Atiku’s resignation shocking but we remain strong – Adamawa PDP

The Adamawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the resignation of its 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as shocking but not destabilizing.

Speaking on the development, the state party chairman, Barrister Ahmed Shehu, acknowledged Atiku’s political stature but emphasized that the PDP remains a formidable political force that transcends the influence of any individual.

“The former Vice President is undoubtedly a great asset, but our party has a strong nationwide structure. We remain a big, winning force,” Shehu said.

He also debunked rumours that the PDP structure in Atiku’s Jada Ward 1 had collapsed into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), assuring that the local chapter remains intact and loyal to the party.

“The PDP in Jada remains as it has long been, to the best of our knowledge,” Shehu said, adding that if the leaders and members of the PDP in that ward had gone out of the party with Atiku, they would have informed the party leadership at the state headquarters in Yola.

Atiku’s resignation from the PDP became known to the public Wednesday afternoon when the letter to that effect got out via the social media.

Adamawa PDP calls for swift legal action on Edo governorship election

The Adamawa State Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the official result of the just concluded governorship election as daylight robbery.

The party which called a press briefing to announce its position, urged the PDP  family to be quick in seeking a legal redress.

The Adamawa State Chairman of the PDP, Barrister Ahmed Shehu, along with other state party executives, addressed a briefing at the party’s state secretariat in Yola.

During the briefing, he stated that the state chapter fully supports the stance of the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and the PDP governors, asserting that the Edo State election was heavily compromised.

The party chairman said the state chapter stands by the results presented by the chairman of the Edo PDP National Campaign Council, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri  which indicated that the Edo PDP candidate, Dr Asue Ighodalo got the highest votes.

“We abhor the desperation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which employed all lethal means, including violent manipulation to subvert the wishes of the generality of Edo people,” Ahmed Shehu said.

He added that the “daylight political  robbery by the APC” is a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and may in particular worsen growing political apathy.

“We wish to state that we are solidly behind our national party leadership taking any legal measure to ensure that the stolen mandate in Edo State is retrieved,” he said.

On the fate of the PDP national chairman, the Adamawa PDP expressed the opinion that Umar Damagum should be allowed to serve out the tenure of the chairman that he took over from.

  • Adamawa PDP still unsettled despite presidential visit

THE political squabbling in the Adamawa State wing of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP is yet to settle despite the visit of the president and leader of the party, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to the state since the alleged imposition of candidates at all levels.

Investigation further revealed that Adamawa State PDP is yet to come to terms as one united block after the lifting of the suspension placed on sons of the state like the former National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Chief Joel Hamanjoda Madaki, and the former state secretary, Barrister A. T Shehu.

The grouse this time around is the Christian factor in the state PDP as some agitators are demanding the replacement of the gubernatorial candidate with that of a seasoned politician and legal luminary in the person of Barrister Jerry Kumdisi.

The position of these people is that after the Vice Admiral Murtala Nyako tenure of seven years, the Christians should naturally lead the state just like they waited in the wings until the completion of the term of a fellow Fulani man Nyako who should not be succeeded by another Fulani man, Nuhu Ribadu.

Be that as it may, their argument may be tenable but what remains to be known is the unyielding posture of the presidency to disregard the large Christian community in Adamawa State and that of the minorities who constitute a gigantic voting percentage of the state going by the 2011 general elections as a case study.

The chances of the PDP in Adamawa State still remained bleached as we count down to the general elections. This is manifested by the way bigwigs of the party have been bolting out to other parties to form a formidable opposition against PDP in Adamawa.

  • Tension over ‘plot’ to alter Adamawa PDP delegates’ list

There was tension yesterday over a “plot” to alter the list of 678 delegates for the Adamawa State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary.

Some forces in the Presidency were said to be behind the move, which drew protest from the state chapter of the party.

Adamawa PDP is insisting on a free and fair primary to prevent protest votes that may arise, if the process was manipulated.

Following the zoning of the governorship slot to Adamawa Central, the front runners in the race for the PDP’s ticket are former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Nuhu Ribadu; former governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Marcus Gundiri; former Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Ahmed Modibbo Mohammed; and a former member of the House of Representatives, Auwalu Tukur, who is the son of former PDP National Chairman Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

Others are Senator Abubakar Girei, Gen. Aliyu Kama and Governor Bala Ngilari, who is from the Northern Senatorial District.

All the aspirants, PDP leaders and stakeholders are insisting on a free and fair primary.

A committee, led by Senator Bala Adamu, was inaugurated by the PDP’s national secretariat to conduct ward congresses last Saturday.

But due to the security challenges in the state, the committee met with the aspirants and it was agreed that the list of delegates used for the governorship primary on September 6 be retained.

It was gathered that the Adamu panel later reviewed and harmonised the list with the aspirants and PDP stakeholders.

But when the panel was about to submit its report at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja yesterday, the Congress Appeal Committee stopped it from doing so because of what was termed “likely amendments to the list of delegates”.

The stoppage was attributed to an “order from above” by some sources in the Presidency.

A source said: “There is a fresh plot to scuttle the governorship primary in Adamawa through the alteration of the list of delegates. While the Adamu panel was about to submit its report, the Appeal Committee phoned from Yola, halting the exercise because of the need to make some amendments to the list of delegates.

“The directive from the Appeal Committee was strange because there was no petition before it to have warranted the stoppage of the report. We learnt some forces in the Presidency, led by an influential official from the Northeast, were not pleased with the list and vowed to alter it.

“They believe the delegates may not favour an anointed aspirant. Yet, the same list of delegates was used for the election of the party’s former governorship candidate, House of Assembly Speaker Umaru Fintiri. We are worried that any alteration might lead to a fresh crisis in Adamawa PDP.”

Another source said: “President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Working Committee should stop this plot to impose delegates on Adamawa PDP outside the list agreed upon by the aspirants, leaders and PDP members in the state. The only way the PDP can retain its control of Adamawa State is if its governorship candidate emerges through a transparent process.”
