    Oshiomhole vs. Air Peace

The airline should work more on its services

A viral video of a Senator Adams Oshiomhole exchanging words with some members of the staff of Air Peace at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, on June 11 has attracted many reactions from Nigerians. Oshiomhole is a former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), former governor of Edo State and former Chairman of the All progressives Congress (APC). He represents Edo North Senatorial District in the Senate.

Air peace, on the other hand, is a prime Nigerian airline. It is the largest airline not just in Nigeria but in the West African sub-region. It recently got the nod to fly passengers into London Gatwick Airport. It only recently too got the approval to fly into London Heathrow. The airline had on several occasions intervened to airlift Nigerians out of some countries, either due to conflicts, and during the COVID-19 lockdown.

This little background is necessary because the public show of shame at the airport appears to us as a bigger indication of a systemic dysfunction. The senator, according to reports, was denied boarding a scheduled flight because he allegedly arrived late to the airport. He created a scene by mounting the conveyor belt, thereby disrupting activities at the airport. He accused the airline of extortionist tendencies and the airline claimed he was lying and that he had arrived late for boarding and possibly wanted the rule to be bent for him.

Could it be that the senator possibly tried to carry over his ‘labour days’ agitations to the airport? From reports, it was the airline’s overreach. On the surface, he seemed to have forgotten that he has risen above that and is now a national figure who in biblical terms is like a ‘candle on the mountain’ and must be seen to exercise the greatest amount of restraint and dignified public decorum. But airliners adrift in its duties.

Air Peace airline, on the other hand, despite whatever laudable things it had done for the country, is often caught in the wrong side of good service delivery. There have been complaints of tacky services and faulty communication channels. Most air passengers often complain about the attitude of some of their ground personnel, especially when there are cases of delayed or cancelled flights. These agitations are often wrongly handled. So, the Oshiomhole response was not an isolated one, it is just that this time, it involved a public figure.

The incident exposes the systemic dysfunction that impacts on everyone. Here is a senator whose main duty is lawmaking. He did not take the laws into his hands to disrupt public service at the airport. It points at the interpretation most public officers give to their use of power. He registered his displeasure with what he interpreted as injustice.

His action at the airport can be overdone by many public servants. Many of them seem to suffer ‘superiority complex’. We see that on the roads where most public officers scare others away with sirens and sometimes physical abuses by their aides. Many of them break traffic laws and are often never arrested. Some public officers’ convoys have killed some road users without consequences.

As for Air Peace, we assume that they might be inadvertently taking liberties with their near monopoly of the sector. The senator might have been right in this instance but other Nigerians had sour experiences. Many of the airline’s ground staff are often described as very rude and uncaring.

Aviation is the hallmark of modern hospitality industry and the airline must put more efforts at training their workers, and rewarding or punishing them as appropriate. Good and hospitable services should not be negotiable.

The aviation industry is one with strict global standards below which no airline should operate. Air Peace must, beyond denying Oshiomhole’s allegations, put its house in order.

We believe that this incident points to a system that needs urgent re-appraisal. Why is there a trust deficit in systemic justice delivery? Why do people often take laws into their hands? Senator Oshiomhole did not want to get preferential treatment with the airline. If they say he was late, why did they offer him a seat? He insisted it was wrong to do offer him that as it was a scandal. He has already checked in online.

Air Peace has no excuse for tacky or confrontational customer services.

We hope that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) would wade into this issue and make public its findings so that the truth can be established for the record, and as a deterrent to other passengers.

Oshiomhole mourns as Nigeria’s oldest Catholic priest dies at 104

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and representative of Edo North Senatorial District, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria, who passed away at the age of 104.

The centenarian priest, from Igiode near Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, died peacefully at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday.

His death was announced by His Lordship Gabriel Dunia, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi.

Bishop Dunia had been anticipating Monsignor Oleghe’s next birthday, which would have been on February 6, 2024, and disclosed that the late priest’s funeral would take place on November 27, 2024, following a burial at the Catholic Cemetery in Ivhianokpodi, near Agenebode.

Having retired three years ago, Monsignor Oleghe spent his final years in his hometown of Igiode, after serving as a priest at the local Catholic Church in Fugar, Etsako Central LGA of Edo state.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole described the late Monsignor Oleghe as a symbol of priestly humility and a staunch advocate of Christian values, noting that his life was a powerful example of faith, devotion, and humility.

In a condolence message to Bishop Dunia, Oshiomhole said: “It is with a very heavy heart that I write to commiserate with you, the Catholic Church, and indeed the Nigerian Christian family on the death of Rt. Rev. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe. His transition is a profound loss, not just to our diocese, but to the nation at large.

“The late priest was remarkably frank, pious, and humane. I praise him for his unwavering commitment to guiding believers and fostering societal betterment, through moral teachings.

“Even as we mourn him, we are comforted by the assurance that his impactful life resonated with God, who blessed him with longevity, before calling him to eternal rest.”

The Edo North Senator also prayed for divine strength for the members of Catholic community in Auchi and beyond, urging them to draw solace from Monsignor Oleghe’s exemplary legacy of service and faith.

  • Obaseki, Oshiomhole celebrate with Iyase of Benin at 90

THE Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Saturday joined other dignitaries to celebrate with the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe, on his 90th birthday anniversary.

At the thanksgiving service in honour of the Iyase at Our Saviour Church, Diocese of Benin Anglican Communion, the Bishop of the Church, Friday Imaekhai, called on Oshiomhole to resolve political differences with his successor, Governor Obaseki even as he urged the former governor to forgive his successor for the state to move forward.

The Bishop then called out Obaseki, Oshiomhole, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Frank Okiye, and the Secretary to Edo State Governor, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, to the altar and prayed for them.

Waxing philosophical, the clergy said it was the ground that suffered when two elephants engaged in a fight.

At last, Oshiomhole, Obaseki, Ogie and Okiye embraced and shook hands in compliance with the priest’s directive.

However, at the reception service, Oshiomhole refused to recognise Okiye as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly while observing protocols.

Addressing journalists after the thanksgiving Governor Obaseki described the Iyase as an icon of the Benin culture, history and people.

He thanked God for his life, noting “We celebrate him at 90; we wish him good health and pray for God Almighty to continue to protect him and take care of him.”

On his part, Oshiomhole described Chief Igbe as a man of immense discipline and patience, adding, “He is a man of clean heart and truly believes in the development of his community and that explains why he is the Iyase of Benin Kingdom.”

“Everybody prays to reach age 90. From the bottom of my heart, I celebrate with him and his family. I am happy that he has lived long enough to see the investment of his children,” the All Progressives Congress National Chairman said.

Other dignitaries at the thanksgiving service included the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion; former Inspector General of Police, Solomom Arase, former Edo State Deputy Governor, Chief Mike Ogiadomeh; Iyalode of Lagos, Chief Mrs. Bintu-Fatima Tinubu, among others.

Chief Igbe obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1947 and graduated with a Cambridge Grade Two School Certificate in 1952.

In 1956, he was recruited into the first Cadet Sub-Inspector Course of the Nigeria Police Force and served 22 years in the service as a Police officer. He served as Commissioner in Ondo and Anambra states. Chief Igbe became the 18th Iyase of Benin Kingdom in 1997.

  • Oshiomhole: I have nothing to gain by denying Obaseki second term

THE National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, has dismissed as untrue allegations that he is against a second term for his successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State.

He said he stands to gain nothing by stopping the governor from returning to office.

Oshiomhole told Channels Television that his differences with Obaseki are not about monetary gains from his administration, or about him blocking the governor’s second term bid.

He added that at a meeting both politicians held with four governors, Obaseki confirmed that the APC chairman nominated only one out of over 20 commissioners into his cabinet.

The former governor noted that Obaseki later removed the commissioner he nominated along with seven others but he didn’t take any offence because he was out of government.

He, however, said the contention was all about issues relating to governance and carrying political players and leaders in the party along.

Oshiomhole also denied not wanting to support Governor Obaseki to run for a second term, saying he has nothing to gain in doing so.

  • Buhari has done well, says Oshiomhole

NATIONAL Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday gave President Muhammadu Buhari  a pass  mark in the  first 100 days of his second term.

”President Buhari can beat his chest to say I have started well; I have started fast. You cannot call him Baba Go Slow now. This time, he is Baba Fast,” Oshiomhole said last night in Abuja.

He said: “Everything is about comparison. In 2015, after 100 days, we did not have a federal cabinet. The President had not appointed ministers.

“From my interaction with a number of ministers,  the budget for 2020 is already being prepared.

“Ministers have been assigned to their various ministries. They have already started the process of taking over and trying to understand the challenges.

“Government is already effectively on ground. That alone shows a remarkable departure, if you compare what the President has done in 2019 to what he did in 2015.

“The President has been engaging various groups. Recently, he talked to the Nigeria Society of Engineers and other professional groups, reminding all of us that we have our roles to play in the Nigeria project.

“As a party, we have access to the President. We see him any time we want to see him and share with him whatever we want to do. You notice that this time, the President organized a retreat for ministers immediately they were appointed. That retreat was not about entertainment; it was to discuss about Nigeria and the administration’s policy choices.

“Now, the government challenge is: where do we cut costs, so that we can find resources we need to sustain investment in infrastructure?”

  • APC urges Fed Govt to nationalise South African firms

THE National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) urged the Federal Government to nationalise all South African companies in the country.

APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, who briefed reporters after the meeting of the NWC, said the South African government was nonchalant.

He said: “We have discussed the attacks on foreigners in South Africa, particularly blacks who are predominantly Nigerians. Having listened to all the explanations from the authority in South Africa, we have come to the conclusion that these people are not being accused of being illegal immigrants nor are they involved in any illegal activities.

“Those who have business permits to set up businesses, whatever business theyare involved in, they are operating within the letters of the law. Over the last one year, virtually every week, Nigerians are being wasted in one part of south Africa or the other.

“We know that the government has had conversation with the South African authority, drawing their attention to these and other abuses that Nigerians have been subjected to. But the escalation of the attack on foreigners which include Nigerians has reached a level that is no longer tolerable.

“At one time, people wonder whether these attacks have the backing of the south African government. What has been clear over the period is that the South African authority has not demonstrated sufficient commitment to bring these attacks to an end.

“Inspite of the fact that the lives of many people have been wasted, not one South African is known to have been convicted ad sentence to prison for their role on the attack on foreigners, killing them and looting their businesses.

“We have been able to watch some of the comments on the recent attack, particularly the one that was made by a deputy Minister of Police Affair that not only endorse the killing and looting of foreign businesses, but refer to the activities of those foreigners who are into legitimate businesses as tantamount to economic sabotage.”

He added:  “As we speak, while South African government is envious of the small businesses which Nigerians are involved in south Africa, South African companies are making billions of dollars from Nigeria and repatriating same out of Nigeria.

“For example, MTN is making huge profit, including sometimes breaching our national laws. South Africans cannot be envious of small businesses over there while their business giants are smiling to their foreign banks where they keep profit that the repatriate from Nigeria.

“We are aware that not too long ago, MTN was enlisted in the stock exchange and some Nigerians have bought shares from MTN. I think that in moments like this and too send strong message to the south African authority and their people, it is worth it for the Nigerian government to take over the remaining shares of MTN that are owned by south African so that MTN become fully Nigerian own.

“While government think of how to deal with this, I think that in our individual capacities, this is the moment to show our commitment to our fellow citizens and show sympathy to those who have lost loved ones by boycotting South African goods and services, beginning with Nigerians refusing to use MTN services.

“Happily, we have indigenous networks like Glo, ntel and 9 mobile. But if Nigerians decides, at least for the next 30 days as a first step, to stop using MTN, they would have sent a clear message and pay befitting tribute to the life of those whose live have been wasted in South Africa. This will be more elegant rather than our people going to the streets and throwing stones against fellow Nigerians and a life being lost in the process.

“This should also give us opportunity to reflect n why we should continue to allow DSTV to continue to repatriate millions of dollars to South Africa every year arising from their activities in Nigeria.”

The Ooni of Ife Adeyeye Ogunwusi and the Catholic Bishop of Minna Diocese, Most Reverend Martin Uzuokwu, on Thursday urged South Africans to stop the attacking foreigners, especially Nigerians, as the act could endanger peace on the continent.

Oba Ogunwusi described the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa on Nigerians living there and their properties as a shameful act that is unacceptable to the black race in Africa and in the Diaspora.

The traditional ruler also advised Nigerians alleged to have embarked on reprisal attacks on South African companies in Nigeria to stop it and allow peace to reign.

The monarch spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“This attack is a shame on the black people, we all need to come together and see ourselves as one. The more we propagate our cultural ties across the continent, the more we will see and recognise that we belong to one big family,” he said.

The traditional ruler said  that African countries only had artificial boundaries that had given a geographical expression of names to countries  inhabited by  of a group of people but all of us are of the same lineage.

“We must erase the ongoing xenophobic killings in Africa, we only have artificial boundaries. We are all the same whether Nigeria or South Africa.

“Also, we must not forget so soon that Nigeria helped South Africa to fight the Apartheid regime that led her to becoming a democratic country in 1994.

“That development led to the late Nelson Mandela emerging as the first democratically elected president of South Africa,” he told NAN.

He said that it was unfortunate that  the people involved in the xenophobic attacks either in South Africa or in Nigeria  were only being misled by those who never knew the history of Africa and had no stake to lose.

“What is the percentage of those people’s business in the economy of South Africa? It’s very minute.

Uzuokwu, who spoke with NAN in Minna also urged the South Africans to show forgiveness, love and peace for the overall growth on the continent.

“We are all from the same continent, we need to love one another and also learn how to forgive for peace, progress and political stability in our continent.

” We cannot get to anywhere without forgiveness. If you do not forgive others, the Lord will not forgive you.

“Many prayers offered by some people today were not answered because they did not follow what the Lord says,” Uzuokwu said.

The Cleric condemned the senseless killings of innocent souls going on in some parts of South Africa.

He said: “Africa is a blessed continent, God blessed us with human and many mineral resources but what needs to be done is to love one another to enable us to tap the abundant resources at our disposal.”

He also called on the African Union (AU) to act against the inhuman treatment by South African xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other nationals.

  • Buhari hails Chief Edebiri at 90

A BENIN high chief, David Edebiri, the Esogban of Benin Kingdom on Saturday marked his 90th birthday, which according to him was the first time he was marking his birthday.

The event was attended by National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, Speaker Francis Okiye amongst others.

President Muhammadu Buhari in his goodwill message to the Esogban by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, joined members of Edebiri family, friends and well-wishes in celebrating an important and respected son of Bini Kingdom’s rich culture and heritage.

The President affirmed that many generations of Nigerians have a deep appreciation of Chief Edebiri’s devotion to Nigeria’s unity and prosperity over the years, beginning from his days of activism in the pre-independence period till now that he conscientiously aligns with the vision of this administration to take Nigeria to the Next Level.

According to Shehu, “President Buhari values the goodwill and fatherly advice of the nonagenarian to this government even as he prays almighty God to grant the Esogban of Benin longer life in health and happiness.”

Tinubu stated that they know what Chief Edebiri means to them as a political family, adding that one does not retire from politics because it is in the blood and DNA.

He observed, “Few minutes ago, we were told you are no longer in politics. I said no it is impossible. Politics must be in the blood. It is in the DNA. Chief Edebiri is still the leader of many of us.

“We thank God for your meritorious life and service to humanity. You are a man who is honest and dependable. You have nothing to do with deceit, lies and misadventure. When you say go ahead and we look back, you are always there. You are a leader with integrity and you have carried yourself with honour.”

Tinubu said Oshiomhole brought transformation to the state.

Oshiomhole in his speech praised Edebiri for adopting him as a son and supporting his emergence as governor.

The former Edo Governor said he would use any available opportunity to empower people from Benin Kingdom.

He recalled how Chief Edebiri helped solved problems within the APC.

Also, Yakassai said Chief Edebiri was among the few statesmen alive who fought for Nigeria’s independence.

He said the next struggle after gaining political independence is to get economic independence. Yakassai said Nigeria has the largest market in Africa and the struggle is to make the market benefit Nigerians.

He said they would continue to fight for the unity of the country, “We should struggle to make sure the market serve the interests only of our people. We will continue until victory is achieved.”

In his response to the torrents of tributes, Chief Edebiri said it was the first time he was celebrating birthday since he was born.

He said Oshiomhole did not disappoint him as a governor.

Chief Edebiri released 90 pigeons to mark the birthday.

  • Buhari summons APC NWC meeting

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has invited the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for a meeting today.

Likely in the agenda is a review of the outcome of the 2019 polls and how to make amends where necessary to put the party in a better shape.

It was also learnt that the session will consider the President’s “Next Level” agenda and how to ensure the buy-in of all APC elected and political office holders at the federal, state and local government levels.

Besides, the forthcoming Bayelsa and Kogi governorship elections may be part of the talks.

The President initiated the session to foster a new “consultative channel” between him and the party, The Nation learnt.

The meeting between Buhari and APC leaders will hold at the Presidential Villa by noon.

Ahead of the meeting, the NWC members met for hours yesterday to prepare their position on matters which may come up.

Sources said tension-related issues in the party may be put on the front burner to avoid cracks in APC and strengthen the party.

In the last few weeks, there has been a crisis of confidence between Oshiomhole and the Deputy National Chairman (North), Sen. Lawal Shuaibu, who was recommended for expulsion.

National Vice Chairman (North-West) Inuwa Abdulkadir was suspended by the Magajin Garin Ward.

The two national officers of the party have stayed away from the National Secretariat.

A former National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has been leading calls for Oshiomhole’s resignation.

Also, the handling of the party’s primaries in some states has created some misgivings.

APC has been unable to appoint a National Secretary since the election of the former holder, Mai Mala Buni, as governor of Yobe State.

A source, who confided in our correspondent, said:  ”The meeting will review the outcome of the elections. It is going to be a stock-taking session. We will look at our areas of strength and weaknesses to chart the way forward.

“And it is not yet over because we have elections coming up in November in Bayelsa and Kogi states. This is a timely invitation by the President.

“All issues in the party will be considered with the President, especially why certain things happened and the decisions taken. Since Oshiomhole came on board, he has placed premium on discipline and party supremacy.

“Some decisions of the APC leadership have not gone well with a few leaders but the President will have firsthand knowledge and we will all discuss some of these issues.”

Asked if the cases of Shuaibu and Abdulkadir might come up, the source added: “Issues in the party will be discussed. The most important thing is to keep the party stronger at all levels.”

The source said the “Next Level agenda” is a major item for consideration.

The source added: “A key point of the session  is the Next Level agenda of the President. We want  to ensure that our elected and appointed political office holders align with the progressive objective of the party.

“The way governance is being run at the state and local government levels, there is no clear distinction between APC states and those of the opposition, especially PDP states.

“APC is pro-masses. We want our policies and programmes at Federal , state and local government levels to be different and unique. So, all our elected and appointed political office holders must implement the agenda of the President.

“If you cast your mind back to the Second Republic, the progressives in UPN, GNPP and PRP were outstanding  in performance than those in the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN). This is our target.”

Another source gave insights into how the meeting was conceived by the President and the party.

The source said:  ”The need for rapprochement between the party and the President has been on the cards even before the last elections. We had agreed that the President and the party should be meeting periodically.

“It is part of what we proposed as a tradition so that the President and the party will be on the same page in terms of policy, dialogue and other matters.

“Unfortunately, the campaign and the challenges of elections did not allow us to go ahead with the idea. Now that our government has been re-elected into power, we feel the time is ripe to foster it.

“In deference to APC, the President wanted to come to the National Secretariat but he later changed his mind because of security logistics which his movement may attract.”

  • Why my approach as APC chair is combative — Oshiomhole

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has told those accusing him of being too combative as the National Chairman of a governing party that he is not about to change.

He also said he did not join politics to be changed by the way things are done by politicians.

The former Edo State governor, who spoke at a reception organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the visiting Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Guy Ryder, said he was of the view that diplomacy would not address the challenges facing the country, adding that only an aggressive engagement can force those benefiting from the status quo to change in a way that will make the country better.

Oshiomhole said he believes that more labour leaders should join government so that together they can force a change in the way things are done in the country.

Oshiomhole said: “Whatever I am doing today, my style and choice of what I do and what I abstain from doing, I owe to Labour.

“If you read Nigerian media, there is this saying that as national chairman of a governing party, I am not supposed to be combative, and I said that I am even more convinced now about the need for combat.

“If this country is going to change and deliver to the poor, deliver decent jobs, we need not diplomacy but aggressive engagement to force those who are benefiting from the status quo to change and in such a way that will make the country to work for people who live on their wages.

“Some people said to me that I am too combative, and I said to them that I was not coming to copy their method but coming to impose my method; to change the system and not for the system to change me.

“I refuse to be changed by the system. My hope is that with more comrades coming in, we will work together to change the system for a better future.

“I am very proud of my background as a factory hand, as a factory organiser, as a general secretary of textile workers, President of NLC.

“And then some people say I cross, and I say I cross to where? I just continue with the struggle

“I can explain, because I move from conveying my grievances with placards and organising strikes with protest and pressure to trying my hands on the driver’s wheel.

“To try to do those things that I tried to communicate with placards, I now use executive pen to get it done.”
