PDP, SDP, AD members join APC in Ondo

Several members of the opposition in Ikare-Akoko community of Ondo State at the weekend defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors were from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alliance for Democracy (AD) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The State APC Chairman Ade Adetimehin expressed delight at the massive turnout of defectors, led by a PDP chieftain, Olanrewaju Kazeem.

The chairman noted that with the high profile political figures from the three major opposition political parties into the APC, the political firmament in Akoko Northwest had collapsed into the party.

He said Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu could not attend the ceremony due to his engagement in Abuja.

Adetimehin advised the defectors to work for the party’s growth y, adding that they should not see themselves as joiners but as bona fide members of the party with equal rights.

APC has no pact with AD, says ex-commissioner

Former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Lateef Ibirogba has said there is no alliance between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the July election in the state.

Addressing party supporters at the a symposium to honour APC chieftain Olusegun Shodiya, titled APC For Shodiya On June 12 said some misguided elements from the opposition parties were spreading false information that APC and AD had a pack.

He urged APC loyalists and the electorate to disregard the information, stressing that APC never had pact with AD, but the people.

Ibirigba said the oppositions were out to mislead the electorate in order to gain support which they never merited.

He said: “The people that are parading themselves now are the breakaway of the AD, who are trying to revive the party in order to make their gains. They are the one now using our party the APC because they are aware that is the party people are going to vote for.

“They are aware that the APC is the only party that is genuinely interested in the progress of the people in Lagos and Nigeria. We have left the AD since 2006 and we are not going back to it.

“We have advanced from AD to Action Congress (AC), from there to Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and from there to a national party APC. We have no intention of backsliding, whatever information that was been given was concocted by anti progress elements, now parading themselves as AD.”

He said issues arising from the recently held council primaries have been are solved  by the party leadership, noting that the APC was fully ready to participate in the election.

“There is no way a woman will go into the labour room without spilling blood. Though there have complaints in certain programme undertaken by the party in the past, but we have managed whatever issues that were raise.

“I want to tell you that today there are no issues, we are all one. That is why you have this hall filled to capacity. The members know their representatives and we are happy that APC has a pact with the people.”

Lagos State House of Assembly member Hon. Bisi Yusuf urged the APC candidates to render service, adding that the electorate is now sophisticated.

He said Lagosians were hailing Governor Akinwunmi Ambode because he surpassed their expectation. He stressed that the benchmark created by the governor would put all other elected politicians in the state on their toes.

Shocker as Fayose reveals plan to dump PDP

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday hinted that he may quit the crisis-ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the 2018 governorship election.

Speaking during a meeting with the state Suppliers’ Association of Nigeria in Ikere-Ekiti, Fayose said  he would stop All Progressives Congress (APC) from taking over the state in 2018.

The governor told his audience he was studying the situation on which party he would move his political family.

Speaking on the defeat his party suffered last Saturday in Ondo State governorship poll, Fayose alleged that the electorate sold their votes.

“The scenario won’t repeat itself in Ekiti,” the governor boasted.

He said the victory of Rotimi Akeredolu did not confer legitimacy on the election or that the people voted rightly.

Fayose dumped the PDP ahead of the 2011 general election when he defected to  Labour Party (LP) to run for Ekiti Central senatorial seat. He was defeated by then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate Babafemi Ojudu.

Fayose returned to PDP in 2012 ahead of the 2014 governorship election in which he defeated Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Ekiti PDP is polarised; the exco loyal to Fayose is led by Gboyega Oguntuase, which belongs to Ahmed Makarfi faction.

The other exco loyal to Senator Buruji Kashamu belongs to Ali Modu Sheriff faction.

On his political future, Fayose said: “I don’t know the platform I will use for the 2018 election yet and at the appropriate time, I will tell you.

“We are still studying the situation. We have to play the game left, right and centre and whoever we are going to use and the platform, you will all be part of the process because politics is about the people.

“You saw how people sold their votes in Ondo State. I am confident that will not happen in Ekiti.  I am close to the people; you are the source of my strength.

“Even if it requires just 48 hours to any election, if I tell you where to go, you will surely follow me there.”

At another meeting with civil servants on Grade Levels 01-06, Fayose boasted that he would defeat the APC again in the 16 local governments, just as it happened on June 21, 2014.

He pledged to give priority to workers’ welfare, carrying them along on receipts from the Federation Account and bridging the communication gap with the workforce.

The governor added: “APC will be fooling itself if it thinks it will conquer Ekiti as it did Ondo. Ekiti is a peculiar place and I am the man on ground here.

“I want to assure my supporters and Nigerians that APC won’t win a local government here in 2018.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko and Eyitayo Jegede might have lost in Ondo State, but that does not mean the people voted rightly.  In 2015, people clamoured for change and what have we got now? Nigerians are becoming poorer than ever.

“Today, I am the lone voice in Southwest. I am now like the nation of Israel surrounded by enemies, but I shall defeat and triumph over them.”

  • Ondo decides: AD, APC trade words over voter inducement

Ondo decides: AD, APC trade words over voter inducement

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday traded words over alleged voter inducement.

AD Deputy Governorship candidate Ganny Dauda alleged that the APC distributed N1million to each polling unit in order to induce voters.

The running mate to Olusola Oke said he got information that APC agents in each unit got N500,000 with a promise to receive additional N500,000 to be shared to voters.

According to him, AD remains the party to beat despite any bid to buy votes.

Dauda praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring materials arrived on time.

He said: “This is 12noon and I can say that INEC distributed their materials early enough without hitches. People are coming out en mass to vote. People are really interested. Security has been efficient.

“But I will not hesitate to mention that there were threats from a particular party, that is the APC, that even when they lose an election, they will be declared the winner.

But former Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker and APC chief Victor Olabintan debunked the allegation.

He said not even President Muhammadu Buhari would sanction voter cash-for-vote

“They are the ones distributing money. APC does not distribute money. Where will the APC even get the money to distribute in the first instance?

“They said Buhari is behind us, but you know what Buhari can do. If you tell Buhari that you want to use money to win an election, he will ask EFCC to arrest you.

“We worked very hard and while we were on the field, we were concentrating on what we were going to do for the people.

“That’s what making us to coast home to victory. The people have spoken and spoken well.”

Ondo decides: AD accuses APC, PDP of manipulating polls

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Ondo State on Saturday alleged that both the All Peoples Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made good their threats to rig and win this election at all cost by embarking spate of intimidation, heavy monetization and outright manipulation of the ballot materials in the on-going election in the State.

The spokesperson of the Olusola Oke campaign Organization, Mr Bisi Kolawole in a statement disclosed that it was unfortunate that the APC, whose mantra of a complete change to a corruption-free Nigeria was now the very apostle of corruption, intimidation and outright manipulation of votes by heavily monetizing the voting processes in the election.

His words: “They have threatened to win this election at all cost and they have demonstrated the willingness to make their prediction come true. Our leaders were brutalised and hounded out of their homes in order to scare them and their supporters from the polling booths, they have brought in loads and loads of money to buy votes due to the pangs of hunger which they brought unto the people.

“Yet, they say they are fighting corruption. Again, the PDP too have been attacking us including our Candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, they are now buying votes in the full glare of all shamelessly to continue pillaging the State.

“From all over the State reports have it that cases of electoral manipulations are on-going, the PVC cards readers are not functioning properly and appears to have been compromised as they show figures different what are usually recorded in the accreditation exercise.

“In Kiribi town Ese Odo local government, the hometown of the APC Deputy governor candidate, Mr Agboola Ajayi, leaders and members of the AD were chased out of their home to prevent them from voting and scaring their supporters away. Indeed, a former caretaker Chairman of the local government and also native of Kiribo, Mr Akin Sowore narrowly escaped being arrested by armed men in police and army uniforms who stormed his home in the community at exactly 1;30 am and up till the end of the election, these security men were harassing the electorate and chasing them from the polling units

“In Supare, in Akoko South West local government which is the hometown of Mr Victor Olabintan, the Director General of the Rotimi Akeredolu Campaign Organisation, thugs loyal to him prevented members and supporters of the AD and other parties from voting in Unit 6, Ward 10, where he usually votes. They completely surrounded the polling booth ensuring that nobody voted for another party save APC aside chasing away all known AD members.

“In Akure, specifically Ward 5, Units 17 and 18 situated inside the Alagbaka Primary School, the Special Assistant to Governor Mimiko, Mrs Taye Afilaka, was initially arrested by the police and taken away for electoral infractions only to resurface about two hours later with money which they started sharing out in the full glare of security agents to anybody willing to vote for the PDP. In Unit 23, Ward 10, Akure South local government area, the State Chairman of the Okada riders association, one Ojo Obabi led his thugs in thump-printing  ballot papers with the aim of swapping them with those from the polling units later.”

The AD, while commending the resolve of the people to vote for it candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, urged them remain calm and not to be intimidated by those which it described as men of straws saying that in the end, the will of the people would prevail.

  • Ondo 2016 : AD, APC, PDP, others test strength tomorrow

Ondo 2016 : AD, APC, PDP, others test strength tomorrow

Who succeeds Dr. Olusegun Mimiko as the governor of Ondo State? This question would be laid to rest tomorrow when voters go to the poll. In this analysis, BUNMI OGUNMODEDE writes on the interests that will determine where the pendulum will swing.

The die is cast. Twenty-eight political parties will tomorrow slug it out in the 18 local government areas of Ondo State to elect Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s successor for the next four years.

Three of the 28 parties – Alliance for Democracy (AD), All Progressives Party (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – are leading contenders in the governorship election expected to be a tough contest.

Interestingly, the three senatorial districts in the Sunshine State have tickets of the leading parties and the three flag bearers are lawyers. The AD candidate, Olusola Oke is from the South; Rotimi Akedolu (SAN) is from the North and Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) hails from the Central.

Of the trio, only Jegede will be going to the poll tomorrow as a new comer. Oke and Akeredolu are returning candidates. They took shots at the Alagbaka Government House in 2012 as candidates of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and PDP respectively.

Observers say tomorrow’s election would not be an easy win for any of the candidates. According to them, the incumbency factor in the state would be of no consequence to the PDP candidate. The federal might will also be inconsequential to the APC flag bearer, who won in just three out of the 18 council areas in the last governorship election.

Unlike during the 2012 election when the PVCs were not deployed, tomorrow’s poll will be difficult to rig as only voters with the PVCs would be accredited electronically. So, parties who think they could manipulate the system through multiple balloting will be disappointed.

    Central Zone

In the Central Senatorial District, the base of incumbent Governor Mimiko and his anointed candidate, Jegede, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distributed 527, 199 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across the five local government areas in the zone. The councils are Akure North, Akure South, Idanre, Ifedore, Ondo East, Ondo West and Ile Oluji/Okeigbo.

The zone which is the largest in the state, has the highest vote and it is Jegede’s political base. Mimiko, who contested on the Labour Party platform in 2012 has his political future tied to tomorrow’s election. The former PDP candidate, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim accused the incumbent of fighting for a third time on the Jegede ticket. He accused Mimiko of plotting to succeed himself.

But, political analysts said that Mimiko threw his hat into the ring for Jegede to preserve the legacies of his two-term tenure in the state. However, some analysts said the battle would not be a walkover for Jegede since his political godfather is not the one on the ballot.

“He should be ready for battle even in the Central Senatorial Zone. To rely on votes from the district to win the election may be a miscalculation. He should make inroads to the North and South senatorial districts”, one of the analysts said.

Although, Jegede’s running mate, Ola Mafo hails from the South Senatorial District, voters in the district would  prefer Oke.

    South District

A total of 404, 330 PVCs have been distributed in the South Senatorial District, Oke’s political base. Being the most experienced of the three leading candidates, he is expected to consolidate his hold in the zone. His choice of Ganny Dauda, from Akoko in the North Senatorial District, as his running mate has been described as an added advantage. Besides, the fact that who is who in Akoko politics have not been supporting the APC candidate following the controversial shadow poll that produced him would help the AD flag bearer in the North. APC chieftains, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Olusegun Abraham and Mimiko’s former deputy, Alhaji Ali Olanusi were not supportive of Akeredolu’s ambition for the period the electioneering campaigns lasted.

It is believed that supporters of the chieftains would be more comfortable to cast their ballot for the AD in protest of the controversial primary and the attitude of the APC leadership to their grievances.

But, analyst have warned Oke against relying on experience but to take the battle to the PDP in its Central stronghold and take advantage of the discordant tunes in the camp of the APC in Akeredolu’s political base in the North.

    North District

The North Senatorial District is Akeredolu’s base. A total of 350, 050 PVCs have been distributed in the sisix local government areas in the zone. The councils are: Akoko North, Akoko Northeast, Akoko Southwest, Owo and Ose. In 2012 when Akeredolu contested on the ACN platform, he won only in Owo and Akoko Southwest, losing the other four local governments to Mimiko’s  Labour Party. The other local government he won was Odigbo. The Ose council which he lost in 2012 has been declared a battleground for the three leading parties. But Ose is believed to be leaning towards the AD. The votes of Owo, being the hometown of the APC flag bearer, will be won by Akeredolu. He would have to do extra work to retain the Akoko Southwest as he was said to have won the council during the last election because of the influence of Senator Boroffice.

    Expectations

Observers say that the turnout of voters in tomorrow’ election might be lower than in 2012 because only voters with PVCs would be allowed to participate.

They recalled that only Ondo West and Okitipupa in the Central and South senatorial zones recorded 50 per cent PVCs’ distribution. Going by the distribution, of the 181 registered voters in Akure South, only 74,337 have collected the PVCs; in Akure North, 21,447 out of the 47, 031 registered voters have collected PVCs; 55,174 collected in Ondo West’s 111,857 registered voters; 15, 087 collected PVC’s out of the 32, 074 registered voters in Ondo East and 41,487 out of the 79,466 registered voters in Okitipupa have collected the PVCs.

  • AD calls for free poll

    AD calls for free poll

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) has urged the federal government play by the rule of the game in the Ondo State election.

The Director-General of the Olusola Oke Governorship Campaign Organisation, Hon. Bola Ilori, said the state deserved a free exercise.

In a statement, Ilori said: “The organisation is aware of undemocratic and diversionary tactics employed by the Aso Rock sparrows and Presidential cabal in the Southwest led by former Governor of Ekiti state, Kayode Fayemi and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun to destabilize the existing peace and communal brotherhood in Ondo State by the repeated, persistent orders they have issued to the State Security Services (SSS),  police and intelligence agencies to arrest notable leaders and frontliners of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Ondo state including but not limited to the director general of the Olusola Oke gubernatorial campaign organization.

He added: “The sad experience of the aftermath of 1983 governorship election in the then Ondo state brings to fore the divisive and violent tendencies been orchestrated by APC, we however issue a passionate appeal to all Nigerians to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to give free and fair playing ground to the citizens and residents of Ondo state to elect their governor and desist from intentions and motives capable of re-echoing the ugly phrase, “Wild wild West”

He added: “The problems bedevilling the current administration spring from insurgency to terrorism, restiveness and militancy, kidnapping, infrastructure deficit,  recession, poor educational standards and the baggage of unfulfilled electoral promises which is enough task worth the attention, need government commitment and concentration.”

  • Oke receives AD flag, assures of development

Oke receives AD flag, assures of development

The legal tussle threatening to undermine Alliance for Democracy (AD’s) victory in the November 26 governorship election was laid to rest yesterday with the presentation of the party’s flag to the governorship candidate, Olusola Oke and his running mate, Ganny Dauda.

Supporters trooped into the Democracy Park, Oja-Oba, Akure, as early as 9am, defying the scorching sun. They danced to the songs of Fuji musician Saheed Osupa.

At the occasion were AD leaders, including National Leader Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa; National Chairman Chief Joseph Avazi and National Legal Adviser Kehinde Aworele, who was in court to challenge Oke’s emergence.

Aworele said: “There was a court action challenging Olusola Oke’s emergence but his victory is sure. We don’t want some people to go to court after his victory to challenge him.

“This was why I was in court. And the fact that I am here addressing this crowd today shows that there is no more crisis in the party, no cracks within the party, we are one indivisible party.

“I can assure you that Olusola Oke will be the next governor. Oke means mountain in Yoruba. Like his name he is on top, Ondo State will be on top, Yorubaland is on top.

“No matter how tall an Iroko tree may be, it cannot be taller than the mountain, Olusola Oke is on top and he will win.”

Akinfenwa said: “For 13 years, we have been in the wilderness, now it has pleased God to give us a leader capable of putting Ondo back on tracks.

“If you look at the PDP, it is full of crises. People deceiving people; members are at each other’s throats. The APC too is not faring any better; it is an amalgam of strange bed fellows who cannot deliver on their promises.”

Avazi assured that the AD was poised to form the next government given the spontaneous show of love for a party that merely came into reckoning two months ago.

According to him, a new dawn is breaking in Ondo State and AD is set to bring back the lost glory of the sunshine state. We have ruled this state before, this is our second coming and we shall not disappoint you.

In his acceptance speech, Oke assured that under his watch, Ondo would be better and the people would thrive.

He said: “Some people have been out on campaigns of calumny against me that I will abandon most of the projects I meet on ground. This is not true.

“Today, Ondo State is undergoing a difficult situation, all our industries are dead and there is poverty in the land.

“The priority of my government shall be the good of the people. I greet our mothers, we shall ensure we give you life abundance. We shall give you money to trade. Our workers shall receive their salaries and other entitlements as at when due.

“Our youths shall be employed as we shall revive our dead industries and make them functional again.”

  • ‘AD’ll develop riverine communities’

    ‘AD’ll develop riverine communities’

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Olusola Oke, has promised that his administration would ensure rapid development of riverine communities, if elected.

He promised to make the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) more alive to its responsibility of redressing the neglect, suffering and impoverishment associated with the oil-rich riverine areas.

Oke spoke in Agbadagba Obon and Arogobo in Ese Odo Local Government Area yesterday.

He regretted that the neglect of the area and its attendant hardship had left the people wallowing in poverty.

The AD candidate said he will reposition the State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

The people asked for a link bridge between Agadagba and Arogbo; connection of riverine communities to the National Grid and dredging of waterways for easy transportation.

Oke assured the people that his government would take up the requests one after the other.

He said: “We should not allow retardation. We should not allow the wheels of progress roll backwards, hence the need to vote for the AD to address all the wrong, neglect and injustice.

“Since former Governor Olusegun Agagu left office in 2009, what this area has seen is total neglect.

“Nothing has been added to the roads, water jetty and health facilities. Everything stopped where Agagu left it.

“Today, the roads are even more deplorable and need attention. AD will give you the much-desired attention,” Oke said.
