. There is competition out there. Besides, many of the old faces seem not to be shifting. And you also have people coming after you for this same job. So, you need to work extra hard to see if it has to come your way.

How do you survive with these few roles?

I am acting part-time, schooling and modeling. Everything is just to make ends meet and be successful. I’ve got a timetable. So, I thank God my course is not related to calculation. And I chose to do a part-time course because it will enable me to go out there and do other things. With this, I don’t need to attend lectures. I can go online to search for materials. I can also talk to people to enrich my understanding of the course.

Have you considered doing Yoruba movies, given that you speak the language fluently?

I just need the platform and someone to put me through. I have done a few Yoruba movies. I know that you are respected if you are introduced by someone, which ensures that you get jobs to do.

As one who is not skinny, how did you end up in modeling?

There are different types of models: the plus-size, the skinny, those on bill boards and many more. So, which one will you say I don’t fit into? The face does more in the business of modeling. But at the same time, I am very smart too with my stature.

How long have you been in the industry?

I have spent almost a decade in the industry now. But I am not yet a star. Some people came and they just boomed. Some have been there before me, but I thank God that my name rings a bell to an extent. Some have also come in after me. But everybody has got his or her own luck and gift. I am still praying to hit it soon.

How has the journey been so far?

Sincerely, it’s been tough out there. It is always like a battlefield, trying to get roles and balance your career. Auditions, to the best of my knowledge, have virtually disappeared in Nollywood. You get roles these days based on how connected you are.

The trend is killing the acting spirit of most of us. If not for the encouragement and advice of some directors and producers, some of us would have left. Actually, my first acting role was in a soap opera, Young, Single and Free directed by Kinsley Omoefe. It is still running on national TV stations, and my role is very challenging. My first movie in Nollywood was Bumper-to-Bumper and it was a party scene. Though it was a minor role, I really enjoyed myself. In fact, that really opened my eyes about how Nollywood really operates. Since then, I have featured in several other Nollywood movies.

Any plans to settle down soon?

Why not? See, I am going to get married, and I am sure whoever I am getting married to will support my career. So, there is nothing like getting to a particular stage before you get married. Please, if it comes now; embrace it because it is your time. If you miss it, you miss out. You may never get another opportunity again.

But what happens if the man says you have to quit acting?

Is it the same man that came around after you have started acting? If it is a man you met before acting, you will know what to do. But if it is the one you met after you have started acting, I’ll tell him I cannot sit in an office. I am an Igbo girl and I love money. The way I love working, I love money. These days, most men, I am sure, do not want a woman who will be like a liability. I love the fact that I am working; it does not stop the respect I have for my man. Therefore, if he is not around, I can take care of things.

What do you do in your leisure time?

Sometimes, I could be boring, but I love life. It is not that hard. Just treat yourself nicely. Only you can make yourself happy. It is when you make yourself happy that people around you are happy too. If you start frowning, your face will start having marks all over. I go swimming and I dance to any sound I hear. And my friends will always say, ‘Ijeoma, won fi se e ni? The thing that is usual for me is to just go to club and dance. I also go to cinemas, if I need to go. I could be boring, but extremely playful.

South African actress on why she went nude

A South African actress, Noluvuyo Sodela, who went nude to campaign against the recent xenophobic attacks in her country, has described the act as the best way to voice-out and fight against the carnage.

Speaking exclusively to The Nation, she explained why she involved herself in campaigning against the odds. “I went semi-naked in a form of Art perspective way and it was the best I could do to voice out and fight inhuman xenophobia attacks. It worked for me as I passed the message and I’m glad it went viral.”

Responding to what people thought her motive for going nude was, she said, “It

was never a publicity stunt or any form of trying to get fame. However I wanted an attention to fellow South Africans to take a pause and read my message, I mean how hurtful I am by the senseless attacks.”

While commending her family members and friends for being supportive in the move she made, the actress explained what the pictures meant to a common man.

“My loving family and friends are very supportive, because they know I would never do something stupid. They understand the method of Art, and it’s not like I was involved in some kind of pornography, but candidly those photos are called ‘EROTIC’ in English.”

When asked what her biggest challenge was, she said, “My biggest challenge is people’s insufficient knowledge of art to celebrity’s life styles.”

According to the 21-year-old Zulu-speaking actress, “I never decided to be an actress, it’s a calling and I was called. A friend of mine, Obey Muchipisi who is a Zimbabwean-born actor once booked me to be an extra and a feature role on a TV soapie Generations and Sam Mlahleki my homie introduced me at Mountain Cultural drama classes that was situated at City Varsity in 2012, hosted by Bra Mountain.”

The actress, a known feminist, has been in the film industry for three years.

  • If I wasn’t an actress, I’d have been married –Collette Orji

If I wasn’t an actress, I’d have been married –Collette Orji

Although she holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Chemical Engineering, Collette Orji has been making a living out of acting. In this interview with OVWE MEDEME, she gives a peep into her career, charity and business, among others.

You seldom appear in movies in recent times. So, what have you been up to?

Personally, I have been working more on stories that I have been selling and on scripts that I’ve been writing. I have been doing a lot of screen plays. This year, I haven’t worked much. I have done just four films and two of them were cinema movies. I’m really falling in love with the cinema system. There is something about it that is just gearing me up to it. For me, I think I would be doing more of cinema films as much as it comes because it doesn’t come every day. Apart from this, I run my business as well as my NGO. I won’t be fully based in Nigeria again because I am expanding. I live in Abuja and the current state of insecurity there is getting me crazy.

Are you leaving the country because of insecurity?

Not at all! But it’s driving me crazy. I wasn’t there when they happened. I was on holidays when I heard of the recent bombing in Wuse II. It was very emotional for me because I go there almost every other day. I have some guys whom we do movie business with and they were also traumatised by the bombing. It is like when you had an accident on a road, you will have a phobia when next you have to travel on that same road.

By writing more of scripts, are you saying goodbye to acting?

Are you kidding me? I don’t know what else I know how to do in this world. I will be featuring in some of the stories I write. Sometimes, you don’t want to be featured in the stuff you write. But in the movies that I produce, I will be featuring in them.

Which of your scripts have been made into movies?

Some of them are War against Tradition and Bleeding Heart. Sometimes, the name with which we write a script is changed when it is made into a movie.

How soon are you coming out with your own production?

I would have done it already. I am ready, in terms of the story and the actors. But I am not sure of the finances because I’m trying to do it on my own; and if I put everything I have right now into it, I will go broke (laughs). I am a businesswoman. I have to put some things in place so that it will not affect my business. I need a couple of months more.

    What business are you into?

My business registered name is Coco House. I deal in clothings, women’s hairs, make-ups and all that. I also have an NGO called Coco Medicare Foundation. It is mostly for women who need medication and who need to go to hospitals for medical check. I’m in partnership with a couple of hospitals in India. Apart from working with the women, one-on-one, I am like an intermediary.

So far, how has it been running the foundation?

We will be a year old in August, which is also my birth month. My birthday is August 1. Within a year, we have done so much. This year, we went to a community in Anambra State and took care of about 200 primary school children who were returning to school. We also took care of the elderly in the community; so, we are trying to work on what we will do for the one-year celebration. We are still planning. We haven’t really given it the final picture, so I can’t say exactly what we are doing. I will be in Nigeria for that.

Who runs your business when you are away?

When it comes to my NGO, I’ve got a team in Nigeria. Gone are the days when you had to travel to sign a business deal. I have my team for my NGO. I have my staff and a personal assistant for my movie jobs. I was called down to do a job recently, but I am not done with my holidays. I looked at the whole story and the money wasn’t that interesting, so I turned it down.

Who is your closest pal in the industry?

We don’t like to call out names. I’ve got friends as well as colleagues. Everybody is trying to create a working relationship and we don’t want to come out sounding like I’m closer to this person than that. So, I’m cool with most people.

    Are you in a relationship?

    I am in a relationship.

Is your man based in Nigeria?

    No, he’s not.

How does he cope with all your travels?

He also travels a lot, so it’s both ways.  Also, there’s Skype, so it’s easier to travel these days. Even if you are married and you have to travel a lot, keeping in touch is not difficult anymore. Sometimes, we meet in other countries.

Is he comfortable with your career choice?

Yes, he is. The thing about me is that I try to be honest about things. If he is not comfortable, he won’t be in the relationship because nobody is holding his legs and hands down! But there are always concerns. Trust me, if I wasn’t in the industry, I guess I would have been married a long time ago.

Is the industry holding you back from getting married?

It is not holding me back. But to some extent, it holds back some men. So, by holding the men back, it is holding me back. People watch our movies and they form their impression about you before they meet you.

Are you in anyway trying to break into the movie industry in the UK?

No. But in the U.S., I have opportunities to do that and I’m exploring them. In the UK, I haven’t even tried. I’ve just been with my family. I’m just moving from one person’s house to the other. There is something about me. I’m not trying to do 50 movies in a year. I don’t want to be on all the posters in the whole country. I want a private life. I want to just maintain consistency. That is what I want to do. I want to be able to do my business, have a family and still be able to maintain that consistency.

It sounds contradictory that you want a private life in a career that puts you in the public eye…

It is not. Doing movies is a career; it is my job. That is what I do; it is not who I am. I want to be able to have my family, my kids and I am looking forward to things like that. But my job stands.

How soon do you hope to get married?

I will be getting married when I get married. I am an adult and I’m in a relationship. I would love to be married, but it is not entirely up to me. That is why I say that. I don’t need to be wearing a wedding ring before having my baby. I can have my baby, if I want to. That is family, isn’t it?

    Is it, for you?

(Laughs) I don’t know. So, let’s leave that for now.

Talking about physical appearance, what attracts you in a guy?

I think when you look at a man, you should look at his eyes because they can tell you a lot. The eyes are the window to his heart. It could be fake, but when you look at the eyes, you will see a lot. I am not attracted to looks and things like that. You have to see before you talk to somebody. Sometimes, you see someone and you don’t need a minute to know what that person is like. When I’m with someone, there are things that tell me the person is kind. Is he someone who can tolerate me? Is he someone who believes that there is God, so he minds his actions? Those are the questions I ask myself. There is no big deal about all the other stuff.

You were known mostly for doing epic films. Is that still the case?

I don’t have a problem with that. I just love Africa; I just feel like we have a lot of stories that have not been told. Even if it has been told, I just feel like my voice must be heard. You won’t say because there are a million books in the world, so you won’t write another one. We should let our voices be heard. So,I don’t have a problem with it. The other part is because I don’t really like getting too sexy in movies. I try not to be too sexy in movies. I’ve been trying, but it is not easy. I don’t want to do crazy things. I don’t have a problem with doing it; but somehow, I have this discomfort with exposing too much.

Why wouldn’t you want to showcase your beauty in a movie?

I am pretty and that is okay. Of course, I do that in movies, but a scene can be created and told without telling too much. Not everything must be shown explicitly. Sometimes, when it is necessary in a story, I can do it. But sometimes, you look at a story and you realise that, without a particular scene, it still makes sense.

Have you ever been approached to act nude?

No! I don’t need to do it. I think nudity is not beautiful. Being completely naked is not a beautiful thing. It is lovely when you are passionate in a movie scene and the more you look, the more you want to see; yet, the less you actually get to see.

With your love for acting, why did you choose to do a science course?

(Laughs) I’m a bookworm. That’s what was happening to me. Back in school, I was so much into books; and at the same time, I loved the social life. I don’t know what would have happened, if I wasn’t a little bit social. I think I would have been a geek.

I thank God that I had a little social life. I had always loved Nigerian movies. I was born in Cameroun and even while there, I watched Nigerian movies a lot. It was the only thing I could do. That was like the message I had. That was the only way for me to know Nigeria. That is why I love the movies. They go so far. While in Cameroun, I watched all the movies. I knew all the actors and everything that was going on in the industry. So, when I came to Nigeria, it was the only platform that I really knew. Every other thing I used to hear about Nigeria was bad. The only thing that was sterling was the movie.

Will you be putting them to use at some point?

I still plan to have more. I will go back for more degrees. Maybe I’ll do a Master’s. At some point, I will put them to use. I am here with my family and we are having a lot of talks. They are expanding my ideas and talking to me about so many things. So, I’ve come to the conclusion from everything I’ve heard that I will.

  • Actress imprisoned for stealing ipad

An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced an actress, Nancy Ndukwe, 26, of Jikwoyi, Abuja, to two months imprisonment for stealing an Ipad, IPhone and Jewellery.

The Police Prosecutor, Cpl. Paul Anigbo, told the court that the matter was reported at the Lugbe Police Station by one Faith Njoku of Kapuwa Village, Lugbe, Abuja on Sept. 2.

Anigbo told the court that Ndukwe reported that her friend, Njoku visited her on the said date and stole her Ipad, IPhone and Jewellery, all valued at N190,000.

Anigbo listed the price of each of the items as reported by the complainant as Ipad, (N100,000), IPhone (N50,000) and Jewellery (N40,000).

He said that during police investigation, the items were found in the convict’s possession.

The prosecutor said  that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code.

The convict pleaded guilty to the charge but begged the court for mercy.

“I stole the items due to frustration. I have a one-year-old son to cater for. I am sorry and I promise not to do such again,” she said.

The Magistrate, Mr Celestine Odo, however, gave the convict two months imprisonment or an option of six thousand naira fine. (NAN)
